The 17 Best Pizza Spots In Rome 2024

"Ai Marmi is where you’ll find the best spicy, salami-laden pizza alla diavola in Rome. This is the top choice here, and you’ll realize why once thin slices of spicy salami swimming in a pool of tomato and mozzarella drip hot, orange oil down your sleeve. Enjoy your pizza at one of their outdoor tables lined up along the most bustling street of Trastevere, and end your meal with their tiramisù drowning in cocoa powder." - annie replogle

The 20 Best Pizzerias in Rome

"Locals endearingly call Ai Marmi l’obitorio (“the morgue”) for its marble tables and walls, but the nearly century-old shop on Trastevere’s main drag remains an institution for wood-fired pizza tonda (you can just ignore the signage on the oven in 1960s typography declaring “pizza napoletana”). The flimsy, thin-crust pizzas are quintessential for the tonda style, generously overhanging their plates. Be sure to check out the lightbox above the bar that lists starters such as fagioli (beans), filetti di baccalà (battered cod filets), and supplì al telefono (rice croquettes promising a satisfying cheese pull)." - Katie Parla

"A Trastevere institution since 1933, Ai Marmi (the official name is Panattoni, but no one calls it that) is exactly what you’d expect in an Italian neighborhood pizzeria—zero frills, lots of character, and authentic, thin-crust Roman pizza. This is the kind of place to hit for a quintessential Roman vibe, thanks to the requisite lineup of city favorites like fritti , fried cod, fried zucchini flowers, and supplì— mozzarella-filled fried rice balls. The shop gets its nickname from the long marble slabs that top the family-style tables ( ai marmi means "marble" in Italian)."

For the price that we paid it’s a great option for Rome, the cheapest dinner we had in this trip and it didn’t disappoint. Ample seating space and quick service with decent pizza and cod. I would come here again. Mostly locals in that place too

Google
Three Italian friends brought me here, claiming it’s the best pizza in Roma. I must agree! The pizza crust is incredibly thin and flavorful, crispy around the edges with fantastic toppings such as squash blossoms and finely chopped mushrooms. The zucchini frittata was genius, so delicious that we ordered a second plate of it. The house wine was local Frascati white, and it was decent enough. The ricotta cheesecake was exceptionally delicious. The waitstaff was slammed, but they did a fine job considering the crowd. You might find yourself waiting a little longer than you’d like to order, but it’s all very much worth the wait, and once we ordered, it wasn’t long before our food arrived. I highly recommend this pizzeria.

Me and my husband really enjoyed this restaurant. We ate here twice. The service was really great and the waiters super friendly. Pizza, wine, aperol everything for a good quality and buget friendly prices

Google
Roman pizza is great! But the real star is the fried baccala… mamma mia😋🤤

Google
After several researches I found this on google and the reviews were great. Keeping in the mind we reached there catching bus H. We ordered Calzone and Pizza Capricciosa 🤯🤯🤯 but omg Calzone was dammn salty, I couldnt eat more than 2 bites and Capricciosa was just average.Did not find the real taste of pizza. After observing few moments, the Pizzaiolo and the waiters seemed like they hated their job. May be its because of the routine job they do. Everyone has their opinions regarding the food choice and the service they received. ✌🏻✌🏻 Ciao

Google
Losing 1 star because of the pizza we got (salted beef) felt dry. I believe their other pizzas are great, but can’t say because we didn’t get to try those. The fried cod was great, definitely recommend that. Ask for mayonnaise if you’re having the fish because they didn’t provide one with the plate. There can be long lines after 7pm.

Google
We ran into this place by accident and it was fairly empty but by the time we left, this was crazy full with a long line to get in. The fried food was yum but I would skip the fried cod fish. I did see a lot of people ordering it so might be a local favorite. The pizzas are all amazing, we had a couple both were good. They do tend to burn the crust a little so be prepared to throw some of the crust away. Would happily go here for a quick pizza meal any day!

Google
The line of natives out front convinced me this place served authentic Roma pizza, they did not let me down. Fast paced cooks were loading the wood fired oven as quickly as they could pull them out, by my count 15 pizzas at a time. Part of the fun is simply watching the pizza staff

Yelp
what an amazing Pizza. I must say they really pump out the pies! Very casual Noisy but fun We had Fried Olives which were great also black olives too. Pizzas Mushroom and sausage was excellent also Margarita. This is the spot for Roman pizza Nice thin Crunchy crust. Remember they are 2 types of roman pizza this is my favorite the other is square and foccacia like

Yelp
My favorite pizza in Rome. I loved the food and the service. Long line, moves fast and worth the wait

Yelp
Most amazing pizza.- thin crisp crust. Perfectly done and cold beer ! Waiters are great too!

Yelp
Fun, lively crowd. The pizza took a while to to be ready. Almost an hour. I suggest you get some first courses while you wait. The pizza was good. The experience better. We were seated in close proximity to other tables, we met some very nice people from both Italy and Germany. A fun local experience.

Yelp
Amazing local pizza shop! The pizza is super thin and crispy. The sauce and cheese combination was great. I really enjoyed the mushroom and sausage pizza. We also got suppli and I think it was the best one all trip. It was rolled in bread crumbs so it was crispy rice on the outside with the perfect amount of mozzarella. The house wine was also delicious and so cheap. I used to come here when I studied abroad years ago because it was near our house. I brought my fiancé here on our most recent trip and it was his favorite pizza of the trip!

Yelp
This pizza place is definitely the most "poppin'" restaurant on the street. We made it just in time before the dinner rush, but even so, the restaurant was packed on the inside--table to table, elbow to elbow--and it is not a small space either. We were lucky to get a table without waiting, but ten minutes later there were people coming in and out of the doors and a long line outside. It was a cold night, but some people even opted to sit outside because the lines were so long!! They do do take-away so that is an option as well. My favorite part about this restaurant is the ability to see the pizza cooking in the open flame oven. I was fascinated by seeing the staff making the pizza right in front of our faces. Because it was such a, as I described it before, "poppin'" night, we waited quite a bit for our pizzas to come (around 30 minutes). To pass the time, we tried their fried squash blossom (comes with only one) and their suppli, which is like a fried rice ball filled with cheese. We didn't order the suppli at first, but after seeing about every table order one, we gave into the bandwagon and were glad we did. The squash blossom and suppli were filled with the perfect amount of cheese--enough for you to have to pull the hot melted cheese to keep it from stretching forever. They were both fried dishes, but I didn't feel the oil on it would make my face break out or anything ;p. I LOVED both of these appetizers and am drooling just thinking about it. When we finally got our pizza, I was way past starving so I wolfed it down. I ordered the cappricciosa which comes with olives, mushrooms, artichokes, eggs, ham, tomato, and mozzarella. It seemed like there would be a lot of toppings, but it was just a few of each of the vegetables. Either way, the pizza was steaming and definitely enough to fill me up. I however, didn't think the flavors were amazing. First of all, the pizza is incredibly thin so it is more like 2 tortillas stacked up on each other. I personally don't like thin crust so I didn't like how the pizza kept cracking and flaking. The flavors are really light, not overly seasoned, and it definitely wasn't that made my taste buds go on a roller coaster. Weird not, the pizza does hold up if you take leftovers and I really enjoyed it the second day (hah!). I didn't have a problem with any of the servers, but it was a wait so fill up on those appetizers! Overall, 3.5: the pizza wasn't amazing but I still enjoyed the meal!

Yelp
Doesn't get better than this. Truly amazing pizza full of flavors. Don't forget to try Suppli which is what they are known for lol

Yelp
Incredibly amazing!!!!! The best and I mean, THE BEST pizza I've ever had in my life! If you're into thin crust like myself, you will fall in love! The pizza at Ai Marmi is 100% fresh. You can literally watch the pizzaioli roll the dough and make the pizzas to order. The pizzas and calzones bake very fast, but to perfection. Unlike the U.S., where Americans tend to load on toppings, these pizza are enjoyable with a just a few toppings. Most of the pizzas listed on the menu only consists of 1-3 toppings. We initially ordered just one pizza to share for two, but ended up ordering a second one because it was just TOO GOOD!!!! We ordered the pizza con funghi e salsiccia the first time (mushroom and sausage) and it was loaded with mushrooms and the sausage was also the best I've had on a pizza. Check out my photos! Second pizza, we ordered mushroom and added onions. It's not on the menu, but they were very kind to accommodate our request and we even seen them chop up the onions. If in Rome and in the area, do don't hesitate to come here. There's both indoor and outdoor seatings!

Yelp
I think this place is a must if you want to get that Italian pizza experience. The waiters are a little disinterested because they can be! They serve freaking good pizza. The oven is right in front, so you can see your pizza getting made. I got sausage and mushrooms, and my boyfriend got prosciutto. Both delicious, but I think I prefer Dar Poeta. This pizza is a little more oilier. I also got the suppli and fried cod fish. Suppli was pretty good, but the fried cod was just way also just way too oily for me. Not a fan.
google avatar

Jason G.

Yelp
The pizza is truly great and at a great price. But our service was a gruff waiter who clearly did not enjoy serving tourists, even those who tried to communicate in Italian. And it's on one of the busier sidewalks in Trastevere - so no ambiance. But it's all worth it for the pizza.

Yelp
Loved it! They sat us immediately and We had veggie starter and each had a pizza. Everything was excellent!!

Paul B.

Yelp
The best pizza in all of Rome, our favorites were sausage and vegetarian. This is a place the locals eat at, the pricing is reasonable and watching them make the pizzas is pretty fun too. Really, everything we tried was excellent and we went back multiple times.
google avatar

Yelp
This place makes you feel like you really know what you're doing with your travel life. After carefully watching people while standing in line I discovered the precise way of order was: a bacalao and/ or suppli per person, a friend artichoke and a half carafe of house wine or a beer. Then sit and enjoy these treats as you wait for a margarita pizza to share. It's the way I saw soooo many people order, I did the same and I went back the next evening so basically I loved it. Also be aware there may be a long line, this place is bustling but they never rush you or push you out. So well mannered and for the vibe honestly so polite.

Yelp
I came in for some late night pizza and snacks on the recommendation of a local. The place was perfect for what it was, a casual spot to grab some local cuisine, it's also open pretty darn late, which is great. I tried their pizza and arancini rice balls, both were pretty stellar. Also managed to try some local Italian beer that was in the vein of a bud light. Overall this is a worthwhile stop on your travels and love that it's open late!

Yelp
This place. The vibe is right...and it is just off the path of busy Testavere...so not terribly touristy. The pizza was amazing and NOTHING like I have tasted Imagine a freshly made tortilla...you know warm and melty and crispy bits in all the right places...then imagine it huge and just a tad thicker. Now add some crazy food cheese, butcher made sausage hunks and cover it in zucchini flowers. Eat outside at 1am with everyone speaking Italian all around you. Imagine handsome Italian servers...good and inexpensive house wine (think chianti). We took some to go for lunch and they gladly provided a box.

Yelp
Best pizza I had in Rome by far. Chewy dough and thin crust with that delicious char in all the right places. We got one pizza with squash blossom with sausage (white pizza, no tomato sauce) and another with peppers; both were delicious and very different. They went perfectly with the house red wine. No complaints here. As others have said, this place fills up quickly so go on the early side or be prepared to wait. It doesn't get much better than sitting outside on the sidewalk on a summer night in Rome with a view of the wood-fired pizza oven inside churning out incredible 'za.

Yelp
Great local pizza joint in Trastevere. Creme caramel was awesome too. Ordered a liter of wine, way too much for just the two of us. Order Hale a liter. It's not on the menu by they gave it. Passed the rest on to the couple at the next. No harm no foul.
google avatar

Samir K.

Yelp
Good place and I appreciated that most of the clientele were locals. Pizza was delicious, we ended up getting another because my wife and I were so hungry. We also had a half liter of wine and just kind of hung out and enjoyed the feeling and lifestyle of sitting outdoors in Rome, noshing on pizza and other appetizers. Cool place in what we were told was a hip area.
google avatar

Curtis K.

Yelp
Any stars are awarded purely for ambiance. The streets of Trastevere are more colorful people watching than Brooklyn. And our timing just happened to coincide with the arrival of a magician as well as fireworks. But let's face it none go f this was the restaurants doing. The restaurant we have to thank for an 90 minute wait for our three pizza to arrive - marinara mushroom and squash blossom. All three had one thing in common. Congealy cheese and mounds of uncooked flour scattered throughout like some kind of cruel joke. The only saving grace was we were hungry and had subsequent reservations at seu and that this meal was pretty cheap. Oh I forgot to mention the Chianti is stored in some hot warehouse and nowhere close to room tenpetatur. Come on marni do better.
google avatar

Tushar C.

Yelp
Hype. All hype. Several people including locals had recommended we check this place out for authentic Roma pizza but it failed to hit the mark for us. There was a long wait for mediocre pizza. It was nice to see it all being made fresh and the lively crowds dining around us. But the pizza itself was not memorable. We ordered the margherita and funghi. I found the mushrooms to be undercooked if cooked at all in the funghi. And the pizza dough also seemed undercooked despite asking if it could be done crispy. The service was also really slow. All in all, go here for the hype. Not the culinary experience.
google avatar

Pablo I.

Yelp
This is the place to go. it's 100 years olds and its the real deal. Its the place where the locals go and the one they recommend. It does not have any fancy decoration, actually it has almost no decoration at all: its just about the food. Great food, served really quickly.
google avatar

Louis P.

Yelp
Mmmhhhmm pizza! Who doesn't enjoy a really good pizza? No one. Came across this place while wandering through Rome and stopped here for dinner. Located a few streets off the main drags where tourists typically wonder you'll find a very good pizza restaurant. I came at just the right time around 8pm and was promptly seated. The wait will fluctuate, because when l left there were probably about 20 people trying to get in. The staff was ok. Not overly friendly and actually a little standoff-ish. They don't speak English though, at all. Pointing and using my fingers seemed to work. I ordered the sausage pizza. It took a little while to come out, but it was crowded and well worth the wait. The pizza was like a punch to the face. It was sooo good! Overall, I'd recommend coming here. Just know Italian or be prepared to gesture a lot.
google avatar

Katy P.

Yelp
Our Airbnb host recommended this place, specifically told us to try the rice balls and margarita pizza. Went on Saturday night and had a long line but it moved quickly. Only waited about 15 min. Pizza was well worth it! Try to sit inside and watch them at the oven, it's amazing.
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
Ordered mushroom sausage and mozzarella and zucchini with sausage _ very light crust, sausage was not too garlicky? Ask for zucchini and not zucchini blossoms Ordered 1lt of house wine- if ur not picky on wine, it was tasty and went with atmosphere Be prepared to wait In line for patio spot, with abrupt service and slow.. however- enjoy the eve, remember where you are and take it in and live the moment . We arrived at 7 with 3-4couples ahead and we're seated in an hour. - food came within 45 mins- total wait to eat just under 2 hours 2 pizzas and a litre of wine enjoying and taking in Rome - 26euro!! Positive! Tip: remain curteous and polite to servers to help find seating ;)

Yelp
We went to Ai Marmi on our last night in Rome and it was a great dinner to end our trip. We tried the sausage and zucchini flower pizza and a sausage and mushroom pizza - very good! We tried the deep fried risotto and cheese balls, also good. There was a line around the corner, so definitely get there early for dinner (knowing dinner in Italy doesn't start until 8 ).
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
This place is what you would expect from a busy pizzeria in one of Rome's cooler neighborhoods. I love it here and when in Rome it's a must. Only warning is you will want to make more than one trip during your stay in rome. Tip: There may be a short line when you arrive so don't show up hangry.
google avatar

Jesper H.

Yelp
Great place for an evening pizza. The outside is packed with locals, celebrating each other - and life itself it seems. Their pizza's are very good - the rest we got, not so much. Great for pizza - excellent for the atmosphere
google avatar

Joanna T.

Yelp
I was worried. It had been 4 or 5 years since my last visit to Marmi and I'd been warned it was mostly tourists now by fellow Yelpers. Would it still be the Best Pizza on Earth? In short, yes. I wanted to marry this pizza - it was that good. My favorite US pizza tasted like turds on a plate in comparison. It was still cramped beyond belief, loud and crowded. The same guy was there making pizzas and the waiters were still slamming plates on the marble tables. I'm sure that there are better "locals" pizza places in Rome. Places that loser tourists like me will never find. I'm ok with that - Marmi, will you marry me?
google avatar

M H.

Yelp
It's 10:30pm on a Sunday night- no place open right- wrong. This inside -outside restaurant is the real local Roman Place to eat. Recommended by the young man at the desk of the hotel- "Don't worry if they throw the plates at you- they are nice and the food is good". So we did it- Fried rice ball with cheese inside is tasty- suppli . Pizza good- time open is fantastic! -------- Evidently, this is known to be one of the oldest pizzerias in Rome- since 1912 I was told. Some locals call the inside the "obituary" (I think they meant mortuary!) because of the marble tables inside.

Yelp
Our first stop in Rome! This pizzeria is a MUST visit! Their fresh wood fired pizzas are unlike anything I've ever had before!! Also, the staff are so friendly and nice! The experience was amazing! We ordered the pizza margarita and the prosciutto pizza! Both amazing! It was 10pm and packed so clearly it's a great spot with amazing food! :) e n j o y

Yelp
I frequent Trastevere when I visit Roma and this time I got to this place with my friends. Yay!! This is a LOCAL spot - keep that quiet because I don't want to see the tourist invasion. Everything is stripped back to basics here. Basic layout of the restaurant, basic chairs and tables (marble, gotta keep it Italy style right!!) The food - simple, classic, delicious!!! We had a selection of starters, pizza and calzone. Everything, fresh, hot and so, so good! Service is fine. Naw, you are not getting over the top smiles and chatts and that is the way it should be! Prompt seating and orders taken. Actually, I think the staff like to be 'doing things' it creates a buzz in the place. Don't be looking for anything fancy in here. This is all about honest; no muss, no fuss, real Italian food.
google avatar

Saeed G.

Yelp
The best pizza in town This is an authentic place out of the tourist area where locals get some inexpensive pizza and good house wine

Don't expect excellent service! Do expect amazing food! Definitely recommend the fried artichoke!

Yelp
When abroad it's always hard to find a place to eat but I was determined to check as many reviews as possible which brought us to Ai Marmi one night. The place is absolutely packed with students and locals, I dined at 9pm which is kind of normal in Italy. It's a very basic casual restaurant with plenty of seating. I had in my mind that I wanted two eat two things in Rome - Suppli and Pizza. Actually carbonara too but that's another story. I ordered their suppli and it was absolutely delicious. Similar to arancini it is crumbed and fried, inside it's tomato rice with mozzarella cheese. Hot, gooey and crunchy. The pizzas come overhanging the plate, piping hot with melted cheese. The toppings are simple but sufficient. We tried the quattro formaggi which tasted amazing with a good balance of the four cheeses. Quite often the blue sticks out too much but that wasn't the case. I also ordered a Capricciosa with olives, ham and egg. Absolutely delicious. The base is thin, there is no bloating after and the wood fired taste is great. The pizzas don't come sliced so for once I was actually eating pizza with a knife and fork! I'd definitely recommend this place if you're there. It's not right in the centre but easily walkable. While you're there check out the market stalls nearby too.

Peri H.

Yelp
Good pizza...terrible service. Expect to wait. Wait a longggggg time. Pizza was really good. But honestly not sure if the service was worth it....

Yelp
Our first dinner in Rome in 2005 and I remember it like it was yesterday. The pizza was perfection, and a liter of the house wine did the trick. This is a busy, lively restaurant frequented by locals. This is not a quiet, romantic place for the oldies. Come here to soak it in, have fun, and enjoy Rome at it's finest. The sidewalk tables are prime location. This is why you came to Italy. Live it and love it! The only problem? You'll compare every other pizza YOU EVER EAT to this place...and you will continue to be disappointed. It is however, one of the best memories of my life so far.

Yelp
My fiancé and I did a fun pasta cooking class in Rome. At the end of the class, our instructors highly recommend Ai Marmi as quality pizza in the area. On our last day in Rome we walked down to Ai Marmi. It was a 40 minute hike but by God it was worth it. We got there early shortly after opening and while we were the second group to be seated inside (reservations required for patio seating) the place quickly filled in after us. Our server was polite and quickly took our orders. I got the sausage pizza and my fiancé the veggie pizza. We also ordered Bruschetta to start. The bruschetta came out in a couple minutes and was quite good. Lots of fresh tomatoes with a good zing to it. Fresh toasted bread as well. The pizza took a little while because of how many orders were going in. But man, just watching the cooks work was impressive. Ai Marmi may not have a lot of frills or fancy décor but damned fi they don't make some amazing pizza. Without a doubt Ai Marmi was the best pizza we found in Italy. I'm drooling just thinking about it. If you are in the area and is not too busy I highly recommend checking out Ai Marmi
google avatar

Nicola J.

Yelp
Eat like a local. This place was recommended to me by London housemate. Crazy busy place that won't break the bank and is surely locally loved. Always crowded so you'll wait but the pizza will be great and the wine carafe for 8.50 euros won't be bad either. Loved this and think it gave our Roman trip exactly why it needed!
google avatar

Milla G.

Yelp
Probably the best pizza I have tasted in my life. Recommended spot from an acquaintance studying abroad in Rome. It seems that the locals love this place, but the tourists have started to discover it as well. Casual sidewalk seating, do not expect fancy service. Very affordable. ++We ordered the ZUCCHINI PIZZA, it was glorious. ++The fried Zucchini Appetizer was also really surprisingly amazing. My husband got the Mushroom pizza to go, and by the time we ate it at home, it was soggy and cold, so I couldn't tell if it was not as special as the Zucchini Pizza (I think the cheese on the Zucchini Pizza was more special), or if it was just that it was not the same because we had let it get soggy and cold! Also tried the Suppli here as recommended, and it was tasty but fried rice ball with cheese inside is a little too heavy for me in general- and this was the only Suppli I had in Italy, so I cannot compare it with other spots. No frills spot, different than any pizza you have had in the US (get the ones with Mozzarella).
google avatar

Lesley W.

Yelp
This is the best pizza we had while in Italy! We were lucky that this was close to our airbnb. We noticed the line, night after night, and decided to look it up. Lo and behold, we better get down there! They mostly have pizza here, no pasta. I don't think you can really go wrong here, but I had a speck and gorgonzola and it was deliciously stinky. We also shared a more typical sausage and somethin' else, and I loved it too! We had a hard time picking a favorite out of just two, so I recommend getting as many as your group can handle! Get your Peroni and Roman Pizza here!
google avatar

Fahd A.

Yelp
Best pizza we had in Rome. Super thin and the staff is very friendly. The food was excellent

Alev T.

Yelp
This place suggested by a friend and also one of blogger who is living in Rome. I think this place is so overrated. I ordered funghi pizza however I could not finish my pizza since I cannot get any funghi and also mozerella taste. I also don't like the atmosphere. I have eaten better pizza even in Turkey.
google avatar

Lindsey G.

Yelp
If you're two, don't bother-- especially waiting for an outside seat. Preference was continually given for large groups who were pulled out of the back of the line ahead of several couples that had been waiting for an hour.
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
We didn't have a reservation and the restaurant was full at 10pm. They were able to seat us inside however which were grateful for although it was terribly hot due to the huge pizza oven!! Being inside was great though to see the pizza team working together to get out approx 40 pizzas per cooking cycle. Amazing crispy base on the pizzas - though there was no displays of dough spinning. Also I'd recommend the suppli and zucchini flowers to start - you'll only need one of each to leave room for the pizza. Be prepared to wait for your pizza as this place is so popular. Our waiter was great even though we spoke very little Italian.
google avatar

Samer M.

Yelp
Very popular place. Quite crowded but outdoor seating is nice. Authentic Italian pizzas were delicious! A full pizza is for 8 to 9 euros so prices are reasonable.

Yelp
This was one of the best pizza places we tried in Italy. One of them was big enough for two of us, but locals were taken 'em down on a 1-per-person scale. We also had the house red and the parma ham w/ mozzarella. The mozzarella stood out the most to me on both the pizza and with the ham -- super creamy and just melt-in-your-mouth good. It's a casual joint but it gets busy, so try to get there around 8 or so. Fun to sit by the window and watch the teenagers hanging out outside. The service was good, not stellar, but whatever -- the food is why you're there!

Yelp
Really enjoyed pizza and bruschetta after a long day today! The veggies were really fresh and the service was prompt. Initially the place was empty, but by 7:45 the place was packed with people! The stafff didn't rush is to leave and we enjoyed ourselves.

Yelp
The best Roman style pizza in town!! I had the zucchini flower with sausage pizza and all of the flavors came through. The crust is thin compared to pizza napoleatana and slightly singed to give it more flavor. Line was out the door by the time I left!
