The Best Restaurants Near NYC’s Early Voting Places - New York - The Infatuation

"Your post voting move in Crown Heights should be the doubles at Ali’s Roti Shop. They’re a Trinidadian specialty filled with curry chickpeas, and we’d suggest ordering them spicy with ample amounts of tamarind sauce." - hannah albertine, nikko duren

The Best Restaurants in Crown Heights | Eater NY

"Ali’s is a reliable option for quick, reasonably priced meal with lots of flavor. Stop by for West Indies dishes such as its plentiful doubles — stuffed with chana — or the curry goat roti. Bolstered by its popularity, this Trinidadian restaurant, located on Utica Avenue, has expanded with additional outposts at Francis Lewis Boulevard and on Flatbush Avenue." - Emma Orlow

Google
I loooveee this place!!!! The doubles are delicious and so is the curry chicken roti and poulorie, the lady at the register is always nice. Whenever I go to the Bronx I have to stop for some delicious Trini goodies!!! The only negative is that they only take cash but other than that, this place is a 2 thumbs up!!!

Google
Whoever rated the quality/taste of food above 3 stars, especially the basics like doubles and aloo pie is out of their minds or really haven't explored other restaurants or home kitchens. If you know authentic, well-seasoned, flavorful food, don't waste your time or money to go here. Sad to say, but agree with other reviewers, it's satisfactory if you're really craving sub-par Caribbean dishes.

Google
First and last time at Ali’s! Doubles is not authentic trini doubles the Channa tasted like it for roti not doubles! I was so excited to find a place in the Bronx for doubles because I moved from queens but since trying this place I’ll take that drive to queens when I want doubles! Also asked for bandania sauce and didn’t get any if he didn’t have he should have said something!

Google
Would have been 5 stars if it was not cash only. The food was great, super tasty, and a lot of it for the price per item! We got chicken roti and channa and potato roti, it was so much food. Both were delicious but the potato and channa one was a little dry. Next time I hope to get some hot sauce to add to it. Everyone enjoyed there food and we will definitely go back. It did take a while to get our order, like a long long time. So next time I hope to call in an order, so I can get this food within my lunch break. There was a ton of people in and out ordering. There are no places to sit in the establishment. It is only a take out place and it is cash only. The lady at the window was kind and let us ask all the questions. This place was 👍, try it out!

Google
By far one of THE best roti spots in NYC yes I tired the others and can’t compete with the warm smiles and services at this place but a even warmer doubles dough and perfect combination of tang and spice if you choose to add the sauces / after that the rest is history the beef / succulent savory huge chucks the chicken the same way. I broke my fast to eat those meats to give yall this review 😂 so I’m telling you this place makes sure to always take the extra step to serve superior Quality and that’s all we really need in life is love and good food 🙏🗽yall come try it oh and it’s cheep eats I bet Chaya I come here few times I month no cap 🧢🤷🏽‍♀️😎💰update with pics 💕💕

Google
I am genuinely happy with the outcome of my visit here. I've tried many many trinidadian places in New York and so far this is up there as my number 1 spot. I went to get some doubles and pholourie first because we all know , if you can make good doubles, everything else should follow. The prices are incredibly fair, 2$ for a doubles and 2$ for 12! pholourie ( Little fried bread like balls with a dipping sauce) The taste of the food is great, It reminds me of home. I will definitely have to go back and try their other menu items in the future because their food is tasty, large portions and affordable. The service is quick and friendly as well and the restaurant itself has a nice feel to it with the decor. A+

Google
I used to love going here back in the days, and now I went back for the first time in a while, and I see its in a new location newly renovated spot, and i love that for the couple. My only gripe is with the young lady at the counter. She can stand to use some patience when dealing with people and all-around customer service training. If I hand you my money in your hand, then that's how I expect it back , not slammed down in front of me and rushed out the way for the next person.

Google
I am not even from the islands and I love caribbean food. I grew up around trinidadian and Jamaican friends and lemme tell you... between me and you.......trini food better --- 🫣🤣...don't get mad!!!! It's only because of the roti....😂🤣. I always came there for the roti with the curry chicken I will eat it boneless or bone in. Don't let me catch y'all eating with a fork eating the roti 👀😐🤨 . Listen I know I keep talking about this place and I'll stop but listen I will eat roti for breakfast lunch AND DINNER. Ain't no games out here.....trini food it's so soothing. I wish they had others stores. Roti is a lot of work to make so I hope this continues to do well thank you for your service !! 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹

Yelp
I discovered new flavors during my meal at Ali's Roti Shop. The cooking technique is impressive. The team balances knowledge with friendly service. This restaurant gets mentioned in my conversations. This place belongs in any discussion of city dining.
google avatar

Sadia H.

Yelp
They have reopened! There's a 10 to 15 mins wait after you order, and usually a line of people ordering so b be prepared to be patient. There's barely any parking for people driving, so bring someone to double park. The place opens at 10 am & cash only for now. The $2 doubles are delicious! The best I've had! The puri/poori is made fresh, the pepper is perfect & the chana is so flavorful! This is a minority family owned business. The owner works on site with his family, give them a visit! Happy Yelping!

Yelp
Ali's is a must-visit for anyone looking for a memorable Roti. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply indulging in good food, this restaurant delivers on all fronts. Highly recommended!

Shevonne L.

Yelp
Ali Roti shop, I am giving you three stars you may deserve 5 or 4 stars, the reason for three stars , Ali's egg ball, are so small, smaller than a soft ball, they look like they were made with quail eggs , charging $5.00 for one , are you kidding me, for $5.00, you must do way better than this, also they made it with the least amount of Cassava/yuca, come on , its robbery!!!stop it , Eggs also went down!!!s, Stop robbing your customers . Very disappointed customer!!!!
google avatar

Allen B.

Yelp
I got a chicken roti and doubles, both were flavorful. The roti was a nice portion of filling, I didn't eat it all in one sitting. Service was decent.

Julius W.

Yelp
Very good roti. My wife and I ask for extra gravy on our curry chicken. This is the first place we tried "Doubles", a carribean delicacy and they were delicious.
google avatar

Yanagetia W.

Yelp
I just finished my order that was made at 5:30pm. The roti was good, but I was told by my daughter who had the doubles that the chickpeas were undercooked. We have had your doubles in the past, and they have been outstanding,. Please make sure they stay on point. We don't want to go anywhere else. Thank you.
google avatar

Kary D.

Yelp
Not authentic. Very disappointed. Weird texture and taste. Chicken roti was inedible. Doubles were awful & tasted microwaved.

Gabrielle T.

Yelp
Best Trini food in NYC ..... periodt I love their dubles with chutney , shrimp and the list goes on. No dish is a disappointment
google avatar

Patricia L.

Yelp
The food is deliciouso " sucking the curry out of the bone lol the chicken is tender and the salt fish was prepared properly and it was very fresh. The service was friendly and the older lady was very pleasant when she was taking my order. I love the roti, the kitchen is clean from what can see through the glass and the prices are worth it because the food is fresh, not overly seasoned.

Joel A. B.

Yelp
Somewhat disappointed, the roti itself had practically nothing inside, looking and tasting like what one would expect to be a "tear-up-shirt". The sauce for both the beef and chicken appeared as if just water had been recently in the preparation process, so it was quite watery. There was ample beef and chicken in the stew. The taste was as if a cook in training was just trying. DON'T THINK I WILL BE BACK THERE.

Chelby M.

Yelp
Best roti i have ever had but this morning i was told i cant get a saltfish roti because she cooked to many bakes so i was denied service because apparently they didnt make enough saltfish. That shouldnt be a reason to tell someone they cant eat. Its not as if they were out she was saving it for someone else when im a paying customer she would have gotten more out of me buying 6 rotis then bakes and saltfish horrible customer service. I walked from east ny for that food to be told no for a dumb reason neva going back. Neither would the 6 people i was suppose to feed at work

Yelp
I moved to jersey and I was craving doubles and dhal on a Sunday. I am so grateful to find Ali's shop. I called and order for pick up which was so easy. Whoever I spoke to was really sweet and professional. Food was good, wish it was a little more spicy but I'm happy. I also wish I took more pictures but I demolished the dhal and rice before writing this review lol Cannot wait to order again.
google avatar

Saunsarae M.

Yelp
I was looking for good roti near bay plaza. Although this was a 17mi drive, it was worth it. There wasn't any parking but there's a bike lane right in front. The store is bright and clean. They only take cash! I ordered a chicken curry roti with bone (because I prefer dark meat). It came quickly. It was huge. I ate half one day. It was even better the second day.
google avatar

Shanece R.

Yelp
The food was pretty good, the service okay, and the wait time was quick. Inside the restaurant was clean with a nice island vibe. The menu is has a nice selection of food priced at reasonable prices. I ordered a medium curry chicken, 2 dhal puri roti, order of pholourie, 2 tamarind sauce, and 2 currant rolls; all for $24.50.
google avatar

Jazmine A.

Yelp
Finally found a roti place close to me in the Bronx. I got the chicken and channa roti. It was really good. I was really impressed by the pholourie. It was my first time trying it and I couldn't stop eating them. I will definitely will be back. I hope they decide to do deliveries soon.
google avatar

Anjali G.

Yelp
Food wasn't even halfway good, the roti big no MC, dey eh even put no kinda pepper sauce, dey eh ask yuh if yuh want pumpkin, no pepper nothing. The roti big and tasteless. The chicken eh even taste like it cook all the way, had to throw it out. Doh talk bout d duck, like dey went Guyana to get dat duck. First of all, the duck wasn't ducking, is 2 lil piece of duck mix with chicken ... steupsss. Real tief head!!! How yuh go mix duck with chicken and then want to sell it as a duck roti. The tambran balls were horrible. Lord father put a hand!! That meal sent my entire family to the bathroom!! Never again. Next time we will go to queens.
google avatar

Flower D.

Yelp
So happy we don't have to go all the way to crown heights for our favorite trini food. Thank you so much Ali's you never disappoint XoXo
google avatar

Sarita R.

Yelp
I visited their new location today (9/9/23) and ordered their doubles. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment! The Chana (chickpeas) was extremely firm and the barra wasn't even barra it was more of a roti texture with an extremely bitter after taste. I usually go to Queens for doubles and was excited to see this West Indian restaurant in the Bronx, but It was such a disappointment. Doubles is a staple snack in Trinidad and it's a misfortune if a non West Indian were to eat Ali's doubles and left with a negative intake on thinking this is the way Doubles is supposed to taste. Doubles is an amazing snack, Ali's Roti shop does no justice and I highly recommend they work on improving their recipe or educating their Chef.... Or whom ever was the cook today.

Yelp
We have been going to Ali's for years, so long that we have gotten to know the owners and have became regulars on the occasional basis. Ali's have always been slapping, with great portions, soft Roti and great curry to go with it. Sometimes I've ordered just the Roti with the curry sauce (Minus the meat) and they have never minded accommodating that request for us, nor have they tried to beat us over the head with non-listed fees for ordering it that way. I'll continue to give them my hard earned money, as they have always treated us great and the quality of food is consistent. Furthermore, they have very reasonable prices and are not stingy with their portions. We are waiting for the re-opening! Please stop starving us and come back Ali!

Peter C.

Yelp
Ambiance is worst than a medieval gruel eating place. Dark and gloomy, dirty tables, and not an encouraging/welcoming place to eat. Out of so many Trinidad staples ie: doubles, pholorie, aloo pie, and much more. The answer from the lead lady was that it was Sunday ma boy and they go home early, so they don't make this and that. And I saw some macaroni pie asked for a slice, but was told "no", it's reserved for plate meals. Then why have it on the menu advertised as being sold by the slice? You would never go to a Mexican restaurant and hear that they are out of tortillas, out of salsa, out of tacos, out of gotditas, so give me a break Ali's Trinidad "great food." Same Trinidad excuses. If you have a menu, then provide what you advertise, or take it off your menu, or close down the place. Good credit to Double A'S on Fulton or Royal Bakery, they have every single thing that they advertise. Shame on you Ali's, I came all the way from California and wanted to enjoy a plethora of Trinidad eateries and food, Ali's you are horrible, you should be ashamed. Take a week off shut down your places, retrain yourself, your staff, and make a commitment to changing your behavior. And watch, some Hispanic/American/other non Trinidadian group who know how to run a restaurant, acquire Trinidad food making skills and take over the so called market you think you have cornered.

Yelp
Love the chicken buss up shot or chicken roti! Going to Ali's feels like am back in Trinidad. Everything on the menu is good!

Venus M.

Yelp
To big no favors, no sauce and to dry chicken to big. Expensive. Roti is snack and not a meal. This roti was not well prepared

Darlene O.

Yelp
Today I went to Ali's Roti Shop I got two boneless Chicken Roli and one Chicken bone in Roti and two Doubles. The Chicken Roti is my favorite. I travel all the way from Manhattan to get them

Yolonda A.

Yelp
The curry chicken roti is delicious! The only down side is; cash only! I hardly carry cash anymore .

Leo Jr P.

Yelp
great food. The doubles is not Trinidad doubles but everything else tastes great. i wouldn't change a thing. I just wish I can see prices online.
google avatar

Angelique T.

Yelp
OMGG A MUST ! I been going here since I was a little girl in the Bronx and now I'm in New Jersey and travel from NJ to Bronx to get my phulouries and Doubles. Super in expensive extremely sweet and overall worth the try
google avatar

Wanda A.

Yelp
Great service and delicious food. The price is not bad for the time that we are in. I am glad they reopened.

S T.

Yelp
The food was good and the service was great! Good place to stop and grab some roti and curry chicken.
google avatar

Nile N.

Yelp
One of the few shops in the Bronx with Roti this good. I never have to wait long to order whenever I arrive, and the food never disappoints. Their prices are reasonable, and the portions are great! It would be hard to eat a whole roti in one seating. Cash Only.
google avatar

Ian H.

Yelp
Good food and friendly staff. Always a stop while in the Bronx. Call in advance to order because parking can be scarce.

Kim R.

Yelp
Ya'll!!!! If you love curry roti like me, come here! I waited patiently for them to open. Well worth the wait. My first order was the doubles with spice. I loved them. They were soft and the curry taste like they were delivered from the gods. The chick peas inside were just right. Not mush and not hard. I will tell you my 2nd order was bigger lol. I got the boneless curry chicken roti. COME THRU SPICE! I am a spice head and when u get the extra spice on the side (u won't really need it) it really turns it up a notch. From first bite I closed my eyes and imagined Trinidad. My goodness what a treat! ( in the words of my favorite uncle) Don't walk, RUN! The space is bright and clean. All window. The service is sweet too. A full family of smiles. The menu has a nice amount to choose from so trust me there is something for everyone's budget. After all, the doubles are only $2!!! My boneless curry chicken roti was $15! Well worth it. I have potatoes, boneless chicken and a BIG Ol Roti Skin baby!!! Some dinner today and some lunch tomorrow. Please support a family owned business and enjoy a beautiful meal while daydreaming of the Caribbean Islands. Ps. I called my order in at 7:32pm & it was ready when I got there at almost 8pm. I also didn't have to wait long for my doubles either.

Carell H.

Yelp
I come here anytime I have a craving for food from back home in Trinidad, and when I want to stock up on trini snacks (preserved red mango, mango chow, tamarind balls, kurma, etc). Their aloo pies, doubles, and pholourie always hit the spot. Make sure to ask for channa (chickpeas) for your aloo pies since they don't add it unless you ask. You can also add pepper sauce and tamarind chutney to both the aloo pies and doubles. Their rotis are incredible, and always bursting with flavour. I've tried the dhalpouri rotis, not sure if they also sell buss up shut (paratha roti). Ali's is definitely the place to check out if you're a trini missing home, or if you'd like to try trini food :) Note: they're cash only, so make sure you have cash before going! Also, I think they might close earlier if they run out of some things, but I'm not 100% sure about that.
google avatar

Christina L.

Yelp
I love the doubles. I order shrimp doubles every single time and its perfect!!! Finally dont have to go all the way to Trinciti to get good doubles.
google avatar

Celeste E.

Yelp
Goat roti was okayish, I went back to try their doubles and pholourie and I regret it it was flavorless, the pholourie was hard while the tamarind sauce tasted nothing like tamarind and the doubles was like two fry bake and channa.
google avatar

Caroline W.

Yelp
Doubles dry, dual puri dry..bad attitude. Messed up my order of pholourie and 1 dhal puri. Gave a damn dry ass doubles. With her attitude, the food should be amazing!
google avatar

Amanda G.

Yelp
Great neighborhood caribbean spot for your roti cravings. They're located about the fifteen minutes from me so, I have no problems picking up some curry and roti when I get the itch. I've only ever purchased their dahl roti, doubles and goat curry, all of which were great. It's refreshing and nostalgic to get a taste of home whenever I miss my mother's cooking
google avatar

Cony C.

Yelp
This will probably be my go to spot for roti. I've had different rotis before but never from Trinidad. Good size portions. My goat roti had tons of goat. First I saw a lot of bones and thought I got gypped, but then as I was picking through it I realized there was tons of goat. They cleaned the goat very well, cutting out the extra fat but leaving on just enough where it melts in your mouth without feeling like you're swallowing mounds of grease. Most important, not salty! Doubles are new to me. Perfect on-the-go snack. The chickpeas we're seasoned properly and it had a similar taste to the roti, just a little bit sweeter. I also had the beef aloo and that was also a first for me. It almost reminded me of a beef shepherds pie sandwich. Was comfort food in a sandwich. I was so happy to find out they sold my favorite hot sauce, Matouk, the West Indian green bottle. You have to have this hot sauce with the roti to add some acidity. I can't eat roti without it! Best hot sauce ever if you like tons of flavor and a good kick! Place is small with a couple seats. Windows steamed so you can't even see from outside. Parking is rare, but I did find parking right in front. (Free street parking after 6 I think) I lived in New York my whole life but thanks for yelp I found this place and I will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
It's been about 14 years since I had roti. That's what happens when you move to the burbs... Anyhow, we were dropping off goods to a family member in the boggie down Bronx and decided to take a detour to Ali's Roti Shop. It was exactly what I expected. A takeout spot big enough to fit 3-4 customers at one time with home style West Indian food cooked by a family. We ordered the chicken roti and it was more than we expected. Each roti was big enough to feed two grown men. The roti was perfectly cooked with seasoned potatoes, delicious curry chicken and everything in it. It was so good that even my very picky teenage son enjoyed it. The great part is that Ali's Roti Shop will adjust the pepper/heat according to your tolerance and dietary restrictions. I like mine spicy! Ali's Roti is a keeper. You have got to try it.
google avatar

Petrill S.

Yelp
It's not many spots in the Bronx where you can get authentic Trini food, fortunately this is my go to one! I've been going to Ali's for years now and they make great doubles, roti and curries. If you have never had Trinidadian food this is a great place to try out. Very friendly and helpful staff. Food is made with love, patience and flavor. I recommend this spot, it's a great place to try something new.
google avatar

Christian D.

Yelp
Order the chicken chicken roti on a Friday and came back again on a Sunday! Very good quality food, great prices! My wife ordered oxtail with rice and peas w/ a side order of tamarind sauce. She loved it! My new go to restaurant for roti!
google avatar

Mei F.

Yelp
This is a hole in the wall place with great food. What makes me come back is the owner. She is the sweetest woman! Once I saw her give a neighborhood kid some cookies from the display case because he came to say hello to her. Another time, a man who probably did not have money to pay just ran out of the shop with his food without paying. She did not say a bad word or got upset. I respect her for doing that because no one knows another man's problem unless one walks in his shoes. If he could run away without paying, he must be going through something in his life. Onward with the food, the food is very tasty. I do expect that from a Trinie. She looks like a Guyanese though. My favorite is their rotis...any one of them. The doubles are very good as well. I sometimes would get the buss up shut to go so I could have them with my own curry at home. I wish her longevity!
google avatar

Ebony E.

Yelp
I like this shop. My family has been eating here randomly for years. The ladies are Trini to the bone and are friendly. The gentleman in the back is hilarious. In the past 2 years, I've been coming a lot for doubles which never disappoints. However, recently, I ordered a chicken roti. The size is amazing for the price, however, there were bones. I'm not a fan of roti (or anything wrapped) with bones. I won't be ordering roti from here again. What could be better about this restaurant is the location (double parking on white Plains road can be a hassle with police), and there should be more seating / in dining experience.
google avatar

Mel G.

Yelp
The doubles were extremely good--perfectly flavored w/a lil sweet kick to them. To me, that's reason alone to stop by and try. I also had the beef roti, which was huge (you can easily split this in half for 2 meals or to share w/a friend). It was very generous for the price. Otherwise, there are a few seats along the window, but is pretty much a takeout shop. All the food was well wrapped so that 25 minutes later, it was still nice and hot. Friendly customer service, too!
google avatar

Debra S.

Yelp
Doubles doesn't taste like doubles. Aloo pie was tasteless. Roti was okay but curry potatoes was watery.

Cammie S.

Yelp
food was disgusting!!!! curry chicken tasted weird! chicken wasnt fully cooked!! it smelt raw!! i would never eat from here again. Whoever say their food is good, needs to be in jail
google avatar

Syeda P.

Yelp
This spot right here gives you authentic trini vibe food. I've tried other roti shops and none are hitting like this. The lady that cooks them is a very nice woman.

Yelp
Wanted some traditional Trinidad food,so I , venture to Alis on White plains Rd, in the Bx. I had heard good things about it so I tried to stock up. WHAT A MISTAKE! I ordered a chicken roti, 6 roti skin and I got a currant roll. This is strictly take out. By the time I got home I was craving my food. Surprise#1 I was given a beef roti instead of the chicken that I ordered. It was tasteless & dry. No hint of traditional seasoning and no gravy.#2 The Dahl roti fell apart. The roti is supposed to be firm enough to pick up food. This one separated into layers and lentils were going everywhere. #3 The current roll was dry& tasteless, more like old , stale pastry. The 6 skins were bought to enjoy at a later day. Not sure now. Definitely not going back. My lineage is Guyana & Trinidad.
