The 25 Best Restaurants In Alameda - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The Alameda Marketplace is basically the small town version of SF’s Ferry Building—it’s a glorious one-stop shop for anything food and drink-related, whether you’re grabbing a strong Vietnamese iced coffee from The Beanery, picking up a birthday cake from Feel Good Bakery, or ordering a tossed-to-order kale caesar from Greens & Grains for the road. There’s also indoor seating if you require a venue for a quick catch-up with an old high school soccer teammate, plus a full grocery store inside for your vitamin and organic snack needs." - julia chen 1, lani conway

The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Alameda | Eater SF

"Home to a specialty butcher, bakery, wine and cheese shop, and natural foods grocery, Alameda Marketplace also houses several food counters perfect for a grab and go lunch. Coffee and sandwiches at the Beanery, a roll or two at Sushi King, falafel at Tahina, or the Greens and Grains salad bar are all excellent choices." - Meleyna Nomura

I love how the influence of local artists shines through in this beautiful space! The food court offers a great variety of restaurants, and the clean, welcoming atmosphere makes it the perfect place to sit back, relax, and enjoy a feast!

Google
This is my favorite market to visit even though I don't buy much except for special occasions. The on-site restaurants and coffee /bakeries make it a great option for when you've got plenty of time to spend shopping. Just be aware that most everything here is in the "be prepared to pay extra or be disappointed" category. Nonetheless, if you want to treat yourself to something nice while also supporting local merchants, this is a great way to do it.

Nick Zeigler

Google
This is a conglomerate of multiple businesses in one location. Wine and cheese shop is lovely, the butcher/fishmonger has high quality goods and reasonable prices, the grocery is more expensive than other options, but has some hard to find ingredients but their produce section is not great - staff is lovely though. There is a baker and some other businesses onsite which I have not explored and on which I cannot comment.

Trena Jones

Google
I love the market and Feel Good bakery. There are other food places, but I don't go to those. They seem to be busy often so they're probably good.

Steve Guttbinder

Google
Total ghost town on the weekends, with most vendors closing early on Saturday and Sunday. This place should bill itself as a mom and pop supermarket rather than saying it houses food vendors. For a place that’s open from 8-8 daily (8-7 on Sunday), they should demand that their vendors do the same.

Nasa Rouf

Google
Niche collection of fancy, expensive and organic options. Never too crowded. Some of the proudest cashiers are waiting here to be replaced by AI

Hiro Cooper

Google
Truly a one stop shop! Not only unique grocery but coffee shop, bakery, butcher, wine and cheese store, florist, sushi shop, healthy salad shop and Mediterranean take out! I’m there weekly!

D Ragland

Google
Cute marketplace, pretty pricey especially for produce. I like going to greens and grains for their steak salad. Yum

Yelp
WHAT, how do I NOT have a Yelp review here... Quality/Quantity - Nice local small marketplace, supermarket. My daughter has been driving 30+ miles for her sashimi grade fish and I suggested she come here instead. So today, I mainly came to share and prove to her that they sell it here. See pictures. Other departments that we frequent are: Coffee shop, Greens & Grains Salad restaurant, Farmstead Cheese & Wine, Sushi King, Feel Good Bakery, Tahina (one of our favorite restaurants), East End (one of our favorite happy hours, $1 oysters, etc), and of course the grocery departments, etc. These departments and businesses are all independent and locally owned. Is the tea shop new? But closed or soon to be open...? I have not seen this here in the past. My wife bought a few loaves of bread today. Atmosphere - Clean, a locally organized medium size supermarket. Plenty of mall parking. Indoor/outdoor seating. Service - Good. Price - Slightly above average, but that is the cost for quality. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 2002, we are long time customers. I still remember East End used to be where Tahina is now.

Yelp
I have yet to explore the entire store, but I like what I see so far. I grabbed a Matcha tea and a Croissant. Both were very good, and I would love to return to grab something to eat while waiting in the long ass line for the BBQ joint down the street. BB BB

Yelp

Theres also a florist to shop for your many choices of bouquets. The whole market us clean and very organized ...the Staff are very very helpful and friendly. I love shopping here. And tell all my friends to check it out while in Alameda.

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing inside. So many different treat offerings from different vendor/restaurants inside. My favorite is Tahina. Unfortunately, while waiting for my food near Baron's seafood & Meats, a HUGE RAT came scurrying out from Baron's while I was sitting across the way at the sitting bar area. I was horrified and it really ruined my experience. I hope this RAT issue gets resolved right away! It was awful!

Yelp
** The following review reflects my experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** This red brick building is actually a key touch point for me and Jamie W. because we sometimes stroll Park Street from Alameda Beach to here and then back again. On a fair weather weekend, it's a pleasant walk because there are lots of places to stop and grab a bite. What makes this destination attractive is that there are ten separate businesses housed in here, and they've been able to control the foot traffic to survive this pandemic. You enter from the parking lot side, and you may have to wait a bit if it's busier than usual. We've had the huge salads at Greens & Grains and the hand rolls at Sushi King. An extensive butchery and bakery anchor the line of shops, but most of the space is actually devoted to the organic offerings in the Alameda Natural Grocery store. I've never been disappointed with the produce selection here. This gourmand's emporium is well worth a stop given all the necessary precautions. RELATED - Exploring Alameda? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://bit.ly/2Ik8mky

Yelp
I like this Market!! I was in here pre corona, so I don't know about current changes. It's a little pricey, and the parking lot is a little cramped sometimes, but inside I saw a sushi place, pizza place and a bakery inside. All are very small with very limited seating, basically it's set up to go. The market has a nice sized wine collection area, and the market itself is bigger than the other areas. I did like their juice selection. Good place!!

Yelp
Please get the weevils, or whatever they are, out of your bulk products. It's obviously not a good thing to buy products and then have to throw them away several weeks later. Thank you.

Yelp
"Karen looms large, at Alameda Marketplace" 530 Sunday evening Sept 18. Purchased a bag of popcorn at the market place, while eating the popcorn, my wife was at the register purchasing $137 of items for home. The clerk asked very loudly in front of all present, "sir did you purchase that popcorn"? Bewildered, wondering why I was asked such a question while sitting right in front of the register waiting for my wife's purchases to be completed. The clerk said that her manager asked her to question me, I suppose she assumed I look like a guy that would steal a bag of popcorn and blatantly eat it in front of them. My apologies to the clerk, your manager shows both poor judgement, and cowardice. Next time she asks you to play rent a cop, think twice! Unless of course you enjoy treating your repeat customers like garbage!

Yelp
It's christmas eve. Mary Angel rings me up with her RUDE bagger or coworker who tells me i'm next by wiggling her index finger up and down like she flicking on and off a light swich or something.I thought she was saying hi to someone and i get rushed to the cashier. Ok so i set my basket down then was told to remove my items from the cart. No kidding! Thats what we SHOULD do but your acting like i am an inconvience already. Its 4pm. Your here till 7. Dont take it out on me. The rude lady behind me in line comes right up next to me arm to arm. (Hello six feet please)Sorry i wanted to put my wallet back in my purse for the 5 items i used my card to purchase. We are in a pandemic, why wouldn't your cashier ask her to wait ONE SECOND so i could drop my card in my purse and pick up my bags? I was treated very poorly. Your staff was very rude today.

Yelp
I didn't think it was capable to like a market so much. I'm so glad we stumbled on in here. Their bakery is superrrrrr nicee!! Macaroons are yummy and more yummy, the best I've ever had. I must come back for more treats, or maybe even last a minute birthday cake lol. Sanitize hands on the way in and customer service was friendly.

Lila M.

Yelp
Always clean, well-stocked with good quality items. It's a one-stop shop for groceries, fresh baked goods & freshly prepared meals to eat-in or take home. It's highlighted with a very nice wine shop & coffee shop. A great Alameda tradition!

Yelp
They need to do some fruit and veg quality check. Purchased these guys today and when i got home they were already rotting. Bell peppers i got were pretty bad too.
google avatar

Concha G.

Yelp
UPDATE: I think management figured out how to keep their staff and customers safe. I went back yesterday (4/23), and the guy at the door was actually limiting the number of people inside the store: one person out = one in, two out = two in, etc. Finally. When I got inside, there were no employees crowding the aisles and forcing customers to crowd into aisles with them just to grab one item. Everyone inside the store was wearing a mask and shoppers were being quick. Everyone seemed to have a list and no one browsed aimlessly while their children ran around unsupervised. I was able to get in and out, and was never forced to run an obstacle course.

Yelp
Sort of an industrial chic feel to this place, very similar set up to the one in the city on 10th and Market... only this one is smaller. A bakery, meat and seafood, natural grocery store, cheese and wine, the Beanery, East End and more. The Bakery is ok for lunch, even better for dessert. Its expensive but some of the stuff is really good. For example they have the most beautiful pies around. East End is known for pizza chicken and drinks. Baron's meat is known great meat including more unusual meats - rabbit/goose and grass fed local/sustainable Organic groceries and health supplements. There is a restroom that operates on coins just past the butcher. Grab a token when you are at the register. Parking is ok - spaces are small. Out door seating. Very pleasant experience.

Yelp
Quick visit since i went to Feel Good Bakery for some items. I'll definitely have to return and peruse the other places located in this cool place..i saw Farmstead Cheese and Wine, pizza place, a sushi place and specialty/gourmet groceries. I was definitely impressed with the variety and will be back soon!

Justin M.

Yelp
Terrible place. You think their customer service would be great considering you are paying way more than you would at trader joes. They had smaller eggplants which will make my ratatouille look uniformed. So I gave them one star for that. 3 checkers but only one was technically open. All of them with shitty attitudes. When one of them finally opened up she took the people in back of me even know I had like 2 items. I have always thought about this place as shitty experience, and it was everything i thought it would be. The bakery inside looks good though.

Yelp
There needs to be some consistency here with their Covid protocols. I've been here often, especially during the SIP. 1. I went here to pick up a Mother's Day cake and a woman who was behind me was wearing a mask that only covered her mouth and not her nose. She kept creeping up behind me super close, even though they have markers on the ground. Then, when it was her turn to order, she took off her mask to talk and kept getting really close to me. Thr employee did not say anything correct her. 2. I've been here when the security guard is outside and on duty. I think he does a great job at making sure everyone uses sanitizer and wearing masks before they enter. It's when he's not on duty when things get crazy there. (See #1, he was not on duty when the woman mentioned above entered.) 3. Another time the security guard was not working they had a grocer working the front. Usually the security guard lets you in if you're going to one of the vendor kiosks and no the grocery store. They have their own socially distanced lines. This one day I went I thought that I could go to Feel Good Bakery and stand in their line like he usually allows, but the grocer working the table started screaming at me. She said that I had to wait in the line outside whether I wanted the grocery store or not. When I asked her if it was a new procedure, she was very snotty and rude to me and told me to wait in line. I like this place, because they tend to be "safer" than other grocery stores. If the security guard is on duty I'm more likely to shop here. Unfortunately, since that snotty grocer was rude to me I haven't been back. Their prices are way more expensive that normal grocery stores.

Yelp
Decent shop and selection despite the markups, but I stay away because the clients are awful, nosy people who think it is OK to take things out of your basket and tell you how terrible a person you are for purchasing [thing they don't like]. The attached bakery staff are also uncleanly, wearing the same gloves to grab bread and pastries as they do to take cash and cards from people. No washing of hands, no changing of gloves, and definitely no use of tongs.
google avatar

Kat A.

Yelp
As I look at all the organic CA produce, I realize how grateful I am to have this selection. I don't know why it took me years to write a review! I love the marketplace and the high quality of foods it offers.
google avatar

Bill B.

Yelp
This place has great shops and restaurants, BUT, the tables and counters are consistently dirty and food is strewn about. Bring your own wet wipes to tidy up before sitting down where your arms will stick to the wooden table tops. Yuck. Every. Single. Time. UPDATE: Still trashed table tops. Yuck.

Roberta T.

Yelp
I'm not sure how I should proceed from now on because of tipping baskets and credit card readers placed at the cashiers counter in the store today. Is there a choice for non-tipping or choosing amount I wish to tip, if any. Please be aware that some of us shopping there are also minimum wage workers or are on fixed incomes. They are adding more onto our grocery and meat bills than we already pay in the store. Staying away from chemical laced foods and vegetables won't be easy with the price being added on to our foods and meats at this market place.

Alex R.

Yelp
I went to the grocery to get some small odds and ends to finish off the week. I was feeling exhausted today and was kinda out of it but when I went to ring out I got checked out by this amazing lady named Tamisha. She is such a joy and brighten up the remaining of my day with her laughter and comedic banter. She is definitely one heck of an employee!
google avatar

Nancy L.

Yelp
Cute little grocery market located on Park Street. Inside, there's a market that's similar to your Whole Foods and Sprouts. Take a walk around and find the butcher shop, a Japanese sushi stop, and even a pasta joint!
google avatar

Savannah D.

Yelp
Covid-19 line facilitator needs an attitude adjustment. Maybe take a note from Trader Joe's. Otherwise, this store is great.
google avatar

Naomi B.

Yelp
Great market! And they carry Liquified Juicery my fav juice company in the Bay Area! Highly recommend grabbing those cold pressed juices there!
google avatar

Mustang L.

Yelp
I like this place for the bakery and the cruelty free beauty supplies. The only draw back is the woman who works in the health and beauty section now. There used to be a person who was absolutely wonderful, she gave me great advice and was so welcoming. I have been a customer for over six years and this woman acts like it's the first time she has seen me every single time. Additionally, if I return something she acts like I have committed a crime. It's a real turn off. I like to go and decompress and look around and the last time I went she was so hostile and acted as if I didn't belong. Anyway, it was unpleasant and I've been a good customer.
google avatar

Marco M.

Yelp
The little natural grocery is nice. They have a small but useful produce section, lots of organic stuff. Much less intense than Whole Foods and Berkeley Bowl. The staff was helpful in finding various items. The gift shop right across has great dish towels and kitchen accessories. There is also a wine shop and bakery and other shops to explore in the same large building.
google avatar

Hoa G.

Yelp
Alameda Marketplace has a few different stores/restaurants in there. There's a bakery, sushi, salad options, etc. I use to always love going to the bakery (Feel Goods) to get their macarons! There was a hype about macarons a few years back and I wanted to see what it was all about. The ones here are pretty good, but pretty expensive. I've had better ones along the years and the prices for it went up. The pastries are beautiful looking and the sushi restaurant is delicious! I haven't gotten a chance to look around and see what else is there but from the signs there's a few different options to choose from.

Yelp
Alameda Marketplace is a collection of artisan and independent businesses. excellent place to grab some items when short on time. vendors in da alameda marketplace: -east end pizza: excellent thin crust pizza, closed mondays? -sushi kng: oaktown's outpost has fresher fish -alameda natural market-avoid the lines by shopping here, more $ -baron's meats-great steaks/beef for those inclined, not me -the beanery: fair traded coffee, nice brew -massage for those in knead -ching hua: avoid the happy hour appetizers -culina: nice artisan sammies -farmstead wines & cheeses: new vineyards highlighted and cheesy samples -feel good bakery: pricing is cheaper here than at the farmers market. -a new mexican theme eatery has opened?: not sure, didn't stop take outs: -plenty of parking in many lots nearby -lines short in many cases (not peak hours_ -friendly, efficient service.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this cute little marketplace while scouting Alameda for excitement. It's so cute! It's very Andronicos meets Whole Foods meets an actual marketplace. There's a little coffeeshop, a little bakery, and a wine shop. There were lots of those cool, hipster, microwavable food. There wasn't a big selection of beer, but there was a whole lot of biodegradable, organic, fair trade fun stuff. Of course, there's a trade off that you pay for to get all your hipster food. But it's just so cute and you feel good shopping here that it's all good.

Yelp
Somehow this place has changed. Or I have changed. I actually like coming here now. I'm ambivalent about JP's move. On the one hand JP's will then be only 3 blocks from home. But on the other, there will be one less reason to go to the Marketplace. Oh, well. One great update: Parking is now convenient!
google avatar

Yelp
Love this market place a lot. Nice fresh fruits and veggies, clean and in order . Got super fresh honey sample today and it taste so delicious .

Yelp
I enjoy coming here every time I'm in Alameda! Quick yummy sushi, great coffee (!), fresh meat counter, beautiful bakery , kitchen gadgets galore and then do some grocery shopping too.

Yelp
I dig the bakery and wine and cheese shops most. I have had a good poke around in the food market itself, and, in general, have been able to find what I need/want like Brown Cow and Strauss Family Creamery brands. The bin food section is reasonably stocked. When I last went in there seemed to be a tahini deficit Alameda-wide (TJs no longer carries straight tahini, Lucky's was out-of-stock...), and AM was my last stop before giving up on the idea of making hummus. AM did have tahini, but only their most expensive brand (at around 14 bucks) as all others had sold out. There's something about the overall space that doesn't jibe with me. I'd like it to be a bit livelier in AM. (Maybe I always go during their off-peak times?) Anyway, I think the quiet vibe may have something to do with the lack of general seating for those who wish to purchase and consume on premises. I mean there is *some* seating, but, if I were in charge, then I might take away the massage 'corner' that never seems to have any business when I shop at AM, and put in two and four-top tables in its stead. Or, instead of a massage spot (I've never been one to combine buying groceries and a back rub, really), I'd put in a proper florist!

Yelp
What's not to love? Everywhere you look you'll find fresh, flavorful, and healthy selections... No, this is not a supermarket. If that's what you want, go to Nob Hill up the street. But for specialty foods, you can't do better than Alameda Marketplace!

Merce H.

Yelp
First time at this grocery store and I have to say that some of the vegetables were not as fresh as I expected. I got home and started chopping the cauliflower and it came with a nice surprise. Big alive worm and surrounded by plenty of offspring...

Winston Wei W.

Yelp
I bagged my groceries and y'all still ask for a tip? C'mon, you know better than that.
google avatar

Anh-Dao T.

Yelp
Lunch today: East End's vegetarian pizza with a side of sashimi from Sushi King. On another visit, I had a hamachi roll, then finished with a cup of the Beanery's house blend coffee. For the indecisive, eating at the Marketplace is definitely the way to go. p.s. Wine tastings at Farmstead every Thurs (5-7pm) and Sat (2-4pm) for $1. Loves it.
google avatar

Karen T.

Yelp
Love this market. Very conveniently located. Every time I come here i'm not disappointed with the quality of the produce and service. Lots of selection and the store is always clean. Only drawback is the pricing as it's a tad bit more expensive. But that is expected for the location as I am not trying to drive to Whole Foods.
google avatar

David F.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Alameda... Fresh Orgainc food and drinks and lots of variety... Not the cheapest of course if you want quality food for your health...
google avatar

Yelp
I was in alameda and I decided to stop in here because "feel good bakery" doesn't come to the framers market in San Ramon anymore. (Wont ever go to feel good bakery, see my separate review) The grocery store was over priced they didn't have anything that I can't pick up at whole foods or Safeway in San Ramon, and the prices at this place seemed higher than Safeway or Whole foods. I did buy a ton of Vitamins and the lady who helped me was so informative and a great salesperson. The older women clerks by the Vitamin area deserve 5 STARS for their customer service and knowledge. I knew I was overpaying for the items but she was knowledgable and gave me great info that I couldn't resist spending the $150 I spent on Vitamins :) (bikini body season is around the corner so of course I need my healthy vitamins!) Thankfully I have a Whole foods and a Safeway in San Ramon that carries all the items they have at a lower price or otherwise I just simply couldn't justify paying the prices they have at this placw but I guess for Alameda it's a great place .

Yelp
For supplements this place is the only place I found on the island with refrigerated probiotics!!! I went in all the way, I was so excited! I can't believe I have a place this close with all these goodies. I have digestive issues so I get excited about this kind of stuff. And the prices for the probiotics are totally in line with other places I've been like vitamin shoppe.
google avatar

Kenzie C.

Yelp
Love this natural grocery for plastic free produce! Lots of all natural and healthy food to choose from. Plus there's a butcher and some yummy local food in the same building! A great local place to support!

Yelp
Alameda Marketplace is exactly what the East Bay needs. Organic, sustainable, local and independent all piled together to create one amazing shopping center. Instead of individually reviewing each business that resides in the Alameda Marketplace(although I might review them individually later, lol) I figured I'd pile them all into one review- That way you'll get the gist of this awesome location much quicker. The focal point of the Alameda Marketplace is the Alameda Natural Grocery. Kinda like 'The Berkeley Bowl' or 'The Food Mill' in Oakland, this place packs nothing but natural and organic products. I come here for my organic cereals and milk mostly- If you're from Alameda, check out your blue phone book for coupons! Looking for cheese? Farmstead Cheeses & Wine has a great selection. Employees here are very helpful, PLUS they have wine tasting every Saturday from 2-5 PM! Only $3! Baron's Meat & Seafood has a wide selection of meats for really exceptional prices. Free range and grass fed. Chicken, lamb, rabbits and buffaloes. You name it. If you're headed out for a picnic- I'd suggest hitting up Culina or Feel Good Bakery before you go! Culina has great pastas and salads already whipped up- Last time I came here and picked up a chile relleno and pesto pasta. From Feel Good Bakery- the cookies are DELICIOUS! Lastly, Beanery Coffee Co. is my favorite coffee spot in Alameda. There are other locations in Berkeley and SF. Forget Starbucks down the street- Beanery is where it's at! If you're ever in Alameda and you're into the whole organic thing- or if you're down for trying a wide variety of artisan shops all in one location, the Alameda Marketplace has it all. I'm very happy this was built in Alameda- I hope it lasts a very long time. 5 Stars for putting it all together!

Yelp
Cool gathering of Little Food Stands and Shops not a bad place to spend a few hours shopping or munching . Used to be an Auto dealership at one time.
google avatar

Monica S.

Yelp
Before the rise of stores like Whole Foods, spots like Alameda Marketplace reigned supreme as the neighborhood's source of locally fetched produce, meats and more. If today's organic culture has gone corporate, it's marketplaces like this that maintain the spirit behind the natural food movement. Alameda Marketplace offers an awesome opportunity to shop amongst some of the East Bay's most local mom n pop shops. Farmstead, purveyors of wine and cheese, offer their goods to epicurean shoppers. Beanery coffee grinds up some of the best cups of joe this side of Blue Bottle; and another 8 independent businesses with a commitment to the culinary class sets up shop here. Whether you're popping in for an apple or a free-range chicken, the Marketplace has you covered!

Yelp
I mean maybe it's bc I'm 27 and haven't "made it" yet but this place is waaay oh waaay waaay to expensive for my blood. Basically a mini whole foods. It's great looking place. Employees all looked bright eyed and bushy tailed, which was nice. Will revisit after I hit the lotto
google avatar

Yelp
When my son went to school on the Island, we would stop here for a snack and sometimes groceries. You'll find a series of small shops within, with my favourites being the Cheesemonger, the coffee shop, and the bakery in the far back corner. The Kid goes after some of the Asian food choices and the produce. I like to take out-of-town guests here to as there's a little bit of something for everyone here.

Yelp
So this was my first visit here. WTF? How did this place elude me for so long? Are you kidding? A real butcher? A real bakery? A sushi deli and all centered around a grocery store? I'm almost mad at the people who live in this area for never having shared this place with me. This place is pretty awesome. I'm especially fond of the butcher shop and the bakery. The butcher has some good cuts, good selection of fish, poultry, pork, beef, and some other delicacies. They had pre packed marinated duck breasts. They had an awesome selection of sausages. The fish and crustaceans were also as fresh as could be. I wanted to have a reason to buy something from here but sadly no home cooking today. I Will be back. I promise. Please wait for me. The bakery. Man oh man those macarons were so awesome. I've had milette and bouchon and a few others I thought were the best but not anymore. That pistachio was on point like excalibur and that bananas foster was crack addiction caliber. We got a loaf of Epi and some jalapeño cheese sticks to try later and I'm looking forward to those too. Alameda you are hiding some diamonds here. I'm due for a visit soon enough.
