New Zealand Food Is Making Its Way Onto the Map

"A chef-driven Auckland restaurant born from months of travel and relationships with fisherpeople, hunters, growers and makers; it showcases an immersive tasting menu rooted in native cuisine and Māori techniques, pairs dishes closely with terroir-driven wines, and has earned major local recognition while collaborating with nearby producers for finishing touches like handcrafted bonbons." - Ashley Day

The 38 Best Restaurants in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland, New Zealand) | Eater

"Housed in Commercial Bay, Ahi (te reo Māori for “fire”) celebrates the produce and flavors of Aotearoa as imagined by revered chef Ben Bayly. The kitchen utilizes a sprawling off-site garden to produce dishes such as miso-barbecued octopus with papaya gazpacho or hot-smoked Japanese quail with garden seeds and mousetrap cauliflower (a take on the homey dish of toast topped with cheese and Marmite). Outside the garden, local foraged and fished ingredients take shape as the seasons change, like the kina (urchin) kilpatrick with pikopiko (mother spleenwort) ferns. The snacks are some of the most delicious items on the menu, so be sure to stock up; no order is complete without the scampi (langoustine) corn dogs or wallaby tartare. — HE" - Hillary Eaton

I ate a lot of fine dining and Michelin stars around this world and this one is just decent. It is a 4 snacks and 4 courses concept and not cheap. Items are locally sourced and they are trying to be sustainable, etc. Of course my expectations were high. First the highlights: the beef main is very tender and cooked to perfection and sauce is a good accompany, it is zesty with nice acidity. Second, the 4th snack was really good. It packed a punch but its main is the balance of flavour is was quite lacking in the rest of the dishes except the dessert. The rest of food was okay. The sauce is often too buttery or lacking the refined balance you would expect on this kind of restaurant. Vibes were good however service can be improved. Waiters handed dishes over on left side, sometimes right side. Explanation of food is sometimes on my right side or in between me and my partner. Also it is a bit too close in our personal space and onto the food so respectfully it is best to keep a good distance. If they can improve on all these I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Getting to the restaurant was easy as there's a Wilson car park 5 mins walk away. Finding the place was quite easy too. Walking inside you're hit with a nice smoky aroma from the lamb on the grill. From there we were tended to by the most friendly and very knowledgeable staff. We got the New Zealand Food Story course and regret nothing. Amazing food with incredible flavours, all coming from New Zealand ingredients that left us seriously impressed. We got to sit by the kitchen and watch the chefs hard at work, meticulously building each dish to have the same level of perfection as the last. We left the establishment having eaten the perfect amount of food to be completely full, but not bloated. Couldn't give it a better rating honestly. Also the drinks were just as good as the meals lol

We dined at Ahi with high expectations. We appreciated the strong focus on sustainability and the evident care taken in sourcing ingredients. While I admired the technical execution of the dishes, none of them really stood out or had a memorable character. Portion sizes were quite small considering we ordered two entrées, two side dishes, four mains, and dessert, yet still left feeling underwhelmed. The cocktails lacked roundness and depth of flavour, which was disappointing given the setting. Service from the staff was good and attentive, and the atmosphere was fine overall. However, on a cold day it was surprising that there was no outdoor heating available, which affected comfort. Overall, a technically competent experience with admirable sustainability values, but it didn’t quite deliver on flavour, value, or warmth.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Ahi in Auckland, New Zealand, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The menu showcased the very best of farm-to-table dining, and every dish was a masterpiece. I enjoyed the salmon, oysters, wild deer, and finished with a blueberry dessert—each course was bursting with fresh, vibrant flavors and cooked to perfection. The quality and taste were simply outstanding. Presentation was equally impressive; every plate looked like a work of art, elevating the entire dining experience. The restaurant’s location adds to its charm, situated close to the harbor and offering views overlooking Queen Street. If you’re looking for a place that combines incredible food, beautiful presentation, and a prime location, Ahi is a must-visit. Five stars without hesitation!

A truly memorable meal at Ahi. Every dish was thoughtfully crafted with beautiful, confident flavours. The service was outstanding — detailed, passionate explanations for each course really showed how much pride the team takes in the food. The crayfish and steaks were absolute standouts: incredibly fresh, kissed by charcoal, and cooked to perfection. The oysters and scampi were pristine — sweet, briny, and as fresh as it gets. Refined, flavour-driven, and executed at a very high level. A must-visit for anyone who genuinely loves good food.

A truly amazing and unique dining experience that goes beyond the exquisite food and atmosphere. The service and food knowledge from the wait staff were impeccable. Every dish was packed with beautiful flavours that complemented each other perfectly. Portions were just right—leaving us full, satisfied, but never overwhelmed. The standout of the night was the Wheke Bluff Coast: grilled octopus with octopus XO, mandarin, celtuce, and chilli. A true winner.

I came to Ahi after seeing it being featured on many foodie pages as one of the top restaurants in Auckland. I could clearly see where the hype was coming from. What i liked about Ahi, - Beautiful spacious interiors overlooking the beautiful harbour which makes it an ideal place to be in & enjoy a drink during sunset. - Loved the open kitchen concept where you get to enjoy the art making of the talented chiefs there with the chargrill ovens n that magnificient smell. - I was greeted by a beautiful lady that escorted me to the table n that was the best service i got but following that the young gentleman that was taking care of my table was nothing less than an extremly rude young gentleman that hasnt learned any manners. It seems he wasnt so happy with me not ordering a main dish, i simple got 1 started & 1 small plate. I asked to try a wine but wasnt a fan of it so decided not to go for a glass. He then comes back to my table & throws the menu on my table then comes back in few minutes asking in a very arrogant way "do you want to eat something else"! I just hated how i was treated, it made me feel so bad & was a horrible way for me to end my day! Its so sad when such a beautiful place would hire such amateur employees, it seems made me feel i dont want to come back to this spot! I tried the Oysters which weren't my fav, i believe they were Waikato oysters. Tried the Octopus which was lovely but the plate was so small versus the price point. In general Ahi is a beautiful spot to enjoy a couple of drinks n nibbles with friends n enjoy lovely music but paying high price point.

Ahi offers a consummate, world-class culinary experience. It is distinguished not only by the fact that its dishes, singularly and without exception, are conceived and prepared with an unfailing emphasis on taste; but also by the care with which ingredients are chosen, sensitive to conservation and supplier relationships; the caliber of its service, characterized by personalized attention to detail and friendliness; and the team spirit that characterizes the staff. We highly recommend experiencing the tasting menu at the kitchen bar, which will bring you in close contact with the staff and enable you to observe the professionalism and personality that embodies the staff’s approach to preparation and cooking. In short, Ahi has our highest recommendation, not only among Auckland restaurants, but truly as occupying a place among the best culinary experiences we’ve had. Anywhere.
