The 33 Best Restaurants In Melbourne 2023

"Australians aren’t exactly known for being subtle, so when Northcote’s All Are Welcome was tagged with the line “Posh c*nts, good bread,” they spun it to their advantage and turned it into merch. And that anonymous artist was kinda right: you’ll pay more than average for the bread and pastries here, but they’re all well worth the price. There are just a handful of seats (same goes for the second location in Thornbury up the road), and while it’s open till 2pm, the excellent fennel-spiced pork sausage rolls and inventive fruit danishes can be sold out well before then, so you’ll want to arrive early." - ellen fraser

The 38 Essential Melbourne Restaurants

"After working as a pastry chef in Napa Valley’s three-Michelin-starred Restaurant at Meadowood, Boris Portnoy moved to Australia for a change of pace. His community-focused bakery, All Are Welcome, is located in a converted Christian Science Reading Room in the hip neighborhood of Northcote. Viennoiseries go way beyond the classic croissant; expect to find bostock piled with fruit, gooey chocolate babka, and a fancy spin on khachapuri. During the colder months, don’t pass up a slice of the medovnik, an impressive 10-layer Slavic honey-and-buttercream cake. Portnoy also cooks next door at Gray and Gray, an exciting Georgian wine bar he co-owns with winemaker Mitch Sokolin." - Audrey Bourget, Sharlee Gibb

The most popular bakery on High St! 🔥 Their bread is super famous here. I went a bit late, so only the regular options were left. Tried the Za'atar Feta & Honey Twist—fragrant, crispy, savory, and sweet all at once. Definitely something I'd go back for! The vibe is amazing too. People sitting in the sunlit alley, sipping coffee, chatting away. The perfect spot to unwind and soak in that relaxed atmosphere. ☀️

Great cafe that was buzzing on a weekend afternoon. We tried the sausage roll and nothing about it was ordinary - the tomato sauce was like a tomato x spicy salsa combo and the pastry and sausage was incredible!! We also tried the bread and butter pudding which was quite good but quite soggy (I think it is meant to be like that. I just hadn’t tried a bread and butter pudding before) The coffee was quite good and smooth, vibes and atmosphere was quite relaxed. Note this is a bakery not really a cafe so seating is fairly limited and it’s mostly for coffee and pastries, not like brunch etc!

Delicious taste experience for our first visit. Plain croissant crusty and buttery was delightful. Double shot short lattes excellent extraction. Decadent trio of baguette, French butter and La Tur 3 cheese soft and creamy was a treat. French butter is just a treat

🏠: @allarewelcomebakery 📍: High St, Northcote 📝: Rain or shine, All Are Welcome Bakery is always worth the visit ☔️☀️ Enjoyed the coziest morning at this adorable spot, indulging in the most heavenly brioche with crumble and flaky sausage roll 🥐🤤 Already planning my next visit! ❤️: I can still taste the rich, buttery texture and the sweet, crunchy crumble on top of the Crumble Brioche. And let's not forget about the sausage roll! A good sausage roll can be hard to come by, but they’ve nailed it. There were so many other tempting options as well, like the 🍐 Pear Danish, 💛 Passion Fruit Cream, 🧀 Pistachio Basque Cheesecake, and more!

Cute bakery. Lots of sweet and savoury treats unfortunately when I took the photo it was after lunch time so a lot of them have sold out. The coffee is really good and the service was fantastic. The bread loaves on the shelves look really good so will cone back for them. Had the croissant and the pistachio and pomegranate friand this time, both fantastic. Not the cheapest place to get treats but well worth the money.

Went into this café a few days ago and purchased a toastie and a croissant. When it arrived, it was cold and the middle was just a slab of cold bechamel. I asked one of the staff if we could heat it up, to which she replied we don’t do that here, despite being a bakery with multiple ovens and they had about 10 staff working. If a tiny hole in the wall can heat up a toastie, I’m sure you could too. Not surprised about all the other stuff too. Explains how they were able to over staff most days

If you blink you’ll miss this hole in the wall bakery and coffee shop. It’s the sort of joint none of the locals want to talk about because they don’t want riff raff from other suburbs crowding their favorite place. It reminds me of the cafes in Italy. You stop in, order an espresso and a pasty, stand anywhere you can and you’re done in 5 mins. Theres maybe one seat inside and tiny little tables and benches outside. The coffee is the best Melbourne has on offer and I bought a baguette to take home. Best bread I’ve eaten in years. This is a cracker of a place.

Delicious bread and delicious coffee. What more could you want? There’s a reason this place is always busy. Their soy flat whites are always perfectly hot and prepared quickly. And that rye bread with caraway seeds is to die for.

Yelp
A definite solid bakery/patisserie venue, as well as local friendly cafe. At the time of writing this I haven't been to Lune croissants, however the croissants and various other sweet treats from here are the best I've had in Melbourne, ever. There is also a good selection of fresh daily baked breads, the aforementioned patisseries as well as a good selection of savoury items. Oh and they sell coffee and coffee equipment. Good place to pick up beans when you need and have a snack while you're there. The downsides are limited and peculiar seating arrangements, and things selling out early- as you would come to expect.

Yelp
Absolute gem of a place! Coffee is exceptional (thank you all day) and the chicken pasty is to die for. Sandwiches are fully packed with yummy ingredients, maybe a little too much so can be a bit messy to eat. Staff are super friendly and they have a collection of breads, cheeses, olives and other goods you can purchase and make yourself a little picnic. Absolutely love it.
