The Best Tacos and Taquerias in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Javier León’s 18th Street restaurant may be little, but it is mighty. The chef has created one of San Francisco’s favorite Baja-style fish tacos. There’s birria pizza on the menu — no small feat — but the tacos are what keep customers lining up around the block. The pastor negro taco, arriving after marinating in chiles, is worth an order, too." - Paolo Bicchieri

Al Carajo Review - Mission - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Tiny counter-service Al Carajo in the Mission is pumping out Yucatecan plates that get the job done—as long as you order right. The tacos de pastor negro are tangy and the juicy chicken tinga quesadillas work great with the spicy red salsa. On the other hand, the seafood dishes like the octopus panuchos, the ceviche yucateco, and the aguachile leave a lot to be desired. Each of these dishes feel like they have their flavors turned down a few notches. Still, this place works in a pinch for a casual lunch or dinner, but just keep in mind that there are only two high tops inside and a small (but heated) patio outside. " - Ricky Rodriguez

One of the best breakfast burritos I've had the agua fresca was soooo good too. Owner super friendly and if I'm ever in the area I'll grab me more food! The torta was amazing too I had a bite of that.

Google
One of the best breakfast burritos in the city, with hashbrowns, avocado, cheese, eggs, and what I think was birria meat (delicious). Comes with sriracha mayo on the side. Burrito was reasonably priced (for SF) at ~$15. Half a burrito is what I would consider one serving, although YMMV. Food came out quickly, in <10 minutes. Counter service with a few limited tables available for outdoor seating. If you order to eat there, they'll bring the food to you when it's ready, and clear the table when you leave.

Google
Came here for food after doing the nearby Holey Moley! Good: - The birria pizza was super unique and was huge - great portion sizes - The al pastor taco was really good - great ingredients, just a little small - Good prices, won't break the bank - Nice staff here! They were patient with us Bad: - The birria pizza also gave me a stomachache - it felt like it was soaked in oil - The seating availability is low, we grabbed one of the last indoor seats - it's a bit messy inside too, not very clean Overall wouldn't come again, was an easy option but didn't feel like my stomach liked the food.

Google
really happy to have found octopus tacos in the city, had a tender cook and spicy kick! the fish tacos were also perfect, chicken tinga moist but a but texture a bit soggy. high-ish prices is the only downside.

Best yucatecan/ Mayan stile I’ve tried in the US, I was born and raised in Yucatán and I tell you guys you need to come and try this place. The huevos motuleños are perfect 👌 The chilaquiles very homestyle. The panucho took me home. Even the agua fresca was good. I’m thankful for places like this, come try!

Google
The breakfast burrito is FIRE!! The hashbrowns are super crispy and the chorizo is delicious. I think it may be my favorite in the city so far. Will definitely be back to try more!

Google
Nice staff, clean place. Breakfast burrito comes out to $15.21. The size is respectable, taste Is generally solid, although all the flavour comes from the salsa. Seems to be missing that wow factor, that other nearby breakfast burrito spots can offer. All in all solid, but better options exist in The Mission

Michael Vallejos

Google
As the saying goes. Vete al carajo! My only regret is not going Al Carajo sooner. Breakfast burrito is a perfect size & packed with flavor. Also has the torts de chilaquiles…also banging

Yelp
Run to get the torta de chilaquiles!! Actually everything is so good! Javier has put a lot of dedication and love not only into the service but also into the place in general, it's so cozy and welcoming! I'll be getting another torta de chilaquiles soon for sure.

Yelp
There is a new contender for my favorite Mexican restaurant in San Francisco! Al Carajo is a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant in the Mission District that features some incredible dishes from Mexico's Yucatán peninsula. Chef Javier has spent his life around food and brings his unique twist to the classic favors you'd typically find in this cuisine. Their breakfast burritos have been going viral and I got to admit, it lived up to the hype! The chorizo was perfectly seasoned and was complimented by the scrambled eggs, avocado, mixed cheeses. Drizzle a little sriracha mayo on top and you're set! The Cochinita tacos were small but had huge flavor with the marinated, slow cooked pork. The chilaquiles was one of the best I've ever had in San Francisco. Sometimes they can be a little too spicy (for my taste) but not this one. It was perfectly balanced with chicken tinga, sour cream, and fresh cotija cheese. If you really want something different, you've got to try the 'Quesito Rico'. Imagine a flour tortilla with a layer of melted cheese, covered with a combo of tiger shrimp and chorizo, potatoes, and onions. It was hearty and delicious. Wash everything down with some fresh ague fresca and you've got a perfect meal. There are a number of other dishes that I wish I had tried that will simply have to wait until my next visit, which will probably be much sooner than later. The service is also great!

Yelp
Came here with a friend after a few meetings in the morning! The place is kind of a hole in the wall. There wasn't any wait when I arrived at the location which was nice. Service here was great. The person who took our order brought utensils for us when bringing us our food and came by to take our trays away which I thought was very nice. Please note seating is limited to a few indoor and outdoor options. Breakfast burrito 8.75/10 Man this burrito hit different. The combination of silky eggs, hash brown, chorizo, and avocado was excellent. Both my friend and I really enjoyed this and were thoroughly impressed! Would highly recommend giving this a try. Fish Tacos 6/10 The fish tacos were good but my friend and I weren't blown away. The fish had a good crunch and I liked the batter they used, but I felt like they used too much sriracha mayo on the tacos. For $14 for 2 tacos, we felt the burrito was a better value for roughly the same price. Def need to try some of their other options if I'm around the area. Solid hole in the wall type of place!

Yelp
Found this taco place on the "Best Tacos in Bay Area" San Francisco Chronicle article. Glad we tried it! I didn't realize they specialized in Yucatan Mexican cuisine - interesting. My husband, daughter and I shared the Fish taco, Pastor Negro taco, chicken tinga taco, and the Vegetable Quesadilla. All of the tacos were wonderful!!! They each came with two. The fish one came out very hot and fresh, and was nice and flaky. The Pastor Negro (charred pork) was nicely charred, but not too crispy. The chicken tinga taco was probably the least exciting, but still good. The vegetable quesadilla was something my husband enjoyed, but something we'll skip next time - nothing exciting here either - super greasy and rich, although the veggies were good. We could have ordered another order of tacos to share, but we also ended up being okay with what we had too. Service was really quick, thankfully; I'm so happy our food came out right away! You may have to ask for the complimentary chips. The salsas that came with them were delicious too! Bathroom was clean, which I also appreciated. I wish they did have a high chair though for our little one, but regardless, we will still return!! Awesome tacos.

Yelp
Heard the breakfast burritos here were pretty good- so I had to try for myself. Definitely wasn't a disappointment- small place with some outside seating mostly, cheap and cheerful service inside. Didn't have to wait too long for the burrito to arrive. It was great- juicy flavors from the chorizo and the melted cheese, with the addition of nicely cooked potatoes and eggs, all blended perfectly together for a taste bomb in each bite. It was gone too soon once eaten- but never forgotten. A good classic breakfast burrito
google avatar

Yelp
I love the cochinita tacos, I've come back many many times for them. The staff is super sweet and great service. Smaller location with outdoor seating right off mission street.
google avatar

Yelp
Hole in the wall lunch spot in the mission. The menu is different from your standard Mexican taqueria. Tried the torta chilaquiles and I was not disappointed. Very flavorful, loved the different textures. Definitely want to try more items!

Yelp
Stopped by the Mission area since I was craving Mexican food. I've had this place bookmarked and have always wanted to try it! I went on a Saturday around noon and the inside seating was full when I arrived, but there was some seating outside. You order at the counter and they'll bring you your food. Valencia fish tacos - hot, crispy fish with the perfect balance of sauce and toppings. I finished this so fast. Wish the portion was a bit bigger for the price. Maya Burrito - Different than a mission style burrito (no rice) but still filling without leaving you stuffed. I enjoyed the lettuce wrapped inside the tortilla, making it more like a wrap. The pork was flavorful and juicy. It came with two sauces and some chips as well. Service was fast and friendly!
google avatar

Vy T.

Yelp
The best breakfast burrito ever, made fresh to order. They grilled the outside of the burrito. So crispy and flavorful. Strongly recommend. I will come back for the tacos.
google avatar

Janus C.

Yelp
The fish tacos! Fast service. The fish was breaded really nicely and crunchy and the slaw on top was nice as well. Wanna come back for that breakfast burrito!
google avatar

Ria B.

Yelp
It's a small, cute shop when you walk in. Not too much inside except for the counter and a few chairs but there is a little more seating outside. The service was not too fast not too slow. It was the type of restaurant you order at the counter then grab ur food, then take a seat. I ordered the chicken tinga tacos. The spice was on point but the chicken itself I felt like did not have much depth in the flavor. The green salsa that was served with it was really good and pretty spicy so that elevated the dish. The Ube tortilla was cool but didn't taste it, it just looked nice for the color. Finally at $13 it's a little expensive for what you are getting. Still delicious just wished it was cheaper.

Yelp
Current favorite breakfast burrito in the city. I am a huge fan of breakfast burritos and love finding spots all over the city! Just the right amount of ingredients which gave it the best flavors. Not heavy but hit the spot. Great service and quick+easy location.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice lil hole in the wall taco place. Got the breakfast burrito which was well flavored and seasoned. The eggs were fluffy and well cooked and the taste on the chorizo paired well with everything. Unfortunately this is closer to a 4.25 star burrito. The tortilla was too big so what you got was a lot of scrunched up tortilla in the middle which you can see in the picture. Too much tortilla vs filling (e.g avocado, potato and chorizo). Expensive and not quite worth the price.
google avatar

Angelina Z.

Yelp
Simple yet flavorful burritos here. Super juicy too! There isn't a lot of indoor seating, as a heads up. Id definitely want to come back to try the tacos!
google avatar

Yelp
Wait Time: No wait for Saturday Breakfast, food arrived 10 minute after placing order. Unique Factor: 3/5 - A menu curated with the best bites of many food concepts, but Mexican Americanized, appears to be the vibe. We shared a breakfast burrito as part of our two part/location breakfast. The tortilla was slighted toasted (very important), eggs were silky, chorizo & tots were crispy, and the siracha mayo was just enough to add some creaminess but not send us into a food coma. We will need to be back to try the menu. Service: Mostly takeout with a few bistro tables set along the sidewalk. Friendly Staff.

Yelp
Absolutely blown away by this place. 10 stars if I could! When we were there, I saw a customer take his first bite into his sandwich and he nodded so enthusiastically, that was when I knew everything must've been delicious here. The birria pizza is to die for. It's a bunch of birria quesadilla placed in a round shape like a pizza. They give the dipping sauce as well as 2 other small sauces to complement. My boyfriend and I are obsessed with this and I highly recommend ordering this. The fish tacos are also phenomenal. The fish in the taco is big and the breading is very crunchy. These two were so delicious. We've ordered the birria pizza again since and it was the best thing ever. Service is also good. The cashier offered to pull two of their small tables together so that we had more space for our items and for us to eat. That was really sweet and we will definitely be back! I highly recommend this place to everyone.

Yelp
I went here for lunch with my coworkers on a random Wednesday. There were indoor and outdoor seating options. The service was friendly and the food came out quickly. You order at the counter and a server will bring out your food. I got the breakfast burrito and it was delicious! The burrito itself was packed full and the chorizo inside wasn't super oily. The orange sauce that came with the burrito was amazing!! I wanted to take the other half of my burrito home and the server gave me a new piece of foil to wrap my burrito in. Overall, I think this place is a good option if you want a casual, quick-bite to eat. The sauce is stand-out and I would come back to try their other menu items!
google avatar

Yelp
I had a rare Sunday afternoon off, and I wanted to try a new taco place. What a gem. Everything is delicious. We are ruined forever finding better Fish tacos, and the service and staff is amazing. This is our new go to for tacos.
google avatar

Tim Y.

Yelp
I highly recommend this place! The fish tacos and ceviche were excellent. I could taste the high-quality ingredients. The tacos had the perfect ratios for wrapping and eating (not messy to eat). Be prepared to eat this to go, on your feet, or at a small table or parklet. The customer service was also good. Everyone was helpful.
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
I went here with my friend and it was so delicious. This place exceeded our expectations. We ordered the birria pizza and it came with the dipping consume along with green and orange salsas on the side. The taste of the birria was so good very soft meat cut up just right. Also, I am not a fan of raw onions but they lightly put small pieces of onion on top of the pizza along with small radish slices. Everything was delicious. We will definitely return soon. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Hector L.

Yelp
This place must be relatively new because ride-sharing wouldn't even recognize it as a location. Really great unassuming small spot in the Mission near Alamo Drafthouse. Food was very tasty and the guys working were friendly and helpful. Would recommend
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Gotta agree with the ratings - killer breakfast burrito! Flavorful chorizo with ample egg, cheese, tots, avocado, and a punchy sriracha Mayo made for a solid bite. Honestly the price point is a little high but I guess it's somewhat standard for the city and breakfast burritos in general these days. Super easy to order ahead and grab and go if you're not looking to stick around the Mission!
google avatar

Brent F.

Yelp
Been exploring breakfast burritos and sandwiches lately and came across reviews saying this was the best in the city. Gave this a try and it was great, definitely one of the best in the city. The sauce they give on the side is really good so probably worth getting extra.
google avatar

Lian T.

Yelp
Came here 2x in one week. First visit got the birria pizza. Outstanding. Second visit got the breakfast burrito. Chefs kiss. Friendly service and nice little parklet. The chilaquiles torta was good but I wish I'd just gotten the chilaquiles since torta bread is not my fave. NA michelada was a tasty option!
google avatar

Dylan L.

Yelp
This Mexican restaurant is really great! Here we have some really fun and inventive dishes like a birria pizza and a chilaquiles torta. Both of these dishes I tried and the birria pizza was my favorite. I love how there is space to sit down and have brunch- the service is great even though there isn't a sever- so you will be saving a bit of money coming here.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
Wow! The flavors bring me back to my trip to the Yucatan. It's a bit on the pricey side for the size but don't let it stop you! The owner said he has changed some flavors tho to adjust to the demographics of his customers. I loved the pastor negro, and all the sauces are delicious. I'd come back for the crunchy cheese on the quesito rico & the potatoes on it :) The owner also welcomed us! He warmly wiped down the tables and got us water--great service. The place isn't big but the food is a must try.
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
Al Carajo is definitely a new favorite of mine. The fish tacos were delicious, fresh, and accompanied by a tasty homemade ube masa tortilla. The two tacos the order came with were the perfect amount to make me feel full. The owner was super attentive and gave me guidance on the menu, saying the fish tacos are better eaten in the restaurant. The interior was simple and clean. Minimal seating (a couple tables inside and 3 outside) and a lovely mural on the wall. I'll be back at Al Carajo for sure!
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
Don't normally like Mexican food but this place is a solid 5 out of 5. My favorite were ceviche and chicken tinga quesadilla. They put a lot of thoughts to their food! Will definitely come back again and try the fish tacos.

Samuel B.

Yelp
This is the BEST breakfast burrito in San Francisco. I drive all around the city in an ambulance and try them all x8 years. No lie probably 400+ ordered from all over. It's my thing. Here the proportions are perfect. No large chunks of potato messing it up. Rich Mexican flavors. Not like an American breakfast "Wrap". If that is the style you prefer you should go to Il Canto in the Fidi, they have the best in that sub-category. Breakfast little is fine too but small portions. Most importantly they cook the chorizo well done here. Most of the fat is drained off. This means it's not too greasy, and you lose nothing in texture. The owner tells me he "imports" it from LA because he couldn't find a chorizo locally that met his needs. The orange salsa is a top tier compliment to the other flavors. 10/10 would bang again.
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
Always love a food truck success story! I was looking for birria spots in SF and stumbled across Al Carajo. They have "birria pizza" on the menu, which is essentially a birria taco turned into a giant quesadilla. Gooey, melted cheese topped with tender beef, with onion and radish to cut the grease, and of course, consommé. It also comes with two sauces - a green salsa and a spicy mayo condiment. This thing was DECADENT and could be shared between 2-3 people. There are a couple small tables inside, in addition to a parklet. The owner was so kind and inviting and informed us that they will be getting a liquor license soon :) I'll be back to try the more traditional Yucatan dishes!

Yelp
WOW !!!! Came in this morning. Was greeted nicely and got to having some good authentic conversation with Chef Javier León and his passion for the food he creates and he way beyond kind. The chef that made our burritos looked like he was so happy to be there and it was very homely. We got two breakfast burritos and they did not disappoint the crispy chorizo(that was not at all greasy) I don't even know how they did this , perfectly crispy hash brown, avocado and the spicy aioli and overall the cheese pull with each bite made my entire morning the burrito was warm the entire time I was eating . They gave us some salsa have never had and it was so delicious perfectly spicy yet had flavor. We also got Agua Fresca which complemented the food wasn't too sweet and had so kick authentic flavor. And the price cost less than it needed to be because that is a 5 star burrito. Everything in the menu is affordable and good portions! Don't mind the pictures I couldn't stop eating ! The restaurant itself is exactly like it should be it's small and intimate which gives you a classic welcome we care about you feel . The parking is tight like all parking in San Fran so no surprise here obviously this isn't a factor because it's out of the community control . We have been searching for a good Mexican restaurant and this is by far the #1 in San Francisco. I will come back maybe even tonight . Thank you so much!

Yelp
Absolute GEM in SF!! Many people know them for their unique birria pizza, but all the items on their menu are absolute stand outs and I'd order them all again. Their birria pizza was the perfect size and generously stuffed with meat and cheesy goodness. It is so filling and the consommé with the birria is the literal definition of the perfect bite. For me, my absolute favorite items were the valencia fish tacos and the breakfast burrito. I am a huge fish taco girl and I can tell if a place is good based on their fish taco. Al Carajo's fish taco came in the prettiest purple tortilla with a giant piece of fried mahi, topped with cabbage and sriracha crema which was abosulute heaven. The flavors complimented each other so well with the crispy mahi, soft and pillowy tortilla, blended by the creamy sriracha. Definitely top 3 best fish tacos I've ever tried. And I'm not sure why more people don't know about their breakfast burritos but these beat most breakfast burrito places in SF by a landslide. I could've eaten the whole thing and it was generously filled but not overdone. The fluffly scrambled eggs with the crunchiness from the tater tots mixed in with the cheese was chef's kiss. I'll definitely be back and I love how the owner, Javier greets you and is extremely friendly and personable.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
breakfast burrito kind of a splurge in terms of price but loaded with ingredients. lots of textural contrast from the creamy avocado and crispy tots and chorizo, the sriracha mayo complemented everything so well
google avatar

Cidney L.

Yelp
Soooo good. Will definitely be back for the birria pizza before they sell out for the day. Come here for the breakfast burrito and more tacos to share. Order at counter, casual seating indoor and outdoors with cover.

Yelp
Alright it's about time I write a review for this amazing place! My mom actually put me on after her and my Grandma stumbled upon it, and man was I happy she did! The service is super dope, but on top of that the space is clean and I love how open and welcoming it is. Now the food is incredible. I've tried multiple things on their menu and each one has not disappointed! I'm so happy to see people finding out about this place and visiting because it is such a hidden gem that deserves all the business and love! Ps I heard the breakfast burrito is amazing but I still haven't tried it. Another reason to go back! IG: _wheresthefoodat

Yelp
WOW. This light filled, squeaky clean establishment only has a few seating option s but it worked for my little family of 3. Spouse got the Torta de chilaquiles. He said it's "great," before I even asked him, which is HIGH PRAISE. It was also flipping huge. Although it was sizable, there was an airiness to the torta that you don't usually get. I got the Valencia fish tacos and the fish was PERFECTLY CRISPY. The toppings were an amazing crunchy match. They were very sweet to my 4 year old.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
Food: 4.7/5 We got the birria pizza because it looked absolutely amazing, and it definitely was! It came with some green and red salsa, and of course the broth to dip it in. The broth was decent and this pizza is definitely a guilty pleasure type of eats. It is quite salty, so be prepared with a drink of choice. Service: 5/5 Staff was very nice and considerate. The wait for the pizza was about 20 mins.
google avatar

Emily R.

Yelp
We ordered the fish tacos - amazing-a 10++++!! Ordered the Birra pizza $24 - meh, so sorry.... too much cheese, we came here based on the 4.8 rating. I will come back for the fish tacos. It's a small place and everyone is super attentive. I love to support small businesses so will be back for breakfast burrito too!
google avatar

Cynthia S.

Yelp
Wow, sooooo good! Def recommend along with a maya burrito (not pictured). Service was nice too!

Yelp
Great place! Sauces were amazing. Everything was good, especially the Al pastor negro and ceviche. Nice and friendly staff.

Yelp
My boyfriend was craving a breakfast burrito and found Al Carajo in the Mission, not too far from our home. We both ordered a couple pineapple aqua frescas, I ordered the chilequiles and he ordered the breakfast burrito. Both meals were good sized portions. The food was good, but the chilequiles came in this big chinese takeout box with chopsticks which made it hard to eat. It's works for that IG pic, but to eat it was not fun. I asked if I could get it served on a plate next time. Although the take out box was cute, it's not very functional and you end up with all the sauce and chips at the bottom, and the egg, meat and topping at the top- like poorly stacked nachos. That you are supposed to eat with chopsticks? Food was great and service was good. I noticed that they were working on making new dishes and taking pictures of them, which is interesting to me as I love places that are always keeping the menu fresh with new options.
google avatar

Mariah M.

Yelp
SO good. Gone back several times for their breakfast burrito, but recently tried the birria pizza. I'm just going to slowly make my way through the whole menu because I don't think this place will disappoint.
google avatar

Christine F.

Yelp
They're still killing it at Al Carajo. Love the guys behind the counter - so nice. They're my go-to place for breakfast burritos in the city. YUM.
google avatar

Avery M.

Yelp
love the sauce this comes with! gets a little greasy later on if you keep in the bag for a bit. a satisfying burrito

Yelp
It is delicous!! Amazing food, the staff is also super friendly and nice! The food is delicious, I'm from yucatan Mexico and the food is authentic and delicious! Loved it

Yelp
Say what!? Yes! Al Carajo! alcarajosf is such a vibe! If you wanna chill and have a delicious relaxing meal - then alcarajosf got you! Al Carajo used to be a food truck, now you can find them in the Mission. If you wanna try some delicious authentic Mayan cuisine from the Yucatán Peninsula- then look no further! Everything we tried was simply deliciouso, especially the Salbute! So yummy! We can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Food 10/10: Tinga quesadilla was sooo good. Crispy and so flavorful!!!! Pastor Negro tacos, so flavorful and packed with meat plus grilled pineapple. Best Michelada I've ever had, it was perfect 12/10.
google avatar

Paola G.

Yelp
Obsessed with the chilaquiles here! I'm usually super picky when it comes to chilaquiles. Al carajo really surprised me with how perfect my meal was. The tortillas were crunchy, the salsa was the perfect spice, and the pickled onions were delicious. My boyfriend got the breakfast burrito and it was gone within 2 mins. The service was amazing. We love going to restaurants that make us feel welcomed. Javier, the owner, made sure to provide an amazing service. Were excited to go back and take our family this time!

Yelp
Hands down the best breakfast burrito in the city , or even the Bay Area. I don't know what they put in it but it taste different than other breakfast burrito I've had . Will definitely be back to try other items.
