The 20 Best Meals Under $20 In NYC - New York - The Infatuation

"The chef/owner of Akara House used to work at McDonald’s, and usually that wouldn’t be a significant fact, but at this counter-service Nigerian spot in Crown Heights, it explains a lot. Their akara sandwich is a Big Mac-like creation involving cheese, mayo, pickles, and a thick fritter with a crackly crust and a custardy interior that’s nothing like a sad excuse for meat. Pair it with a side of suya seasoned plantains, and snag one of the tiny outdoor tables if the weather's nice. Classic Akara Burger, $10.50 and Suya Seasoned Plantains, $6.30" - will hartman, willa moore, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah, bryan kim

The 16 Best Vegan Restaurants In NYC

"When someone who has worked at McDonald’s decides to make a vegan Nigerian answer to the Big Mac, you pay attention. That’s what happened at Akara House, a counter-service spot in Crown Heights that puts akara on a squishy bun with vegan cheese, mayo, and pickles. The thick bean fritter is not like all those other dry, crumby, easy-to-choke-on veggie burgers—instead, it’s got an ultra-soft center and a crispy, crackly exterior that doesn’t get soggy, no matter how far you bring your sandwich to eat it. (We’d recommend Brower Park.)" - neha talreja, bryan kim, kenny yang, willa moore

Akara House - Review - Crown Heights - New York - The Infatuation

"The chef/owner of Akara House used to work at McDonald’s, and usually that wouldn’t be a significant fact, but at this counter-service Nigerian spot in Crown Heights, it explains a lot. Their akara sandwich, the specialty here, is a Big Mac-esque creation involving a thick fritter, vegan cheese, mayo and pickles. Instead of being a sad excuse for meat, it’s a tasty bean-based innovation, with an ultra-soft center and a crackly exterior. The sandwiches are made in a small kitchen that might resemble the one in your own apartment, complete with a regular old oven, and littered with industrial grade pots full of jollof rice. Round out your order with rice, and some moi moi, and then head to Brower Park. The akara on your saucy sandwich will still be perfectly crisp. photo credit: Willa Moore" - Willa Moore

Fantastic Fast Food, West African Style, in Brooklyn | The New Yorker

"What exactly is Funso Akinya doing back there, in the kitchen at Akara House (642 Nostrand Ave.; $5-$16), his tiny takeout counter in Crown Heights? The first time I tried his food, I looked up from my cardboard container in stunned silence. None of the short, straightforward menu descriptions, hand-painted on the wall—“bean based burger,” “yam porridge (& beans)”—came close to conveying the culinary wizardry at play, though a passerby nailed it: “They got the good food in there!” he shouted through the open door." - Hannah Goldfield

I’ve lived in the neighborhood for 6+ years, tried many places and I would have to say this is now in my top 3. Three words to describe Akara House: Fresh. Innovative. Incredible. It’s a breath of fresh air. Amazing flavors and textures combine to create a one of a kind burger. The owner was so kind, so helpful, very professional and humble. I will be returning more than once. God bless this business! Also I don’t have a photo because I ate it so fast 😂 BUT it looked better than or just like the photo. I tried the LEKKI BURGER 🤤🤤🤤10/10

Akara House is a solid choice for quick bites. The Made in Lagos burger was a highlight, and the Jollof rice with fritters and the Kale salad were tasty. The staff were friendly, and the owner even shared egusi samples for us to try. Although the place is a bit small and got cramped when we were there, the fast service rounded out an overall good experience. I'd love to go again soon and have their classic Akara burger.

Google
I am surprised by all the very high ratings. I was not exactly blown away by this place. I ordered the Made in Lagos burger and the homemade lemonade. The lemonade was refreshing and a bit different in am undescribable way. Sweet but a little salty, felt very refreshing on a warm day. The Made in Lagos burger was a little bit of a letdown. The toppings were excellent and flavorful, but the akara patty was so dry and dense, it really subtracted from the overall burger experience. There are 2 benches to wait for your food and a small bar countertop with a few chairs if you want to stay and eat.

Love to see people looking to create a spin on Authentic cuisine like this spot Akara is doing with Nigerian food. The sandwich & sauce to complement was phenomenal here alongside the homemade lemonade.

I went there for the first time with some friends a few days ago and it was so delicious! Great place for vegan food. I got the fritters plate and it was delicious. There isn’t a ton of seating inside but we sat outside and it was nice. The staff are all very warm and friendly. Would highly recommend!

Google
Owner was dope. Don't expect the food to come quick, which a plus for me bc it let's me know it's being cooked from scratch. The food was good, even the next day eating it cold. Only thing I wasn't crazy about was the jollof, guess I expected something different from all the jollof rave videos I had been watching.

I live around the corner and was so happy when this Crown Heights staple relocated closer to me. The owner is a treasure and full of enthusiasm for his creations that are delicious. The sidewalk table atmosphere is great urban experience of the vitality of crown heights renaissance. I’m a fan of the Abuja Burger named after the beautiful capital of Nigeria.

Google
Was excited to try! I ordered the Victorian Island Burger without vegan cheese and yucca fries. Upon first bite, all I could taste was very sour mustard and was instantly turned off 🤮. The mustard and mayo were the stars on this bean-based patty, I would’ve preferred the opposite. Although the bean-patty tasted a bit like bread. The $9 yucca fries were thick and overly dry. 😒 We left very hungry still and ended up eating Halal food down the block. I won’t try it again.

Yelp
Great wonderful food Clean food if you are trying to stay away from meat or dairy but still want a great meal Wonderful service from the owner, very friendly and cozy environment as a local business Definitely would recommend to the neighbor Get desert from Island Pop up the same sidewalk after your meal

Yelp
Very tasty special croquette sandwich, I have to say, instead of plant base hamburger. I love it. Beaitifullly, meticulously made with love of food and pride. I read a burger article of NYT on Sep 11, 2024 and this burger, named "vegetarian burger" was one of them and I always wanted to try what "vegetarian burger" means. I was curious how "the hamburger" tastes similar to meat regular burger. Wrong! It is not a imitated meat. It is a totally diffeent concept. It is a croquette sandwich! They make this croquette from special Nigerian beans and eat with fresh veggies(tomato, lettuce, pickles) plus mayo and cheese on bread. Tasted super good and crunchy and actually gave me a lot of energy. I worked out so well, more than usual. Good carbohydrates. The owner, Funso, has visions and love for food. His food shows that. A problem is that this small shop is so hard to go in the remote area for some neighborhood and has a space for a minimum function of selling with a eating stand like fast food. With this wondeful vision and good food, in even a small space, if they can create a special space that people come even from far to enjoy time with their food, it will be great. But this burger is mainly only for people to take out or deliver in the neighborhood. I cannot find a reason to travel far because the shop itself doesn't have the enjoyment element other than the food (zero enjoying the dining function) . Even some of playa bowls chain shops have cute setting and seating area so that we can travel and have good time with the good acai bowl. I do hope mote people can enjoy this yummy sandwich. I suggested a truck operation. Let's see how they will develope their operation.

Yelp
Went to this spot after seeing it buzzing on social media and I had to try it because this place had a few things going for them that included being black owned, local and I'm trying to explore my palate whilst laying off the meat. I went there on the best day too JUNETEENTH and much to my surprise the shop was running a special offer BOGO of their signature Akara Burger! The store is small and it is probably best to buy your food to go but, there is a small eating area outside if you wanted to chill. Met the owner who was working that day and he told me his amazing origin story of how the burger was made and how much of an awesome cook his mother was. This food is very much a part of his childhood that he made his own for the people of Bk to enjoy. Go here!!!

Yelp
Akara House is IT. Trust me, I'm Nigerian. I decided to stop in on Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon after coming across Akara House via the Righteous Eats YT channel the day before. For those unfamiliar with akara, it's a popular Nigerian street food made from ground black-eyed peas, onions, and spices, deep-fried into fritters. When considering vegetarian burgers, our minds often gravitate towards black beans, mushrooms, or alternative meat substitutes. Owner Funso Akinya (who was chatty and friendly) had the idea to use akara as a patty in a vegetarian burger -- a creative fusion, if you ask me. I didn't know what to expect. I have had tons of akara but never on a bun with creamy mayo, crisp lettuce, juicy tomato, cheese, and cucumbers. It slaps! All of the additions complemented the flavorful akara patty well. I'm a fan. Can't have a burger without fries so I also ordered suya-dusted fries. A spicy kick that wasn't overwhelming but felt. I also got moi moi (made from Nigerian honey beans), and again, flavor punch. I wanna note that the moi moi was wrapped in a banana leaf. An authentic detail I loved. It's pretty cool to witness the erection of several Nigerian restaurants around Brooklyn. I believe Akara House is the only plant based one so all my vegan and vegetarian heads, this place is for you. Lemme tell you, as a carnivore, I will definitely return.

Yelp
A love letter to American fast food, through a distinctly and thoughtfully Nigerian lens. Forgot to take a picture of my first visit because I wolfed down the veggie burger so quickly. Second visit was just as revelatory. I kept getting this vegetal freshness - almost like a cilantro or aji verde - but couldn't place it. It was a ballet of hot, crispy, sour, umami, crunch, vegetables, carbs. Amazing. A good veggie burger is hard. A new one made from something that isn't soy or imitation meat, a traditional Nigerian dish (akara) but deep fried and presented as a new dish? Something special. This is my new favorite lunch on Nostrand. If you haven't tried it - go. It's something special.

Yelp
First time trying an akara fritter & it was absolutely delicious! I got the "Made in Lagos" sandwich and the flavors meshed so well together. I'm always looking for new vegetarian dishes to try and this was definitely a winner. The fries are also so crispy and fried to perfection. The owner was really nice and they are accommodating if you want to make any changes to the sandwich. Definitely worth a try!

Yelp
Let it be said here first, that Akara House is serving what I now consider to be the number one veggie burger in New York City! Akara is a Nigerian black-eyed pea fritter (also shared with a few other West African and Caribbean cuisines) that here has been transformed into the centerpiece of a magnificent veggie burger. If you have ever enjoyed an Indian vada pav, the akara serves as a marvelous substitute for the potato patty with a natural breadiness that is satisfying to bite into without the flavor notes of meat substitutes that make some of us vegetarians uncomfortable. The entire affair is served in a bun with cheese and absolutely must be paired with the not-too-spicy red sauce that is made from ginger, garlic, and a few other secret house ingredients. Seating is limited but available.

Yelp
Akara House is fantastic! The burgers and side items (ordered Jollof Rice, and fried yuca) are insanely delicious, made to order, and guaranteed to have you planning your next visit - and, don't forget to add the pepper sauce! The owner greets you with a friendly and welcoming smile, and the restaurant is immaculate and cozy. If you're in the neighborhood, Akara House is a must!

Yelp
Delicious honey bean fritters as jollof rice. Went with three adults and two kids and everyone found something to enjoy. People taking orders were pleasant and helpful. Minimal seating but the weather was just good enough to park ourselves at one of the three tables just outside. Waking distance from the Brooklyn Children's museum. Would visit again!

Yelp
Delicious food! Had the Akara burger and suya seasoned fries, will be coming here on a weekly basis now :) very kind owner, was very helpful & chill vibes. The red sauce is a must, I would buy it if he sold it!!!

Yelp
I ordered the double akara burger for takeout on a weekday afternoon. I'm glad I went for the double, since each burger is on the small side. (Like a big slider.) The burgers were tasty - they came with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, mayo, and pickled cucumbers. The red sauce/pickled vegetables on the side was great as well. I do wish the akara patty itself had a little more flavor. With everything else on the burger it was really good, but I don't think patty alone would have done much for me. Looking forward to coming back to try some sides!

Yelp
Decided to stop here with my mini me for a vegan lunch, and was absolutely surprised. The owner is there talking to patrons, which makes it very inviting. The spot is quaint but packs a flavor punch. There were no complaints as we will be back. The food never made it home. We ate it in the car..okay...good food!!!!

Yelp
My Joloff rice with chicken bowl and plantains was my first Nigerian meal ever . The food is packed with seasonings and spices . I mean packed ! The chicken was also super spicy . The meal came with some greens and they surely could've used a dressing that balanced out some of the spiciness which I didn't see. The couple plantains I added were super necessary to any meal and I added my own slice of avocado at home like a typical Californian . The best part of the meal was the joloff rice itself. I could eat the rice all day. My overall meal was good and I give it its respect but it's not something I can be a fan of. The spicy ness and over seasoning is just too much to deal with .

Yelp
I had no idea that beans could be coaxed into a tamale-ish-or-esque magic called moi-moi. What a treat. Combined with rice that's delightfully delicious. Each grain has a weight of sustenance to it. Excited to try other items on the menu.

Yelp
Stop 2 of a 5 stop culinary tour of the Crown Heights neighborhood was Akara House. I had seen it on Yelp and knew it would be just right. The owner was extremely nice and helped us make our selections. I knew that I wanted the Akara (bean fritters) and I also chose Akara House because they also had Suya beef. Two Nigerian classic dishes under one roof. We also got glasses of his homemade lemonade. Perfect flavor with a hint of bitterness coming from the actual citrus fruit. First thing that came out was the Suya beef with Jollof rice. The beef is marinated in a sauce that includes peanuts and was very tender and flavorful. The jollof rice had wonderful texture and nice flavor as well. The highlight was the Akara, the owner indicated that he'd been perfecting them for two years. We could taste the pride. We ate them at optimal temperature because we enjoyed sitting in the two available seats at the front of the restaurant. They were perfect fritters, somehow being both light and substantial at the same time. The whole meal also went great with the freshly made hot sauce. All of it went well with a great conversation about Nigerian politics, fiction, and his experience in the Crown Heights neighborhood. Certainly wishing him the best because this is the type of business we need more of!

Yelp
Their akara sandwich is dope!! Made to order, served on fresh bread with tangy homemade sauce - super delicious! It packs a lot of favor! Also got a fresh-squeezed lemonade, very refreshing. I'll be back for more!

Hungry H.

Yelp
The burger was decent. Greasy but decent. The true problem with this place is the rude & condescending girl who works the counter. I'm shocked there aren't more people commenting on this. I know it wasn't just me. Everything in this city is expensive these days. I refuse to spend money in places where my business isn't appreciated. Skip it.

Noah K.

Yelp
Can't overstate how delicious this was. I know it's gotten a lot of hype, but easily the best vegan sandwich I've ever had. I will 100% be back. The staff was incredibly friendly too!

Jason S.

Yelp
Had incredible Nigerian food on Nostrand with Fela Kuti blasting on the speakers. Perfect experience and incredible food. Will definitely be returning and encouraging my local friends to check out Akara House as well!

Yelp
Delicious food, friendly owner. Good vibes all around. Didn't take a pic because I devoured it too quickly. I got the chicken over rice.

Jada P.

Yelp
soooo good! i got the Classic Akara Sandwhich with fries, next time will try others but a great first impression

Yelp
I've read about jollof rice in novels and was so hyped to try the dish irl! I ordered the steak and rice combo to go and it was positively divine. Great flavor and the meat was deeply marinated in sauce oh my gawd. I need to move back to nyc and get more of this goodness in my life. Delicious!

Britta F.

Yelp
excellent little spot for lunch. the wrap and burger were delicious and the staff was so sweet! we loved the spicy sauce we got on the side. can't wait to come back & explore more of the menu

Yelp
Never had akara before but the sandwich was delicious. Always nice to see something totally new in the neighbourhood, great delicious alternative to falafel.

Samantha B.

Yelp
The Akara sandwich is delicious, the jollof rice is excellent and the owners are friendly, chatty and approachable. It's also an affordable meal. Can highly recommend the pink lemonade - made from fresh lemons and limes and not overly sweet. I'll definitely be back.

Aj B.

Yelp
food was literally SO good, service was quick and the owner was really sweet. definitely coming here as a regular

Cheyenne D.

Yelp
this is no joke hidden nigerian gem in the heart of brooklyn. the sandwich is to die for.get two because the price is NOT pricey. all sandwiches and rice dishes are boomin' but the akara sandwich is AMAZING. i'm vegan so I get the sandwich with no mayo no cheese, just bun, patty, and pickle with this special Nigerian red hot sauce is ALL YOU NEED IN LIFE. LETS GO. and the lemonade is very refreshing. to top it off, the owner is so sweet and reminds me why I love to shop black owned food businesses.

Arjun S.

Yelp
This place is soooo goood and unique! The patties were really yummy and I've never had anything like the strawberry bread on the sandwhich. I'll definitely be back (especially for the homemade sauce)!

Randall S.

Yelp
The Akara sandwich with sauce is delicious and special. Very fresh, good flavors. Homemade lemonade is also special, with a touch of bitterness that is very refreshing. A great and unique addition to Nostrand Avenue.
