My friend and I visited Alchemilla today for a three course lunch accompanied by a glass of wine. The restaurant certainly had character, being set in a former Victorian coach house (a carriage or coaching house) that had sat unused for around 100–150 years before being renovated into this restaurant. The atmosphere was pleasant, though it lacked a real “wow” factor.
The meal was well presented, and the waiting staff took time to explain the ingredients of each dish, although this delivery came across as somewhat robotic rather than engaging. The menu consisted of small plates, which were ample overall, but some dishes contained too many flavours, making them overpowering rather than balanced.
We enjoyed the experience and found it a pleasant way to spend a Saturday afternoon. However, we didn’t feel it offered good value for money and, unfortunately, it didn’t leave a lasting impression. While it’s definitely worth a visit, it’s not somewhere we would choose to return to again. 12% gratuity is a little steep too.
