The 12 Best Wings In Houston - Houston - The Infatuation

"The soul food landmark Alfreda’s has some of our favorite fried chicken in the Third Ward. Chicken wings come whole (flats and drums connected) and if you order them as a plate, they are served with sides like mashed potatoes, candied yams, and collard greens. But even on their own, the chicken is crispy, with no seasoning spared on the tender meat. We like to order doubles because the standard three-piece combo isn’t enough, especially after one bite of the crackling skin on the chicken." - gianni greene

The 14 Best Black-Owned Restaurants In Houston

"Alfreda’s Soul Food has been serving hearty Southern classics in the Third Ward since 1965. The quiet, counter-service joint is usually filled with folks making to-go orders (and sneaking a few bites of their food before heading out the door), so there’s plenty of room for having your meal in the dining room. A tray at Alfreda’s consists of one entree, three sides, and a slab of cornbread, and our ultimate plate consists of smothered turkey wings, syrupy-sweet candied yams, and mashed potatoes covered in gravy. If you’re feeling extra hungry—or want to add some padding to your inevitable leftovers— get a side of smoky black-eyed peas, too." - gianni greene, chelsea thomas

The 8 Best Soul Food Restaurants In Houston

"Most people who stroll into Alfreda’s Soul Food, a Third Ward spot, are on a takeout mission—Alfreda’s is more about the food than the ambiance. But with the smells of fried chicken and smothered pork chops wafting through the dining room, even a busy Uber Eats driver would take a seat to wait for an order. The warmth at Alfreda’s extends beyond the staff (who will almost certainly call you honey) and reaches every bite of buttered cornbread, brined collard greens, and gravy-drizzled oxtail. Grab a large sweet tea and contemplate why it always tastes sweeter in a styrofoam cup." - gianni greene

Alfreda’s Soul Food - Review - Third Ward - Houston - The Infatuation

"When you walk into the Third Ward mainstay Alfreda’s Soul Food, it’s usually pretty quiet, except for the faint sounds of soul diva’s crooning over the speakers and the light sizzle of fish frying in the kitchen. Since 1965, the modest counter service joint has been serving hearty Southern classics heavy enough to weigh down a truck in an atmosphere that makes you feel at home. The atmosphere at Alfreda’s is fairly understated—a few paintings, some tables with their signature red and black chairs, and a view of the kitchen where the staff performs a few small miracles to bring out some of the best soul food the city had to offer. The simplicity feels comforting. Most people who stroll into Alfreda’s are on a focused take out mission. But with the smells of fried chicken and smothered pork chops wafting through the dining room, the to-go warriors might sneak a few bites before heading home. A meal here goes smoothly—in fact, the only difficult part about dining at Alfreda’s is deciding on how to fill your styrofoam meal tray. Each plate comes with one entree, three sides, and a hunk of buttery cornbread. After making your decision, in a few minutes, a tray filled to the brim with sides will hit your table. Grab a large sweet tea to wash down your meal and contemplate why it tastes sweeter in a styrofoam cup. And even if you do decide to eat your meal in the dining room, we’ve never left Alfreda’s without having a few leftovers to snack on later. It’s like the portions were sized to ensure that everyone has at least two meals in one tray. If you aren’t on a first-name basis with the staff at Alfreda’s, the food might convince you to stop here enough to become a regular. Come here when you are in need of a comfort meal and don’t have six hours to spend in your kitchen. Or bring enough friends to order everything on the menu and create your soul food tray power ranking. photo credit: Ricahrd Casteel photo credit: Ricahrd Casteel photo credit: Richard Casteel Pause Unmute Food Rundown Smothered Turkey Legs The turkey legs here come smothered and covered in a thick gravy, as all good smothered turkey legs should. The meat underneath is impossibly tender and makes this one of our favorite main dishes. photo credit: Richard Casteel Mashed Potatoes Deciding which sides to include on your Alfreda’s tray is tricky, but the mashed potatoes have to be included. Pillowy and topped with gravy, we can’t think of a better side to have. photo credit: Ricahrd Casteel Black-Eyed Peas Smoky black-eyed peas compliment any main dish served at Alfreda’s. Get them as a side or get them a la carte. Do whatever you need to do to ensure that you don’t leave without tasting them. photo credit: Ricahrd Casteel Fried Catfish A soul food staple, the fried catfish comes with a dash of heat from the Creole spice, and golden crackling skin that sounds like a campfire. photo credit: Ricahrd Casteel Candied Yams With a heap of cinnamon and brown sugar plus the tiniest hint of citrus involved, the candied yams should technically count as dessert, but we’ll happily take them as a side on our styrofoam tray. photo credit: Ricahrd Casteel" - Gianni Greene

I used to eat there when I lived in the museum district when they had the restaurant on alameda in southmore some of the best soul food I've ever had in the very best best best best peach cobbler I've ever had. No I was upset whenever I seen that they weren't on sophomore. Now I'll meet you no more. Then people there said the food was the same and the cobbler was the same. But I tell you what it is not\n I can't wait till Sunday. Because I might get there and get me some of that food and some of that yummy yummy, yummy cobbler. Thank you so much

I hate to be this person, but I’m highly unsatisfied. I just moved here 2 days ago & I passed by this place my first day & I was so eager to try it. I ordered some food today, & after I did something told me to read the reviews.. if I had seen the reviews before I ordered, I wouldn’t have ordered. First off, my food came messy. My gravy was EVERYWHERE! The turkey legs seemed to look like it’s on steroids.. I have 2 different brands of green beans.. & not to mention I didn’t receive my peach cobbler that I ordered. The turkey wings could’ve definitely been cooked longer.. this was not a great experience. I called twice & left a message.. no answer. Definitely won’t be getting my service again, it only takes one time with me.

The food was so good. I had the turkey wings with Mac and cheese and green beans. The plate was huge and definitely worth the price. The only complaint is the green beans were a bit salty for my taste and they should consider different plates for carry out, the gravy was everywhere. Other than that it was delicious, service was timely and friendly.

Their food is hitting hard. Super good. Loving this place. First time. This paragraph is a review of my second visit. Do not go there on Sunday. I am going to keep my five-star review of them because I know the food can be really good. Sunday is a busy day for them, but it seems like they're just throwing food together to look like what it's supposed to be but doesn't taste anything like the food I had on the first trip. On the second trip I could not eat the mac and cheese because it did not taste like cheese at all and was watery. The cornbread had no flavor. The candy yams were not sweet. The gravy for the turkey wings was like water. The mashed potatoes tasted funny and the turkey wings were tough. You should really try this place but only go on the weekdays.

Went on a Sunday because I was craving some soul food.I had 4 pieces of fried chicken only one was seasoned. Mac and cheese was ok and yams were extremely stringy. Dressing was good. Restaurant was clean service was good.

Google
Had high hopes. Really did. You get 3 sides and corn bread with your meal! Sweet tea and sweetened kool-aid were amazing! Best sweet tea I’ve had in a hot minute! Mac n cheese was phenomenal!! BUT I got rancid, moldy corn bread but my bf got good corn bread(?) regardless we avoided both corn breads which both, by the way, were just normal ol cornbread. Collard greens, rice, mashed potatoes were all “just fine”. Chicken wings and the pork chops were both okay. Tons and tons of gravy. Just felt like it was old food. Service was quick- too quick. Like came out a minute after sitting down when it was empty quick. Beautiful artwork though!

I actually didn't go for myself, but got a pickup order for a family member. I'd seen the restaurant for years, but since I don't eat soul food, had no reason to go in. It's was everything I expected. Please know it a smaller version of a Luby's cafeteria. Interestingly, there are no menus nor takeaway menus. You have to view it online or look at the one menu in a plastic stand. Also know, it's if you complain they move slower. You have very little control, the staff does what that do at one speed. The food looked appetizing, but still not my speed. It was a time warp being taken back to a southern soul food restaurant.

Alfredas long waited reopening is very appreciated. Fear not the food remains delicious and full of flavor. The ox tails dinner weighed about 20 pounds - full of tender tails, rice, green beans, all covered in a rich gravy, silky smooth cornbread dressing and mound of slightly sweet cornbread. However, the impact of the pandemic is obvious. It is now a TO GO only restaurant. Also the food is no longer proudly displayed in the steam tables, now the various food items are pictured on a video screen. The new reality for sure. Still good food, just don’t eat it here.
