The Best Restaurants in Jamaica Plain | Eater Boston

"At Alex’s Chimis, there is no wrong order. This Dominican mainstay is a local favorite for its namesake chimis (burgers), orejita (fried pig’s ears), chicharrón (fried pork rinds), flaky pastelitos stuffed with beef or chicken, and a slew of other options. Load up with one of the hefty combo plates for a belly-warming Dominican feast any night of the week." - Terrence Doyle

Where To Eat And Drink In Jamaica Plain

"You hear Alex’s Chimis before you see it, thanks to the guy behind the counter who spends all day taking a giant cleaver to the perfectly roasted chicken at this counter-service spot in Hyde Square. There’s a decent-sized Dominican menu of things like pork ears and chimichurri burgers here, but it’s that chicken that will keep you coming back (and make you want to get a meat cleaver, because man, that looks fun)." - dan secatore

Boston Picnic Guide: Where to Order Great Takeout and Eat It Outdoors | Eater Boston

"What to Eat: Social distancing guidelines dictate that the line is often out the door at this Jamaica Plain Dominican spot. The line was often out the door before social distancing guidelines were instituted, however. Get the the orejita (pig ears) and the rotisserie chicken. Alex’s Chimis has been a mainstay on Centre Street for two decades and is one of the city’s best Dominican restaurants. Where to Eat: The Arnold Arboretum isn’t exactly close to Alex’s Chimis, but it’s worth the time it takes to get there. The signs say “no picnics,” but there’s plenty of woody coverage in the park behind which to hide while you eat those fried pig ears. Just make sure to pick up after yourself. The arboretum is pristine, and littering is, simply put, trash. Less inclined to rule-breaking? Try the Mozart Street Playground, just a couple blocks from the restaurant on Centre Street. How to Order: Official Website [takeout] / DoorDash [takeout/delivery] / Uber Eats [delivery]" - Terrence Doyle

Alex’s Chimis - Review - Jamaica Plain - Boston - The Infatuation

"Alex’s Chimis is a Dominican counter-service place in Jamaica Plain. It’s named after its chimichurri burgers, but almost everyone who comes here does so for the roast chicken. Don’t be a contrarian - the chicken is awesomely moist, crisp, and it’s the first thing you should try when you come here." - Dan Secatore

"At Alex’s Chimis in Jamaica Plain, get the the orejita (pig ears), and get the rotisserie chicken, too. And sure, why not: Get it with fried green plantains and rice with peas. This casual, counter-service spot has been around for over 20 years." - Terrence Doyle

Google
This small in-and-out spot has a steady stream of regulars for a reason: it’s good, honest-to-goodness homemade food from the Dominican Republic. The tender and juicy rotisserie chicken is seasoned and cooked perfectly — they rest the whole birds and cut them to order, to go of course. Definitely recommend, as it’s a solid choice for takeaway! Saluti.

Google
Really good Dominican food! No frills, uncomplicated yet heartwarming meals and a certain local local favorite It’s a small shop with no dine in seating, but the portions were extremely generous and the Chicharrones were both tender and crispy. You can get a plate with different sides, or a sandwich(“chimi”)

Google
My husband and I have been coming here for years . The food is delicious. Authentic Hispanic cuisine. No tables inside , it’s a takeout place only . Parking is difficult but manageable. The service is welcoming and friendly.

Google
Food was great service was great. I had never been in a restaurant like this before. One of my first times in Boston. A lot of things with closed so I didn't choose this place initially but it was clutch. Empanadas were great The door they were made with flaky soft. Ingredients were good. Beef was a little dry the yuca balls were great. To see myself going back for some of their fried chicken as well. It was delicious. Not bad guys, thanks.

Google
They gave me the wrong order and when I called them, they told me that I would have to come and pick up the right order when I explained I could not they hung up the phone. This place is incredibly unprofessional and they do not care about their customers.

Google
My husband always somehow suckers me into trying this place again after awful food & customer service experiences. This most recent one was no different. There is a lack of quality Dominican food in J.P. The chicken from here is WAYYYYY too salty and the rice was crunchy. Batatas were dry and had been clearly sitting for hours. Their prices are also OUTRAGEOUS! $2.75 + tax for a papa relleno smaller than my fist with almost no meat filling. I'd recommend traveling to Lawrence for decent Dominican cuisine.

Google
Great Caribbean food and even Chinese-American style fried rice (Cho- Fan) with a Latino twist. Good people, good service, long lines most of the time but definitely worth the wait. No dining in, take out & delivery only.

Google
4-Star Review for Alex’s Chimis Alex’s Chimis serves up some seriously delicious Spanish food, and the flavors never disappoint! Every dish is well-seasoned, cooked to perfection, and definitely hits the spot. If you’re craving authentic and tasty Spanish cuisine, this is a solid choice. That being said, I do feel like the portions could be more generous, especially for the price. I’ve been to other Spanish restaurants where you get enough food to easily feed two to three people for the same price, whereas here, the portions are more single-serving. While the food is amazing, a little more value for the price would make it even better. Overall, if you’re looking for great-tasting Spanish food, Alex’s Chimis is still worth checking out. Just keep in mind that the portions aren’t as big as some other spots. Definitely recommend for the flavor, though!

Yelp
I usually get the Combo Villa Mella,I'll rate the food here a 9/10 for me!!! . . . . .
google avatar

Arisbel M.

Yelp
My absolute favorite Dominican restaurant ever. This place has existed since my early ages of life and they have been making their carnitas fritas and moro de guandules the same since forever. My go to plate is the moro with carnitas frita and tostones. I freaking love it. Their pastelitos, bollitos de papa y yuca, pollo horneado, chicharron and everything else is on point! Please never close.
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh coconut smoothie, and the flan hit the spot. I recommended it happens to be my birthday tomorrow, January 7 so My Cousin decided to Uber Eats and send this to me since we can't spend the day together on this snowy weekend. Hope someone enjoys.

Stephon M.

Yelp
I love this place! I only order the combo dominicano with extra sauce and pickled onions. Its a half a rotisserie chicken with a ton of rice and sweet plantains. There's always a line here no matter when you go but it's simply so delicious. It's a takeout only place. Try not to go too late near closing (within the hour) as many things maybe unavailable.
google avatar

Fatboy S.

Yelp
Place was busy when I got there, but the line moved fairly quickly. Customer service was good. All the food was good except for the empanadas. The chicken was the highlight.
google avatar

Tamekka D.

Yelp
So I haven't ate here in years like 17+ and they are still amazing. Delivery with uber was under 45mins on mothers day. Everything was great highly recommend them.
google avatar

Avik C.

Yelp
I had heard about this place for years but never made time for it, which I regret! The food was absolutely amazing. It exceeded my expectations based even on great reviews. The roast chicken was moist and flavorful throughout, without being greasy. The yucca was so good--it looked plain but the soft texture and subtle flavor was so good. As far as service, everyone was very nice and crucially didn't make fun of the bad Spanish I used to order. On my short list now for excellent Boston under the radar food spots.
google avatar

Lizzie Y.

Yelp
I had heard great things about Alex's Chimis from friends and decided to try it out. It was very busy with a long line, the day I visited. I found the meat was dry yet greasy. Overall, was not satisfied with my plate that I ordered. I only was able to get a few bites in before throwing it away shortly after. I do not understand the hype regarding this place.
google avatar

Jimmy N.

Yelp
Great service, great atmosphere, and great food. Alex Chimis is my top favorites when I'm craving for Spanish food. Their fried pork is well flavored and always crispy!
google avatar

Allie S.

Yelp
An update is due as my past order was delivery. I was still not impressed by their dry tostones but their fried chicken was great and just as good as what I've tasted in the DR. The rotisserie chicken also looked fresh and juicy. Most of their display case was chicken and sides so that seems to be the more popular items in the store. Maybe I'll stick to ordering their chicken from now on whenever I crave latin food.
google avatar

Klarisha W.

Yelp
The food is amazing I loved the rice and the rotisserie chicken the most the fried chicken isn't that good but the pork is amazing too
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
Best fried chicken in Jamaica Plain! Large servings and delicious sides. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Scout S.

Yelp
Alex's is in the Latin quarter of JP and is well known among the DR community. This was our first time there and the food was incredible. We had chicken, rice& beans, plantains, Pastelitos de queso and flan. The generous portions were delicious. What was equally as good was the food were the staff who were extremely friendly and gave us samples for other items we were curious about. A local who was in line behind even made some suggestions. We took our food to go and ate it at a city bench while people watching.

Zaza F.

Yelp
Had this at a graduation party and it wowed me. I loved it so much. I had the rice and chicken and it was very good. Love this.
google avatar

Stephanie B.

Yelp
This is a solid spot for typical Dominican food. We ordered the roast chicken, fried meat, and boiled yuca. Everything was well seasoned and not overly salty. Yuca was a bit over cooked. My husband also ordered a chimi. If the restaurant is named for a particular food, expectations are high and unfortunately the chimi was disappointing. It wasn't at all like an authentic Dominican chimi, it was more like a Cuban sandwich. I wonder if they gave him someone else's order? We will probably give them another try. If you're in the area and craving Dominican food, definitely recommend.

Kimyana M.

Yelp
Chicharron was all fat and no meat. The rice was tasteful but cold. The sweet plantains was just regular bananas.
google avatar

Michele L.

Yelp
Ordered the chicharrones over rice with peas and sweet plantain. And the fried pork over rice with peas and sweet plantain. Both were superb! The fried pork came with the pickled onions. The plantains were fried whole- I've never seen it that way but obviously they're a big seller! They had to refill the plantain pans twice while I was waiting to order! Both were larges that came out to $28. Tax included. Employee at the front door to direct you where to stand and sanitizes your hands as you come in.

Yelp
From ct found this place day before I went online. Went to Fenway game and wanted to eat some Boston food not no fast food chain lol. It was good I ordered a combo of the rotisserie chicken and chichirones and rice. It was good. Thank for making my Boston trip cool too. I called ahead and it was a line in the store and out the door lol. Literally on a Sunday. They had made me priority so I can get my food and head back to ct
google avatar

Tanise M.

Yelp
Delicious !!!!!! I've been here 2x and the food is consistently fresh and authentic! The workers are fast and pleasant! They deserve all the praise! Always a line out the door!

Yelp
Excelente!
google avatar

Della S.

Yelp
Ordered delivery from here and I'm angry at myself for not discovering this place sooner. I tried the fried pork (carne sabrosura) combo with green plantains and cassava, and the fried chicken (capitaleño) combo with sweet plantains and fried rice (chofan). The prices were a bit higher than what is on their website ($13.50 each rather than $11.50 on the website) but this may be because I ordered delivery. The meat was on the dry side but the portions were huge! Despite the meat being dry, it was super flavorful. The sides were also very tasty. I think the fried rice is a good deal because they give so much and the rice itself has pieces of meat in it, so somebody could definitely eat it alone as a meal. Their other meat options sound awesome (chicharrones or rotisserie chicken) and I hope to try their other sides soon.
google avatar

Andrew W.

Yelp
This place is phenomenal and pretty inexpensive too. I always get the chicarrones since that is my favorite. Sometimes the meat is more dry or tough, but it's always delicious. For delivery, it always comes piping hot if you don't like your food cold. Generosity is always rewarded, 6 stars from me.
google avatar

Francis Y.

Yelp
Rotisserie chicken tastes so much better here than what you would get at the supermarket. I got a whole chicken, rice and peas, sweet plantains, a stuffed potato and a chicken empanada delivered. Everything was fresh, hot, delicious and the portions are generous.

Mee C.

Yelp
Alex Chimis can be a 5 easily. The roasted chicken, chiccarhones, rice and beans etc. But my last two occasions the rice seemed not to be as fresh. That is a turn off for me when it comes to food
google avatar

Hannah Z.

Yelp
One of my absolute favorite spots in JP. I usually get the chicharron, but I tried the rotisserie chicken and it was probably the best I've ever had. Fall off the bone and seasoned SO well. Pastilitos are another favorite too. Always love coming back for great food
google avatar

Richard L.

Yelp
The restaurant and food smelled SOO good even from outside, but the food was slightly disappointing. Here's what I ordered (all for a total of $27!) Combo plate #1 Fried Pork (4/5) French Fries (2/5) Cassava (3/5) Combo plate #2 Fried Chicken (3/5) Rice with peas (4/5) Sweet Plantains (4/5) Tres leches (3/5) Tip: Get the red onions with the plate! The acidity pairs well with the richness of the fried pork and probably any meat. I ordered in-person, but then ate it at home after 15 minutes and it was still pretty warm. There is no dining in at the moment, but they were very good on cleanliness and Covid precautions. The most unique item was the fried pork, but it can be really heavy. Some parts of the pork are pure fat, so be sure to get it with something to complement e.g. rice, cassava, red onions, etc. The portions are big enough for 2 meals and the value is great! Happy with some of the items and might give another try in the future.
google avatar

Tara T.

Yelp
Yummy food, excellent value, and speedy eats. Ordered delivery via DoorDash and it was at my door within 25 minutes despite an estimated time of 40 minutes. We ordered the rotisserie chicken plate with two sides (rice with peas, fried green bananas) and the fried pork plate with two sides (cassava and sweet plantains). The chicken was great -- the breast was a little dry but the drumstick was fall off the bone and the skin was tasty and well-seasoned. I found the fried green bananas a little tasteless but the rice with peas was good, savory and fragrant. The fried pork wasn't exactly fried and it was a little dry to boot, but the sweet plantain was over the top delicious. Overall for $30, you get enough food to last 2 meals per entree, easily. Fun place for takeout! I'm no expert on Dominican food but I enjoyed my meal!
google avatar

Rose S.

Yelp
Sooo delicious! I always get plantains, fried pork, rice with gandules and pickled onions. It's really consistent. I like how they have someone outside to guide you to where you're supposed to go for order pickup and give you hand sanitizer and whatnot.
google avatar

Richard P.

Yelp
Never had too much Dominican food in my life, but the Combo Dominicano was pretty solid. Flavorful chicken and the rice was savory too. I got the chicken sauce (Guasacaca) and it was overly salty and vinegary... I don't know if this sauce is supposed to be that extreme but taking little dips of it with the dryer parts of the chicken made them a little better. Can't go wrong with sweet plantain either. I wish I got the pork rinds, which I got for my father. He said it was really good... guess I gotta come back
google avatar

Chelsea K.

Yelp
Delicious! I love this spot for fresh, hot Dominican food at a great price for the generous portions offered. I always get the chofan (fried rice with meat) and sweet plantains--always fresh and taste great. For meat, I enjoy their Chicharrones as they tend to have a good meat to fat ratio and are chewy as opposed to hard lumps of meat. Everything comes with the infamous lime to tie it all together. Definitely visit every weekend and would recommend to anyone interested.

Yelp
My family & I order a couple items for a baby shower, we ordered over the phone & agreed for it to be ready by a certain time & picked up, when I got there my order wasn't ready, which created an issue as I need it for the baby shower, when I arrived for my order it wasn't ready, no on e could find my order, i kept being asked when I made the order, what time I called all for it to have not been prepare, I had to wait for the food to be prepared & after all that, after them not fulfilling what we agreed to, I had to wait & still pay full price, they "gave me" a small foam to go bowl full of the red onions! like... I asked for a discount & had to go back in forth with one dude about why I should receive a discount & he was really trying to tell me why they couldn't which was all reasons that HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CATERING ORDER, we ordered & all to do with THEN TRYING TO GIVE EXCUSES FOR THEIR F UP! The chicken is always the best thing they got going, it was dr meaning they just cut the chicken we ordered up without drizzling some of that bomb chicken gravy/juice/sauce whatever tf you want to call it & the empanadas was dry asf!!! it was embarrassing when we served the food. We're disappointed with Alex Chimis as we are reg customers for years now but this will be our last time catering, possibly supporting as the service didn't reflect going above to assure we were satisfied after not being fulfilled as greed upon.
google avatar

Le T.

Yelp
This place is a must visit for Dominican food lovers! The first time I tried Dominican food was during my first mission trip there. Was craving for Dominican food one day and decided to look for a new place other than Merengue. Didn't know I had this place bookmarked for a while now. Awesome (aka I already did my hw prior to trying this place out). Place is sorta like a take out joint. A few tables for you if you wish to eat in. Super cheap and friendly service! Their rice is to die for. Full of flavors! We ordered the fried pork and it was fantastic! Didn't order chicken because I had live chicken in DR and I don't think anywhere can top that. But I'll prob give it a try next time. I've been wrong numerous times so I am very open to try new things. haha.
google avatar

Christine F.

Yelp
What a gem! I stopped by for a late night dinner and honestly wasn't expecting much. But it's great food, quick, and super cheap. I haven't had Dominican food before, and this left a really good impression. We got the medium combo sabrosura for dinner (and wasn't able to finish) as well as a passion fruit milk. First, the passion fruit drink is super refreshing and tasty. It's better than all the passion fruit drinks I've had at any boba shop. The combo was also good; we got the rice with peas and fried plantains as sides. I loved everything, except the plantains. They were a little dry and flavorless. In terms of ambiance, there really isn't any. Very hole in the wall restaurant with limited seating. It's best for a grab and go meal. Other than this, I tried a new place and will probably have cravings for their food soon.
google avatar

Jose B.

Yelp
Dominicans love this place but Boston has slim pickings as far as truly delicious Dominican food is concerned I say most of the things they serve are mis seasoned and underwhelming but is fresh and hot because it stays packed. Go for the fried meat (pork) and some rice and pigeon peas. They sell a lot of rotisserie chicken which last time I tried was seasoned with lemon pepper marinade (nothing even remotely Dominican about that). My biggest pet peve is that all these places in jp cook the pork rinds with no salt and thats just wrong.
google avatar

William G.

Yelp
I got the fried pork with the rice and green plantains. It was extremely filling and satisfying for a great price. I also enjoyed the pickled red onions
google avatar

Angie P.

Yelp
For the amount of food you get...WOW. This plate is enough to feed two people to be honest. The rice is flavorful, well seasoned. Plantains were sweet and have fried crispy ends. The chicken was full of flavor right down to the bone. Only issue with the chicken is that the chicken breast was a little dry. But overall...delicious. I will order again.
google avatar

Lily X.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. We always get the half rotisserie chicken with platanos and rice, it is definitely enough for a meal for two. The fried chicken is good too. There is usually a line most nights, and for good reason! Delicious food and chicken - a must go for anyone in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
Delicious food, as always! I appreciate that Alex's is going above and beyond to keep everyone safe while continuing to serve crave-worthy and authentic food.
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
This place has absolutely amazing food. The chicharrón is unbelievably delicious and they give you great portion sizes. Two platters and a small side came to under $30, making it a great deal! I have had Dominican food before, but this is the best I've ever had.
google avatar

Syanna L.

Yelp
Small place but yummy food. A good place to pick up a quick meal. Street parking. Menu is also in English for those who don't understand espanol like me. But just point point point, and boom.
google avatar

Ren S.

Yelp
-Chimis -Carne frita -Guineitos -Pollo Horneado -Chicharon -Jugo de chinola This place has delicious foods and are very friendly. I'd definitely go back. The list above are really good and fresh.
google avatar

Patrice P.

Yelp
CHICHARRON!!! food is fresh and delicious. Their rotisserie chicken is so flavorful and juicy. The chicharron is my favorite thing on the menu! Yuca with reds onions yum! They have really good fruit smoothies too. Fast, fresh, and so good.
google avatar

Johnny A.

Yelp
My food was delicious!!!!!!! I ordered the rotisserie chicken with rice and guandules along with fried plantains. I also ordered the biscocho and relleno de yuca. The entree alone is enough but I'm obsessed with food so I ate everything I ordered. Everything tasted great and it tasted fresh.
google avatar

Patrice R.

Yelp
Always been a fan the food is delicious and although it gets super busy you walk away with enough food for leftovers , they are following all the covid guidelines and I feel really safe getting food there, it does get busy and they don't open on Mondays anymore only maybe during holidays however you can't go wrong with a meal from here
google avatar

Kensasha B.

Yelp
Every time I'm in Boston I journey here with a whole haul to bring home along with Rancatores Ice Cream. They're a must if your in the area. They're located in Jamaica Plains which is a thriving neighborhood of ethnic cuisines. There is a great Ethiopian restaurant across the street and an amazing Mexican restaurant a light south of the roundabout. If you like empanadas there's a fantastic shop at the corner where Alex's is located. Support them all. Food fro the heart is the best food for the soul and the restaurants do it right. Alex's food is packed full of flavor, the portions are extremely generous and the authenticity of the dishes are spot on.
google avatar

Jeremy D.

Yelp
I love Alex's Chimis. The portions are huge, the food is delicious, and the service is fast. They are a fast and friendly local place rooted in the Dominican community.

Joao D.

Yelp
I paid $12.21 for a small pig ears and fried rice! I ever paid that much for pig ear and rice here before the raised the prices and it's not worth it!
google avatar

Charlene E.

Yelp
I'm a creature of habit so when I order from here, I usually go with the combo sabrosura that comes with fried pork and plantains, the pastelitos (chicken), and some rice, sometimes the food hits the spot, other times the food can be a little too dry forcing me to chug down two gallons of water. It really can go either way. I've had a great delivery service experience with them and it's always in a timely fashion.

Jesus N.

Yelp
Ordene yuca con cebolla, chicharrón, y medio pollo, me gustó todo, y los muchachos atienden bien a la gente
