The Best Bars On U Street

"There’s a lot going on at Alice on U, but that’s what makes it wonderful. There’s a fast-casual pho restaurant on the bottom floor, arcade games on the second, and a bar playing hip hop and R&B jams on the third. The theme, as implied by the name, is an ode to Alice in Wonderland and  the venue has curated a loopy, surreal experience to match. There’s crystal chandeliers, beaming lights and a hallway mural painted in neon colors. It’s the perfect place for an adventure, but also great for anyone more excited about the food waiting downstairs on the way out. But note that the kitchen shuts down at 10pm, four hours before the bar. " - omnia saed

The 8 Most Fun Dinner Spots in DC

"Alice in Wonderland themes are everywhere these days, but Alice on U Street is in a league of its own. There’s a fast-casual pho restaurant on the bottom floor, arcade games on the second, and a club playing the latest R&B hits on the third—all wrapped up in crystal chandeliers, neon lights, and quirky hallways that will have you feeling a little loopy. Amidst all the excitement, it's tempting to skip over the food at Alice and head straight to the dance floor, especially since you can’t bring it up with you. Don’t. The pho is crafted from a family recipe passed down from the owner's mother, who also happens to be a cook in the kitchen. And the crispy chinito wings, tossed in a sweet sesame and scallion marinade, are a hit." - tristiana hinton, omnia saed

Where To Eat With A Third-Tier Friend - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"Alice DC is a TikTok fever dream. There are so many things to do here that you and your third-tier can spend an entire evening bypassing the small talk for arcade games instead. The theme, as implied by the name, is an ode to Alice In Wonderland and the U St. spot has curated a loopy, surreal experience to match. There’s crystal chandeliers, beaming lights, and a hallway mural painted in neon colors. Dope fun bar with hip hop playing all night. They have 2 bars on both floors then the fast casual restaurant at the bottom. Love the graffiti art and Alice in Wonderland vibes. They have arcade games on the second floor. Drinks are reasonably priced and there’s hookah options as well. Men have cover and the kitchen was open past midnight last time I went. Top floor has an outdoor canopy.

This place is awesome!!!! Just tried it for lunch for the first time and I had the summer rolls and banh mi. Both were great. The banh no didn’t have pâté on it, so slightly less authentic. And instead of splashing maggi sauce on it, seems like it may have been mixed in with the mayo. Still delicious but it’s always interesting to see the little updates. This update worked! It also cost three times as much as Eden center but that’s the economics of being in the city. Also fewer meat choices. Anyway I’ll stop harping on how it isn’t exactly like the viet places in Eden. It doesn’t need to be. It’s a fabulous addition to the neighborhood and I’ll be going there often!!!

I went on a weekday, if I'm not mistaken, so it wasn't at its peak nightclub state. Nonetheless, I had a great time! Had delightful, random, fun conversations with the bartender KJ and then also ended up meeting his girlfriend who was also super sweet and lighthearted. Had some nice food, the drinks were great and the atmosphere of Alice is very cool, but the highlights were definitely in just having a good time and meeting good people :)

Went to check this place out and get some Vietnamese food. I'm blown away. It's beautifully constructed and the food is awesome! The bottom floor is a restaurant by day that serves Vietnamese and Asian street food. There are a whole bunch of classic video games on that floor too, so amazing and nostalgic. At night it turns into a club, so much fun! And, it's even got a patio. Go check it out for yourself !

Boy we had a time last night! Me and my girls came here on a Tuesday night, and had a ball. To be honest though, we had a ball because our party brought the party. The DJ matched our energy, the bartenders were extremely efficient, friendly and bringing out those shots when we needed them! Without us, this spot wouldn’t have been much on a Tuesday but it provided everything we needed.

Google
We had an amazing time at Alice DC! The vibe was super chill, and the decorations gave the place a unique and stylish atmosphere. Drinks were on the pricey side, but that might just be the norm for DC nightlife. The hookah was excellent – great flavors and a fun setup in the hookah section. The DJ set the perfect mood all night with a great mix of music. Even the little things, like the clean restrooms, made the experience better. We ended up spending the whole night here because we were having such a blast. Would definitely return! Highly recommend for a fun night out.

Went on a Sunday evening and it was very empty and I enjoyed it. We sat downstairs and ordered food and drinks. The bar tender was very kind and tentative. The food was good as well!

Yelp
My first experience at Alice was nothing short of extraordinary, marking the beginning of a new year in DC. From the moment I stepped in, it was evident that this would be a night to remember. The open bar during the first hour and the unlimited bites served throughout the evening set the stage for an unforgettable celebration. Let's talk about the food--the wings were simply outstanding, and the other bites served were equally delightful. Plus, the cherry on top was the unlimited arcade play on the first floor, adding an extra layer of fun to the festivities. And of course, what's New Year's without a champagne toast at midnight? Alice didn't disappoint in that department either. From the ambiance to the music, every aspect of the evening was top-notch. I wholeheartedly recommend Alice for anyone looking to ring in the new year, indulge in delectable food and drinks, and revel in an all-around fantastic experience. This place truly has everything you could ask for and more.

Yelp
Ordered from here on UberEats and got Pho, the My Mom's Bibimbap, Cha Gio (spring rolls), and Turon (bananas). Everything was very delicious and we look forward to going to this unique club in person.

Yelp
Came here last night for an event which was hosted on the top floor. I really like the decoration and the unique theme of Alice in Wonderland. Not sure what they usually serve but we got catered Asian food for the event which is pretty good. I like the three types of bao buns with different kinds of meat - spicy spam, beef, and chicken. The fried wontons and spring rolls are great too. We had free drinks and the servers were very friendly.

Yelp
The people are so nice here who work here. I was immediately greeted and my questions about the menu were answered. I was unsure what to get so I ordered the Korean style fried wings. They were flavorful and just enough spice! I stayed for the night club afterward and the music and decor is very original. Definitely recommend if you're in the DC area!

Yelp
The perfect spot to celebrate your birthday! My friend is friends with the owner Sonny, who's birthday happens to be the day after mine! We arrived and were able to skip the line. Hello VIP treatment! We entered the bar and the walk away to the bars/tables were these cool retro graffiti alley way. We arrived and immediately were able to get a hookah! Considering how packed it was, they served the hookah quicker than hookah bars! My friends and I decided to roam upstairs and while it was definitely more packed upstairs the Alice in Wonderland theme was on point. With bunnies, cute neon signs, etc. They definitely accommodate you if it's your birthday. A couple of rounds of shots were on the house making this experience fun and unforgettable!

Yelp
When you're starving and have to choose between the unknown or a greasy piece of pizza...sometimes the unknown is unknowingly WAY better! Quick stop as we were just here for the food and realized it was Vietnamese food. Nice sized menu for us to be ordering at midnight. The man eating the pho next to me looked soooooo good but we opted for the green beans, wings, and vegetable egg roll. Took about 10 minutes and those wings we SO good. Rarely do I not need ranch, but I ate through those wings like no tomorrow. The green beans had the right amount of garlic. I wasn't a fan of the egg roll as visibly seeing mushrooms turns me off but the sauce was good. So glad I have a u street spot when I need real food late at night! Loved their chairs at the bar as well.

Yelp
We had take out twice from Alice via UberEats. The portion is fair and pho flavor is decent as well. Apart from the pho, we ordered the pork belly buns which are actually better than the pho. They packed them nicely and delivery was fast. Can't tell about the ambiance since it was a take out. But from other Yelp reviews, it seems like you need to dine-in for the wholesome experience.

Yelp
Perfect quick stop if you're in the area. Had my food within 5 seconds, it was hot and delicious. The guy took my order quick and was very friendly. Very clean as well. I got pho and a Diet Coke. Total was $20.

Yelp
Really good Banh Mi. The ingredients were fresh, tasty, and bread crunchy. I tried the chicken and it was a flavorful cut cooked to perfection. They are made for takeout. One real super small table, some hightop chairs with railing space. If you swing by and grab it to go, you won't be disappointed. Friendly and efficient services. It was nice to talk to the chef. Give them a try!

Yelp
I had an excellent time at Alice when a friend of the family was celebrating their birthday in the upstairs area. The dj was amazing, and the drinks were flowing. If I had to mention any improvements, then it would be that they need someone to assist with cleaning their restrooms more often as the night progresses especially since the bathrooms on the second floor are unisex.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a good vibe with the right people. There's an upstairs and a downstairs. Vibes are usually slightly different. I prefer downstairs based on the DJs. Never tried their food but the drinks are good. Parking is almost always terrible because U street . Definitely a good chill vibe for the weekend and of course they have hookah.
google avatar

Yelp
Saturday, May 6th @ 10:30pm Only stayed downstairs and didn't make it upstairs however, my experience was meh. The Henny Side car was weak. The hookah was overpriced and WEAKER thank my drink. After 30 minutes, it was time for a refill which was $40. I honestly could have made up a better hookah at home, in my sleep. While I was really excited to support this establishment, I was extremely disappointed. Highlight: The crowd was lit and the DJ was

Yelp
The food not only is bomb as fuck; but the atmosphere is not only inclusive, but trippy!! Everyone from bartenders to table staff to the bouncers outside provide a safe fun environment!! Free video game playing, occasionally have to wait for the free video games but always worth it and great when playing with new friends! Carries a wonderland vibe with great Instagramable photogenic spots throughout entire bar!! Definitely a must visit!!

Yelp
We went for one of our friends' birthdays and had an amazing time! Alice made an impression from the second we entered. The Alice in Wonderland themed decor, the drinks, the hookah, the music - everything was on point! You'd never be able to imagine it's all behind a Pho shop! Highly recommend going for a great night out! Can't wait to go back and actually try their Pho too!

Yelp
This review is only for the nightclub. Let's get this party started!!!! Definitely a cute spot for a date or simply to chill. The service was cool but my bartender clearly doesn't know measurements provided that she looked at my under 4oz glass and compared its content to my friend's 6oz glass as being "the same" Ummm, that's not how measurements work but ok...lol it simply meant that I should have waited for the other bartender who charged the same price for the exact same drink-just in the correct glass... Vibe: the DJ definitely appealed to a younger crowd so to my 30 and over baddies, prepare to listen to heavy modern hip hop and vibe away. Definitely a spot I'd come to again but just to be cute, dance and enjoy a drink from another bartender lol I'd avoid this other bartender at all cost cause ain no way lol ain no way. Plus it was $20 for a small glass of ice meant to be a margarita. That was iceeeee and sips later and it was finished. If you're looking for a Friday meetup, get here. But know that there were times in the evening when the vibes became boring and eventually we left and went over to another spot. I'll probably drop by to check out other parts of this spot but definitely had a cool time.

Yelp
Alice is a great spot to checkout if you're on U or 14th. Takeout food area is located right in the initial entry way. Head down the hall on the 1st floor to find arcade games and a nice bar/dance floor area with a wall projector that always seems to have something good on. Second floor hosts another bar with sections and an semi exposed patio area. Staff was friendly and we've even been blessed with free shots depending on the day and size of the crowd. Great addition to the new string of U ST clubs/bars we've seen opening in the last year. Really feels like DC nightlife is making a comeback.

Yelp
I got a few tables here in the VIP section for my birthday. I chose this place because I actually have come here a few nights and had such a great time. I love their food and their hookah is great. Two VIP tables next to the DJ was enough space for me and 25 friends. They cost $1000 per table (minimum bottle service) but after taxes and fees and gratuity you're looking at around $2600. Throughout the night, my husband was never able to find the servers. He wanted to order a bucket of beers on top of the bottles and he said service was unfortunately horrendous. Servers only came around to bring us more bottles a few times. Same thing with hookah, this person was very difficult to find frequently. I would think that sitting in VIP, and the prices for things, that service would been better. In addition, at one point my husband stood up from the table and was shoved (shoulder to shoulder) with someone in our section. When asked, "hey, I thought we had this section to our group?" - the person proceeded to say they were with someone else and were allowed to be up here. When checking out my husband didn't receive a detailed bill and tipped on top of total (which already included gratuity). When me and him discovered this after, he was pretty upset. So be careful when paying your bill, as it may already include the 20% tip. I still like the vibe of this club. It was pretty easy to book a table and I like the separate space. I hope they improve their service to people purchasing tables. I still had a good time and it was a great birthday, but for the price I wish things were a bit smoother.

Yelp
Dj was amazing. I came here Tuesday night July 4th it was a whole vibe I loved it. I would definitely come back here and the drinks were strong. Great and prompt service .
google avatar

Katherine G.

Yelp
Fun venue, but the food isn't that great. I think the concept here is definitely to come late night for the drinks and club, and once you get hungry, order something from the menu. We first came to get the food, and I ordered the spring rolls. It was clear that they weren't freshly made since they didn't let me take out any ingredients, and the wrapping also tasted a bit dry which is a sign of a not freshly wrapped spring roll. However, my friends and I really enjoyed the venue itself and had fun throughout the night.

Yelp
I went for memorial weekend and i will say this after traveling so much this was the best food, best dance spot , crowd was amazing drinks did everything i hate that my night had to end . Very cultural i can't wait to go back and it's gorgeous very beautiful
google avatar

Roxane C.

Yelp
Me and my friends came here for NYE and the overall experience was fine. The drinks were too expensive for the the price, there was limited space for ga ticket holders, and there was no coat check. However the arcades were super fun and having the pork belly bao buns after a few drinks made it worth it (like really good, maybe the best). I thought the staff was super nice, one of the bottle girls stowed my coat in a bag behind the bar which was super sweet. I'd be curious to return on a normal night for a meal because the food was genuinely excellent but I'm not sure I'd do New Years there again.
google avatar

Shakira W.

Yelp
Stoped in to Alice on a Friday with a group of friends. Liz took care of us and is what really made the experience great with the service she provided. Thank you Liz!
google avatar

Lun B.

Yelp
I want to love this place but I've been twice now and I was overcharged both times. The first time I got a round of drinks at the bar and was charged one price, and then when I went back for a second round I was charged double the price. I decided to give them a second chance and booked a table which ended up being a big mistake. Our table was given away to another group so we had to wait for another one and we were also charged hidden fees and our deposit was not returned. We ended up paying over $300 in extra "fees" Be careful. Prices seem to be subjective here.

L C.

Yelp
Sneaky bartenders. I went to Alice on Friday to celebrate a friends birthday, and I have a charge on my card as if I left a $10 tip when I clearly did not. I am just checking my statement and seeing this and will be following up with the restaurant. I also had a friend come later and buy two shots for the birthday people and a glass of soda water (she wasn't drinking) the bartender downstairs (Latin man working on 1/13/22 around 11pm) told her the total was 80$ and did not show her a receipt when he saw she was paying with cash. He said that both of her shots were $20, mind you, that still leaves a major difference. When he rang her out the screen read $48. My friend used to work as a bartender so she didn't make a thing of it but she quickly said to me, "he's stealing." I hope management at Alice reads this because your bartenders are more than likely taking money under the table. Left a bad taste in my mouth and IF I return I will be using cash only and asking for an itemized receipt.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in dc. Follow them on Instagram to know which nights have what kind of vibe/music based on the dj. The interior design is so awesome perfect for pictures and its even better that its hidden behind where they serve food! The food is delicious :) service is the best in dc no debate.

Mark T.

Yelp
Beautiful spot. I love the speakeasy on the firt floor. Bartenders were attentive. Definitely coming back again!

Yelp
I was having a really good time here: good atmosphere, great food, but one thing ticked me off. I left to smoke, told both bouncers that I was leaving on both the entrance and exit, and they charged me a $10 fee to get back in because "guys pay a cover after 12am". I asked several times and multiple people wanted me to pay this. I brought my friends here because I read good reviews, but when my friends are inside and I wanna see them again, you're gonna charge me a fee? Additionally, I was charged an automatic gratuity on a non-itemized bill claiming $72 for 4 single-pour drinks ($18 a piece). They charge $18 a drink at an art installation or sporting event. It's a fun club but it's not THAT fun... No one else's bill was unitemized with an automatic gratuity applied the rest of the night. Popular place price gouges like usual. Fun place, but I don't like being taken advantage of! ‍
google avatar

Mercedez J.

Yelp
This was my first time coming here. My friends and I came around 11 after the Superbowl LVII on Sunday to socialize and smoke hookah. I don't know what was in this space before, but I loved the Alice and Wonderland themed decor. The hookah was smooth, and the drinks were decent. The DJs had everyone dancing and having fun. I had a great time the entire night

Yelp
Pho is really, really good. But you have to put up with bad techno music blaring to try to enjoy the great food

Yelp
Bartender Mark was amazing!!!!! He made amazing drinks and had so much fun here. Definitely recommend this club! :)
google avatar

Johnnyboy D.

Yelp
Me and Buddy stopped by the spot on Christmas Eve because everything else was closed and I was greatly surprised by the decor and the upgrading of the building. This establishment sits next-door to an old club that I used to go to so I was amazed that someone had bought it and spruced it up. It has a little bit of everything in it. It has an arcade. I believe it has pool tables but I'm not 100% sure. There is a bar on both levels. There's an eatery directly upfront, which is what drew me in. I will definitely be visiting the spot again I was impressed. Good job.

Yelp
Had such an amazing experience checking out this new club/lounge on U street. Super packed on the grand opening with lines out the door. The same owner from Cloaks and Daggers next door has outdid himself! He did a phenomenal job on making it Alice and wonderland theme but also making it his own with the traditional Vietnamese atmosphere. He spent so much time putting effort into really making this place special and unlike the rest. There's 2 floors that have different DJs that spin at the same time. The bottom floor has Vietnamese street food and really cool retro old school arcade games. I spent so much time playing one of my all time favorites Mortal Kombat. They also have a hookah bar, dance floor, and bar on the bottom floor. The second floor has VIP tables and an outdoor patio. Definitely a spot you don't want to miss!

Yelp
Hi Everybody, Haven't been out in a while, been in my garage studying the 1965 UFO report that was just made public and deciding how to steal Hanks mower to make certain it didn't have AI in it. But I decided to take a break and go to Alice during Cinco de Mayo with Boomhauer to see what all the hype was. Once I got in I was surprised by the take out food floor which is very useful for drunken nights off of Alamo beer. But then we went upstairs where it was a club like full blown club with sections but nicely designed but not particularly me and Boomhauer type of party. So we went downstairs and down the hall from the takeout area and we were surprised to find a string of arcade games and a big open space. We were greeted with a great DJ and a projector TV playing the game. Also playing Marvel vs Capcom in a bar or club will always have a soft place in my heart. As Boomhauer and I exited all we could think about is that we would do this again. I guess it's Back to Arlen...

Yelp
Stumbled by this place bar hopping and was really pleasantly surprised with how good the late night food was with great DJs and trendy aesthetic!

Yelp
The ambiance is amazing ! The food is top tier ! My favorite is Mama Trans Pho & the Chinito wings.

Yelp
Really cool place. The front outside looks like a carry out and you keep walking to the back for a lounge type feel. I was able to come in and actually find a seat which was great. It was packed but the bartender was so attentive. I was able to place my drink and food order with him so it was super efficient. He continued to walk around and check on us during the night. I really appreciated that because most places that are new don't have good customer experience so it was really nice.

Yelp
Definitely an experience you do not want to miss. Besides the amazing homemade Vietnamese food as soon as you walk in, a beautiful scenery behind the secret passage which includes cool old school arcades games, drinks and music. they have an awesome Alice Wonderful theme where you can take cool pictures and hang out with your friends and family (21+). So, if you enjoy alcohol and late night food, this is the place for you.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from Alice and was absolutely blown away. The pho is incredibly rich, the bao buns were amazing, and I absolutely loved the summer rolls. Definitely putting this place in regular rotation for takeout, but I'm excited to come in to dine sometime soon!

Yelp
Amazing Food and amazing atmosphere, the Art work is so trippy in the game room where all games are free and bar in area in the back, upstairs it's a Club Decked out with Outdoor Seating and Hookah This place is a Vibe... Chicken Wings and Pho are a winning Combination...

Yelp
Look no further! Alice bar is the way to go if you're looking for great vibes and drinks. The employees were quick and friendly. If you're having the munchies go downstairs and grab some food from Mama Tran's drool worthy menu eggs rolls, fries, and bao buns! There's also a hidden downstair bar/lounge for a fun arcade game. Check out cloak and dagger next door as well!

Yelp
Alice in the wonderland!!! The theme of this place is so edgy and cool, I loved the vibes and ambiance! Service was great, we came here to celebrate my friends birthday and they brought her a happy birthday sign! Super sweet and attentive staff! And they also serve late-night authentic Vietnamese food!!!! You wouldn't get this experience anywhere else in DC. I'd definitely recommend checking Alice out!!!

Delores F.

Yelp
I got VIP here and overall enjoyed myself. The only thing I would say is be CAREFUL if you order hookah. The guy who runs the hookah charged us for the second hookah which was fine, but it was with the SAME tobacco, he didn't change it and it severely burnt my throat when I tried it. My throat was burnt and sore for over a week. I just feel like that's so wrong to not change it but still charge for a new one. I also never received my replacement hookah that they mentioned, one came out then was moved as if it was the wrong section/table. I explained to the owner why I was annoyed upon paying, and feel like someone could have reached out to at least show that they cared after paying so much money. Aside from that, this would've been a overall a great night! I had a really great time and the bottle staff were great and super helpful. Dj was AMAZING!!

Niki L.

Yelp
Alice on U left much to be desired. I saw this place recommended to me via social media - and in true social media fashion, it definitely over hyped this establishment. This place is small, and not conducive to crowds; upstairs is only accessible to private events, or large parties. Their arcade selection is small, but only because their first floor has minimal square footage. Their menu is alright They advertise themselves as a speakeasy, but there is nothing that screams "speakeasy"?? Their pork belly buns were nothing to write home about, and somehow left me feeling even more hungry and queasy at the same time. Though to give them the benefit of the doubt, I did come here on a weekday-- so maybe that could have attributed to my subpar experience. Though I don't think I would have liked a crowded bar with such minimal wiggle room. The "vision" seems interesting in terms of the bar, but it fell flat.

Yelp
Really cool venue! I loved the free arcade games and really enjoyed playing street fighter! I ordered a tequilla sunrise from the bar and it did not disappoint. Of course the real star of the show was the kitchen! I ordered the bbq pork belly bao buns and a cup of pho broth. Both were delicious!! All in all, an incredible experience especially for U st. I found the pricing very reasonable and I'll definitely be back! Food came quickly and the service was great at the bar+restaurant.

Yelp
Food is fantastic! Boa buns bursting with flavor in every bite. Crunchy delicious springrolls filled with meat and vegetables. The pho is off the hook! Definitely keep warm this winter with that hot bowl of Pho. Pho the #1 cure for all illnesses especially that hang over after a night of partying at Club Alice. Definitely a great spot to take a date. Food, music, alcohol and free video games. What more can you ask for

Yelp
Ambiance is super cute and great food. Service was professional and timely. I picked up food on a Sunday night and there was a DJ with a great vibe. Definitely will be coming back
