Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week | Eater LA

"At Ali‘i Fish Company’s Torrance takeout I appreciated an everyday-market approach to poke with a short selection of lightly marinated tuna and salmon that lets the fish’s quality shine; the fish felt plump and luxurious (the company claims direct Hawaiian buyers), paired simply with a sweet, chewy seaweed salad and seasoned sushi rice for a fresh, straightforward bowl." - Eater Staff

Google
Love this place!!! Reminds me of home, exactly a hole in a wall, blink and you'll miss it place. The menu is simple, decor is plain but the food is quality 👌 Thats is what matters! I grabbed the Ali bowl for $20 thar came with Kalua pig and it was good!!! They need to advertise that more i instead of keeping it in the back. Not perfect and definitely has room to grow as the gain experience. Over all amazing place and a must try into what old skool local Hawaii poke shops were like.

Google
I went here about 2 weeks ago for business event and was craving poke. It was my first time here. The owner was awesome and super friendly! He let me sample the different flavors of poke and they were all delicious! Will definitely come back when I’m in town. Highly recommend!

Google
Eh! The bowl I ordered was quite small and didn’t seem worth the price. The tuna were pretty bland. I was left feeling unsatisfied, and despite considering myself an average eater, I didn’t feel full afterward. Sides options were also limited just seaweed salad and avocado. Overall, it was underwhelming. I don’t think I’ll be returning. There are better options out there for authentic poke and this isn't one of them.

Google
The ahi tuna bomb is so good! Next time I gotta take a few. Tried the shrimp poke and it taste fresh! Love this high quality Poke spot

Google
Cute little place for fresh tasty poké. Very friendly. This is location is take out only. No place to sit down. Go to their El Segondo location for dine in. Also menus is a little different.

Google
This is the healthiest thing you can get in the South Bay without making it yourself. I’m not sure I could do better myself honestly. The fish is always super fresh and they don’t drown it in sauces. Im addicted.

Google
Best Authentic Poke in South Bay. Super fresh, bursting with flavor at every bite. Portions were perfect!

Google
Great Quality Fish and food! I’ve eaten over a thousand different poke spots in my lifetime and I know the difference between Americanized poke and traditional poke. This is traditional! The female that helped me was very kind and helpful since it was my first time. Both the flavor and texture of the rice and fish was perfect.. Sizing is smaller than normal portions. But you will get full! Trust me! Pricey more than the usual, but this is Traditional Authentic style poke. So pricing is premium and worth it. Parking is very small and the only downside to the location. But there’s parking elsewhere around, and the streets. Overall the Experience and Food Was Excellent!!

Yelp
Fantastic quality poke with some truly unique combinations. Definitely try the house favorite Creamy Garlic Poke. Generous portions sizes. Great rice. And the sides were good too. Amazing staff and amazing value. Would go there once a week if I lived in the south bay.

Yelp
Torrance Food Crawl #442 Ali'i Hawaiian Grill offers a minimalist approach with a simple menu that has a limited selection. For the Poke bowls, select your bowl size, pick two from the four or so fish choices, a base (rice or salad), and for most bowls a side or two. After several visits, my experience has been fine each time. Good quality fish and fresh sides. There are also some plate options where you can select Huli Chicken or Kalua Pork. I've tried both the chicken and pork (though not on the plate option), and both were excellent. This location used to be strictly take-out, but now there are two tables inside if you'd like to sit inside. I feel compelled to mention that when I recently visited this location, they had a health grade of B from LA County displayed in the window. Yelp shows that they had 14 health code violations on September 18. Usually, I don't show too much concern for these health scores, but when a restaurant's primary product is raw fish, a lower score gets my attention.

Yelp
We used to love this place but the poke quality has gone downhill since they changed their concept to include grilled items as well. I placed an order online recently for some poke bowls. My go-to was always the ponzu salmon but this time, the salmon was so strange in color! It was pale and looked like it was maybe partially cooked?! I was so shocked! It definitely wasn't fresh like it used to be. It didn't even look like poke. The rice also had a weird, dry texture to it as if it was old rice. I'm so sad because I used to love this place! But I probably won't be back after this. I hope they can get their act together!

Yelp
There aren't many places where you can just get poke, by itself, without a bowl. If you truly love poke, try it by itself sometime. I was a fan of their El Segundo location but I believe it is gone. This place had about 5 or 6 different fresh poke styles available during our visit. We tried the Hawaiian, the Creamy Garlic Crunch, and the Sweet and Spicy. We also ordered the Chips and Smoked Ahi Dip, and the Huli Chicken Bowl. I think I loved everything. The Creamy Garlic Crunch poke was especially amazing. It had a slight spicy kick to it and it was rich and delicious. The chips that came with the dip were obviously freshly-made wontons and I could have eaten a hundred of them. The dip was good but not as flavorful as I had hoped or had in the past. For the chicken bowl, the rice and cucumbers that came with the chicken were excellent. You get a ton of mac salad and it is excellent. The chicken was solid, too. Unless they are hiding in plain sight, the places that just sell fresh poke, without the bowl, are few and far between in Southern California. I love poke bowls, too, but sometimes the poke by itself (with the different sauces and seasoning) is just incredible. This spot serves delicious fresh poke and I will always be a fan.

Grace K.

Yelp
I've had plenty of mediocre poke, but this is genuinely the worst bowl I've ever had in my life. Rice wasn't soft and fish was stale. I got sweet and spicy tuna (bland and salty) and ponzu salmon which straight up tasted like spam. I double checked the online menu to make sure I was so flabbergasted that I double checked the menu to make sure I didn't order a non-fish item. Unfortunately, it was indeed salmon. Service was very nice, though.

Yelp
I've been a huge fan of Ali'i since my wife and I stumbled upon their El Segundo location about five years ago. It was the best poke we'd ever had outside of Hawaii --fresh, flavorful, and a huge step above the typical chain spots. This was my first time visiting the Torrance location, and I hate to say it--but the experience was disappointing. The quality and texture of the fish were off, and none of the tuna tasted quite right. We both had to rely on soy sauce just to make it somewhat palatable. The worst item by far was the Ponzu Salmon. We tried to overlook its strange, pale color--it looked almost cooked--but the texture made it inedible. We threw it away I'm genuinely sad to post this, especially since I believe I left a glowing review for the El Segundo location years ago. I'm hoping this was just an off day and that I can come back and update this review in the future. But unfortunately, today's experience was too poor to ignore.

Yelp
My friend and I were craving poke so decided to give Ali'i a try! We both took our bowls to-go. I got a poke bowl with rice/ salad as my base. For my sides, I got pickle cucumbers, ocean salad. For my protein, I got ponzu salmon & onion limu ahi. The sides were very fresh and tasty. My favorite was definitely the salmon. The fish is marinated, and the style is more similar to the poke found in Hawaii! I do wish the portions were a bit larger for the steep price. Service was friendly and they were very helpful in offering utensils or napkins with our order.
google avatar

Jen T.

Yelp
Poke is good. This place is a bit pricey for what you get though. Clean environment and parking in the back of the restaurant.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Food NEVER disappoints. I usually get the Poke Bowl w/ 2 sides: Creamy Garlic Crunch and Sweet & Spicy. Portions are perfect for me and the fish is always fresh. I've only visited Hawai'i once, but all I had was Poke there and this place is the closest I've found so far to that. I always enjoy coming here! Edit: I will say they pack a lot of rice, but you can always do greens or half/half
google avatar

Vanessa R.

Yelp
Great portions and big pieces. I got the Poke Bowl with 2 sides. I went for the Spicy Ahi and the Ponzu Salmon with edamame and ocean salad with a base of rice. It was a big portion and could not finish it. Most poke places don't give as much! Service was good.
google avatar

Steve R.

Yelp
This was my first visit here, and I really enjoyed the selection and freshness of the poke they served. I had my choice of two poke flavors and two sides plus deciding on your base. I always go go with 1/2 white rice and 1/2 mixed greens. The flavors all went well together and made for a refreshing and great tasting lunch. Parking can be a little crowded, and they do have indoor seating, so you will be getting your order to go. Those are the only real drawbacks, but the food makes up for it. It's definitely worth a visit
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
This is my favorite poke in the South Bay. I like the onion limu and the creamy garlic crunch. The ocean salad is also very good. Last time I tried the poke bowl with kahlua pork in it also, it was so good. The bowls are big and fill me up for the whole day. They also have Hawaiian sun drinks. I believe they have another location in Hawaii also. This place is authentic and seems to be family owned. 5 star service also.
google avatar

Carmen P.

Yelp
I'm a frequent customer of the el Segundo location and have never had quality issues with the food. (Though I'm disappointed they discontinued the Lava flavor) Today I visited the torrance location and was surprised to see only one employee that was preparing the food in the back, and also taking customer orders. I got the poke bowl and also the chicken plate with a side of avocado. Once I got home, I was shocked to see that the avocado was brown, stringy and foul smelling. The fish was also not as fresh as usual. This is not the quality of food I would usually expect from Ali'i and will likely never return to this location.
google avatar

Liza G.

Yelp
This is the second time I've come to this location and it's been closed even though it shows it's open. I even called ahead of time and confirmed they were open but when I arrived it was closed. Very frustrating!!
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
I tried poke for the first time today and it was great! The basic $14 option includes two types of poke and your choice of base, like rice or salad. The $16 option includes two kinds of poke, two sides, and a base. I prefer to just have poke and a base because the marinated fish is so good on its own. I don't want the seaweed salad and other toppings to take away from the flavor. The $16 option also comes in a larger bowl so I'm interesting in that pro. I found out they offer catering size as well, and I'm interested in placing an order for a special occasion. Take out only no seating.
google avatar

Ally K.

Yelp
Personally not the biggest fan. Big portions, but really salty. No place to eat inside. Spicy mayo wasn't that great
google avatar

Peter C.

Yelp
I've tried Ali'i twice now during lunch around 1-2pm, and both times have been good enough to satisfy my craving. The poke is very flavorful, but it has the texture of day old poke. I'd skip out on the Kalua pork next time, the texture and flavor is there but it was super salty. Cucumber salad was refreshing and tangy, it is my favorite side. The mac salad does the job, and I'll get it if I'm craving. The shop is small but very clean. The workers are always nice and friendly!
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
I never write reviews but this was quite literally the worst meal I've had all year. We got a chicken dish that was so bad I couldn't feed it to my kids. It tasted like it was cooked with 5 cigarettes. I hate to be dramatic but it was disgusting. It was not edible.
google avatar

Chad K.

Yelp
Fresh and authentic. The freshest poke we have ever experienced. Not cheap. You are going to pay for all that freshness, but man, you owe it to yourself to try this place at least once in your life. It tastes like fish just pulled out of the ocean and cut on the deck of a boat, and then thrown into an amazing poke recipe right before your eyes. I would drive to Torrance from Long Beach any day of the week just to have this again. Staff is warm and friendly.
google avatar

Jenny K.

Yelp
I've heard a lot about this poke place so I was excited to try this place out! We went around 5:30pm and we were sad to see only couple poke options available. I got the spicy tuna and Hawaiian tuna with seaweed salad and Lomi salmon. Both poke lacked flavor and it tasted the same... the lomi salmon didn't have much salmon in it, only tomatoes and onions. Maybe my expectations were too high? Not too sure if I'll be back
google avatar

Chary S.

Yelp
I am picky with poke but this place has been consistently delicious and fresh!! Looove the quality of the food. Another must try is their dip with chips, it's out of this world good. I'd have to say that every time I come, the staff has always been kind, friendly and patient -so rare nowadays :P
google avatar

Anna A.

Yelp
Wow, delicious fish here!! It's so fresh and tasty. I got half hawaiian and half salmon and loved it. Huge portions too! Best way to enjoy it is to get it take out (only option anyways) and eat it by the beach. Employees were so kind and let me try a bunch of them because I couldn't make up my mind.

Jonathan I.

Yelp
I don't know what happened to this place. One person staff making poke and taking poke. The poke is not seasoned at all. This place has no resemblance of their Manhattan Beach location. Try to avoid it if you want poke. Go to Jus Poke or Poke and More in Lomita, they are so much better.
google avatar

Alena Y.

Yelp
this might've been one of the unpleasing places i've ever eaten from. stains and old liquid (?) was all over the glass display which the fish was inside, that looked old/ definitely was atleast 1 day old. ate one bite at home and gave me a stomach ache for the next 2 days, service was good though but would not visit again.
google avatar

Jamie D.

Yelp
Only 2 places I recommend to get poke in the South Bay and this is #1. The texture of the best is like butter, nothing funny at all. You can tell how fresh the fish is. The menu is straightforward which is good, having too many options can lead to different outcomes and when you say you want or crave poke, this is the spot. I used to get the lava, but it looks like they discontinued it so I go with my second now first go to--the sweet and spicy poke, just by itself no rice. The ahi dip is a must!!! The smoked ahi dip comes with these homemade chips and it is delicious!!! I finally took my brother and his girlfriend to this place over the weekend, and from the moment we stepped in and heard Jboog singing "Here I am" then Ekolu singing "drinking problem" blasting on their speakers to Eating the Poke in our car right in front of Ali'i Fish company, it reminded them of Hawaii. It's nice to come to a place that reminds of you an exact place and times you've been at/to and how memories can all come together and affect your mood.
google avatar

Marie N.

Yelp
First time at this Poke spot and gotta say it was delicious! Everything tasted fresh. Ahi and salmon bowl hit the spot. Keep in mind it's only take out no tables to dine in.
google avatar

Ryna D.

Yelp
Ali'i is my other favorite poke shop so I'm really glad to have this location open! Same quality as El Segundo shop. Takeout only.
google avatar

Laura K.

Yelp
Went on a Friday afternoon and got ponzu salmon and hawaiian style poke with lomi salmon and mac and cheese sides. I shared the bowl with a friend and both of us tried everything together. With each bite, we grimaced. The lomi salmon tasted like it went bad. The ponzu salmon should be renamed to ginger salmon with how much ginger flavor it had. The whole poke tasted like they were trying to hide the age of the fish. Mac and cheese had a grainy texture like it was in the refrigerator for awhile. We ate this bowl along side with poke from a different place, and difference in quality was huge. We've also tried many poke places before, so we know very well what fresh good quality poke is supposed to taste like and this was unfortunately not it. My friend ate most of the ponzu ginger salmon and ended up with diarrhea.
google avatar

Nathaniel S.

Yelp
The worker here is so friendly, but wow everything was so salty it was hard to eat. I'm not going to throw away food and $20 I spent on this food while I was starving. Let's start and say I ordered the XL combination which comes with two choice of poke and cooked protein. I chose the pork, salmon, and Hawaiian poke. I also got the free check in for a loma salmon. The pork was very dry, salty, and disappointing. It tasted like they just poured salt blindly in all their food that night. The poke itself was tender, no stringy parts, but salty beyond belief. I never had salty poke in my life and I never knew poke could taste like the Pacific Ocean. It's very disappointing knowing the quality of the fish was good, hence the two stars, but marinate itself was ridiculously overwhelming in salt. The Lomi salmon is practically salsa with tiny pieces of salmon, nothing special. I hope this was a bad day for them and their food isn't this salty, I'm curious how this place got such high ratings if their food is always salty and dry for their cooked foods. I would not recommend this spot if you are feeling poke.
google avatar

Jeanette C.

Yelp
Tiny shop tucked away in a small plaza. Employees are friendly, cool to talk to, and are pretty good about answering questions/making recommendations. Authentic poké is hard to come by in California, this place does a great job letting those ono flavors shine bright! If you find yourself stumped on what to get, you can ask for a sample and they'll hand over a piece or two on a toothpick. Lastly, an underrated feat. people don't usually talk about: TEXTURE Texture of the fish is spot on here. You can tell how fresh their batches are.
google avatar

Dora T.

Yelp
I've been eyeing Ali'i Fish Company for quite some time as I drive by often. Unfortunately it's always on the opposite side of the road and I have to go out of the way to enter the tiny plaza. That's my biggest gripe. It's not located in a convenient area. The small lot is also a nightmare because it competes with a Starbucks drive thru. Okay now on to the food. I ordered the spicy ahi and the Hawaiian ahi and the fish is super fresh. Yes I agree that there is way too much rice in proportion to the fish. Luckily I used the Yelp check in and also received a side of salmon. I still couldn't finish the rice. Maybe I'll try the salad next time. Service was efficient. I was the only customer there on a weekday at 11:30am but it wasn't really lunch hour yet. I would give them 3.5 stars but rounded up to 4. I think the freshness of the fish make up for the small portion but please be careful when you come here. Don't get into a fender bender and don't get run over by the Starbucks drive thru cars
google avatar

Coco V.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place as I was running errands and got hungry. The guy who helped me was really friendly and helpful. He let me sample whatever I wanted. I went in there thinking I was going to spend less than $20 for a quick bite and ended up spending over $40 because I liked all the things I tasted. The only thing I bought blindly without tasting was the kalua pork. I was starving when I had my first few bites, so it was amazing. After I wasn't hungry anymore and went in for seconds hours later, it wasn't as delicious. Maybe because I really liked the poke and the dip so much. Either way, this place is good so give it a try
google avatar

Cindy N.

Yelp
We drove about an hour to try out this spot, because we really love Hawaiian-style poke. Wow! The service was great. The cashier allowed us to sample each of the fish, and that really helped in ordering. I ordered the Ginger Soy Tuna (my favorite) and the salmon. My friend ordered the Lava and Hawaiian Tuna. I added crab meat to my poke bowl and my friend added seaweed salad. We also ordered the chips and smoky tuna dip, which I didn't really care for, but my friend liked it. One downside--my white rice was a bit hard and dry! My friend's rice was fine. I wish they used sushi rice, but the fish was still sooo delicious and soft and melted in my mouth. There's no seating here, so it's not someplace to sit and enjoy your food. You'll have to order and then sit in your car or find someplace else to enjoy the food. I'll be back!
google avatar

Melanie G.

Yelp
I got the salmon poke. Flavors (eg ginger) of the sauce were prominent. It's a good bowl of poke, but on the pricier side for fish that might not be as fresh as some other local poke shops. I appreciate that there was a salmon option and not just tuna. They also have tofu option for vegetarian/vegan. Also there aren't any tables to eat at inside or outside.
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
Ali'i offers reliable, no frills poke bowls. The fish itself is fresh and tasty. Just poke and rice alone was pretty steep in price, so I chose to forego the additional toppings costing more than a dollar. The interior is small with no seating, so it's a grab and go type deal.
google avatar

Julia H.

Yelp
Got the Onion Limu Ahi (soy sauce with onion) and Lava (spicier mayo). The poke here is premade meaning you can't customize but the flavor of the sauces are able to marinate into the meat more. The soy sauce poke was a bit salty to eat on it's own but would be good with salad or rice. The Lava was slightly spicy 1or 2 on a scale of 5. Pretty good overall. Might come back for the other flavors.
google avatar

Leslie Y.

Yelp
I was a little disappointed by my experience, especially after reading all the enthusiastic reviews. Perhaps I had a bad batch this time, but the poke had a slimy texture. It smelled fine and tasted okay, but the appearance gave me pause. The seasoning was also a little lacking. Only time will tell whether I will suffer any ill effect from the food. Wish me luck.
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
If you're looking for quality poke, this is the spot. There are a number of different fish options and seasonings available and it's very reminiscent of the poke places in Hawaii where that's pretty much all they serve. With that said, this place is pricey. They flaunt their quality and while they aren't wrong about that, you get what you pay for. It's ~$15 for a tiny bowl. You get two choices of protein but there's no much else in the bowl. If you want anything else, it's a surcharge. In all, the poke here is good but it's overpriced in my opinion.
google avatar

Tay L.

Yelp
Very fresh fish and love all the flavors!!! They have a bunch of options of fish to choose from. For your base you get to choose from salad, rice, or half and half. You then get to choose your fish or multiple flavors of different kinds of fish, then they have 3 add on's of avocado, edamame and seaweed salad if you want any of those they are extra. The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is because the price for the portion size. The portions are really small compared to almost every other place I've been to, and the price is the most expensive out of all the places I've ever been to... I go to a lot of poke places too! I wish they would give you more fish for how much they charge. I would definitely recommend this place for fish quality and flavors!
google avatar

Mka N.

Yelp
I had an ono (delicious) poke bowl at Ali'i Hawaiian Grill in Torrance CA. Hawaiian and Spicy Tuna fresh from Hawai'i with yummy seaweed salad and bean sprouts. You can customize the bowl as you wish. Also got their ono kiawe smoked ahi dip. Miss the potato chips because I'm gluten free. Wonderful restaurant in South Bay (also in El Segundo and Manhattan Beach). I highly recommend the restaurant.
google avatar

Fifi C.

Yelp
Since first trying this place out we've asked our drug rep to get us food for our staff from here and everybody loved it. I ordered online again last Saturday and there was a $1 reward from my last order. It was for my parents and they do love it and they've been eating poke longer than me. Staff was friendly as usual.

Carol E.

Yelp
Used to be really good, haven't been recently. Just came and the portion sizes are pretty small for the price in comparison to other local shops. poke was also kinda salty. Service was good! Wish I could say i'd come back.
google avatar

James K.

Yelp
This spot is full on Hawaiian Island poke shop vibes. Small chill and doesn't have to try hard because the poke is legit! So good. I wishes I lived nearby. I'd eat here all the time. Service was spot on. I'll be back every time I'm in the area for sure
google avatar

Mark E.

Yelp
I can eat at this place everyday!! The Salmon and Sweet/spicy poke is my favorite! Of course I'd recommend all the pokes are good! Some reviewers said the poke was lacking flavor..lol...Of the 10x now going here...Every single time Mine was tasty delicious poke! No need for hot sauce or anything else!...The rice is perfectly cooked...I always get the Mac Salad on the side! The owner is from Hawaiian and makes a Mean MacSalad! Its thick fresh and the just right consistency! ...The Torrance Location is walk-in only! So its order and go...which I'm totally fine with as I just eat it at home or at the park!...
google avatar

Danica L.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for a while now. I came here around 6:30-7pm and most of the fish were already gone except for 2/3. The place is a little small, so there were no seats or tables to sit and eat. I ordered a bowl with rice, Onion Limi, 1/2 Hawaiian and 1/2 Ginger Soy. I think the quality of the fish is good; however, the portion size is very small for what it is. Maybe if there were additional sides it would be worth it, but otherwise it's more of an appetizer than an entree. The service was very good as staff very friendly, nice, and efficient. Overall, the fish good but not worth the portion size.
google avatar

Claudia D.

Yelp
Food, service, great staff! I came in super hungry after a workout and was so dramatic (politely dramatic). Brycen was so helpful and patient! The food was amazingly fresh always yummy.
google avatar

Emma L.

Yelp
Fish quality and flavors were good but the rice was very dry and almost inedible. It might be rice that's been sitting out for too long..
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
Went here at noon on a Thursday and there were only 3 kinds of poke (2 tuna and 1 salmon) which was quite disappointing. The display case looked pretty sad and lacked much options for poke. I wanted to give this place a try because I've heard it's one of the more popular poke places in the area, but was greatly disappointed. I got their Hawaiian ahi and shoyu salmon; both of which lacked any flavor. I got the poke bowl and they put such a small amount of fish, but so much rice. It was about $18 total which I don't think it was worth it at all. I really wanted to like this place, but there are definitely better local poke shops that taste better and for better value in the area.

Yelp
Found this spot thru yelp since I was missing Hawaii and pokeee and OMGGGG highly recommend. It's a small and nice spot for Togo poke Fish was fresh- I stood there and was indecisive of what poke to get. They let you sample the flavors they have. I end up getting Hawaiian and sweet and spicy with half rice and salad and a side of there crab salad. I couldn't wait for to get home to eat it. I sat in the car and ateeee. Reminiscing about Hawaii. I finished the bowl lol--- I forgot to take a picture haha I went back the following week lol Togo orders only. No indoor seating
