Where to Eat in Madison, Wisconsin

"It’s heartening to know that a restaurant like Ahan, which shifted from a mobile kitchen to a takeout-centric pandemic pop-up of sorts, can not only survive but settle in, thrive — even expand. You’ll now find Ahan on Williamson Street, run by the dynamic duo of Jamie and Chuckie Brown-Soukaseume, chef and general manager respectively. From noodles and soups to dumplings and fried chicken, Jamie’s homey and deeply informed recipes have earned her numerous accolades, most recently Madison magazine’s Chef of the Year for 2024." - Kyle Nabilcy

The 14 Best Restaurants In Madison, Wisconsin

"Ahan does pan-Asian dishes made from locally sourced ingredients, which might mean your kung pao is loaded with asparagus and the coconut sticky rice gets topped with honeynut squash from a Madison-area farm. If we had to pick our perfect meal, it’d include the huge beet and tofu vegetable egg rolls and praram long song served with crispy tofu and a side of peanut sauce. Ahan is a great casual lunch and dinner move, and you should definitely stick around for the excellent dole whip and soft serve. " - sarah probst

I'm going to give this review from two perspectives: me and my spouse. We arrived with a couple of friends for dinner and there were tons of people waiting. We waited an hour and fifteen minutes for our table - exactly the time we were promised when we checked in with the host station. We got some impromptu reviews from folks leaving after their dinner; one person said it was worth the wait and another said it wasn't worth the wait. I will say I really appreciate the posters and signs showing Ahan is an ally of all people. The restaurant itself is a total vibe: cool art, cool lighting, and an overall modern kind of feel. The service was rad. Very attentive and helpful. From my perspective, the food was decent. Nothing that blew my mind but tasty. Pricey but it's Willy St so it's par for the course. I got the fried rice and it wasn't bad. I loved all the veggies in the fried rice but it wasn't the most flavorful. My spouse, on the other hand, was incredibly disappointed with the food. My spouse is Asian and loves a drunken noodle. My spouse also inhales food at a pace that would shock some. The drunken noodles were barely touched. The sauce was overwhelming both in flavor and in quantity. We took the leftover noodles home and my partner planned to water down the sauce and noodles and put it over rice. It was better but still way too strong. While I'm glad we tried out Ahan, we would not go back. It's a little much for us.

Arriveed 15 minutes early today before they opened and there was a small line at the door already. It was our first time here. Within 15 minutes of opening, the restaurant was full already. Gave me good hopes that the food was good. We order the pork dumplings and Khao Tod for appetizers. Kids love the dumplings that we had to order more. For entrees, we had pho tai, pho gai, mok pa - the steamed cod, drunken noodles and the fried rice. All were very delicious. The presentation was also very nice. Food was not disappointing at all. We had the strawberry ube ice cream and that was yummy as well. Service was good too, considering the amount of people in at the time. There were still people lining up to come in when we left an hour later.

Ahan on Willy Street has great food and drinks. You order at a counter and they'll bring the food and drinks to your table. They don't take reservations but I got there around 6pm on a Friday night and only waited about 15 minutes to get a table for 3. I got their beef pho which was pretty good. My friends got their curry soups which was also good.

The food here meets my expectations with flavors that cater well to Southeast Asian palates. My only complaints are that the Tom Yum and drunken noodles are a bit too sour. Additionally, their version of Thai Milk Tea doesn’t appeal to me as the sweetener tastes somewhat artificial.

Food was delicious. 9/10. My personal favorite dishes included green curry and praham long song. Everyone we talked to recommended the red noodles, so definitely try those as well! I got the foco roasted coconut juice as a drink which was nice but wouldn’t re-order. To be truthful, I only got it because it had boba. The sticky mango rice as dessert was DELICIOUSSSS and a fun cultural food to try. The cream cheese wontons were exquisite. Basic, but delicious. Almost everything here can be made vegetarian and gluten free which is great if someone has dietary restrictions. Overall would definitely recommend this place, especially with parents in town as it is a little pricey for the college student budget. The service was good except they do this thing where you have a table but must go to the front and order every time and then they bring your food out to you. I was not the biggest fan as someone constantly had to get up to go order food, a drink, etc. and it broke conversation. May just be a personal preference though. My final rating is an 8/10 for the restaurant.

Fantastic lunch! Ahan has been on my list for a while now, so glad we finally went. Food was outstanding, service was immediate and kind and came with excellent recommendations. Coworker and I shared lao egg rolls and pork dumplings, I had the chicken Ho Fun with crispy noodles (from server recommendation!), coworker had shrimp Kung Pao (he said it was the best he's ever had). Atmosphere also lovely. Will be back for sure.

An amazing South East Asian restaurant in Madison. The craft cocktails are off the charts and very different. Made me want to get on the next flight to Thailand. We had salad which had homemade sausage and bits of crispy rice, bang xeo, pork buns with egg in it. Not the regular red and green curries, more options and oh so yum!

This restaurant is the prime example of “tipping culture has gone too far.” They ask you to pay first at the bar, which is already an awkward place to order in between other guests eating. You are talking over other guests seated at the bar, which I find really unhygienic and intrusive if I were seated at the bar. The default tip on the machine starts at 20% but you cannot tell how good their service and food even will be. They then give you a number holder like a cafeteria. Trying to get the attention of a waiter for a simple task took a long time because I don’t even think there’s a designated waiter for a table. Food themselves were decent, but I am very disappointed in the service. At this rate, they might as well serve on a plastic tray and ask guests to return the dishes.
