12 Wonderful DFW Wine Bars

"Aside from the impressive wine list and warm staff, patrons can also indulge in a craft beer or cup of coffee. Laid-back vibes and friendly faces keep the seats full at this neighborhood favorite (and they have some of the best iced coffee in town)." - Courtney E. Smith, Lauren Coe

The Alcove is one of our favorite spots in Dallas. We visit regularly for both wine and coffee. We recently hosted our engagement party here and it worked out great. Excellent service and vibes. Mark, the bartender, was very welcoming and friendly to all our guests. For those who don't drink wine, they also have great beers on tap. Love this place!

Google
Great little dive wine bar ! The bartender was really nice and everyone was really nice and clearly regulars. It’s a cute community of people. We went for Mahjong Monday which happens every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. It was so fun and very casual. Overall enjoyed !

Uptown’s hidden gem! Best cold brew I’ve had in Dallas. The homemade pastries and tacos are amazing and fresh. Perfect place to sit outside and people watch. The inside could use a refresh, but that’s part of the charm.

This is a shady business. The previous coffee shop here has been a staple of the neighborhood and was pulled up seemingly overnight with very little notice to the previous business that occupied this spot. Only to have the Alcove kick them out to open their own shop. This is NOT the same coffee shop the bar seems to be claiming it is. This is NOT a renovation. This is NOT a reopening. This is what stealing business looks like. Letting another business build clientele and rapport over nearly 10 and trying to steal it out from under them is a spineless move This is a business with a complete lack of integrity. Take your business elsewhere in the neighborhood.

Google
We had my bridal shower here on a Friday evening in August at 7:30pm and the owner let use most of the seating area inside. We invited 40 and only about half showed up, typical! Phil the owner was very accommodating and allowed for us to bring our own food and drinks. All we had to do is spend $250 and not bring pizza, since that is what they specialized in. We preordered the wine bottles and ordered 5 pizzas when we got there. The pizza was absolutely delicious! The only problem was they only had limited ingredients, pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms and giardiniera. We had to order cheese and mushrooms for the non-pork eaters. Luiz, the bartender was so awesome and very down to earth. The other owner, Jason seemed like he got a little annoyed with us at one point. Parking is limited in the street but there is a parking garage in the back for residents in the area. The bar in located near lots of residences so there were lots of locals. During the day they have coffee until 3pm, reminds me of Central Perk from Friends 😁

Google
Unprofessionally run. I will never come back here after their horrific treatment of the State Street Coffee team, mandating they vacate so quickly, imperiling their business while telling customers the Alcove is simply “renovating”. Our memory is long and our crew of folks will never come back.

Google
bartender was rude - we were turned away at the door with no explanation and told that they were closed. it was around 12 am and the hours stated open til 2, and there were customers being served inside.

Genesis Matos

Google
The bar tender is the rudest guy I have ever met. Upon entering, the bar tender Mark was not very welcoming, and seemed as if he was sort of making fun of me with his everyday guests. Everything was okay from there because I sat outside for a little bit, but then I returned inside to complete some school work. Upon certain guests coming in, he then began closing every blind and all things down in our faces. When the customers stated that the place closes at 12am online, he then said that sometimes they close way earlier and that they weren’t ordering anything anyways???? Are you kidding me? Then the customers stated that they did not like his service and that they were going to complain. Mark kept responding okay over and over again extremely nonchalantly, and acted like he didn’t give two damns who’s business he is destroying, because at the end of the day, he still gets his little paycheck for treating people like that. It’s extremely disappointing, because I live outside of Dallas and this was the first coffee+wine shop I come to try…and that is the experience the owner wants customers to have? No thanks. Next…

Yelp
I really had a great time at The Alcove. I came in the morning to get some work done with coffee. I love the free refills on drip coffee. It really keeps me on my productivity streak. Staff is also super welcoming! I'll definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Came here for a morning coffee and it was so horribly sweet you couldn't taste the coffee. Barista wasn't the nicest so I didn't want to ask for a refund. Emailed the company/owner and never got a response. I would highly suggest trying one of the greater options in the area! :)

Yelp
Last time I went, my husband and I asked for a house glass of red wine. They said they didn't have any, so we just asked for a basic red that could be comparable. After we drank them and asked for the check, we discovered that they had given us each a $35 glass of wine. That's a $70 check before any tip. Clearly, they just wanted to make money and take advantage of us. Especially for two young people who could not afford it at the time. I also just heard that they are kicking State Street Coffee out of their space with little notice and no explanation. That was the best part about the Alcove. Photos included of how they are mocking State Street Coffee on social media, by simply saying "oops". It's honestly just sad.

Yelp
A great place to grab a coffee and a snack. However the ownership has cause me to think differently about frequenting this establishment. State Street Coffee was a great coffee shop inside the Alcove with awesome service for 10 years. The Alcove recently decided to force State Street out of the Alcove without even a notice. They figured they make more money if they opened their own coffee shop. Totally get they want to make more money but at the expense of other people, who were good to you. Putting people out of jobs. Placing your wants above all others. Umm I'll pass on whatever you have to offer in ur future life. I prefer to support people who care about others.

Yelp
last I came in here I mentioned State Street coffee (they used to operate out of this location per an agreement with the owner) and then I had to sit through a barrage of crap talk about State Street. It was like they wouldn't be happy until I changed my mind and admitted State Street was bad (which I would never do bc it was one of the best coffee shops in the state). I hate giving bad reviews to local places, but the food here was genuinely bad and I hated that they spent so much effort talking trash about other local businesses. Skip this place.

Yelp
Rather than improve their poor business, they have removed State Street Coffee and are now attempting to impersonate it. State Street Coffee is no longer there. It has not been renovated. It is not reopened.

Kathleen H.

Yelp
The service here is always incredible!! I'm usually here whenever Chris or Kaitlin are working and they're so much fun. the ambiance is chill, casual, and everyone ends up mingling and getting along well! late night tip - if you're wanting some food, their pizza is SO GOOD!

Yelp
We came from parliament and it was night and day. You can hear each other talk here. Not crowded but still had a good amount of people. The bar was full though. They had sports on in the background and I liked that. Their wine selection has decent selections. I ended up with Riesling and loved it! Prices are reasonable

Lauren P.

Yelp
I've been going to the Alcove for years - had many memories of great days working with coffee and nights with girlfriends - even had my first date with my husband there! The service used to be unmatched, but has unfortunately declined the last couple of times we've visited. It was hard to get a smile or honestly even a word out of the bartender. I also just received an e-mail that State Street Coffee is closing - SUPER BUMMED to hear this, as it is our favorite place for coffee in Dallas. Mike is the best and the baristas always treat you like family! If anyone is looking for a GREAT cup of coffee, a cozy place to work, and great service, try one of his other places - La Reunion in Bishop Arts or Triumphs in the design district, you won't regret it!

Yelp
Love the vibe of this place! Super calm, and a great selection of beers, wines, ciders, and seltzers (like literally any type of brand and flavor you could imagine)! They have comfy seating inside (couches), bar seating, and tables inside and outside. I also noticed various card games behind the bar that you could maybe check out. The bartender was extremely attentive and kind. She kept checking on us to see if we were okay and if we needed anything. This is a great place if you're looking for a chill, not too crowded vibe with fairly priced drinks! P.S. if you love sweet drinks like me that taste more like juice than alcohol , you HAVE TO try the draft Ace cider tasted like bubbly pear juice, so yum! And only $5!!
google avatar

Yelp
This is the perfect place to have a chill, laid back night with friends, a first date, or even by yourself! The wine selection is large and every glass I've tried has been tasteful, aromatic, and enjoyable. They also have a few dining options, of which I would highly recommend the mozzarella sticks and pizza (with everything on it). This bar has a great environment that's always full of friendly people, good music, and lots of fun all around.

Eric T.

Yelp
Great local spot in State Thomas. Laid back vibe, a rotating set of taps with lots of local flavor. Always a must stop after work.
google avatar

Douglas H.

Yelp
Pizza is sub par and wine is often old. I'd suggest to check out Parterre if you're wanting better options.

Mac P.

Yelp
I am SO confused. What happened to State Street Coffee? I visited Dallas last year, and I was so happy to stumble upon the cutest gem while walking around the neighborhood. When I came back to Dallas this past week, I realized the name changed? And the coffee was crap. Come back State Street!!
google avatar

Melanie M.

Yelp
Lovely spot to grab a coffee and do work, socialize, or relax and read for an afternoon! They were out of breakfast tacos by the time I got there around 11am, but the donut was delicious. Coffee was great. Staff was so nice, and the coffee came fast! They have a little bowl of candy, which was a nice treat. Ample seating with comfy chairs and plenary of outlets. Highly recommend

Hunter B.

Yelp
Love alcove! My neighborhood spot!!! I mainly go at night. It they have a good coffee shop in the mornings !

Julie G.

Yelp
This place is the perfect neighborhood wine bar. Tons of wine and beer options and good food too! Chris is a fantastic bartender and always so fun to talk to and he's very attentive. Great location and so cozy. Love this place!

Samantha G.

Yelp
Been in the neighborhood since 2014. The only reason this place has any good reviews is solely because of State Streer Coffee. The Alcove has nothing good to offer in terms of offering or service now to top if off, they kicked State Street Coffee out with no explanation to not only the owners of State Street but the neighborhood as well. They removed a staple in our sweet little neighborhood that will never be able to be replaced. The way the ownership treats its employees, the neighborhood, their equipment and space is appalling. Can't wait for this place to finally run itself into the ground and get replaced with something we, State-Thomas neighborhood, deserve and want.

Courtney C.

Yelp
The Cheers environment that will always welcome you. Service is top notch, personable, with the bonus of humourous. Plus, the pizza is probably the best in uptown.
google avatar

Nerak D.

Yelp
Delicious coffee. Period. Great staff and wonderful ambiance. During a rainy Saturday morning, I stopped by this cute place to get a coffee and I was not expecting such a nice treat. Next time you are at State Thomas, take some time to enjoy a cup of your favorite pick me up drink.

Jean D.

Yelp
Great welcoming neighborhood spot. Nice wines, great beer selection. Have been coming here for years and always love the place and the people!

Yelp
Absolutely the best dirty chai latte I've ever had. They didn't have a drink menu that I could see, so I just had to take a chance and order whatever I could think of. My boyfriend had the cold brew, which was a little fruity, but still very tasty. They really know what they're doing here, and they are so incredibly friendly. Also, their food is delicious. The blueberry muffin was moist and we couldn't get enough. The only con I can think of is their use of plastic. Switching to compostable cups or even glasses when guests don't take their drinks to go would make a big difference. However this is true for most of the country. :)

Tony M.

Yelp
Outstanding atmosphere, lot of locals and interaction. If new to area or bar don't be shy, we all look after each other. Initially we stood back and then met people who introduced us to others and now great friendships. Chris, Jason and Katlyn will ensure You are served and welcomed.

Bradley C.

Yelp
This bar is only into regulars. The wine selection is mediocre at best. None of the bartenders are friendly unless you're a regular. One bartender in particular, bearded Hispanic, is overtly rude if you are not a regular.
google avatar

Alba R.

Yelp
Brent is awful. His bartending manners are minimal. The guy barely acknowledges you when you walk in and seems inconvenienced. This establishment needs to hire welcoming and competent workers. Do yourself a favor and avoid this location when he's "bartending"
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
Amazing wine selection and a fun family of friends! Meghan is awesome and knows her wine and makes excellent suggestions. Highly recommend! Sometimes you wanna go, where everybody knows your name......
google avatar

Andrea J.

Yelp
Cute little corner bar with good service, a good wine selection, and cute small outdoor patio. Get there early if you want a seat outside on a nice day, as there are only 4-5 tables out front. Inside has a small bar and a cute, cozy seating section. If you're hungry, I suggest you skip the pizza here. To me, it was cold and flavorless. But I don't think people come here for the food.

Yelp
I rarely ever leave reviews of establishments, but in this instance I feel that I absolutely must. Last night my husband and I went to have a glass of wine at The Alcove. We live in State Thomas and the wine bar is just down the street. The entire experience was terrible. It was unclear where to order and when I went inside to order, the atmosphere and folks at the bar were ICY COLD, VERY unwelcoming. Everyone knew each other's names which is awesome, but if they didn't know you, you might as well be invisible. They acted inconvenienced and annoyed when I tried to order. Then the bartender asked for my ID and she proceeded to scrutinize it and check the name also on my credit card. That's fine but I'm 33, not sure why the intense scrutiny. After I ordered they took their time getting the drinks as I awkwardly stood there waiting. How does this place stay in business? Please, just be kind to people... is that too much to ask? I'm so disappointed because I wished that it was a good experience because this place has so much amazing potential!!! To the owner(s) of The Alcove, if you consider yourselves a neighborhood bar then maybe try to be welcoming to folks other than your "Cheers crew." I feel embarrassed for you all and how you run your business. I know you've certainly not gained my business or my family or friends.

Yelp
I discovered The Alcove pretty recently. I did not have a high expectation as I thought this is just another casual cafe where I can also get a glass of wines. On my surprise, though, this place turned out to be great, not so much with the fancy setting but due to its atmosphere, selection, and people. As I enter through the door, I am greeted with the bar in front and the sitting place on my right. The Alcove is not huge, but the place seems like a great place to hang out with your friends or make new friends. While this place serves coffees, I would not visit this place so much as a cafe place but rather a place to cheer with the wines and your friends. And wine selections are numerous, and the bartenders are generally friendly as well as the people around you. One downside of this place is that, just like any other bars and restaurants in the uptown area, it is so hard to find the parking place nearbys. Other than that, I would recommend this place as a good place to chill with your pals and loved ones.
google avatar

Sammo C.

Yelp
If you live in uptown and haven't made it to the alcove for a glass of wine on a random evening you should. This is totally a neighborhood feel. I was there on a tuesday, it was quiet but everyone I talked with was so amazing and have been coming for years. I almost don't want to leave it a review to keep that local feeling but also, it deserves one. The bartender was super helpful when I was needing recommendations on wines. And actually the one we referred has become a favorite at the house. This isn't like a fancy place but it is a great place to relax and unwind! Keep it up.
google avatar

Ryan E.

Yelp
We went for happy hour yesterday night and was very pleased with the experience! The outside patio is dog friendly and the happy hour drink specials were inexpensive, with both house wine and cocktail options. The indoor seating also had a very relaxed feeling. There weren't any happy hour food options that I could find, and the charcuterie board was definitely not worth the full price, but if you are going for a drink after a long day of work this is definitely the place to go.

Tyler W.

Yelp
A friend and I came on a Sunday afternoon to drink coffee and talk. Once 3pm came up, the bartender put on the Rangers game at a noise level that interrupted our conversation. When we asked if the game could be turned down to a level that would allow for us to continue our conversation, the bartender ignored the request, and put on Pearl Jam at a noise level that made working or talking impossible, forcing us out. If you like heavy rock and stonewalling staff with your coffee and wine bar, Alcove is the place for you. If you want a comfortable place to drink and talk with friends, Alcove may not be your vibe
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
I stayed all day here (in the morning it's State Street Coffee, in the afternoon it becomes Alcove) and moved inside to get a break from the heat. When I sat down and the bartender brought over a beer and wine list, I told that I'm good. He then proceeded to get incredible offended and explain to me that "this is a business", implying that I should buy something. When I explained to him that I had been there all day and had spent money, he curtly placed the menu on my table and told me to go to the bar to order something. What the hell? I guess I could've been a bit short at the beginning because I was distracted, but definitely did not deserve that response. I'm sober and have been for a while so I don't mind bars especially when I just need to get work done, but I don't think it's polite to bully someone into ordering a drink. I guess they have food, but I thought spent $20 on breakfast food and coffee and tea already would be enough? It was completely unnecessary and really turned me off to the place. I love State Street Coffee and their amazing staff, but I won't be recommending the Alcove as a date night/game watching spot to my friends (who would love to buy a drink) anymore.

Jacquelyn S.

Yelp
Extremely rude and racist establishment. My friend went there to meet me on Sunday and she was going to get coffee or tea. She asked the place if they had coffee and the short white guy said they only serve wine and beer. When she continued to ask do you have anything else and wifi he Rudely said you can't just be here and not order. She came to be a paying customer as the place literally says espresso bar... then he says no coffee when clearly there is a coffee bar in the establishment. Do not support this place that was so rude and unprofessional and not supportive Bexuase someone was asking fair questions about the menu and what the site says. She was was trying to order when the guy kicked her out. I would love to speak with a manager - however their phone doesn't work. Also, update your website if you don't have coffee or be willing to be a decent human being.

Jessica M.

Yelp
all of it. Stinks, don't do it. They will over serve you and not care about how you get home. I felt taken advantage of.

Yelp
What a great little place! My boyfriend and I came here on a Saturday afternoon to try their coffee, since a friend of mine had given me a gift card to State Street Coffee. It wasn't clear to me if that was the same thing as The Alcove wine bar, but when we got there they explained that the Alcove and State Street are in fact two separate businesses sharing a space (although State Street Coffee doesn't have a Yelp page, they do share that). I ordered an iced latte and my boyfriend ordered an iced tea. Both were delicious. The barista was super friendly, and while they don't really have a menu, they're open to making almost anything you want to drink. The space itself is very cozy, lots of comfortable arm chairs and couches. I could see relaxing here with a glass of wine during happy hour, and also coming to sip a cup of coffee and get some work done (in fact, several folks were there on their laptops). It's a great space, friendly staff, yummy drinks...what else could you ask for?

Brad T.

Yelp
The staff is very unprofessional and seems very inconvenienced you are there (unless you are a regular). I think the bar tenders name was Chris? He bragged about being very high and we observed him going to the bar next door to do shots while leaving the Alcove patrons unattended too. We asked about ordering food and he rolled his eyes and ignored us. Don't waste your time here. Many other better options in this area.

Yelp
Quick look rating: 5/5 Service. The Alcove is a cute little romantic place, it's off the beaten path and nice place to have in your regular places to check out! Came in here the other night to get a growler filled for a good buddy's birthday who was just down the street. The service was top notch, next to me at the bar was a cute couple having a glass of wine and sharing a cheese board which look very appealing, and is on my list to try next time here. I loved that folks out front were enjoying each others company, have a glass of wine and some sitting with their pups. The place also had outside water dishes for the pups, love that! They had a great selection of wines and beers! The folks were nice enough to make sure your growler's are washed out prior to filling without having to be asked. *To note: Monday night is discount night, half price on growler fills. Guy's better bookmark this place, it is a nice place to bring your female friend and have a great conversation and share some wine or bubbly!

Ashley H.

Yelp
I came in on a Sunday afternoon/evening for a drink before meeting friends and it didn't look like anyone was behind the bar. The bartender was lounging in the couches with his buddies and was not pleasant when he came to take my order. I got one drink and left.

adel a.

Yelp
Came here for just a few drinks. They have 2 containers of chili for customers by the door. The person who was at the counter (who I assume is the owner but I'm not sure--he had a big mustache) went to taste the chili to check if it was hot. He placed his spoon in the container of chili, put it in his mouth.....then used the same spoon (that he just put in his mouth), put it in the second container of chili and put it in his mouth. I don't know about you, but I just think that's gross. At least get a new spoon.

Yelp
Casual gathering with guest bartender where tips go towards charity. Hanging with coworkers and learning about wine while snacking on pizza and goldfish. Definitely worth a repeat visit. Street parking sucks but there's a parking garage that's a short walk away.
google avatar

Tony N.

Yelp
Very nice spot. Perfect for outdoor seating. Great wine and friendly staff. Brought my parents and had a fabulous time. Definitely recommended.

Yelp
I honestly wish I made it to uptown more than I do because of this place. Came here with my husband and another couple on a Friday night. From what I gathered, this place lives by my life motto as a 30 year old working mother... "coffee till cocktails".... it's a small, casual lounge with a coffee bar to your left and a beer/wine bar when you walk in. There were lounge chairs with cute led tables that change colors ...goes perfectly with the dim lighting and chill atmosphere. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir recommended by the bartender and a cheese plate (common practice of mine at any place that offers it)...I tend to be a cheese snob so the cheese plate was kind of generic I thought, but this place is perfectly casual so the fact that it wasn't extensive fits. For the record: I still DEMOLISHED the cheese plate :). I very much enjoyed our stop here! I see a few "moms nights" here in my future.

Yelp
Visited Saturday, Aug 11. This was the first visit for my husband and me. We finished lunch and wanted to find a new coffee/tea shop. Pros: Super friendly staff, great coffee Cons: Interior decorating could use some sprucing up. Worst chai tea latte I've ever had.
google avatar

Brenda M.

Yelp
It's affectionately known as the "Cheers" of Uptown, and it was clear that as long as everybody knows your name, you love the place. I did not. I was a stranger. Street parking was scarce and the stainless steel bar top felt as cold as the atmosphere. If a regular invited me back, I'd go because I LOVE a good glass of wine.

Jim J.

Yelp
I stopped in this place with some friends a couple of days ago. Cool place, dog-friendly patio, great wine selection. The only drawback, and it's a big drawback, was the person behind the bar. When he wasn't going next door to do shots, he was rude, unattentive, combative and dismissive...several of the regulars saw my frustration and told me not to take it personally, that he is an asshole to everyone. This guy (Brett?) apparently works Tuesdays and Thursdays and is truly an awful person...avoid those nights. Any other night of the week, I'd probably give this place 4-5 stars...rude and incompetent employees can destroy an otherwise charming place.

Yelp
The Alcove is a nice, cozy space to come chill with friends or have a laid back date. The bar service is friendly and quick, and the server will help you narrow down your options if you're not sure what to get. I came here solo to get some late night work done since it was one of the only places open, and I'm so glad i stumbled across it! I ordered a glass of wine and sat at one of the tables outside to start working. They have WiFi which was really convenient for me working on my iPad. I'll definitely be back whether it's for a work break, meeting, or just to grab a late night drink in a relaxing atmosphere. It also wasn't crowded on a Saturday night, so if you need your space like I do, then you'll love this place.
