The 37 Best Restaurants in St. Louis, Missouri

"Akar is the most magnificent restaurant in St. Louis that too few have had the pleasure to visit. Chef and owner Bernie Lee roots his food in memories of the Malaysian cuisine he grew up eating — and then amps up the flavors by a power of 10 with additional spice, extra texture, and more finessed ingredient combinations. Don’t miss the gnocchi served in a Malaysian curry, or seasonal specials like recent dishes in which Lee coaxes unexpected flavors out of locally grown maitake mushrooms." - Holly Fann, Joel Crespo

The 32 Essential St. Louis Restaurants

"To garner some understanding of Akar, located at the end of a residential street flanked by large trees and impressive homes in the central suburb of Clayton, you need to garner some understanding of Bernie Lee. The winsome, cosmopolitan, always finely dressed chef and owner of the small restaurant enjoys little luxuries and fine details. At Akar he serves food firmly rooted in the tradition of Malaysian cuisine, combining flavors, ingredients, and culinary techniques to create dynamic dishes that conservative diners might find incoherent. Don’t miss the soy-braised short rib with sambal demi-glace, Chilean sea bass bathed in a bonito curry shrimp bouillon, and vegan sweet potato gnocchi with Malaysian curry." - Holly Fann

We did an early Friday night dinner here since we had heard so much about it. Our initial introduction was quite awkward and unwelcoming. It set the tone for a dinner that made us feel like we were a bother. Upon walking in one of the servers asked if we had a reservation to which we answered no. She then asked if we preferred to be seated inside or outside. We stated outside and she invited us to sit anywhere we pleased. We sat at a table for four (two small tables put together) since my husband and I like sitting next to each other. Less than 2 minutes after sitting, a man who we now know is chef B. Lee, came over and asked if anyone else was joining us. We answered no and he said we needed to move to another table (other 4 seaters) or he would take one of the tables away and make it a 2 seater. We moved but it was just the strangest thing because 15 minutes later another couple was seated there. The server was polite and kind, the food decent. I loved the blue crab donabe. The fried chicken appetizer was fine but the soba noodle was described to have a peanut sauce and we could not find that flavour. It was pretty bland. My husband thought his lamb was decent. In addition to my initial grievance, I noticed the chef routinely delivering dishes to all other tables and conversing with them but not ours. It was odd and felt like we were not welcome. Overall not sure I’ll return since food is only part of the experience. The service, especially from the chef, was disappointing and I urge him to do better. Happy to spend any amount of money an artist assigns as a value to their craft but there are expectations the higher the price tag.

From the moment we walked into Akar, the ambiance set the tone — stylish and comfortable. It struck just the right balance for an evening out. Emily, our waitress, made the evening seamless. She was warm, attentive, and thoughtful with her recommendations — and she kept our table looking spotless and running smoothly the entire time. The food? Absolutely delicious. We started with the scallops and lobster ravioli as appetizers, and the kitchen was more than happy to add a fourth to each so our party of 4 could all enjoy. The scallops were beautifully seared, clean-tasting, and paired with forbidden rice that added a nuttinesa and texture. The lobster ravioli was rich and creamy without being too heavy — the perfect indulgence. Emily suggested the cabbage as an accompaniment, and it was a standout — tangy, crisp, and refreshingly bright. It cut through the richness of the dishes with just the right balance. For mains, we shared the duck, the short rib, the fish of the day (halibut), and the shrimp drunken noodles. Every dish was spot-on: the short rib was fall-off-the-bone tender, the duck was rich and satisfying, the halibut was fresh and perfectly cooked (and honestly, the sauce deserves to be bottled and sold), and the shrimp noodles brought a spicy kick that was flavorful but never overwhelming. Even the drinks — which were all a little outside my usual go-to choices — were fresh, inventive, and really tasty. Akar delivered across the board: atmosphere, service, food, and drinks. We left happy and full.

Google
I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the wait staff. The drinks were unique. The one i had, serai, was very good. I lived the addition of black pepper on the rim. The pickled cabbage is hands down the best I've ever had. I would order that by the bucket! The other two meals i had were mediocre. The crispy chicken was fine. But the chicken itself was under seasoned and the breading was too much. It distracted from the amazing herbs and glaze. The breading was initially crispy but began falling off. Id have preferred a lighter maybe cornmeal breading or none at all with a crispy skin. The scallop dish was mediocre as well. Everything was good until i got to the orzo pasta. Pasta was not necessary. It was very starchy/floury? The dish would have made a great appetizer if the lobster curry was lessened and the orzo removed. The mango/scallop pairing was great! The olive oil cake for dessert was very pleasant. Not too sweet. There was a lingering bitterness though but it isn't ruin the experience. Overall I'd try it again but try other dishes to see if the more traditional Malaysian foods are better.

The location is peaceful. It's a small place though, Inside seating is almost claustrophobic. We visited on a Wednesday, only 2 waiters for the entire place, not a welcoming reception. Ordered Gnocchi w/ Malaysian curry which is good and flavourful and Broccolini, which is just okay. Everything took a lot of time, we've been waiting for about an hour overall for the entire visit. Not worth the price or time if you're a food enthusiast.

Wow. This place is a flavor lovers dream. Incredible knowledge of flavors and how they play together is applied to every dish. I would say this is a Malaysian fusion restaurant. East asian elements. The lamb special had a bit of Middle Eastern flare. The menu rotates. Specialls very. Desserts vary. We sampled everything from the apps to the desserts. It's worth the price. Which isn't bad when you consider what you are getting and the ingredients involved. Excellent service. Great ambiance. Call ahead to make a reservation. Parking can be iffy. Street parking out front is free after 5pm, but is usually gone by 6pm.

Tried this place for the first time the other day, and will be back! The food was delicious and interesting! I really loved the cocktail with thai chili and togarashi on the rim. The risotto and soft shell crab were both fantastic. They were great about accommodating dietary sensitivities and the staff was very nice! The patio was lovely.

Nice and cozy place near the University area. Just bumped into this while searching for south east Asian cuisine on Google. Definitely worth the 4.8 stars that the reviewers have left. Excellent ambience (small but cute and cozy). Delicious food. And awesome service. They reserved a place for us inside (outside is free seating). Helped us through the menu providing great recommendations. The food was great. I loved the chicken as it had just the right balance of crispness and juicy and tenderness. The duck was tender and the ravioli was great. The ice cream was something I never tried before and I liked it very much (plain vanilla with a hint of coconut milk and pistachios). Would recommend anyone to give it a shot and I'll likely visit it again when I am in town.

Google
This place wow’s me every time! I’ve been trying to eat through their menu and I can say everything has been a delightful experience. Service is good for a slow dining experience. The ambiance is very moody and intimate. Rating this place a 5/5 because it really has that WOW factor :)

Yelp
The flavors from this place were absolutely insane. One of the first slightly upscale meals I've had that truly blew my mind. Favorite dishes: Lobster risotto, lamb shank in curry sauce

Yelp
This is one of the most interesting restaurants in St Louis. It's Malaysian fusion and accessible to the midwest palate. It's in a nice part of town. However, after 6pm, parking can be a bit hard to come by. As for our experience, it was great! Made reservations by phone (wish they would do online booking via Opentable, Resy, or Tock) a couple of days earlier and showed up on time. I was able to look at their menu online so had a good idea of what we'd order. I wish they would have put their wine menu online as well. Consequently, we brought our own wine (Aubert Pinot Noir). Corkage was a fair $25. As for food, we ordered a variety. The crispy chicken appetizer (must order) was AMAZING, and probably my favorite dish of the night. The lobster rangoon was tasty but not so memorable. The curry gnocchi was nothing like I'd imagine but it was delicious. We also had the duck which was pretty good, as was the lamb shank which was huge. For dessert, we had the green tea tiramisu (YUM!) and the bread pudding (ok). Ambiance was nice and intimate, not loud. It was a great dinner. We'll be back!

Yelp
The food was okay. The ambiance and seating was nice! They seemed like they were pushing so hard for us to order alcoholic beverages ,3 different waiters including the manager approached us that day,it was kind of a weird encounter. I'll definitely be coming back for drinks but likely not for the food. Outside seating is nice! A lot of street parking that's free!

Yelp
Akar has been a restaurant I have been waiting to try for quite a while now! Absolutely lives up to hype very delicious and unique blend of flavors in a great area of town. Smaller space so reservation is recommended. Parking is difficult to find but was told by the waiter that I could use the laundromats parking next door next time. Will definitely be back. A fancy, high end restaurant great place to celebrate something special!

Yelp
Good food The flavors are different. Worth a try. The service was nice and friendly. The drinks were good - wish they had more of a cocktail menu. We sat outside. Patio seating is first come first serve

Yelp
The ambiance was perfect. This is such a cute restaurant with big beautiful windows and a nice outdoor patio. My party had a window seat with bench and chair seating. We started off with drinks and water. I chose the NA Lychee and ginger. It was perfectly refreshing. 5/5 We ordered the lobster rangoon and the crispy cauliflower and were very impressed with the flavors and quality. My lobster rangoon had real lobster claw meat in it. The crispy cauliflower is making my mouth water just thinking about it, it's definitely a crowd pleaser. 5/5 I ordered the oolong duck entree and here is where it all fell apart. The duck breast was cooked well done which left it a bit tough. I didn't taste the delicate oolong flavor at all probably due to the overcooked meat. I was terribly disappointed in the dish. The butternut squash puree and mushrooms didn't do anything for the dish flavor or texture wise. So the entire entree was a complete miss for me. 2/5 By the end of the meal our waiter was ushering us away. Our view was nice, ambiance and starters were great. The entree was not worth it in my opinion. Maybe I'll get to sample more of the menu in the future? Time will tell...

Yelp
I love how they are always patio ready! As soon as it gets warm, their patio is open for dining. Reservations required for indoor dining, but outdoor patio is first come first serve. They expanded their indoor dining in Feb. 2023, so there are more seating inside. Akar is my favorite restaurant in the area but it has recently dropped some points in food and service. The waiter didn't seem very friendly and the food was a little lack luster. The paper menu I received was wrinkled and dirty. Blossom cocktail $15 - I enjoyed the strong lychee flavor of this drink. Lobster Rangoon "ravioli" (3) $19 - More rangoon than ravioli, these were stuffed with chunks of lobster and creamy filling. Delicious with the mango dip. A Mushroom pate $19 - The pate was interesting and went well with the puffy fried rice cracker. B- Short Ribs $43 - This is off the bone, melt in your mouth piece of meat served on a bed of smashed peas and side of roasted carrots. Reminds me of a classic pot roast dish. B Street parking is free after 5p. .|\---/| | @_@ | ..\_^_/..2024

Yelp
This is the BEST food in the St. Louis area. Hands down. Worth every penny. The wait staff is professional and friendly. The space is cozy, comfortable, and clean. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Food: 5 Stars Service: 5 Stars Read my previous review for my full thoughts on Akar. Wanted to update my review with the added note of the expansion of this venue and include new photos. If you haven't been, add this place to your list of places to try!

Yelp
Wow, Why did I wait so long to try this place? Every dish was packed full of flavor, perfectly cooked, and just served to overall impress. Service was impeccable and drinks were spot on! We started with the lobster rangoon and octopus special. The octopus was definitely a stand out dish! For mains I chose the gnocchi and my husband the tea brined duck. I could seriously eat the gnocchi all winter long. Perfect comfort food! I tried a bite of husband's duck which was really tasty. For dessert, we chose bread pudding. One of the best(and most beautiful) I have ever had. It was a bit more similar to a cinnamon roll or monkey bread type texture while still being melt in mouth delicious.

Yelp
Wow. Wow wow wow. I've been. Hearing about Akar for years and just never managed to get there. Everything was fantastic. It's a small zen space with a nice patio. The service was warm, friendly and knowledgeable! We started with the lobster rangoon and mushroom pate. Excellent and enough to share. The entrees were fantastic. Fresh, beautiful seafood, and perfectly cooked. I had bread pudding for dessert with orange, toasted almonds and sweet whipped cream. The menu is small and I had a little sticker shock. But after the meal I get it! It will be a special treat for my family but if you can swing it, go!

Yelp
I used to be a huge fan of this place, but sadly tonight' changed that. We have been here several times and it was always a treat even though getting reservations is not an easy process. Tonight though, yikes! It is my husband's 60th birthday. He is from Malaysia ( it is a Malaysian inspired restaurant and the owner/chef is also from Malaysia.) I called about 2 weeks prior to see if we could do anything. The lady I talked to said absolutely and she would talk to the chef and call me back. She didn't. I called day of to confirm reservations and remind them. I was willing to pay - how many 60th birthdays does one get? Apparently they do not need or want our business. Chicken had significant gristle. Service was decent. Jerks said "Happy Birthday" on our way out. We will not be back and although our $1000 a year spend there will not be missed hopefully this review saves someone else's disappointment. I mean why wouldn't she have told me when I called today that they were unable to do anything? Very very disappointing. Update: The short rib we took home was half fat and gristle. Just very disappointing.

Yelp
Such an inventive and delicious menu. All appetizers are fantastic, especially the tip with crackers and garlic noodles. One of the best cocktails menu in town! Lamb is always the best when it's on the menu.

Yelp
Came here the day after my wedding. Was referred to this place by a close friend and made reservations for 6:45 on a Sunday. Was greeted by Curtis who later turned out to be our server as well. Service, food, ambiance was all top level. We ordered several apps and sides and it turned out to be more than enough for 2. My wife is vegan and there were several vegan options as well as vegetarian options that could be prepared vegan. Curtis service was absolutely incredible and he made our night. Food was phenomenal but it was the service and Curtis's personality that truly made the evening exceptional. Would return without hesitation.

Yelp
Came to this intimate restaurant for my birthday. I've been here many times before but never sat inside as it was extremely small and tight but now they have expanded. I ordered the scallops and my boyfriend ordered the short rib. We also shared lobster rangoon. The lobster rangoon was perfect with the mango dipping sauce. The scallops were a tad too salty and peppery for my taste, but the short rib made up for it - rich and flavorful, although a bit fatty. Drinks were good and the service was ok. Overall, a cozy and romantic spot with great food, just be sure to book ahead!

Yelp
Second time going to Akar and once again, it didn't disappoint. First time was on a whim. Didn't know what it was, loved it, back for more, this time with friends. Meal began with cocktails. Good choices. Had the sayonara (was a drink with whiskey). I wound up getting another one after that. "Mocktails" options if you're not a boozer. We got the okra, cabbage and potstickers to share for apps. Very good. I'd recommend all three. For my main, I got the Pad Kee Mao with 5 big shrimp. Also hitting the table was the duck, gnocchi and lamb shank special. Everyone was happy. Waiter was attentive and didn't hover. He gets 5 out of 5 stars. Nobody wanted dessert. Everyone was full and satisfied. If I were to nitpick one thing, I'd say the place was loud. But, unless you have sensory issues, that shouldn't prevent you from trying Akar out.

Johnathan D.

Yelp
The service here was exceptional. The flavors in our food were also amazing (chili shrimp dumplings, lobster risotto, duck breast). However, risotto came out room temperature and was a little under but I appreciated the bite it had and the PHENOMENAL lobster pieces in it. Duck flavor was out of this world but uniformity was an issue with parts of it being too dry to eat. Definitely worth returning!
google avatar

Yelp
The food, aesthetics, and service was amazing. We tried the crab Rangoon w/ mango sauce, the lamb shank and lobster risotto! 10/10 highly recommended!

Yelp
Very impressive dinner. The food is all presented very nicely and had great flavor. My wife and I really enjoyed our meal. And my old fashioned was one of the best! Service was really good and ambiance was perfect for a nice date night. Tables were a bit close together but even on a busy night the overall noise level was low.

Yelp
An intimate dining experience with an Asian fusion forward menu that brings bold flavors. We enjoyed the crispy chicken appetizer - crispy tender juicy chicken thigh topped with pickled red onion, peppers, cilantro with a smokey chipotle dipping sauce. For entrees we had the tea brined duck and gnocchi in a Malaysian curry sauce with mushroom and crispy chickpeas. Both dishes brought big flavor with each bite and each component was well thought out down to the accompaniments and garnishes. Service was superb and felt very genuine. A great place to celebrate a special occasion, they take great care of you here.

Yelp
The ambiance, service, and the food were amazing!! Like really good. I ordered the lamb shank and my husband the short ribs along with a Japanese whisky flight. The chef does an awesome play on flavors in the dishes. I can't wait to go again.

Yelp
Just different. Great addition to the trifecta there off Wydown. I eat mostly veg, so this abides I just want to take people here.

Yelp
Such a hidden gem in STL, and so glad I got to try out this spot. It's perfect for date night, special occasions, or a spontaneous nice dinner :) Great selection of wines, cocktails, and mocktails. We ordered family style and shared 3 apps and 3 mains for 4 people (I'd say it was the perfect amount). Highlights were the duck breast, gnocchi, taiwanese cabbage, short rib. Great service and such a lovely, calming ambiance. I'd highly recommend :)

Yelp
Amazing food and service! Did a take out meal this time, and it was totally worth it!

Stella S.

Yelp
Our waitress was absolutely amazing and the definition of polite and attentive. I have a severe shellfish allergy and she could not have been more considerate and alert to it. My friends and I will definitely be returning here soon, and cannot wait to experience the staff and environment of Akar again.

Yelp
A #perfectdatenight resides at @akarclayton We were seated promptly and our server took care of us wonderfully! We enjoyed everything but hands down my favorite was the #lambshank w/ rice and #brusselsprouts it was tender and bursting with flavor! The rice was cooked to my liking (tender) and the dish was super filling! Our cocktails were awesome too! The #lycheemartini was and we had an #espressomartini for the nightcap! You have to pay them a visit! Make sure you tell them #followchi4food sent you!

Yelp
Check out Akar for high quality dishes, top notch service, and a cozy vibe. I went to Akar with my family for my sister's 30th birthday. Many dishes were amazing, but the highlights were the fried okra, cabbage, and gnocchi. There were some many incredible flavors and textures. I can't wait to go back. I think Akar would also be amazing for a date night or a night out with friends. Just make sure to make a reservation well in advance.
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
Akar is a unique place to experience dining. The inside is a modern setting with only a handful of tables. We started with a round of espresso martinis. I wish I took a photo. It was one of the best in STL. We decided on the eggplant, cabbage, bread and lobster rolls to begin. The flavors will give you quite and experience in your mouth. The miso butter on with the bread is such a simple pleasure. We then got a shrimp noodle entree and chicken dish, both were equally delightful. I loved the variety of flavors that are used in all the dishes
google avatar

Rishi J.

Yelp
This is very small place but with very good food and atmosphere. This is Asian fusion kind of place. I visited here for lunch with a colleague, the parking is on the street so we had to find a spot. We ordered couple of dishes and shared - Banh Mi ( vegan) and mapo tofu ( vegan ). I believe the portions a bit smaller than expected , may be we should have ordered 3 dishes or an appetizer. I would highly recommend this place for trying this out.
google avatar

Talya M.

Yelp
I had the Pad Kee Mao and was not disappointed. Slightly sweet, which I don't usually enjoy in an entree; but it was complimented well by savory and a bit of spice. My only complaint would be that the restaurant is not as spacious as it appears in the pictures. Adjacent tables were closer than I would have liked.
google avatar

Zach H.

Yelp
This is a great restaurant in Clayton. It is romantic atmosphere but can also get very loud and busy due to size constraints. The food is fantastic here. Everything from the short rib to the sea bass to the awesome drunken noodles was all delicious. The lobster rangoon was smacking. Fried okra could be split between four people. Parking can be a challenge may have to walk.

Yelp
We enjoyed a night at this cozy and charming restaurant recently. Servers were prompt and friendly. Having eaten here several times in the past I was a bit disappointed in the food. Somehow the care, and attention to detail for this price point seemed a little off.

Linda O.

Yelp
It took 36 minutes for a rushed waiter to ask if we wanted a drink. We had to ask for menus. It took 1.15 hours from arrival to get appetizers. The food is good, not great, and we felt completely ignored. Just not worth it....

Lisa L.

Yelp
Food is very good with unique combinations that work well together and they have a nice variety of drinks. I was part of a group of 6 and was disappointed to learn that they would not do separate checks beyond 4 which wouldn't work for a group of 6, so we had to figure everything out on our own. Our group has been going out together monthly for over 30 years and have never experienced this. I would go back but not take a large group.

Yelp
We've heard about this place for awhile and finally was in the city to give it a try. It did not disappoint! The food was phenomenal! Highly recommend! The service was excellent. We were consistently being taken care of...super small but classy ambiance. Check it out!

Yelp
Lucked out with the last 6:45pm reservation this past Thursday, and can fully appreciate why they do 3 seating times and ask you to be done at a certain time when booking. VERY intimate space, with room for just about 10-12 people inside. The service was outstanding, we loved our waiter. I started with a tequila cocktail similar to a spicy marg - it was SPICY. We started with bread + miso butter and the eggplant. For mains, we split the fish and the udon noodles. Everything was incredible save the bread, which said fresh-baked but we are 99.9% sure was take and bake. We will definitely be back, we couldn't get enough of the flavors and creativity of the menu.

Yelp
This restaurant definitely lived up to the hype! Some of my girl friends and I made a reservation for dinner on Friday night. We were seated at a table inside their heated tent, and it was super cozy. I was slightly worried it would be cold because it was 27 degrees Fahrenheit outside, but the tent was nice and toasty. Their drink menu is nicely curated, and they have unique cocktails. I was feeling a light wine, and our server recommended a glass of their riesling. It was very refreshing and had a perfect amount of sweetness - it was a good riesling. My friends got a glass of chardonnay and the blossom cocktail. The chardonnay was good, and the blossom was STRONG. Delicious, but strong. On to the food. We shared three appetizers: rangoon "ravioli," KFC (Korean fried cauliflower), and one of their special off the menu items, the pork ribs. I have never had rangoons like this before?? It's an upscale twist on the typical crab rangoon, and they served it with this mango sauce that complimented the dish beautifully. We kept going back in for more of just the sauce! The cauliflower dish was probably my favorite app. You couldn't even tell it was cauliflower, and they seasoned it so perfectly it really did taste like Korean fried chicken. And the breading they used was crispy on the outside yet chewy. I loved the texture. The pork ribs were tender and flavorful, just a bit hard to eat. The main entree I tried was the char siu chicken. Probably one of the most tender chickens I have ever eaten. Very moist and perfectly cooked. The garlic-forbidden rice did intimidate me when I saw it on the menu, but it's nothing like what I expected, in a good way! It's this dark, black rice that is seasoned with the perfect amount of garlic that compliments the chicken. The broccolini that came with the dish was also a nice balance. One of my friends got the lamb special, and it was so tender as well. And the dish was huge! My friends and I had a wonderful girl's night here, and everything was delicious. I am excited to be back to try other things on the menu!

Yelp
We have been wanting to try Akar for a while now and Akar did not disappoint! Their menu is perfectly curated for classic Asian food with an interesting twist. For the appetizers, we tried the Rangoon ravioli made of lobster meat and cream cheese with a sweet mango dip. It was excellent! We tried the special appetizer for the day, pork ribs with crispy noodles. It was a perfect balance of crunch and tender meat. For the entree, we tried the fish of the day which was a Chilean sea bass and the special for the day which was Pork belly in Adobo sauce. Both dishes were cooked to perfection! Highly recommend either or both. For the cocktails, we tried the Serai, Blossom and Shibuya. All the cocktails were really good too. They had a few dessert options as well. We chose the Affogato. It was a perfect way to end the night. We sat outdoors in the heated tent. The tents were heated very well and kept us warm throughout the night. The service was excellent! Our waiter was very attentive and ensured he explained every dish in detail to us. The chef came out at the end of the night to make sure we had a great dinning experience. This place gets booked up pretty easily for dinner so I recommend making reservations ahead of time.

Yelp
The atmosphere and the wait staff were great! The pickled cabbage was pretty amazing. The drinks were distinctive. I would visit again!

Yelp
This place is between a 4 and a 5, somewhere like a 4.6 Very intimate setting with very intricately purposeful dishes. I've been now three times and have been stunned every time by the notion to detail and flavors.

Yelp
I got a call the day before with someone saying, "we would like to confirm your reservation with a car." I didn't have a reservation for a car so I was perplex until my wife said our reservation for the restaurant name Akar. Bread with butter... It's a very small baguette. Frankly, what impressed me was not the bread but the butter. Very good butter! Escargot - not bad. But if you are ordering escargot don't order the bread... They came with it. Soft shell crab is soft shell crab. Not necessary better than Japanese restaurant but as long as the timing is good and not overcooked. It's fine. Lamb shank was delicious, doesn't taste gamey at all. The sauce was really impressive. Chilean sea bass - it's very good. Rather crispy on the skin. Sauce was good compliment as well. I have to say the only unpleasant experience was the waitress, she may be the boss for what I know. When we arrived at our reservation time, table was not available due to the previous party took longer. We have no problem with that. We waited for about 15-20 minutes and that's fine too. What bothered me was that we were told to leave before we finished. We were thinking about ordering dessert but she said they need our table for the next reservation. They will accommodate us if we want dessert, but we have to sit outside. My wife and our guests were kind of offended so we decided to leave without protesting. After all, they didn't give us the table on time and the food also took a while. Didn't seem it was our fault but we felt the waitress was not too sensitive to us being the victims of no dessert. Added salt the the wound was that I always tip generously but I forgot to adjust and gave the standard 20% tip... Now I'm bitter.

Yelp
I've been to Akar multiple times in the short months I lived in STL. I have brought visitors here, celebrated birthdays and mor, and Akar never disappoints. I love the creativity, atmosphere, philosophy, and quality of the food. The asian influence in all the dishes is so fun and delicious. I also became friends with the owner/chef and just loved the genuine hospitality here. One time they had an off night and the food wasn't what I remembered. Even that critical feedback was handled well. Everything is good and my favorite is the sea bass, lobster ravioli, and lava cake. You can't go wrong tho! Highly recommend!

Yelp
It was a small and also comfortable place in a modernist way. The soundscape was quiet Nu Jazz also known as Jazztronica or future jazz. Curtis, our wait person was kind, thoughtful, professional and unobtrusive. When he described the specials, my sister passed up the scallops with lobster sauce and went for the lamb shank and rice in Thai-style massaman curry sauce. She loved it! I equally loved the more subtly seasoned short rib with lightly steamed carrots and pea mash. The meats were tender and the sides were tasty. I had a nonalcoholic passionfruit fizz and she had a glass of wine. Full to the brim, we shared the mango tiramisu. We really wanted the bread pudding with ice cream which we were sure we would have liked more, but there was no more room in the inn. Outside seating is available for those who prefer it. So, yes, we do recommend that you gift yourself with eating here. The only thing we found unappealing was that no bread was offered except a la cart, and when we pay for bread we want delicious, well-presented bread. That's a restaurant policy for which one cannot blame the waiter especially when Curtis was five stars all the way!

Yelp
This place has my whole heart!! The servers are very knowledgeable, professional, and friendly and the interior and ambiance are impeccable. We got the cucumbers and mushrooms to start and they were both 10/10. Just enough flavor and not overdone. I had the short rib as my main dish and I still think about it regularly. Sooooo juicy and tender and the pea purée is an incredible contrast to the meat. I recommend this place to all of the foodies out there- you'll be in for a treat!!

Yelp
Have been here twice now and always blown away by the quality and service. My first time here it was in the spring and now they've added an outdoor heated tent. There's only about 12 seats inside but plenty of outdoor space and the outdoor heated tent is pretty comfy that you can take your jacket off. Everything on the menu is great, my particular favorites are the Rangoon ravioli, sweet potato gnocchi, and Japanese eggplant. I've also tried the mapo tofu, kfc, and udon kicks and are great options especially for vegetarians. The Rangoon ravioli has a ton of flavors and comes paired with this mango sauce. It doesn't just taste like you're eating a fried thing. I'm particularly impressed by the sweet potato gnocchi which tastes more like a curry than a pasta since it has a Malaysian curry on top. The chickpeas that come with it come out super crispy and don't get soggy with the sauce. The best part is the minced mushrooms on top.
