"Albona Ristorante Istriano is closing at the end of the year, marking the end of San Francisco’s only restaurant specializing in the cuisine of Istria, a peninsula currently shared by Slovenia, Croatia, and Italy. Albona opened in 1988 and joins other longtime North Beach restaurants like Caffe Roma and Caffe Delucchi in closing." - Janelle Bitker

Sam, the owner and head chef, was very welcoming and friendly. He described, in great detail, the sauerkraut stuffed pork and how it was prepared. I ended up ordering this dish and believe it is now one of my favorite dishes. We also had a baked pasta dish which was quite nice but no where near the pork. The beet tartare and stuffed pepper appetizers were solid, peppers were definitely my favorite. The beets had a horseradish component but it was a bit overpowering. Apple strudel with vanilla ice cream was our dessert, quite good. Overall the service was excellent and the high quality of food means I'll definitely recommend this to friends and family and will be back again!

Amazing restaurant! The food was unbelievable and service was impeccable. The chef greeted us and took our order before cooking our dinner. Everything we ordered so so flavorful and gave us the wow factor. Can't wait to return to San Francisco so we can visit again.

We made reservations online. We arrived a bit early as parking in the neighborhood can be difficult. There's a 2 hour limit until 9pm Monday through Saturday. We did see the mermaid driving around. They were able to seat us quickly. The waiter did everything, acting as host, waiting on tables. There was one assistant but needed to get instructions from the waiter the entire time. Service is super slow. We sat for over 15 minutes before our order was taken. There was only 5 other tables there when we were seated. We got a pear salad to split and an order of gnocchi. I honestly think the appetizer was better than our entree. After we finished dinner it was another 30 minutes before we got our check. Dinner for take 2 hours because the service and food coming out of the kitchen was very slow.

Our waiter was fabulous! This a small gem hidden in a huge city, I feel lucky to have found it. The food was very delicious and perfectly cooked. When I come back to San Fran I would love to come back and try the rabbit! Well worth it😀

Food is always fantastic and the staff are lovely. Family favorite, good for either a small group or slightly larger. Staff has the ability to make you feel taken care of and not overly solitious at the same time...has a sense of old world elegance yet relaxed at the same time. Have never had a bad meal or a bad dish.

Everything was fantastic. There were 5 of us 3 adults and 2 children. We each ordered something different and sampled each one. I especially liked the chicken with cherry sauce. It is a small place holding about 40 people... Fresh flowers on the white linen tablecloths. A very special friendly place to enjoy great food.

Our favorite restaurant in the City! It's like being transported to Istria for outstanding food and European-style service. The stuffed squid appetizer is amazing - an explosion of flavors - but having eating my way through the menu twice over the past few years, I can safely say you can't go wrong with anything here! The wine list is short, but has excellent selections to pair with your dinner.

An amazing experience on a quiet side street in North Beach. Old world and old school in all the right ways. Unobtrusive and friendly service, by people who know great food and value hospitality. Wonderful salad, had a braised pork entree, several glasses of wine from a large list, and delicious desserts.
