Alfie’s At The Alfred Tennyson - Review - Belgravia - London - The Infatuation

"Nothing says Belgravia pub-restaurant like seasonal black truffle charged by the gram. Truffle aside, the Alfred Tennyson's upstairs dining room, Alfie’s, has a menu full of British and French classics, like Cornish crab, beetroot tarte tatin, and pistachio soufflé. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Sinéad Cranna

Belgravia's new hidden gem! Food was absolutely faultless. Table side steak tartare is such a fun element, especially as you're encouraged to customise it to your taste. Monkfish is a tricky fish to cook but it was perfect. Was so impressed with how much pistachio flavour was packed in the soufflé. Great choice of wine by the glass and karafe, which was perfect for two. Can't wait to be back!

Google
The food here wasn’t bad but in my opinion isn’t worth the price tag. A few different parts of the meal had gone wrong including how the steak was cooked which was especially disappointing considering me and my partner went for an expensive cut. It might be due to teething issues as the restaurant had only recently opened before we went but there was definitely room for improvement considering how good we expected it to be. Really enjoyed the oysters though.

Google
We had a lovely meal at Alfie’s at The Alfred Tennyson. The highlight was definitely the beef tartare trolley. It was really fun to make your own and personalise it just how you like. Strangely, there was no mention or highlight of it on the menu, which was a bit of a shame as it’s such a great experience and would’ve been nice to know in advance. The roasted cod was decent, though a little underseasoned. A bit of salt and pepper helped bring it together. The real standout was the pistachio soufflé. Easily the best I have ever had in London. It was perfectly risen, super light, and paired with pistachio ice cream that added just the right amount of sweetness. I would honestly come back just for the tartare and that soufflé. Both were excellent.

Google
I liked the place very cosy and posh, the food was delicious and the service excellent, Stevie has been brilliant in serving us, very professional and friendly at the same time . The area is also lovely for a walk after dinner during a Summer night. Few steps from Hyde Park.

Google
Absolutely delicious - we loved it and the steak tartare tableside theatre was very fun! Pistachio soufflé if a must

Google
Has Alfred Tennyson one said it's better to have loved and lost and never to have loved at all. We felt like we love this place and our dinner and didn't lose anything. Our waitress was naughty as she was great we recommend asking for her weed upstairs how excited the traditional Pub downstairs and the dinner was good and we enjoyed ourselves recommend this place

Google
It’s a promising concept. However, there is a bit of chaos with service - sourdough took 30 minutes to arrive, lack of explanation from the stuff on why an extra piece of bread being brought (it was for a tartare). Staff are very nice but they need direction. The famous soufflé had incredibly cold, unmovable ice cream block on top, thus cooling the whole dessert and removing all the gooey mousse inside. It was also very eggy. The chocolate mousse would be good without any oil, as the oil used was pretty low quality. Alfie’s is trying too hard and misses the point

Google
We discovered the Alfred Tennyson in 2016. The best roast beef in London. We returned home to Canada and talked often about it. We returned tonight to experience the same wonderful meal and we were not disappointed. The service was wonderful.

Yelp
Grabbed a lovely lunch here on a week day and would definitely come back. Delicious food that's a chic upgrade to your typical bar food. Service was also wonderful.. attentive and great recommendations.

Yelp
We came here for a Sunday roast. They put the three of us in a table where it's in the center of everyone pathway. My chair got consistent kicks from passersby and it doesn't give you the nicest atmosphere. Food is ok but my lamb roast is like it's the trimming of a nice lamb leg. bits and pieces here and there but it's nice that they ask if you would like your lamb to be fully cooked. Beef roast only have pink or well done option so we opt for pink. Lucky it is to our liking but it might be too cooked for people that like it a bit rarer. Big portion of the chicken roast and there's option for a whole chicken. Veggies are quite soggy but the potatoes are nice. Overall not the best and can be a lot better.

Yelp
Quiet spot near Harrods. Outdoor seating with a good menu and cocktails. Get out of the crowds and stop by.

Yelp
My first experience wasn't great but I've had amazing conversations with them since. They convinced me to come back and it was night and day. I'll write more later, but I don't want to leave a bad review up while I pen a new one.

Yelp
This is a very classy place. Right away the host is super adorable and sweet. The waiter also had the same warm sentiment. Good service goes along way. I started my meal with coffee which gave me a nice boost of energy. The sourdough bread had a great texture and the butter was fantastic. The bitter leaf salad was refreshing and the dressing also great. The beetroots tasted so good. I especially enjoyed the goat cheese. My only thing is I will say I'm not the biggest fan of British food. It tasted good and while I enjoy it felt like I was missing something. I still highly recommend the restaurant though. Absolutely check this place out!

Yelp
A quick yelp search for fish and chips helped me find this gem. Best service we received in our entire 3 days in London. The atmosphere is really nice even though the tables are a tad too close to each other. I guess dogs are allowed to dine even in nice establishments like this so it was kind of funny eating so close to the gentleman holding his French bulldog. But of course the pooch was provided his own bowl of water too. We both got the fish and chips but I was wishing we had tried one of their Sunday specials as the roasts with veggies looked very enticing. However, the fish was perfectly fried and the chips were excellent too. The side kale salad was expertly prepared so we felt like we got something a little healthy to counter the calories of the fish and chips. This is an upscale neighborhood pub just a couple of blocks from Harrods so the clientele is dressed nicely and you feel like your eating in the Beverly Hills of London without the hoity toity prices.

Yelp
We came here for lunch on Boxing Day. We had their sourdough bread, ribeye and frites, chicken and mushroom pie, and their flourless chocolate cake. The ambience was relaxing and service superb. I'd come back again!

Yelp
We have only been in London for a day and a half and today I found a wonderful gastronomical experience. It was our lunch and we needed protein. After walking through the Embassy district of London, looking for someplace to sit and eat, we ran across this place. The staff were inviting and helpful. We decided to eat from the starter menu. We ordered the Cured Salmon with golden beetroot, dill creme fraiche and pink peppercorn. Absolutely amazing. We added Angus beef tartare with confit egg yolk and an amazing side sauce. We also added mashed potatoes with gravy. The beef was a masterpiece of flavor. The potatoes with gravy...Made a country girls, toes curl. I highly recommend you put this on your must visit list. Dessert was fresh made salted caramel Ice cream.

Yelp
Delicious food. Great place for a Sunday roast. Drink options are great too. Lovely service!

Yelp
Can't tell you what the food is like and I never will because I called three times over two days to try and confirm my reservation and was told each time that they couldn't find it. So we made other plans for dinner. Then, exactly thirty minutes after the time our reservation was supposed to be, they tried to charge my credit card $100 for being a no-show. When I tried to call to get more information, they never answered the phone.

Yelp
We used Yelp to fInd this restaurant while shopping at Harrods. The reviews on Yelp were spot on! We loved this place! Such a comfortable place. Had a real warm atmosphere. There were 4 of us. Three had the daily pie special and I had the butternut squash. It was so tasty. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Here is the 3-1-1: Food: For a slight upscale flavor experience this pub is a nice stopover especially since it was within walking distance of the Park Tower at Knightsbridge Westin hotel. There menu had a good selection of pub favorites as well as a hand-written board next to the bar of daily specials. We went straight for the entrees which included their special of the night of Beef Pie and from the menu a vegetarian option of Roasted Sweet Potato. The beef pie was somewhat de-constructed in which the small pastry (fluffy and well baked) was filled with tender braised beef and the vegetables were on the side with the beefy sauce reduction served in a small cup so you can balance your sauce to beef ratio. The mashed potatoes that was also served on plate was silky and fluffy and when you combined all of them together it was a beef pie raised to the next level. The sweet potato entrée was accompanied with roasted cauliflower and kale and the for a vegetarian option there was plenty on your plate and the contrast of salt & sweet made it a surprisingly "keep going back for more" after the 1st bite. The drink menu had many options and what made it nice was that you could order small size beers which allowed to make your own beer tasting at your table. Service: Super friendly waitresses that made you feel welcome and accommodating. Not a long wait once you ordered and they would check periodically to make sure you had enough beverages to make you happy. Ambiance: Very clean and decorated like a classic beach side cottage. Though the restaurant was almost at full capacity, between the seating at the bar and outside tables it still maintained a cozy and pleasant environment.

Yelp
Came in for a late lunch and this was a fantastic decision. The place had more upscale/modern British food. I loved my chili sautéed calamari and also my chicken breast with Swiss chard and celeriac. Mmmmmmm. So good! The juiciest chicken ever! Oh my god! I could have ate a few breasts! Wow! The place is cozy and really welcoming on a cold rainy day. What a nice retreat. I would definitely come back.

Yelp
This is a classic English pub. Great fish and chips. Very crowded and loud but worth stopping in!

Yelp
A couple of lost tourist stumble upon a warm and inviting pub but better than a pub late one night in December. Magic it was! I wasn't feeling well so my choices were limited but the Butternut Squash soup hit the spot. My wife had the hamburger which she really enjoyed. We finished it all off with a first for the both of us...Christmas pudding! When we come back we'll be back!

Yelp
The best pub food ever!!! We had the truffle Mac and cheese, the best sourdough and butter and the beets and ricotta to start and I'm not even kidding my table housed it in less then 3 minutes. It was so good at one point my freind was eating the butter with a spoon. Ok now that you know we are huge fatasses let me move on to the mains. I got the rump roast and rump a dump dump that shit slapped so hard. The puff pastry and the gravy combo is to die for. I waterborfed tge gravy onto anything I could. I mean shits gas so might as well make my plate swim. Anyways my freind got the burger looked gasoline but there are beets on it so if that's not your thing I wouldn't mess around with it. My other freind got the chicken and let me just tell you there are not skipping on the portions shit was huge like massive. Anyways she loved it and the meal overall was perfectly delicious and a great hungover meal!

Yelp
Best Whiskey Sour ever...need recipe please Service was fabulous. Food tasty. Fun and laid back.

Yelp
Props to the chef and bar for creative offerings. The service, although friendly, was a bit of a train wreck. Strike 1 was the wine showing up after our meals were 3/4 finished. Strike 2 was three requests for water while our glasses stood dry and strike three was, after the incredibly slow service, being told the kitchen had closed so dessert was not possible. No warning, just a polite "piss off". Three strikes and you're OUT!

Yelp
For our first experience we were looking for an English Pub. We found Alfred Tennyson to be more upscale than your typical pub. The beer battered fish and chips was one of the best fish and chips I've ever had. I like to sample fish and chips whenever I go to a Irish or British pub and this was the best. I also had a side beet salad which was very good. My only problem was the service which was fine, but rather stuffy.
google avatar

Anni K.

Yelp
The BEST MODERN English food!!! We had the best fish and chips and the juice of the fish was bursting out while the crunch of the fried batter was so light and tasty, mushy peas was super green and sweet that went perfectly with the fish. Everything was sublime, precisely slice smoked duck had intense smoky flavor, accompanied by toasted hazelnuts and baby watercress, with dollops of creamy sauce. The trout salad had the freshest house cured trout that tasted like baby salmon, it literally melts on your tongue like A+ sushi. The peppercorn sauce had a real kick that went with the skirt steak, every bite was heavenly. To top it off, the staff was amazingly attentive in a genuine friendly way, and you can't beat the gentle price for such high quality food, the head chef must cook with his heart and you can see how carefully every plate was prepared and presented. This is extreme high mark since we have just being to Ledbury, Dinner by Heston, the Wolseley, Spring, Rules ect... We are a bunch of foodies from NYC and we are kind of spoiled... we came across this place cause it's downstair near we live, we walked in to check out the menu and already feel the good vibes. This place made our stay in london extra sweet and memorable, and we will return to London to eat the food and try the Sunday Yorkshire Pudding! The thumbs up!!!

Yelp
While the restaurant was in a lovely part of the city our service and food were sub par. It came highly recommend for Sunday Roast so we took the 30 minute cab ride across town to meet some friends. We sat upstairs and there was only one server taking care of that entire dining room. It took forever for us to order a drink- then another 30 minutes to get the drink then we had to go find out waiter to order our meal. After another long wait the food came and it was all over cooked , dried out and lacked flavor of any kind. It was very disappointing. We could not ever recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Yelp
Hidden gem. Great atmosphere. We ordered the house made bread and salted butter- it was delicious. For the appetizer we ate the fresh mozzarella, artichoke and tomato salad with pesto. It was very refreshing. For dinner I had the Venison with tarragon mashed potatoes with the red wine au jus. I ordered it medium rare; it was a bit chewy, I'd recommend ordering it rare as this cut of venison is a bit tougher than a similar beef cut. My husband ordered the classic Chicken Pot Pie and it was amazing. Classic comfort food. I would recommend dining here. There is a bit of road construction going on around the establishment but it is well worth the visit. Road work should be completed by Summer 2017.

Yelp
I like the place a lot. A cozy bar with good food. They were short staffed when we went. It didn't bother me however some customers were annoyed. The food was good. We came in on a Sunday and they had their Sunday roast. I had the beef. My husband had the fish and chips and he liked it.

Yelp
Not enough reviews for this place. Wonderful food. Great service. Definitely recommend the bread and butter plate, as well as the fish and chips! 10/10. Will return for sure.

Jaime H.

Yelp
5 stars for the food! The fish and chips were amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience here. I highly recommend it. The service was not the best. We had to wait a long time to order and to get our bill. However,I would still recommend going here for a meal.

Yelp
I liked it but I really wanted to like it more. The roast pork was incredibly fatty, the Yorkshire pudding tasted like it was cooked at lunch time and the gravy was cold. Dessert was better. Service got better and the night went on. I had heard it was amazing so I guess it was just a bit of a letdown...

Colin M.

Yelp
The staff and food were wonderful. We had fish and chips and they were outstanding. The chicken looked amazing. Really a very pleasant lunch. The old fashioned drink was delicious. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Food is very good, I had the Eggs Royale. The only issue with it was the poached eggs were well done. Otherwise quite yummy. The desserts were also quite yummy. I would recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Great upscale pub. We had a very nice meal for three. Menu featured seasonal and fresh produce which was very nice. Solid wine list, great decor. Would go again and recommend

Yelp
During our 6 night stay in London we ate here 3 times. Service is good and staff is very friendly. Food is high calibre and consistent on all three nights. Classy but laid back environment with a nice menu and good selection of drinks. Nice vibe and the clientele is friendly as well.

Kumar V.

Yelp
Lovely area of London and nice bespoke pub. Service was embarrassingly bad. Lots of potential if they get their act together. Seems to be a theme reading the prior reviews.

Amanda S.

Yelp
This lovely upscale British pub was exactly what we were looking for. The service was warm and friendly and the food was perfection. The fish and chips and burger definitely hit the spot and we even got upgraded to truffle fries at no charge. We definitely recommend this restaurant for a lovely lunch.

Meghan D.

Yelp
The food and craft beer was good. Ordered the meat pie and venison burger. However, the wait staff was rather aloof and it took quite awhile to get service throughout the meal. All in all we would return for another meal.

H B.

Yelp
I love this place, great for drinks, with all the usual beers and wines as well as a great cocktail selection. One slight criticism would be the paltry offering of ale, but generally the ambience and pleasant staff make up for this. It may not be cheap, but considering the location it is not unreasonable. The food is also worth mentioning, the menu seems to change a bit, but don't miss the chilli squid as a starter or side, they are to die for. I would also love to go for brunch one weekend, the menu looks very yummy and having visited one of the sister pubs, the orange, and thoroughly enjoyed it I reckon this would be just as good. Overall, possibly the best of the Thomas Cubitt chain and well worth a visit.
