Michelin Releases Its 2020 Guide to the Nordic Region | Eater

"A recently opened, theatrically driven 'holistic dining experience' that was awarded two Michelin stars after quickly going viral for its inventive and polarizing presentations; it serves a lengthy '50 impressions' tasting that lasts three to five hours and includes provocative elements such as foie gras presented in a severed-head prop, edible components made to resemble squeezes of paint, and the 'Tongue Kiss' course that invites diners to lick a topping off a realistic human-tongue model — an approach that delighted some guests, grossed out others, and prompted the restaurant to warn that it isn't suitable for business dinners or first dates." - Jaya Saxena

First visit. Incredible drink and small plate menu. Can’t say enough about the Italian ciabatta sandwich, the duck wings and the Bird For Bird cocktail. But truly everything was phenomenal. Absolutely will visit again

First time visitor - stopped in because I love their sister restaurant The Walrus Room. Overall vibe was great, wasn't super crowded which was good given they do not work off reservations more of a first come first serve style. Initial service was good, drinks and water were brought out within a reasonable time frame. Order some shareables, focaccia, beef kabobs, and fries. Food was delicious! Sadly, we cut our visit short. When our server came back around I asked for a drink, a margarita with a splash of chambord. Waited, and waited, by this time my water glass is empty and so is my husbands. She came back around a few times not noticing the empty water glasses and obviously forgot about my drink. It wasn't busy, because I could see her at the bar from my table. Finally got the check and did let her know she forgot my drink so we were wrapping up. Things happen but this is your job.

Service was incredible. Setting is very nice- romantic lighting and comfortable seating. Food was great! Would recommend if you like a bit of an upscale experience paired with a fine cocktail.

Omg! Great night out with the girly- amazing crafted cocktails- had the special which was grill octopus, with Yukon potatoes, a pepper tempura( don't remember which) 😅 and also ordered some oysters- can not go wrong for a nice evening out!!!

Google
Insanely delicious options for happy hour! High quality oysters and mussels and wishing we had ordered more! Looking forward to trying Bad Alice now that I know they are affiliated with Alchemist!

Popped in for a quick drink while bar hopping and ended up staying longer than planned! The bartender was super friendly, we had a great conversation and got some excellent drink suggestions. Even got to sample a rare bitter, which was a fun surprise. Great vibes, great experience.

Alchemist. They are true modern age Alchemists! Transfiguring high quality dishes to a state of Gold, and designing unique cocktails into magical potions! Seat yourself and enjoy!

Google
Took my daughter here for food and drinks. We have been here several times in the past and enjoyed the vibe at the bar. The food tonite was amazing as usual but the service was lacking. The well bartender acknowledged us with a “what can I get you to drink?” Drinks were great as usual but we just couldn’t get past the lack of care in the service. The bar staff talked to each other while patrons other than ourselves had empty drinks in front of them. I think they were training a new hire and most of the attention went to that. The new hire finished her shift and sat at the bar and the bartenders paid attention to her very much like the old bartenders paid to their guests in the past. The manager didn’t seem to notice. Very sad to see. Next time we will opt for a table.

Yelp
I liked everything about our visit. We only had drinks, so I cannot speak for the food. The ambience is great, not too loud but enough vibe that you felt like you were out for fun. We sat at the bar. Our bartender was great, attentive even though he was working hard. I started with the Galloping in Guatemala, very good-lime, cucumber and gin. My husband had the Baptized by Fire, a fancy old-fashioned. He liked it enough. Then I had the Smoke & Embers, a smokey tequila old-fashioned with a hint of spice. That one I really loved! We had dinner reservations elsewhere but I would like to try some of their small plates. What we saw nearby looked very appetizing.

Yelp
What a fun night. Driven by this place many times but didn't try it until we found out they offered oysters. Just missed happy hour but still reasonable oyster prices. Had two types, PEI and Washington state. Well prepared. Had planned a tapas night - thought that's all they had - but they had burger and fries too. Nice options for non-alcoholic drinks as well - always good to shoot that out!

Yelp
The crab cakes are amazing. Loved the celery root purée and arugula. This is a trendy and vibrant little bar and restaurant in downtown Geneva. Super friendly bartenders. Kevin was amazing!!! The bartenders were experimenting with making new drinks and we got to try a concoction. Extensive cocktail and wine menu. It's a lovely place for a drink and meal. We enjoyed our visit here. If you are looking for an upbeat place to get a personalized dining experience in Geneva, make sure to stop by this one!

Yelp
Always a super fun place to visit. From the drinks to the menu items, the Alchemist hs never disappointed. 5/5: The service is always great with helpful suggestions being made. The first time we went we sid off menu items.. a drink roulette suggested by our server, which was a ton of fun. Between us all I want to say we had 9 "mystery" drink orders. And all were very tasty. And the drinks continouly prove to change with the menu rotations. As well as being strong. 4/5: The food is also full of flavor and delicious. The octopus was fork tender and the foccocia was light with a nice outter layer. The food prices werent bad for the area, but it is more of a small bites kinda option. Still had a lot of flavor and was enjoyable. 4.5/5: The ambiance of the place was dimly lit, more intimate and very cozy. The first time we went was with a large party of about 14 people. I wouldnt recommend that unless you have reservations as this place is very small, but it was also accomodating. The other times ive been it was a smaller group and we had no issues getting seated. Overall I would recommend giving this place a try esp if you're a cocktail kind of person... and if you're not a fan of what they have to offer, see what they can do for you off menu or when the next seasonal menu gets rotated in.

Yelp
Get the Rosé Sangria!!!! Best I've ever had, and our bartender happily shared his secret with us. This bar is a gem and I can't wait to go back when I have time for more than just a quick drink!

Yelp
Such a cute and fun cocktail bar! They serve some food, but we just came in for a drink after lunch. Our server was friendly and attentive. He offered suggestions on what to get when I had questions. The drink menu has a little bit of everything! Anyone can find something to match their mood. I got some sort of lavender drink and it was absolutely delicious. Wish we had time for more! There are a row of small tables across from the bar. A small entrance are, and a little outside patio. This is a terrific place to meet up for a drink (or drinks) before or after a day spent shopping in the area!

Yelp
The food and drinks were amazing. I loved that Gabriel and Yoshi are so passionate about their creations and took time to explain some of the processes. The espresso martini was one of a kind and delicious. I only wish they had a bigger food menu.

Yelp
I really hate it when you discover an amazing place, and want to tell everybody, but then you risk it becoming busy, ha ha... that's the case with Alchemist. It's cozy and small, fancy and relaxing. The service is super-attentive and the cocktails, my God, the cocktails! I have never been to a bar in the Chicagoland area that serves a genuine Gin Fizz (see pic), as it takes at least three minutes of shaking to achieve that spectacular egg white cloud. But yes, Alchemist has it. I also think these were some of the best (East coast) oysters I've ever had, and during happy hour? -- $2/ea. If eating 15 of em' is wrong, then I don't wanna' be right! Chicago's premium food offerings are a bit far to enjoy often, so I'm grateful this place exists in a lovely, *local* part of Geneva. It helps us Northwest suburbanites get our fill of amazing drinks and food more often.

Yelp
One of the best dining and drinking experiences I've had in a long time. Drinks were amazing; food was outstanding and our bartender Kevin was great. He made great recommendations on food and drinks. Watched in awe as he crafted our drinks and other drinks. Can't wait to go back! Recommend sitting at the bar! The bartenders are such a great resource!

Yelp
Today My Wife and I went to Geneva Illinois and walked up and down third Street a very nice family friendly area with shops and restaurants. We chose to stop into the alchemist for some appetizers and wine. It was a 80° day , very sunny ! First the service was great where immediately met sat and within a few moments given some water and asked if we'd like a drink. My Wife had a generous poor of a Cabernet that she likes very much. The server was prompt but not overbearing. We ordered three appetizers, the Burrata, the humus and kebabs. The burrata was soft and very flavorful laid on arugula very good. The hummus was filled with Kalamata olives, different spices with crisp pita very good! And finally, we ordered kebabs. They were small but very flavorful with a cream sauce that was amazing on all the meal was great and we really enjoyed our time there Atmosphere was perfect five stars!

Yelp
This location used to be a wine shop. They turned it into a beautiful restaurant. Love the colors and the bar area is welcoming. I ordered the crab cakes, which were delicious. Our server was so sweet. My only issue with the restaurant is the seating. We changed tables two times. The sun was so bright and the curtains did not do anything to block the sun. I pulled out my sunglasses at first but that is when we switched tables.

Yelp
Went for a business lunch and the grilled octopus & kimchi fried rice did not disappoint. The place was pretty quiet & service was quick as there were only 2 other patrons.

Yelp
Alchemist got us hooked. Very good vibes, great food to share, awesome drinks. They do not take reservations but we got lucky to sit right away on Saturday mid afternoon. Their plates are shareable and this is definitely our best way to try at least few plates at on visit. Their wine list is quite interesting and they also cary some craft beers selections. The drinks however are amazing and we are only looking to come back again. We tried few dishes and they were Ahi Tuna Crudo--very fresh and citrusy with added pesto Grilled Oysters--Rockefeller style, absolutely delicious Fried White Anchovies--very nice idea to have them fried like fries and served with aioli , they were a subtle reminder of Spain and tapas. Grilled Salsa Macha Shrimp--this dish was super good, served with great home made sourdough. Very satisfying and perfect pairing with the wine. Will see you soon!!

Yelp
Tried this place for a quick lunch prior to getting back to work. Not bad! Ambience is modern and inviting. Service was pretty prompt. Tried the arancini and the kabobs. The arancini were very fresh, had sauce and cheese - pretty tasty. The kabobs - 5 small ones - were interesting. Freshly made, with yogurt type sauce. Nice presentation. Pricing reasonable. Parking free in front! Would recommend.

Yelp
The food was mediocre at best. I had the burger which was nothing special, the carmelized onions being the only flavor. My friend had the tandoori chicken wrap which she said lacked in flavor as well. I had the tiny little lemon drop and she had the white sangria. Just okay. Outdoor chairs were not comfortable. Service was great. One and done.

Yelp
Lovely spot in beautiful Geneva. Nice patio, fantastic service, good food, perfect portions, excellent drinks. The only reason I removed one star was the coconut shrimp was a tad overcooked and under seasoned, wonderful experience over all!
google avatar

Dan R.

Yelp
Beautiful space in this Geneva bar. We had a mixed experience. This place projected a high end vibe yet fell short with some aspects of professionalism. The small amount of food we ordered was quite good. Small but fresh oysters. We were traveling through this area, so we're not sure of the local level of awesomeness. It is worth a try, just be wary of the service. It ranges from pro to amateur hour. Iron out some staffing kinks and it's a sure winner.

Yelp
Maybe one of the best restaurants in Chicago area. All day happy hour Tuesday had amazing wine and daiquiri and priced well overall. All the food we got was so amazing, especially the ricotta, chicken quality in Shwarma, focaccia consistency, and bread pudding. Waiter was attentive and the decor was really cute.

Yelp
This is the spot to go if you're looking for unique cocktails ! They have a full list of different cocktails and of course have the classics as well . They have a menus of small plates which are great for sharing . The space is on the smaller side but has a great vibe . They have patio seating in the summer and the patio is pretty spacious . The service was quick, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the menu . Only complaint is it is definitely pricey but - I thought worth it !

Yelp
We were at Geneva and decided to try out Alchemist for lunch. When walking in, the place looks like a modernized speakeasy place (of course, it is a cocktail and wine bar!). It has a large bar area with seatings along the windows. We didn't order drinks but looking at the cocktail menu, there are some interesting options. We asked the staff if there's any Gluten Free options, and he was patiently pointing out items that can be easily modified. The food menu is mostly tapas style. We ordered a few to try. The foods were presented nicely, and most importantly they introduced all five basics tastes - sweet, salty, sour, umami and a little bitter, so making each bites interesting. Give this place a try when you are in Geneva!
google avatar

Yelp
The Alchemist covers all the bases--great service, cool vibe, and Exceptional (yes, with a capital "E") food quality. It's a small bites place and we had big appetites, so we were a little concerned. Each dish--oysters, ahi tuna, shrimp, octopus--was perfectly balanced and plated well. Our server had spot-on choices for wine and drink pairings. While we found this place when we were rolling through downtown Geneva, it's one of those spots that deserves a special night out with friends or as a couple. The prices didn't break the bank, but know you will ring up a pretty impressive tab because you won't want to leave this place until you've run deep into the menu.

Yelp
Fantastic craft cocktails. Really inventive and so chill. I had the A New Day in Dublin and Postcards from Jalisco. Both equally delicious.
google avatar

Brena E.

Yelp
This is a quaint with a nice atmosphere. A friend and I came for dinner and enjoy the cocktails and the food. The server was great about making recommendations. We tried a variety of items that they brought at varying times since it was tapas style. One of our items didn't come until we were long done with everything else though. We asked the server and she said she was waiting to bring it because our table was full. That's fine, but it definitely seems like they forgot about it. By the time that last item came, we were pretty full and didn't really get to enjoy it. They were willing to split the check, which is always appreciated.

Yelp
Walking in, the place is small and intimate, Great place for a date night, probably not good for large groups. The drink menu is extensive, you can find something you'll love easily, the bartenders are really nice and easy to talk to if you feel lost with which drink to get (this is what I did). My friends and I ordered a cheese platter which was phenomenal, they do have food items but we didn't get any. Their drink menu changes seasonally so I will definitely be returning!
google avatar

Yelp
So fun! Great unique cocktails and happy hour specials. The service was great- good recommendations. I really like the vibe here. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I've been a fan of The Alchemist restaurant but today's visit was just a disappointment. I brought my dear friend to celebrate her birthday, and we were the first and only guests there and seated immediately since the place was empty at the time of the opening. I ordered a half dozen west coast oysters but got a dozen of a mix of west and east coast oysters. When I asked the waiter why they brought me more than I ordered I was told they come in dozens. He didn't say a word when I was ordering these oysters and the price $21 for a half dozen is pointed in the menu . Ok, furthermore. It is Tuesday so it's suppose to be the whole day "happy hour" as its been stated on their website, their FB page and in a big sign by the entrance to the restaurant. Nope! Nada! No luck for us. They charged me full regular price. Don't fall for their " happy hours" deals. To be fair I have to say the food was tasty and the drinks were decent. It's a pity that I can't recommend the restaurant to my friends anymore.
google avatar

Madonna M.

Yelp
The food was ok, nothing special for the prices. What really stands out is the mediocre service. Our waiter last Friday was not attentive at all. He hardly came around, pretty non existent the entire time. I specifically asked for something and he never brought it or followed up with me about it. First and last time I think there were so many places around and the downtown area is so cute. Choose something else!
google avatar

Deana D.

Yelp
Love their cocktails and appreciate the kindness of the bartenders/staff - it is a must try if you haven't already!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for an appetizer and some drinks. Sat in the patio. Great service. Ordered the beef kabobs and the potatoes. Both delicious. Perfect for 2-3 people. Ordered the Pina Colada and the Rob Roy for drinks.
google avatar

Greg A.

Yelp
Looked really neat with the front door wide open on Sunday 8/25/24. We'd planned on meeting family. Could not get a reservation the day before and the place was clearly under renovation with not a person on site.:)
google avatar

Chrissy W.

Yelp
Met with a friend at this quaint lounge after work. I felt transported back in time after stepping behind the curtain. It has an vintage feel with a modern edge. Their drink offerings are delicious and unique. I ordered the cocktail "Under Scrutiny" and it didn't disappoint. Flavors of violet and lemon stood out. The kabobs were mouthwatering and enhanced only further by the garlic chimmichurri yogurt. Check out this gem as it truly is one of a kind!
google avatar

Olga C.

Yelp
Amazing vibe, killer drinks (extensive menu), elevated food, fantastic service. Will definitely be back to try more drinks. Fantastic spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome craft cocktail bar in Geneva. Great selection of all base liquors in very unique drinks! Like the classics, the bartenders also have those covered. We sat at the bar with Josh helping us and he did great! Patrick assisted on a couple and also knocked it out of the park. Only downside is they are a little pricey but I feel for a handcrafted cocktail it's still a good value! Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Becca L.

Yelp
Initially stopped by just for a cocktail while waiting for dinner reservations. The hostess was so friendly and sat us quickly. We actually had our server, Gabe, at a different establishment months ago and were so pleased to have him again. He has such a passion for the cocktails. The food was incredible and was packed with so much flavor. We quickly canceled our dinner reservations to stay at the Alchemist longer. We will definitely be back
google avatar

Criselle C.

Yelp
Back again. It was busy on a Saturday night. But we were able to get seated at a table in less than 10 minutes. Server was friendly. I liked the music playing that night. As usual, Patrick made us some great cocktails: margarita, espresso martini, and something with whiskey (so delicious). We tried the grilled octopus, an appetizer with raw ahi tuna in cones (a bit tiny haha) and the filet mignon. We also had the deconstructed cheesecake for dessert. We always try something new on the menu when we visit.

Suna D.

Yelp
Amazing food! We tried this place while waiting on a different restaurant. We got appetizers. They have the best food. Both dishes were amazing! I'm turkish, I'm very familiar to kebab dish. But this thing was so perfect. They know what they are doing. We went to the other restaurant after our visit to alchemist and regretted that immediately. we wish we didnt leave alchemist and eat entries there. So we will definitely be back.
google avatar

Vince A.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place for an after dinner cocktail. Cool vibe. Innovative list of cocktails but the standards are available and a huge list of premium tequila and bourbon. Range of ages in the place - it was a good place to drink.

Deborah G.

Yelp
Our first time trying this place. We stopped for an appetizer and drink. We had the oysters, then some charcuterie and finally shared the lamb chops. Everything was delicious. So fresh and tasty. And our sweet server Aly was amazing. So attentive and friendly. We would definitely recommend this place and plan to return soon.
google avatar

Layla D.

Yelp
We needed a place like this in the Tricity! Great ambiance, lovely service. This is the place to be for a date or just a meet up for a drink or two with a friend! Love this stunning place!
google avatar

Nataliya Z.

Yelp
Excellent new restaurant with an extensive cocktails and wines list. The portions are quite generous for a tapas restaurant. I highly recommend grilled octopus and croquettes. Absolutely delicious! The outstanding service completed the great evening experience! I will definitely be back soon! Well done!
google avatar

Matt H.

Yelp
Really nice bartenders and really good food. A nice change up in Geneva, and worth a shot. If you can't get into the other restaurants. Even if you can, still worthy of your dinner choice.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
You couldn't pick a better place to meet for a drink with some sophistication. Went here recently to meet someone for drinks. I was drinking mocktails, and when my partner showed up and tasted mine, we were both drinking just mocktails the rest of the night. Fantastic atmosphere, great handcrafted drinks, friendly staff. Can't ask for much more.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
Great ambiance. Good energy. Our server was professional. The place is well-run. Broad variety of small plates including some dishes that less-adventurous people may consider to be too bold. But we liked it all. Beautiful plating. Took me a few tries to find a cocktail that suited my taste profile (many of the drinks are sweeter then I prefer) but the cocktail menu is deep enough for everyone to find something that suits them.
google avatar

David O.

Yelp
Great food and even better cocktails. Service is friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Atmosphere is cozy and comfortable.

Brittny H.

Yelp
Great Ambiance , Drinks are unique and different - Service was good for how busy they get! Make sure you come with ready to spend money
google avatar

Conrad L.

Yelp
Im sure this place has good food and drink but fyi this is NOT a bar that can accommodate a large group gathering. Not really a standing around and socializing type environment. Make sure to have a reservation with exact numbers. Expect a sit down type restaurant. The waitress and manager got too stressed out to think of how to accommodate some additional friends who showed up. Our group closed out and went to Saint Charles where our tab was well
google avatar

Kandice R.

Yelp
Stop what you are doing and go here NOW! Fun drinks, amazing atmosphere and even better company. Patrick and Nick make this place even better with their knowledge of drinks/liquor and their banter to boot! They are fun the chat with and their imagination is free to run wild in this amazing spot! Service is too notch and you find a more unique place around.

S M.

Yelp
It's a cute, very small, nice decor with bistro tables, bar & outside tables. The bathroom was really nice too! We were there for lunch for tapas- the coconut shrimp was delicious, especially the dipping sauce! The octopus was good, but very pricey. Though the octopus was grilled nicely & very, very fresh & easy to slice, not rubbery or tough.
