"Chef David Thompson’s latest venture takes his obsession with heritage Thai recipes of the 1900s to a new level. At Aksorn (meaning “alphabet”), he draws recipes from funeral books (printed to commemorate the deceased, detailing their lives and favorite dishes), with a particular focus on books memorializing well-known society ladies of the 1940s to 1970s. The restaurant seeks to capture a historical moment when Thai society — and its food — underwent a series of seismic shifts, as quality food spread from the kitchens of wealthy families to the masses. The setting is right on theme, on the top floor of the original Central Department Store, which opened in 1950 and has since become a mixed-use behemoth." - Chawadee Nualkhair, Austin Bush, Sirin Wongpanit

Forced to order the tasting menu, we didn’t experience any particular emotions. After the appetizers, the table was filled with many courses, none of which were unforgettable. The wine pairing should be avoided; not only was it expensive, but it also didn’t complement the dishes, which were so spicy they numbed the palate. For €110 per person, drinks excluded, I expected better.

We were lucky that the cooler winter weather meant we could dine in comfort on the pretty rooftop terrace. Service was polite, attentive and friendly and I couldn’t fault the delicious meal we enjoyed, in particular a southern fish curry with accompanying relish, quite unlike anything I’ve tried before. I’ll be back!

!!SCAM!! To all self-respecting foodies who follow the michelin guide, this restaurant its 100% underserving of its 1 star. For the amount paid per pax, one can have a much more authentic and flavourful meal at any local street food stall for one-tenth the price. Apart from the sub-par food, the service was average at best. !!Will not patronise again!!

Quite disappointing experience overall. No way this restaurant is at 1 star Michelin level, the inspector must have drinken something good to award that rating. Food is okish but not remotely worth the price tag of 3400 for the tasting menu. More like street food joint than a top rated restaurant. Service was kind but very basic, the plate description was mechanic and often hard to understand tbh. The most disappointing part of the experience is the atmosphere. The restaurant is on the 5th floor of a quite old building in desperate need of a renovation, the lobby entrance is a mess and the bathroom run down 2 floor under the restaurant and very dark. The small dining room is built around an open kitchen and feels crowded with the staff often standing closer than you wished to the table, the whole open kitchen is messy and confusing rather than engaging and entertaining. Bottom line this would have probably been a solid 3.5 stars if it was a lower priced family run neighbourhood restaurant with some decent street food option and a couple of very tasty highlights like grouper or the burnt coconut desserts among several others more forgettable ones, but as far as Michelin starred restaurants go it falls well short of expectations.

Had dinner at Aksorn in Bangkok, and it's safe to say it lives up to its Michelin star. The place runs on a fixed menu for about $150, which might sound steep, but it's worth every penny. What's really interesting is the Australian chef behind the traditional Thai menu, bringing a fresh take on classics. From starters right through to desserts, everything was spot on. The highlight for me was the steamed rice in the main course – the aroma alone was enough to make me overindulge. Ended up with a bit of a food coma and needed a coffee break to recover! The curry deserves a mention too; it was fantastic without being too spicy. They tailor the spiciness to each diner, so you get to enjoy the flavors and a slight kick. I'm already planning to come back here whenever I want to introduce friends to authentic Thai cuisine. As for the atmosphere, it's exactly what you'd expect from a Michelin-starred restaurant – impeccable service. Opting for the terrace seating was a great choice, with the cooler evening air and a bit of a breeze making for a perfect setting. Overall, it's a solid 5-star experience.

Fabulous dinner last night at Aksorn. The flavors of the food were bold and bright. The service was charming and efficient. Aksorn is a must for anyone visiting Bangkok - or for those, like me - who call Bangkok home. Bravo Chef David and team! 👏👏

I am ending a 3 week tour of SE Asia in Bangkok and have eaten at excellent restaurants in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos with wonderful local cuisine. This restaurant has excellent service. Food was served promptly. Wine pairings very good for dishes. I had the set menu. Fried pork with pickled garlic and the Curry Coral Grouper with steamed rice were excellent. Remaining dishes were either forgettable or just not to my taste. I did not consider this particularly expensive in my travels of SE Asia, but would not return based on the menu I had tonight. I enjoy the challenges of a set menu that allow the Chef to show off their creativity, but this meal reminded me of some of the underwhelming food I had in Beijing and Shanghai China… just not to my taste.
