"Steakhouses serve a few purposes: your carnivorous friend is celebrating their birthday, your corporate job is taking you out to a client meal, or maybe your parents are in town and you want to treat them to a fancy meal. All of those are valid, but we would never send you to Alexander’s Steakhouse first. This SoMa meat palace is overpriced even by steakhouse standards, and the meats are tough, dry, and disappointingly cold, regardless of ordering them medium rare. The sides, like the Hokkaido milk bread, creamed spinach, and thin french fries, range from pretty good to average, but the cheesecake is a surprising highlight. Still, you can almost always get a table, the service is great, and the red-lit, leather-boothed interior does make you feel like an extra in American Psycho in an upscale-for-the-'80s way. So, if you find yourself needing a last-minute ribeye with someone who doesn’t want to stray too far from their FiDi hotel, Alexander’s Steakhouse could fit the bill. Food Rundown photo credit: Ricky Rodriguez Hokkaido Milk Bread Fluffy, warm, and served with black sesame and yuzu butters, this bread is actually quite excellent. But at $12, it’s a bit pricey for a few rolls. photo credit: Ricky Rodriguez Creamed Spinach Exactly what the menu promises—spinach cooked down in cream. Not necessary by any means. You should skip. photo credit: Ricky Rodriguez Steak With domestic, dry-aged, Australian wagyu, and Japanese wagyu options, their menu of 13 steaks has plenty of range, but they’re all on the expensive side. Even the most basic steak frites will set you back $65, and the porterhouse will run you $132. We could justify the prices if these steaks were cooked to perfection, juicy, and well-marbled, but they’re not. So, if you find yourself here on your own dime, don’t waste your money and stick to something from the domestic (read: cheaper) side of the menu. photo credit: Ricky Rodriguez Berries Cheesecake We would return solely for this deconstructed cheesecake. It’s an orb that’s coated with a berry outside layer and a berry filling. It’s tart, it’s sweet, and much more than a gimmick." - Ricky Rodriguez

"Here’s a meat-lovers dream feast: Alexander's Steakhouse is bringing back its Prime Rib Family Feast ($475), which serves six to eight people. The meal includes a 7-pound prime rib that’s seasoned and par-cooked, ready to bring to the desired temperature; au jus and horseradish; potatoes; and green beans. Add on a yule log for $65. Orders can be placed online for pick up or delivery on December 23." - Lauren Saria

Awesome place for our anniversary dinner! Quite a spread of delicious food. Elizabeth provided us with excellent and prompt service. Fun cooking your own food on the grill!

Google
Superb! from food to servers. The steak we had were amazing too bad we had to rush for our train but we did packed and bought home no point of throwing that good food. Our server was amazing she took care of us very professionally. I will visit springfield again just for the steak..😎😎

I've been coming here for 35 years, one of my my absolute top 3 favorite steakhouses in the Country. Best serving staff anywhere hands down, Calorie, Jodi and Chris are top notch. Todd, the manager is a.super nice guy and always really fun to talk to. Last time I was in town over Christmas my cousin and I went in and ordered Porterhouse's Todd came over to our table and apologized that his meet cutter had already left and he offered us each 2 T-Bones instead...lol

Google
Always very friendly staff and great food! Some of the best restaurant service in town!! Grill your own or have them grill for you. Excellent skillet cookie!

Jerry Parks

Google
Casual steakhouse, with tasty steaks! Meals come with a salad bar, baked potato, and Texas toast. It offers the unique opportunity to season and cook your own steak (meat), or let their chef do it for you. I loved the salad bar because I could doctor my potato with all the fixings. And their famous skillet cookie was amazing (as you can tell by the empty skillet)! Absolutely wonderful meal!

Google
This was our first visit to Alexander's Steakhouse. I wasn't planning on cooking my steak! My husband and I chose not to, and apparently there's a fee for them to cook our steaks for us? Anyway, I got the top sirloin and it was a little over-seasoned for my taste. I switched with my husband and took his t-bone, which was less charred and less salty. The salad bar was really fresh and the selection was great. The baked potatoes were great, too. My favorite part of the meal was my piece of homemade key lime pie! It was wonderful. Also, the service was top notch. I will be back and I'll be careful to tweak the steak order!

Google
Staff has always been friendly. We usually do not get a reservation, however I would strongly suggest it. It was a very busy night when we went. As always the salad bar is by far one of the best things about the place. It is a simple bar but you can load your plate up with about anything you want on a salad. The dressings are all great also. The steaks are always perfect. We always cook them ourselves but their cooks do a fantastic job also. I will usually chat with them while cooking my steak. Will be back for another dinner.

Google
This is husbands favorite Steak House, so much we go at least 10 times a year and we live in STL City 1hour 40 min drive so it doubles as quality time for us with such a log drive it’s definitely worth it, Kate is always our server she is so sweet our last visit one of the owners Craig came out to personally meet us and thanked us for being loyal customers and driving from so far away but we thanked him for having such good service and food. 😊

Bob V.

Yelp
The food was good and you can even cook your own steak if you like. There is a nice salad bar and the waite staff is pleasant. It is kinda smokey because they grill with charcoal right in the dining room and if you are sensitive it will probably not be good for you.

Kevin N.

Yelp
We had a reservation on New years later in the evening. I was concerned that the food or staff quality would suffer do to the long day I'm sure they all had.. boy was I wrong. This was the best steak I've ever had. The waitress was busting her butt and was on top of everything. I dont remember her name maybe Terri. Amazing job all around.

Llenay T.

Yelp
This was my visit to Alexander's Steakhouse and I really enjoyed it. I came to Springfield, Illinois for a family vacation and my sister and really enjoyed It. The friendly staff was great and the service was excellent. Elizabeth took care of all of our needs. We cooked our own food and really enjoyed the experience. I'll be back for more. The establishment was clean and is great for casual dining or an intimate setting. Don't let this review decide for for visit Alexander's Steakhouse for yourself. I give Alexander's "two thumbs-up" for their service and selection.

Yelp
OMG !!! My family & I are currently here for my husband's birthday & the atmosphere is great ! This is BOTH of our 1st time & we MOST DEFINITELY will be returning !

Yelp
This place has really gone downhill. Last time we went at opening time the lettuce at the salad bar was dripping with moisture. We just stared at it and the waitress came over and said I would not eat that. It was left over from the day before. She told someone to get brand new lettuce put out but they hadn't yet. Went to try them a second time and called to see if they had their bags of butcher burgers for sale and had them in stock. They said they did. I went to pick them up and was told by the bartender that we don't have any right now to sell and the ones we have we are giving to charity. I drove 20 minutes there after calling to make sure they had them in stock. Bartender didn't care. No apology. Nothing. They didn't care.

Jake J.

Yelp
Steaks are amazing! Even more unique that you have the option to cook it yourself. Highly recommend the teriyaki marinated filet. The salad bar is a perfect compliment as well.

Larry T.

Yelp
Great food. My Steak was cooked to perfection. The service was excellent. All employees I came in contact with were extremely polite and professional. The visual of the grill in plain sight was exciting and created a great sense of anticipation.

Tom G.

Yelp
Where else can you choose your cut of steak and grill it to you liking? Alexander's has been a mainstay for quite a while now, and I've never been disappointed for years. My last time there was my birthday and the steak was amazing and the salad bar awesome. Very good chance I'll be back for my next birthday (I no longer live in Springfield).

Barbara P.

Yelp
Excellent as always. Would recommend to anyone that wants a nice meal. We had the steaks...so good especially my favorite the teriyaki filet. Something you can't find other places.

Terrance W.

Yelp
The Best steak ever!! I eat a lot of streaks.. The streak was very tasty & juicy.. This is my first time here.. The salad bar was yummy! The atmosphere was amazing! The waiter was the bomb!!! The food was definitely an A+ along with the service!!!

Tim T.

Yelp
Had the KC cut. Really disappointed by what I encountered here. The steak had a ton of fat here. Im paying 25-30 $$$ there shouldn't be a steak with a 2 " Fat ring around it and inside it. The steak was also overcooked. Salad bar mediocre. Potatoes werent russet and if it werent for great service by Jo who waited on about 10 tables at once, I would have given 1 star here. Not going back, its overpriced and I dont recommend it. As for Jo, she did a great job and I hope she gets some help as they seem understaffed. I prefer Texas Roadhouse.

Kathy M.

Yelp
Great place to eat. Steaks Chicken etc are excellent plus the best salad bar in Springfield.

Jun-Jun D.

Yelp
My wife and I love Alexanders! *Best steaks and salad bar in town *Service and drinks are hard to beat *Todd, Wade, and team are incredible Jun-Jun and Shawn Dycoco (The fun couple!)

Yelp
On November 4th 2022 it was my Pre -birthday dinner with my friends And family It took to two hours for the food to come to us also out of 10 people three food was hot the rest was cold . So the other family and friends complain to the manger he took of the portion of the meal. The hostess was very rude to us we didn't have a problem paying for how bill it was just how she talk to us. She didnt have to tell my sister to go sit down like dog. Am paying my bill took me she has my name and number and couldnt come back . To this place .

Rick W.

Yelp
I have had a run in twice with the manager (Todd) and vowed I would never eat at Alexanders again. Once my steak got served to someone else and he argued with me and told me I had to pay for it and if I had a problem with it don't tip the waitress !! The second time we had reservations for a certain time on Valentines Day. We had a party of six and the gentleman that was taking us all out made the reservations and was upset that we arrived 15 minutes early and 45 minutes later we were still waiting. We will call the head of our party "Ed", simple name, Ed was upset and questioned Todd about the purpose of making a reservation and Todd "being the hot shot that he thinks he is" told us loudly in front of other customers, that's it, I'm not allowing you to eat here tonight so just leave... so we did and went to Papa Franks and had a wonderful meal. NOW THE GOOD PART : I had gift certificates that I wasn't going to just waste so my wife and I took a dear friend of ours out to the Springfield Alexanders for dinner last Saturday night. We had the most wonderful waitress -Elizabeth-, friendly, made us feel welcome, awesome service, just overall wonderful. I jokingly asked her if Todd had gotten fired yet for his disrespect and rudeness to customers, she of course asked why I would ask such a question so I explained. She brought the acting manager -Tony- over and he apologized over and over and asked how he could make it right on behalf of Alexanders. I told him that wasn't necessary because Elizabeth already did by telling you and you apologizing. The cook even came over and apologized and said he had been working there over 20 years and hates to think that their steak house has customers that wouldn't return. Elizabeth, Tony, and the Chef - Thank you for giving us a reason to return to your Steak House, the food and staff are wonderful, -1 of course - lol Rick & Nancy Williams Springfield, Illinois

Yelp
Out standing food and service, i'm not in to cooking my own steak so I had them Handle that for me, 9oz filet. I will be back.

Chrissy W.

Yelp
Little pricey but it's soooo good! Hubby got the T-Bone, I it the ribeye... cooked perfect! Never been to an indoor grill! Service was pretty good too! If it wasn't so expensive we would be back... will probably still come back but will need to save up

Diana N.

Yelp
This place was yummy. Very casual with a simple menu. Friendly staff and comfortable dining.

Kelvin C.

Yelp
The food was great! The waiter we had was horrible! The service she provided was shit! The pretty young lady that was taking phone calls and busing the tables came and got us refills and our check. This place deserves 5 stars but I can't give that when the service roselda gave was shit! Besides that the food there was excellent and everyone besides our waiter were very nice and friendly. I will be going back but I will not get service from that waiter again. Maybe she was having a bad day but doesn't matter she provided horrible service. But if you want a great steak this is definitely the place to go!!

Trang Q.

Yelp
I like how you have the option to cook the steak yourself or have one of the chef do it. I wish I'd had made my own steak per my steak were a bit on the medium well side vs the medium rare side. The garlic bread were good Texas style and the salad bar has great options to choose from.

Victor R.

Yelp
Nice place to go for a steak and salad. Had a great waitress named (Kelly) who made the experience very memoriable.

Daryl W.

Yelp
For the record, over the past 8 years, I've spent over $10,000 in this place (company dinner reimbursement). I'm a business man that travels, over the years I've eaten at all the Alexander Steakhouse Restaurants. They are all amazing experiences. One of my favorite restaurants to eat steak. However, until this time. I spent $65 on myself for a Porterhouse steak. I asked for medium well done with extra Cajun seasoning.... but what i got was an OVERCOOKED Porterhouse, even the Texas toast was burnt. I told the server, that she was great, and I'm NOT nor want to a jerk about this but this is not edible. She said they can remake it and i sympathize with her... i didn't want her to think i was blaming her and that it was obviously a mistake and not personal. So i took her offer to remake the steak. Next the manager runs to my table without apologizing or any empathy and tells me no, I'm stuck with that steak, they don't take responsibility for their steaks. He was very blunt and forceful like he was expecting me to argue or fight with him about this meal. I told him this is totally dried and overcooked.....THEN HE APOLOGIZED, but said nothing he could do. I totally would have not been offended if the manager showed me respect and empathy... if he did, i would have eaten every bet of that steak and no problem. But the way he made a life long customer feel is sad. They need to teach this manager some manners for a Top Notch Steakhouse in Illinois. Every other Alexander's the service is Outstanding.... Advice for this guy, I'm NOT that disppointed that you wasted my $65, I'm okay with the policy. I'm disppointed that you should me no empathy after driving 2 hours to this place. Finally, I complained to the waiter that gave me great service, she switched and did that same thing. Totally ignored me, gave me the check and said have a great day. Smh... for the record, i was smiling, no loud, but extremely polite and barely said a word. I still love Alexander's Steakhouse but today is totally classless and sad. The other restaurants are golden, but this one in Springfield, IL I would avoid. To prove my point, these places are usually so good that many of the D1 college sports teams take their recruits to these restaurants. I was taken to one when i was recruited out of high school for my D1 scholarship. Because they give recruits an amazing experience! #NoEmpathyClasslessManagement I'm NOT done, im sending my experience about this restaurant all over Illinois. You clowned the wrong person...

Rick T.

Yelp
The steaks are always great here. However, the steak fries were greasy and I couldn't eat them. The waitress didn't offer to take the cost off the bill. I've been going here for over 30 years and I don't believe they ever redecorated the place. The carpet if disgustingly dirty. The restrooms are dilapidated. Spend some money to make the place presentable, because the meals are rather costly to most people!

Brad C.

Yelp
Make your own steak over a fire pit, I get it, catchy, fun, cute. I did it, don't need to do it again. This is why I have a BBQ grill at home. So you know when you are the one that cooks at home and everybody gets a warm plate and just as you are about to sit down to yours somebody needs milk and then somebody drops a fork and then 'while you are up' comes out of somebody's mouth and at the end you are just satisfied to sit at a table everybody is leaving and drink a glass of (now well aerated) red wine? Yeah, the only difference is here they give you a higher than reasonable bill so you can do a spit take with your glass of moderate quality wine. With 2 kids at my table I didn't sit down at all. First salad bar, then they decided they wanted more carrots & cucumbers (which were taken off my plate, not on their plates to begin with). Then I cook the steaks while I am a short order cook of toasted bread for the table and finally put it on the table and everything you want for your potato is at the damn salad bar. So why didn't I tell my kids to do everything and enjoy my meal... because the salad bar is near the open flame and people drinking. Not a good mix with younger kids. It was well more costly than your chain steak place, with the same quality and well over twice the work. If you must go, sit on the left side as you face the salad bar, right side gets most of the grill smoke. Then get on here and validate this rant which is my review.

Tom S.

Yelp
The steak here melts in your mouth. The salad bar has a wide variety of choices, the only problem is you need to save room for the meal. Service is lacking sometimes snd the price is sky high, but cone for the food and you will not regret it.

Fannie S.

Yelp
This was an interesting place.... Pick your own steak, and cook it yourself over their huge flamed broilers! It was pretty awesome. But the prices were astronomical, as well as the portions of their food though. It was a fun one-time experience. Definitely come out smell like smoke! :-)

Madeleine W.

Yelp
went with a group of local friends and was pleasantly surprised. It was NOT overly noisy as most restaurants in the state capital. I liked picking the meat and not having to cook it. The wine list was pleasantly not over priced and the service was excellent. The quality of beef was not prime, but good none the less. I would return and that is the real teat of dining out, will the clients return? I would, enough said

Stan M.

Yelp
The novelty of cooking your own steak is fun but let's address the pricing. The prices on the steaks are par with a Chicago steakhouse. That's where the similarities end. I don't mind spending the coin on steak but if I do I feel it should be worth it. Surf and turf for $50...it tasted no different than Outback. The steak was no different than a TGI Fridays sirloin. If you are going to serve steak, there are two things I'd recommend, either have a higher quality piece of meat or lower the price. The filet was tender but tasted no different than what I'd cook at home. The shrimp cocktail is a joke and I don't recommend it, Golden Coral type, I imagine since I've never been there. The bill for two was $150, easily $50-75 over priced. Change the pricing or change the meat. The atmosphere is family friendly but keep the under 10 at home. I don't think I'll revisit.

Charlotte D.

Yelp
Best steak in a long time. You can grill your own but I left it to the professionals and I'm glad cuz they know what they're doing! Our waitress was awesome and so was the all around experience.

Janet C.

Yelp
Went here for the first time. It seriously is the closest thing I have had to really good fresh quality steak that is unadulterated since I was young. The meat we had then was local and nothing like the mediocre meat that is sold now. This place puts Texas Roadhouse to shame when it comes to the quality and taste of the meat. Makes Texas Roadhouse taste like McDonalds. Don't let the atmosphere deceive you, it's not the most formal set up, a little down home like when you go in, but between wait staff, cleanliness, and food it makes up for it. Prices are a little higher than competitors but if you're looking for great steak that definitely is far better than them Alexander's won't disappoint.

Steve T.

Yelp
Ever since I was little, my family has come here for the very best steaks outside of Chicago. It's impossible to come here and leave feeling anything less than FULL! I always enjoy every aspect of my meal. High quality cuts of meat, excellent salad bar, nice big baked potato, and of course Texas toast! (I'm always baffled why many people bitter the bread before they toast it...that just makes hot buttery bread. Don't they own toasters at home?) I'll always come back here every time I'm back in town!

SHEAVIE w.

Yelp
I loved having dinner here on my birthday. They offer a discount for large groups. Everything was tasty and my steak was cooked perfectly. That doesn't always happen when you order medium/medium well at other places.

matteo h.

Yelp
Lets run the numbers and see what we get: Plus side: You get to pick/cook your steak on a gigantic charcoal grill. You get to watch people act like they are king of the grill. You get to watch the king make a mess out of their steak cause they have no idea what they are doing. Its always fun with a group. hand cut steaks , you can get a good one if you know what to look for. Cons: Salad bar is decrepit Steaks are overpriced service is hit/miss If you want some one to cook your steak it costs you extra Needs new carpet, paint etc... Been coming here forever. Hell I worked here in high school a million years ago...Not much has changed , you pick out a steak and cook it your self on a huge grill. A cook will handle the job for you for a couple bucks. While your steak cooks hit the salad bar. On a side note , the salad bar has not changed one bit since 1984. Baked potatoes and texaz toast are also available if you're so inclined. Steaks are overpriced in my opinion. Fun if you're with a group but there are better steaks to be had in this town...

Rebecca C.

Yelp
While I enjoy steak, I prefer to have more choices. The menu doesn't have a lot to pick from, the prices are high and the salad bar is tiny. The only thing I enjoy at Alexander's is the Texas Toast... and I could just make that at home. (Along with my own steak, if I was in the mood for it.) This is a place that I'm invited to go to (for a family thing) yearly and always wrinkle my nose when that time comes around. I have yet to be in the mood to spend that much money on something so basic.

Alyssa D.

Yelp
Steaks themselves were good. However for the price and having to cook it yourself- I wouldn't go back. Another concern of mine was the potential for cross contamination ... There are no designated tongs for the raw meat versus the ones guests potentially use to flip the toast. It would be nice to see some hand sanitizer on the wall near the grill and more clearly designated "areas" of the grill. All in all, it could be fun for a group to do while enjoying drinks but for most parties I think you will see this place as more of a headache and juggling act.

Reema S.

Yelp
Not the best steakhouse. I was visiting Springfield for the weekend and went here for dinner with a large group. The steak wasn't too bad but I think they are a bit overpriced, especially if you add in upcharge for the chef to cook your steak. I don't really like the idea of cooking my own steak when I'm paying $30 for one. The salad bar we were welcomed to help ourselves to was very small and I was expecting something bigger for the size of the restaurant and the prices. The service was a little slow but at least they were friendly. Even though we had a big group, we had quite a few servers so I figured it wouldn't take as long. I don't think I'd go back unless someone really wanted to try it out.

Tom J.

Yelp
This is a great experience! I bring a group of out-of-towner's once a month. It's always fun to pick out your own steak and grill it but half of my group always defers to the chef's cooking. I've been doing this for ten years and i talk to folks who years later remember the fun we had at our group dinner.

Kate C.

Yelp
Love this place! They have amazing cuts of meat that you can hand pick. Then if you feel like cooking it your self with friends while having a beer, you can. Or you can just have the pros do it for you. I definitely suggest the skillet mushrooms! They are buttery and delicious. The skillet cookie is also a great way to finish your meal. It's always fun for parties or birthday meals.

Buddy P.

Yelp
Went with a group from work for dinner. The place was packed at 6pm on a Mon night. You can cook your own steak if you want; none of us did. Steaks were juicy and tender and very well seasoned. Pretty simple concept. Meat, potato, salad bar.

Jimmie H.

Yelp
Nice place if you're in the mood to cook your own steak. They'll do it for you too if you'd like. A lot of fun for groups too.

Ashley C.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this place! If you know what you're getting into (i.e. cooking your own steak) it's a fun place to go out to eat. ALL YOU CAN EAT TEXAS TOAST! For an additional $2 you can have someone cook your steak for you, but that's really no fun. I went on a Saturday night around 8:30pm and it was pretty dead (which I liked). I'm sure it gets a little hectic around the two available grills when they are busier.

Kevin B.

Yelp
I went here with a very large group of about 100. They did a good job of cooking and serving the meals. The line for the salad bar was very long though.

Greg H.

Yelp
We went there on Sunday night before Labor Day. Had excellent service steaks where good and tender cook to our expectation .

Robyn J.

Yelp
This is one of the best steak places in Spfld. The sauteed mushrooms are the best I've ever had, And the long island iced tea is amazing. Our steaks have always been wonderful. I don't mind paying a little more when the food is so much better. As far as the salad bar, it's small, but who goes there to eat salad anyway?

Laura S.

Yelp
Did not eat the food. Customer service was not acceptable. I planned to purchase a $32 meal and give my child some. They said only if you pay $11 more for the salad bar. My son would not eat salad but they still required the charge per the manager. We asked them to add teriyaki sauce to a kids meal steak for my son. They said no. We call it the no, no, no restaurant. Left and had great service and food at Fritz's Wagon Wheel.

Dick J.

Yelp
Terrible service waited almost an hour and a half for my steak. Waiter forgot I even ordered a steak. Also my child ordered chicken tenders and they came out not fully cooked. Really really over priced. Never again coming to this restaurant

Adam R.

Yelp
I really like this restaurant. I enjoy cooking my own steak without having to light a grill and being able to a cold mug of draft beer while you do it is an added bonus. They have great cuts of meat for a reasonable price. The salad bar is the best I've ever been to. Now you don't have to cook your own steak for $3 they will cook it for you buy I feel like cooking it yourself is part of the experience. Now I would have given 5 stars but the service is terrible like some of the worst I've ever had and I have been to like 3 other Alexander's and this seems to always be the case. I mean they don't really take your order unless you get appetizers and drinks. So really they just need to refill drinks and bring the check at the end. I usually got to the bar to get my drinks and never order one from the server just ask for a water. The last time I went the server could seem to handle giving me the correct change for the $100 bill I gave her. Took four tries and I couldn't tell if she was trying to take extra money from me or she just hadn't passed 1st grade math. And even on the 4th try she was $9.34 off I just wrote it off as her tip and didn't leave any extra. I had a drink spilled on me once and drinks sit at the bar until they got warm. The important thing is you don't really need a server there you get your own steak which you pick out you cook it you grab your potatoe and garlic bread and throw them on the grill too then you go to the bar grab a beer and hope server can do basic math for when the check comes.

Clayton V.

Yelp
An over-priced, lackluster experience. Ordered medium-rare, got medium-well. Sent it back and got raw meat. Will never come here again.
