Albanese Meats and Poultry Celebrates 100 Years of Butcher Shop | Eater NY

"When I step into Albanese Meats & Poultry on Elizabeth Street in Little Italy, I’m met with a century of family-run charm: a display case of bone-in rib-eye, whole chickens, and Italian sausages; boxes of dried pasta and even fake sausages by Yuki & Daughters dangling from the windows and poles; and walls dotted with postcards, old photographs, painted portraits, faded newspaper clippings, mint-green paint, bright red brick, and a timeless collection of vintage butcher supplies that felt like their own little museum. Jennifer Prezioso, the fourth-generation butcher who now runs the shop alone, chats with customers about Tuscan-style pâtés, pork rinds, and salumi, hands a regular their standard-order duck breast, and worries aloud about how to let people enjoy the space while helping the store make money. The shop’s history — opened by Vincenzo Albanese after immigrating from Sicily, stewarded by her great-grandmother Mary and later by the late Moe “the Butcher” Albanese, who famously coaxed customers into trying his “gotcha” rib-eye — is woven into every corner, and the store has appeared in documentaries, New York historical food tours, and productions like The Godfather Part III and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Despite a devoted community of longtime and new customers who praise the freshness and character of the meat, the shop faces real financial hurdles: it doesn’t own the building, lacks commercial rent stabilization, and competes with delivery services and big grocery chains. Prezioso has been learning the trade from Moe, rebuilding operations, filming for Instagram, and planning new initiatives — tote bags, meal kits, and reimagining the space for events and pop-ups — even as she quietly marked the shop’s 100th year and hesitated to throw a big celebration for fear of bad luck. Ultimately, I found the place to be a bright, living link to Little Italy’s past and a community hub that Prezioso is trying to sustain for the future." - Jess Eng

Coronavirus in NYC: Little Italy Butcher Moe Albanese Dies Due to COVID-19 - Eater NY

"Albanese Meats & Poultry was opened by Moe Albanese’s parents in 1923. Known for its warm and thoughtful service, the shop was a beloved neighborhood fixture. It was modernized by Albanese's granddaughter in recent years and was featured in the Amazon series 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.' Outstanding meat shop in New York . Charming store and friendly owner .. A hidden gem . I found great pasta as well . This store is full history.. Jennifer took over the shop after her grandfather passed from Covid and she is doing a great job . She learned the trade and continues the legacy .

Google
If you see a one star review from a grumpy and always looking for the negatives in life “customer” please disregard. Albanese Meats has been in the family for basically 100 years. Moe was loved by the community and had his amazing “Got’ch Steaks”. His Grandaughter Jennifer took over the mantle when Moe passed and is doing an amazing job honoring the legacy of the shop and offering amazing and kind service with quality meats. Please support this historic shop and remember to be kind and gracious just as Jennifer is.

I got an incredible cut of beef tenderloin that absolutely stole Christmas dinner. Everyone was super friendly despite it being near closing and having a nearly full house of customers. Very happy that I called ahead, will be coming here from now on for all my meat needs.

Such a lovely butcher shop! The bone in rib-eye was delicious. I think this was $35 or $38 per pound. The store accepts credit cards, but note $1 fee applies, so don’t be surprised.

I have seen this place featured on Instagram before. I work nearby, so I thought I’d give it a try. I arrived at 5:20, and Jennifer was finishing with a customer. As soon as she noticed me she greeted me and asked me what I needed, so she can tell me if they have it or not before I continue waiting. Some places (with far more personnel working the same shift) don’t do this, and while I understood I had to wait, it’s a nice gesture. Once I got to place my order, she took the time to cut them to specification and cleaning the excess fat. The meat looked good already, and I couldn’t wait to get home to cook it. It smells fresh, it doesn’t look brown, and the marbling on the short rib is amazing. I sous vide cooked them for 24hrs and it’s definitely one of the best short ribs I tried. I’m definitely coming back, specially after learning they have rabbit and duck to order. Noticeable mention is how clean everything is. The knives and equipment are spotless and the entire place is neatly clean. Amazing customer service, and just as amazing quality meat. I’ll be coming back for sure!

Google
If you’re looking for great quality meat, look no further than Albanese. The multi generation owned butcher has really great steaks ranging from rib eye, strip, flank, and much more. Plus Jen is the nicest to help you pick meat fit for whatever occasion you’re looking for. Most meat options are mainly grass fed with a grain finishing. Come here once a month for my red meat fix! Prices range from $25-35 per pound.

Needed a gift certificate for a gift to a friend who lives in that neighborhood. I do not live nearby, but Jennifer, the owner, could not have been more pleasant nor more helpful. With that kind of service, I'm sure I'd be a regular customer if I lived nearby!

Yelp
Love this old fashioned meat store to get quality meats. The owner is super nice and personable. I got pork chops and bacon and both were quality meats and I would come back!

Yelp
Albanese Meats and Poultry is a gem! The store is family-owned and so much fun to visit. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon it when exploring NOLITA. I'm so glad we did, because this place had the best sweet sausages I've ever had! I felt like the prices were reasonable as well, especially for a true, family-owned butcher shop. I'm excited to try cooking one of their steaks in the future!

Janette B.

Yelp
The BEST butcher run by the granddaughter of the original owner and her husband. Amazing pork sage sausages and cool gifts. Jen, the butcher, is wonderful always a pleasure to shop there

Yelp
Finest cuts of meat - always fresh! Jenny does a great job sourcing her meat, and preparing them attractively.

Yelp
The BEST butcher shop in NYC. I stumbled in there 3 years ago and never looked back. The quality is unparalleled. I'm not sure how the meat is this much better, but it is. And I've tried everywhere. Jenn is a sweat heart and always so kind and helpful. Oh and the vibe in this place feels like you're stepping into a time capsule. You really feel the history when you walk into this third generation establishment. 11/10

Yelp
If you want to find the best butcher in the city, look no further! I wanted to make bo ssam (a la David Chang) but struggled finding a large enough cut of pork butt at normal city grocery stores. I stumbled upon Albanese online, and after speaking with the store, they were able to help. This is the only place I've found in NYC that can cater to specific needs for cooking. They were in touch with me every step of the way, going above and beyond, from helping me order the right cut, through delivery (which is a lifesaver, if you don't want to shlep a large piece of meat). The pork was a beautiful marbled cut, and was so flavorful and tender when prepared. Thank you Albanese, I am so grateful!!

Yelp
I was recently looking to purchase some high quality brisket. After not seeing what I wanted at Whole Foods and a few other butchers in the Chelsea / East Village areas, I called Albanese Meats & Poultry and they were able to help. On the call Jennifer gave me a breakdown of all their cuts of beef they usually carry, and said that she could get some brisket for me the next day. She also explained how the cows she sources from are treated for the duration of their life (grass-fed and grain-finished, something to do with the marbling) and was very transparent. The meat looked very good when I went and picked it up the next day. Nice color, appeared very fresh. I have had bad experiences with other butchers who freeze their meat beforehand which makes it difficult to know how long it will last. Jennifer told me exactly how long the cut I purchased would last and what to expect in terms of coloration & oxidation after 2, 3, 4 days. It is amazing how they do not freeze anything at Albanese Meats & Poultry and that they make it a point to source fresh meat for customer orders. This is the best butcher I've been to in Manhattan. Not to mention the price was great for high-quality meat!

Yelp
One of the loveliest butcher shops ever. Got some ground veal and it looks delicious. The butcher is really nice and will help with any cut you need. Very knowledgeable and polite. Shop has quaint decor as well with functional antique-looking butcher shop equipment.

Yelp
Grandma is a Sicilian and we watch Rachel Ray every day. Today we were suprised to see Albanese featured! Grandma immediately lit up and told me stories of how she visited this store in the 1950's. I even learned that " piano piano " means to go slow. Thank you for the awesome memory prodding for Grandma!

Yelp
After getting lunch in Nolita Saturday we stopped by Albanese Meats & Poultry to get some steaks. It was such a nice experience! Moe was showing people the photos on the wall and the butcher Jen was taking orders and serving customers. When it was our turn, Jen pulled out a new whole rack of ribeye and showed the different sides we could choose for a thicker or thinner cut. The ribeye had so much marbling, you could tell it was going to be flavorful. We also got a skirt steak which ended up being a lot of meat for the price. Jen explained every piece of meat is cut to order and she had a lot of attention to detail in trimming the steaks. She was also super nice and asked us our names and we talked about Brooklyn for a bit. Moe invited us to sit down while we waited too. Definitely a level of service that made errands feel not like errands and entices you to come back. The steaks were delicious for dinner, especially the ribeye or the "gotcha steak" as they call them here :)

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. I recently discovered this place from Too Good To Go and Jen was so lovely. She was personable and you can feel her genuine and good natured personality in the way she speaks to people. I don't particularly like butcher shops with the men being curt and transactional. After my first trip to the store, I read up more on the history and found out about Grandpa Moe. I returned after two weeks with another Too Good To Go order and plans to try their "gotcha" steaks. Jen was helpful as usual and she offered the bone-in or boneless gotcha steaks. Jen trimmed the fat and also reserved a bit of fat so I can cook it with the steak. I was honestly a little skeptical but I wanted to try it and also help out a small family owned restaurant. I also picked up a slab of pork ribs for my Too Good To Go order. She expertly hacked and cut everything and tied it in small packages. So awesome. The next day, I simply salt and peppered the steak and put it on a skillet. I was still skeptical but once I put the first piece of steak in my mouth, it was amazingly flavorful and tender. It was so divine. It was a little over 300 grams of meat but it was well worth the $21 price tag. Truly lived up to the "gotcha" steak name. Sure it's a little pricy compared to the meat I would normally get but meat from Albanese Meat and Poultry is a treat and I can't wait to go back and try something new.

Yelp
This place is definitely worth checking out. Even just to walk by and gawk at, thought the quality is worth going inside for. The place looks like something lost in time from SoHo 100 years ago. Jennifer was great and sliced me an inch and a half thick rib-eye and wrapped it in paper and twine. I was so excited to open the package when I got home. I've been experimenting recently, trying steaks from a lot of butcher shops downtown -- and maybe I am just getting better at preparing it but this rib-eye was the steak best yet. I shouldn't be saying that since I have tried a lot of really great other butcher shops in the LES recently but this was a lovely experience and made for a really lovely steakhouse quality home-cooked supper.

Yelp
The best steaks in the city! My chef friend and I sourced Albanese meats and everyone said it was the best steak they had ever had. Jenn could not be lovelier and was super accommodating given that we are a big company. Really shocked to see a review calling her rude as I've known her for decades and she is the NICEST person. No One is perfect but Jenn Jenn is very well mannered and again this is hard to believe. Get your steak, chicken and freshest meats here and thank me later! Tell Jenn that Pammycakes sent you

Yelp
First off thanks for letting me in while you opened up because it was freezing out! Thank you for supplying me with a great duck! My clients meal came out perfect thanks to you having a great selection of meats. Excited to do further business with you! Proud of what you're doing and I can't wait for the improvements you envision to expand the business. He would be proud.

Yelp
When you walk into business and see and feel the integrity and pride of the work they do. Not to mention the carrying on of the tradition and heritage. It's kinda weird in going to say this, but it's magical. I could write a whole chapter about my feeling and experience of this tiny butcher shop. I remember as a little boy the combination of sawdust on the floor and meat how it would smell. This place took me back there.
google avatar

Samuel M.

Yelp
I stopped by this place on Tuesday. Right when I walk in, the girl behind the counter was so rude (she is the granddaughter of the original owner). She didn't greet me at all and just kept talking on the phone nonstop. When I was waiting, I decided to take a few pictures...and it was then...that she decided to open her mouth and tell me that she doesn't want people taking pictures. Seriously though, she needs to put some respect on her grandpa's business.

Yelp
I live on Long Island and purposely drive into the city once a month to stock up on meat from Albanese Meats and Poultry. All of her products are great quality. And if I need something special, I'll call her a day ahead and she'll get it for me. The posted pictures are only some of the things I've gotten from her. Not pictured, that I've also bought before, are slab bacon, milk fed veal chops, Italian sweet sausage, chopped meat from whole muscle, ground lamb, ground veal, second cut brisket and lamb stew meat. I can't wait to try everything else. I know I will not be disappointed. I appreciate the butcher that she is because there are not that many old school butcher shops left. That's why I'm willing to drive all the way into the city for it. Thank you for such great customer service, Jen.

Alice H.

Yelp
I was having a hard time in NYC finding chicken necks and backs / stock bones for making homemade chicken stock. My local grocery store in the CA bay area always stocks these but every grocery I visited in Manhattan didn't have them. I stumbled upon this butcher shop online and gave them a call - while they didn't have them in stock that day they said they'd see if they could pick them up at the market the next day and would text me if they did. Jen secured the goods the next day, messaged me, and I had them in hand that evening. The price was also super reasonable for this level of quality and service. Jen was also really nice and sweet throughout. Since learning this is a long-running family operation started in the 1900s, I'm excited to come back and support them. I'm also excited to try some of their other offerings, which looked super delicious too.

Jimmy C.

Yelp
Just saw your story on CBS.... I will be there soon. My dad is going to be 96 next month and was a meat cutter. Even though we did not have our own shop, I know how you feel about continuing that type of store. I think it's great you're doing this and hope that story brings you a ton of business. Enjoy your holidays and I look forward to seeing your family's place. We live in CT so we most likely will be there after the new year. Take care!

Evan D.

Yelp
If you live anywhere in the neighborhood, why would you buy your meat anywhere else? Few businesses have the combination of quality, heart, history and community like Albanese. Stop messing around, go see Jen at Albanese and get your meat!
google avatar

Jeffrey C.

Yelp
This butcher shop is ran by the granddaughter of the original owner, Moe, who opened the shop many decades ago. It's an original treasure in the middle of a very different/new New York. These are the kinds of businesses that should be frequented as often as possible. The young woman who helped me was extremely helpful and gracious. In fact, she mistakenly overcharged me (I didn't realize this) and she issued a refund of the over charge directly to my account without me ever asking about it. If you're looking to support a real Little Italy (now NOLITA) gem, check them out.

Corianna M.

Yelp
What a treat. Albanese is a real family run store. It is on my must go list for whenever I stop over in NYC. Top notch butchery AND a real slice of NYC. Their cuts are the best.

Alexandra M.

Yelp
Nicest staff, great quality meats! I bought marrow bones for my dog here and it's a tricky thing to buy because from a bad place it can make them sick but my dog was healthier than ever after the bone and also extremely happy about the treat!
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful store and great selection of meat! Why shop at whole foods when you can get great meat from a wonderful local small business. I can't wait to go back

Yelp
Albanese Meats & Poultry is an absolute gem in downtown NYC. Jen and Moe know how to make you feel welcome and provide stellar service. Each week I shop for my meat there and love the fresh selection of lamb chops, pork chops, bacon (especially the applewood), chicken, skirt steak, short rib, and have really enjoyed their veal too. Jen is very considerate with your order, and takes a lot of care preparing the meat for you how you would like it. The meat is also very fairly priced - just make sure you bring cash. The customers who visit are exceptionally friendly too while they are waiting, and you know it's because of the warmth and sense of community you feel instantly when you step inside. If Jen is serving someone, take a seat, enjoy the record that is playing, people-watch with Moe, eye the lovely family photos on the wall, and enjoy the serenity in one of downtown NYC's last-standing Mom & Pop stores.
google avatar

Maciek P.

Yelp
Real quality butcher shop. I asked for a piece of steak and I got exactly what I needed for the day. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Stephen W.

Yelp
Great shop and always great service from Jennifer, who took over the shop for her grandfather Moe who recently passed. It's like taking a step back in time when you walk through the door and she is always willing to go above and beyond to get you anything you like. Which is always appreciated being a chef. It's nice to still have a local, family run butcher shop like this around. They are few and far between these days. And Mark S. should have his head examined for giving it a one star review because he had to go "out of his way to walk there on a Saturday afternoon" and couldn't read a sign on the window. Oh the horror!
google avatar

Maciel G.

Yelp
Love this place! People here are always helpful and the men behind the counter are kind of funny. Every visit to nyc we stop there get some cold cuts, cheese, bread and walk down to Sara Roosevelt park over Bowery st. on Kristie st. sit there watch people do, kids play and enjoy our tasty options.
google avatar

Yelp
Thank goodness we have this family run business in the neighborhood. It remains one of the few originals left in the city -- best prices and kindest people. Lovely granddaughter and grandfather duo!!

karen t.

Yelp
Found this small butcher shop while on a stroll but it was closed and decided to revisit. Well, today was the day! Dropped by and was pleasantly greeted by Moe through the window. He is absolutely adorable and his granddaughter Jen (who sliced us up some center cut chops) was a delight! Most importantly, fried up the chops at home and they are absolutely delicious! Totally different from what I have ever purchased from local markets and butchers. This place is a gem and is definitely worth the visit, for the meat and for the butchers!
google avatar

Howard L.

Yelp
This is definitely a diamond in the rough for butchers. It's almost a last of its kind which makes it all the more special. I was randomly walking around Nolita and saw this place. We walked in and while it definitely does not look like the most appealing butcher inside, we still asked Moe for a two cuts of the ribeye. He's an awesome guy. I asked him what the hell "Home of the Gotcha Steaks" meant and he said because once you try it, it's gonna get you. Lol awesome. Most importantly, when I cooked this at home... Damn, these steaks were delicious. I am definitely looking forward to going back here.

Andrew H.

Yelp
I had a weird request for a meat cut for a friend's birthday weekend that I could keep fresh on ice in a canoe for 24+ hours then cook over unpredictable campfire heat. Jen didn't miss a beat. She gave me the perfect cut and it was definitely not as pricey as I was expecting, either. I also learned a lot about the store, its history and legacy, and more from her. You owe it to yourself to trust in this place!

Danielle P.

Yelp
The best quality meats and such an iconic NY shop. Jen goes above and beyond to get the meat you want and always with a smile! I stopped buying meat from anywhere else once I started buying it from Albanese - the quality and taste just can't compare.

Maddison D.

Yelp
I moved to the neighborhood recently and found this butcher shop. Amazing product and Jen provides amazing service, I would recommend this place to anyone I know.

Russell B.

Yelp
Fantastic! Awesome family owned shop where they take the time to make sure you have exactly what you need. Fantastic quality and very good prices. Couldn't recommend more!

Hal G.

Yelp
Really great meat. Definitely one of the best steaks I've ever eaten and way better than anything I've gotten from the chain markets in the area. Moe, the butcher, is 94 and has clearly mastered his craft. There aren't too many authentic places downtown with this kind of quality. I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

Wenhan Z.

Yelp
Can't believe such a nice place has so little reviews. Great people, great meat. We bought the famous "I got cha" steak, some flank. Grandpa still got his move, and his granddaughter recently joined the butcher shop. One of the nicest and brightest younger butcher! Great experience.
google avatar

Cinthia T.

Yelp
I went there for ground beef and they ground it for me while I was waiting. Very friendly. Great neighborhood butcher. Looking forward to go back for my Ribeye.

Miky F.

Yelp
I was in Little Italy when my wife called and asked for me to buy some milk feed veal. She wanted to make some veal parmigiana and told me multiple times to make sure that is tender. Not knowing where to go, I asked a few Italian shops and they all told me to go to Moe on Elizabeth St. I googled and since the reviews where high I gave it a chance. When I walked in this shop it felt that I am back in Sicily, in a old fashion butcher shop. Sure enough grandpa Moe was watching his apprentice, niece Jen to make sure she cuts the veal properly. She did a terrific job an because the veal looked so good I bought more than my wife requested. When I got home my I was told that I bought more than is needed. Once we started eating the veal my wife changed her tune and she said that it was the best veal she ever had. The following day my son came with his fiancée and they had some leftover veal. They liked it so much that they had my wife call the shop to tell Jen how tender the veal was. This is a butcher shop that got me of a client for life.

Jerome S.

Yelp
Stop by, its more a museum than anything else now. Moe is friendly but getting up there in age. Not much meat left.

Jennifer H.

Yelp
This place is the last of the areas original butchers. Moe is right out of central casting. Support this place because once it's gone there will be nothing like it in this neighborhood again.
