"Edgewater’s favorite longstanding establishment has been in business since 1960. Breakfast skillets, half-pound burgers, freshly-squeezed orange juice, and Grecian specials like the Kayana — an egg scramble with sautéed onions, tomatoes, and feta cheese — are all on offer here. Like any good neighborhood spot, Alexander’s won’t let patrons down. A second location opened in December in Jeri’s Grill’s former spot." - Samantha Nelson, Eater Staff

"Here is an old-school diner in the classic manner, with a long counter and vinyl stools that probably haven’t changed in the past 60 years. The menu still lists pancakes, omelets, burgers, shakes, and a section of “Grecian specials,” and the place is still family-owned, by the Mizhquiris, whose patriarch, Luis, began working in the diner in the ’80s and took over in 2019." - aimee.levitt, Eater Staff

I just wanted to share with you about our recent visit to Alexander's restaurant for breakfast. The staff there were incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. The service was prompt, with our drinks and food served quickly. The portions were generous - our plates were so full that we couldn't finish everything! We also noticed that if you order coffee, the staff are happy to keep refilling your cup. The bill was quite reasonable, and overall we had a great experience. I would definitely recommend this place to others.

Google
What a great diner! Exploring the neighborhood and I read good things about this place so I had to check it out. So good!! Busy but not crazy busy, sat at the counter, which is always fun. The food was delicious and did not take long to get. The ladies behind the counter are very friendly! Definitely going to be my go to breakfast place from now on!!

Pretty chill place to grab breakfast and a nice conversation. The food was delicious and the service was quite pleasant.

Just moved to the neighborhood and I’ve already become a regular… It’s hard to want to go anywhere else when the food is great, the service is always on point, and the staff is top notch! The croissant sandwich is my go-to and the side of crispy hash browns is perfection!

Alexander's is a smaller, cozy home-like diner with good food and great value. My boyfriend and I stopped in on a Saturday around 3:30pm craving a much-needed breakfast / brunch style meal (thank goodness they are open until 4:00pm!) Even half an hour before closing there was a pretty solid amount of customers - Seems like it might be a regular haunt of the neighborhood. California and Mexican Skillets were wonderful - the only issue being the salsa and tortillas that were listed were not included with the latter - but after asking our waitress she fixed the issue and gave us them extra in addition to a side of pancakes. Very solid place with a relaxing diner vibe (sitting near the kitchen and hearing sizzling and cooking pans while sipping coffee was such a morning ASMR feeling). The restaurant also has a (very) small parking lot in the back with free parking for customers - and street parking is available otherwise. Overall good place for breakfast and lunch dishes.

One man show! Ordered only two biscuits and got charged for four; yet they didn't offer the extra gravy. Scrambled eggs were a small portion. Overall okay! Coffee sugar Shaker is a plus! Bacon was perfect!

Google
Very classic diner, excellent food and good service. The potato pancakes are a must-have! I enjoyed the milkshake as well.

Google
Clean diner, warm and polite service, good coffee and a great fresh blt and fries. The bread was nicely toasted, tomato was flavorful and fresh, and the bacon was crispy and tasty. Fries were good too, crispy on the outside and freshly made. Well done guys!

Yelp
Their breakfast are very good the staff so nice the place so clean but the problem the parking on the street?

Vivian L.

Yelp
Ended up here because Honeybear is basically impossible to get to but I'm so glad I ended up at Alexander's. Who needs Honeybear cafe and their 1+ hr wait when Alexander's is just a mile down the road and our wait was just 15 mins tops? They have a really great $11.11 deal where you get coffee, juice, pancakes, eggs, hash browns, and a meat of your choice. It's $1 for toppings but I only had 3 slices of strawberries BUT I'm not even mad because I got so much for $11.11. The service was so great and I enjoyed my time there. The music was great and I felt like I had a really nice diner experience. Loved it 10/10

Kevin C.

Yelp
I stopped into this diner because of a recommendation from the shop a few doors down while I waited for them to finish on my car. The food was excellent. I got the $11.11 special in the window and man the pancakes were super fluffy and soft! I thought the bacon was a little too overdone but the sausage was great!! It's a cute diner with a homey no frills feel to it with friendly service. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Alexander's is a hidden gem that I discovered via Yelp. I was randomly searching for a new breakfast place and came across Alexander's. I can attest that the reviews for this place is warranted. The inside of the restaurant is large enough to accommodate multiple groups of four. They also have a lot of solo sitting at the countertop. During my initial visit I went during one of the busiest times in the morning and I didn't have to wait too long to be seated. Even if it is busy the staff are a well oiled machine in which they quickly get the food out, clear tables, and get out the to-go orders. It's impressive to witness because they are very busy. Our waitress was very friendly even though so was swamped with tables. I will say that due to Alexander's being so busy the staff has to wear many hats. Our waitress towards the end of our dining experience had to be flagged down to get our bill because she was wrapping silverware. I commend the staff for staying positive instead of getting frustrated. The pancakes are really tasty. I normally don't like a lot of pancakes from diners but they were surprisingly tasty. They didn't feel like pre-frozen pancakes. The skillet was jam packed with meat. At first I thought it was light on meat until I lifted the egg and realized the meat had mostly shifted to one side. The quality of the skillet wasn't anything to phone home about but they give you enough food to easily have two meals. I really liked the homemade orange juice, it was fresh tasting.

Yelp
My family and I (4 people) dined here on a Saturday morning. We waited ~10 minutes for a table to open up, so it does get busy. If you're looking for a quick solo bite, there was faster availability at the counter. I wouldn't say it's good for groups though, the booth was tight for 4 people and if I recall correctly, there's nothing much bigger than 4. The food itself was just okay, nothing special that would make me pick this place over somewhere else. A few issues with food: 1) 2 out of 2 hash brown orders were not at all crispy, very under 2) My reuben sandwich had very little sauerkraut on it, which was the primary reason for ordering it 3) My mom's spinach omelette had egg shells in it Overall, the kitchen seemed pretty frantic; it took us a while to get our food and it felt like they were just trying to get through orders quickly, hence some of the issues above with our food. Two upsides here though: 1) Most of the portions are pretty large, especially the plates that include any type of side. We ended up taking about 40% of our food home. 2) Service was good - waitress was attentive and managed order changes well I hope that this experience was just a reflection of a busy day/potential understaffing and it's not a bad option if you're just looking for a meal, but I likely wouldn't go out of my way to come back again in the future.

Yelp
Good and quick. We got in quick by sitting at the counter. I went with the special, potato pancakes, 2 eggs and bacon. It was a large plate of food and tasted good! Service was quick at the counter.

Gladys C.

Yelp
This is my first time eating at this restaurant and I definitely recommend. The portions are large so be prepared to eat or put some away for later. We ordered via food delivery and my child got the pancakes and bacon. We got a side of hash brown potatoes and a build your own skillet with some raisin toast. Again the portions were enough for 2-3 people to eat off the skillet with seconds on the side of potatoes. The food was delicious and we recommend this restaurant.

Charlie C.

Yelp
Very courteous staff. Family owned establishment. Clean diner feel. Got a skillet w some modifications, they made it right and it was delicious

Denisha B.

Yelp
It's okay. Not as good as the first time I ordered which was disappointing. I've ordered from here via delivery and it's been excellent. Their croissant breakfast sandwiches served with hash browns are on point! I've even ordered their omelette along with French toast and pancakes and they have been stellar. My order today was mediocre. My hash browns weren't fresh, omelette was decent and pancakes had a strange texture to them. I ended up eating my omelette and throwing away the remainder of the food. Maybe they had a off day. I would willing to give it another chance to see if it's better.

Yelp
I freaking LOVE Reuben sandwiches. LOVE. Tried one here. So good. Came out quickly, and made me very, very happy. Perfect proportions of kraut to meat AND 1000 island dressing. Buttery rye and gooey Swiss cheese. It was not one of those overdone, giant sandwiches that make you feel bloated after eating. This one was a nice size, but not too big - I am not a fan of overstuffed American plates. Comes with a pickle and a slice of tomato, just so you can get some plant matter in ya. BUT that Reuben! It was yummy. My BF had a Patty Melt, and it was also very tasty - done to order, medium rare. The stand out, though, was the Lentil soup! Usually lentil soup can be bland, but this was not! Slightly tangy, and a good sized bowl. I'd come back just for this. Fantastic, friendly staff. Said their food was made with love, and it shows. Simple interior, somewhat threadbare, but spotlessly clean and with a lot of character. Bathrooms spotlessly clean. Nice touch of a hand washing sink outside the toilet room - I always like that. Am anxiously awaiting their new outpost on Montrose, as it's closer to me. YAY! Will be back, though!

Yelp
Want to give a shout out to the little hidden gem here in Edgewater. Food is great, service is great, and prices are great. My partner and I come in here about once a month and we are never disappointed.

Chloe T.

Yelp
Hello I'm just trying to get a hold of someone to let you know that you have birds flying around inside of your restaurant!! I would hate for them to ruin such a new nice place!

Snark A.

Yelp
LOVE this diner! Busy on the weekends, but worth a short wait. Food and service are outstanding. Places like this are disappearing in Chicago, unfortunately. Alexander's also has another great location on Western (they took over the old Jeri's Grill, which was another of my favorites). The menu is extensive, so I never get tired of coming here.

Emily B.

Yelp
We (family of 6) came to Chicago for a family vacation in Mid March 2024. One morning we found this absolute GEM of a restaurant. AMAZING food, very quick (5-10 mins for 6 people with a full house), great price ($100 for 6). Family owned, so great ambiance. Totally recommend!

AnaMaria M.

Yelp
They are Fantastic. I had a tres leches waffles that was so good. My cousin had a 3 brothers breakfast burrito I thought was the bomb and my other cousin had I can't remember but it was so good. We then shared lox and bagels. This Restaurant has everything you can imagine and we definitely enjoyed all of our food today. We recommend it totally

Bobby G.

Yelp
Great diner! Good food, clean. Great staff!!! Plenty of parking I had plenty items on the menu. All were good!!

Dr. Tiller W.

Yelp
Excellent neighborhood spot. The food is well executed and diverse. The service was very attentive and informed, and everything is SO CLEAN! I strongly recommend eating here.

Aggie H.

Yelp
I would've given 4 or 5 stars a year ago but lately it's been disappointing. Service is attentive and friendly but kind of a mess. The waitress said soup didn't come with hubby's hot sandwich. Then later when I ordered another hot sandwich to go, she asked what kind of soup I wanted saying it is included. So she brought his soup and even an extra for me, but still. Then there was confusion over which hot sandwich I ordered to go. Staff couldn't seem to get it straight. Soup was great, but the hot sandwich and patty melt were meh. Roast beef gravy was weird; kind of sweet with a hint of idk cinnamon? Meatloaf had the same weird gravy. Mashed potatoes were bland. Patty melt was nicely toasted but small, overcooked and mostly flavorless. Just a few partially grilled onions on it. Woman at the next table asked for mayo on her burger but instead got a thick slather of butter. Cook mistook butter for mayo. Not good. Worst of all...the place wasn't too busy but we waited over 1 hour for 2 sandwiches. Really not good. This might all be b/c the top staff are busy at the new location, but they'd better straighten it out or the mainstay customers like us will find a new favorite diner.

John P.

Yelp
Just a great, no thrills diner. Make sure you get their skillets with the hash browns well done.

Lee R.

Yelp
The Big Breakfast is a great deal. I had 3 scrambled eggs, bacon crispy & not burnt, 2 pancakes, tomato juice, & coffee. Plus hash browns ! Polite service . A real diner & very nostalgic place.

Diana K.

Yelp
Great place to be a regular. We love the unpretentious vibe and solid brunch fare!! Classic diner.

Jenafur S.

Yelp
Ordered via UberEats. Paid for priority delivery and food still arrived ice cold. Meatloaf entrée was very reminiscent of what was served in my 3rd grade school cafeteria. Disgusting and will NEVER order from this place again. Yucko!

Zachary S.

Yelp
This is a perfect classic diner that is bound to leave you satisfied. The staff is friendly and the service is speedy. I got a chorizo skillet that was only something like $12; not only was it hot and delicious, it came with a side of pancakes too! Hot coffee was on the house. Look no further and go eat here.

Sean C.

Yelp
If you're looking for an old-school, cozy Chicago diner, this is the spot. I pretty much only eat breakfast at diners, and they serve it up at Alexander's! Don't miss the all day every day breakfast special that's listed in a window. The real star of the show for me is the pancakes. They come with your breakfast and are the thinner, chewier kind, not the overly thick, too-fluffy kind. Super tasty and budget friendly too.

Allen H.

Yelp
What a gem we discovered this morning. Service and the food on point. We're coming back tomorrow. The ham served with breakfast was real no water added patty.

Martha O.

Yelp
I would attach a photo of what was on my food once I poured some A-1 on it. I went with a friend here for the first time. I am sorry to say that though the food may be delicious according to comments, I had a hard time eating it even after they replaced it with a fresh plate. Whatever came out of the bottle of A1 was not small it was larger then a quarter, it appeared to be meat of some sort. I thought they would offer to make it right ,but I was wrong, not even get an apology. She stated that she would give me a fresh bottle of A1. Bad experience not made right. I cannot be a B...ch and so I said nothing and nothing was done about it. I guess my complaint is not really about the food but the way it was handled. Management .What If I got sick from whatever was in that bottle.?

Sue P.

Yelp
The food is unbelievably great and service is very professional and attentive! The specials are very unusual and the vegan choices are delicious!!!

Cristy M.

Yelp
I went here with friends after helping them move into a new apartment in Edgewater. When you come in, you can sit wherever you want and the place wasn't packed at all on a Monday during brunch hours. I know what you're thinking, wow--how basic can you get with that order? But I believe that if you can get the basics right like pancakes and eggs, you can do anything! The pancakes are on par with IHOP and absolutely delicious. Not too fluffy where it feels like you're eating air and not too flat where you'd have more fun with eating the plate itself. The eggs were also delicious. My friends got an omelette and after trying theirs, I regret not taking a photo. All in all, this is a great place to see some friendly faces and catch a good bite to eat. If I lived in Edgewater, I'd be there constantly and become a regular.

Dayana M.

Yelp
Waffles for life only here !! Love this place if I'm feeling blue, I know that a delicious soup is waiting for me

Rachel K.

Yelp
Food is good but servers so rude and not nice. Even if I call the waiter, he never comes. I don't know why he acted that way because I'm Asian?! I've never had such a bad experience in my life.

Patrick J.

Yelp
This is a simple restaurant in the 1960's in Chicago. It has a simple menu with really good food. They serve regular coffee not bitter but stylish coffee. I had the gyro and it was very good and I am a fan of gyros so I pay attention. I also had a slice of cherry pie with strawberry ice cream. In this area not many places have fruit pie anymore. It is a small corner restaurant where most seats are against the windows. The service was friendly and I saw the breakfast specials. If I had not had a taste for gyros I would have pounced on one of the all day breakfasts.

Saray C.

Yelp
0 stars if I could! Walked in to place a carry out, wasn't even welcomed. I stood there standing waiting for someone to approach me and NOT ONE waitress or guy in the cashier said anything. Asked for a menu n was given to me in a rude manner. Some lady got mad because I asked if I can place my order with her and rolled her eyes saying "I can put your order in whatever" and when the food came out ,it wasn't even Handed to me it was bagged n put to the side. I should of walked out within 3min of me standing waiting to even get greeted. Avoid this place at all cost! They are only welcoming to their regulars. Food was cold and disgusting worst $25 of food

Eva S.

Yelp
We ordered three things. Everything was super bland and we found hairs in two of the dishes. I'll post a pic of one. I had a soggy Belgian waffle, barely cooked on the inside as well. Not impressed.

Marjorie D.

Yelp
A hug you can eat! The food is fresh & tasty, portions are good, prices are reasonable, and your coffee cup never runs dry. Service is fantastic, and I've been seeing the same employees there for years - which is an endorsement in itself. Alexander's is a cozy spot with a long neighborhood history and many regulars, run by kind people serving up classic diner dishes prepared well. This is a REAL place - not a theme-park "diner concept" developed by marketing executives. Spots like these are harder and harder to find - treasure this gem!

January J.

Yelp
This place can get pretty busy, but that's just a testament to how good it is. We ordered the tuna sandwich, kids spaghetti, and steak and eggs; all was delicious and big portion sizes. The steak was a good size for the price and cooked to order. Def will be going again

Pablo C.

Yelp
Simple place, friendly. Nothing fancy. Just regular good breakfast food. I'm a regular. It's perfect for me. Always friendly staff .

Bernard D.

Yelp
The service is Pleasant and the food is a nice quantity with fresh food and the pancakes were really good. I have returned since my original visit.

Mike P.

Yelp
We really like this spot for breakfast. It's quaint and dineresque which we like. There is a counter too. Very nice wait staff. Always helpful. Theresa is a waitress who goes out of her way to converse and to build relationships when you are a return customer. $10.50 - three eggs, toast or two pancakes, juice, potatoes and meat choice served with coffee. Great value. I have also had the hash and omelets. My wife likes good diner coffee. You get it here. I'm a brewed iced tea guy - fountain not brewed here, so just note. Coke products if you have the Coke/Pepsi internal struggle. We like this place. Our goal is to be regulars. Try it.

Brenda W.

Yelp
They are a great family restaurant where the staff always greet people with a wonderful smile. You are made to feel like you are having home cooked meals. The food is very good and fresh. I have eaten there for years and never had a bad meal.

Lisa S.

Yelp
As far as breakfasts go, I've had much better for the same price. I ordered the Ladies Skillet and was very disappointed by the food I received. There were only a few pieces of chicken in the meal and the eggs were also lacking. For $13 I would expect more. I wanted to like this restaurant, as it's right down the street from my work, but I will be sticking with my previous go-to breakfast spot.

James P.

Yelp
I had the junior club sandwich which was good. I also ordered the daily soup, minestrone. It tasted like water, mixed with a lot of other ingredients where they hoped there would be flavor at the end of the process. Others that ordered from them had the same comments. The entrees were good, but the soup had no flavor.

Marquuta J.

Yelp
Ordered from Alexander's again. They always deliver on the taste, quality and speed of service every time I order. This is diner food but a step above most diners. The potatoes are cooked just right, the eggs are never overcooked and I love their fresh squeezed orange juice. Delivery, as I said before, is ridiculously fast which means the food is still piping hot. I ate it so fast because it is so good.

Lisa T.

Yelp
This is a little cozy restaurant, hospitality was amazing and very people friendly. Old school services meaning they care about people and their services no matter who you are. Good food outstanding cooks, put a lot of love in the food.

Bobby S.

Yelp
Alexander's is an amazing local diner! They serve all day breakfast that's affordable and more importantly filling and delicious. I get the veggie skillet - and it comes with pancakes. My wife gets the 2/2/2 which is just the right amount of food. The staff are all super friendly, hardworking, and welcoming -- it's the type of place you can relax and feel like your part of the community. Check 'em out!

Mark W.

Yelp
Alexander's is by far one of the Best Family Diners in Chicago ! Very clean and very affordable and the food is outstanding ! I've been coming here for over 30 years and Highly recommend it !!! I just had a pork chop dinner and it was cooked to perfection ! So whether it's breakfast lunch or dinner you will leave totally satisfied and you'll be back ! I guarantee it ! , mARK

Kici C.

Yelp
Genuinely confused as to why this place has so many stars. I was in Edgewater today with my roommate looking for a little brunch to soak up our hangover. We were going to Sauce and Bread Kitchen until we realized they didn't have many options. Walked up the street to Alexander's because the reviews seemed like the place was amazing. Maybe it's the OCD in me but the restaurant isn't clean. It's a diner style place but this place has a special kind of grunge. Our silverware was dirty (luckily I carry plasticware) which is a real turn off. I could also see into the kitchen and the practices didn't seem to clean. I tricked through however and ordered a steak skillet. The food came in about 15. First thing I notice was sliced American cheese under my eggs. Really? Ugh! The food itself was...idk. Could've been better. Steak was a little tough. I just think I'm hard to please but at the same time...come on. It's like a dirtier, less tasty version of Waffle House.

Delaney H.

Yelp
great little hole in the wall place for breakfast. I had the breakfast sandwich and it was very tasty. My friend had the chicken fried steak- he always get it and it was filled with flavor and super juicy!! Cooked perfectly. OH & THE BREAKFAST POTATOES .... AHHHMAZINGGG. It was pretty busy so I would suggest coming in the early morning of middle of the day because during peak hours it's going to be a wait. the servers are literally amazing- so nice, and very attentive- filled up my coffee which is always a plus.... who doesn't like coffee. come here you won't regret it. super cheap too which is always a plus in Chicago !!!

Jake D.

Yelp
I go to Alexander's on occasion because it's convenient. I've only had breakfast there and it's just so so. Never had anything special. The potatoes are very bland. Frankly terrible hash browns. I like supporting long term local businesses, but you can skip this place and not miss out.

Sarah J.

Yelp
Food was cold. Hair in my eggs. Bread wad moldy. Everyone on there cell phones. Got no help. Save your money and go to McDonald's. Dont give your dog this slop He will get sick.

Victoria R.

Yelp
One of my favorite dinners. Delicious, consistent and friendly environment. Great for pick-up.
