The Best Restaurants in New Cross | Where to Eat in SE14 | Eater London
"Alaowerri Restaurant specialises in isi ewu, a traditional Nigerian dish of slow-cooked goat head. Here, the tender meat is spiced with ehu seeds and chilli, complete with potash and utazi leaves which lend a slight bitterness, garnished with thick rings of raw white onion. Naturally, it’s a must-try alongside other West African classics such as nkwobi featuring spiced, boneless cow foot with a slightly sweet sauce; beef suya flecked with peanut kuli kuli; and jollof rice with fried fish and plantain. Consider visiting in a decent sized group to sample as much of the menu as possible. Alternatively, takeaway is offered, but bear in mind the isi ewu can take up to an hour to prepare, so should be ordered in advance." - Jonathan Hatchman
Where to Eat on London’s Restaurant Scene This Weekend | Eater London
"A New Cross Road restaurant serving unapologetically Igbo dishes from eastern Nigeria, offering bold, traditional plates such as nkwobi (cow foot simmered with ehu seeds) and isi ewu (a whole goat’s head cooked in searing spices with bitter utazi leaves). The cooking is intense and uncompromising—some items will be too challenging for many diners—but the menu demonstrates a culinary lineage independent of, yet resonant with, the British offal revival sparked by places like St. John, presenting dishes that are visceral, textural and deeply rooted in community memory." - Adam Coghlan
For authentic isi-ewu, nkwobi, ugba and stockfish...etc and other African dishes, visit here. The owner, Uncle Joe, is very nice and makes sure customers are well attended to. His prices are also very good. I will visit again for sure.

Service was good but food was unfortunately not there at all, the moinmoin was soaked in salt, the amala felt like water until we sent it back but they were kind enough to make another amala which was better. The price was a bit on the high side.

Really great Nigerian restaurant. Space is small so plan your visit against/ahead of peak times. The food is delicious and the owner is a very nice and friendly man. The service is great and I will definitely be coming back. The isiewu in particular is amazing! Honestly, the food there is really good.

Firstly I do not leave reviews on google unless I really have to or see the need to. I haven’t been there.however I ordered online on deliveroo. The jollof rice was more of curry rice definitely wasn’t jollof .it was a yellow colour tested nothing like jollof.
Thank God I had some shito at home to make this taste better the meat was laking seasoning 🧂 and the fish I ordered was like it was just cooked in a plain tomato sauce.
The only thing that was nice in my order was the plantain. Potion sizes are really good but yeah the food could really do with some seasoning and the jollof needs to improve.

I’m hard to please when it comes to Igbo soups but Alaowerri surpassed my expectations. I ate Oha soup with poundo yam. I’ve never eaten Oha soup this good in London. Also got beef suya from here. The suya was so tasty.
The food portions are huge.
The guy who attended to us was warm and friendly too.
I love the ambience in the restaurant as well.
I’m defo revisiting.

Never had isi ewu before, so I can't compare. Staff are attentive. Average nigerian restaurant. The afrobeat music was good choices.
