Caribbean Bakery Allan’s Is Opening in Manhattan - Eater NY

"For more than 60 years, New Yorkers in search of Caribbean beef patties and fruit cakes soaked in rum have found their way to Allan’s. In Brooklyn, on a stretch of Flatbush lined with takeout counters selling roti, oxtail, and jerk, the offspring of Allan and Gloria Smith run a bakery that’s become known as a one-stop shop for Caribbean staples: hard dough bread, patties stuffed with saltfish, coconut rolls, and doubles. Its third-generation owners steered the business through the pandemic, when customers lined up for baked goods outdoors in masks, and opened a bar next door last October. This fall, they are expanding the company outside of Brooklyn for the first time with a location at 116B Allen Street, near Stanton Street. Unlike the original, which spans three street addresses along Nostrand Avenue, the Lower East Side shop is 400 square feet. The menu will be limited to the most popular items in Brooklyn, including Caribbean beef patties, coconut drops, codfish balls, bake and saltfish, and currant rolls. The approach: 'More depth than breadth,' says Christian Smith, the grandson of the bakery’s founders. Beyond the staples, there’s talk of selling ice cream cakes and black cakes, the rum-soaked fruit cakes that are eaten around Christmas. All of the baked goods at the shop will be made in Brooklyn. Allan and Gloria Smith, the bakery’s founders, started Allan’s out of a station wagon in Brooklyn. They opened a storefront at 425 Saratoga Avenue, near Eastern Parkway, in 1961, and later moved to their longtime home at 1109 Nostrand Avenue, near Maple Street. Customers still crowd the counter for custom cakes and Trinidadian doubles, which are sold on weekends. The bakery is almost as old as the West Indian Day Parade." - Luke Fortney

I ordered the chicken patty, a coffee with whole milk, and received a complimentary currant pastry. The chicken patty was encased in a dough that was wonderfully buttery, chewy, and flaky, providing a delightful textural experience. The chicken filling was flavorful and well-seasoned, with the chicken chopped into small pieces that made it easy to eat on the go. The complimentary currant pastry was a pleasant surprise, reminiscent of a cinnamon bun with its blend of spices, the sweetness of the currants, and the rich butteriness of the dough. The coffee was decent, nothing extraordinary, but it served its purpose. The service was excellent, with the friendly lady behind the counter adding a personal touch to the experience. The shop itself was charming, with a pleasant ambiance and a nice selection of Caribbean pastries. There was no wait time, and the overall experience was quite positive. I would certainly recommend this place to anyone looking for delicious Caribbean pastries and friendly service.

Allan’s Bakery is Caribbean-centric bakery that serves up a small menu of savory eats, sweet items, breads, and coffee and tea drinks. it’s a small modern bakery store located in the Lower East Side. there’s no real seating in the shop as it’s a compact space, but the interior is well organized, clean, and brightly lit. it seems to be a grab and go spot and it’s located only a couple of blocks from an F train stop. stopped here weeks ago and grabbed a drip coffee to go. coffee was solidly fine as it is via machine. this very much a store selling baked items, not a coffee shop. while the sweet items look good, i went for the savory and got a beef patty and a small bag of baked fried. the beef patty had a soft yet flaky crust—the beef filling is well-seasoned but not spicy. definitely a good small bite when you’re on the go or want something satisfying but not filling. the baked fried is basically small round pieces of fried bread that are slightly salted fluffiness and are rich bc they are fried but not oily. fried bake is typically paired with other savory eats like cheese or eggs or Trinidadian salt fish. to me, they were fine on their own almost like a fried dinner roll as a snack. the service is pleasant and quick. don’t think any baking is done on premises but the food is solidly good and different from your typical offerings around the Lower East Side.

My go to iced coffee & tea spot in the area ! Price is cheap compared to most in the area & the quality is great. They have dairy free milk options & organic agave which is rare to come by , I’ve been to many cafes and this is one of the only ones I’ve been too that offer agave & its organic . The teas are also organic . The little bakes are my favorite & only $2 for 5. 10/10 for quality & price . Store manager is v friendly & nice as well!

Unreal experience! Pastries are better and cheaper than most I’ve had in nyc. Got the veggie patty, coconut roll and a complimentary currant roll. So so good. AND a taste of some of the smoothies on the house. Service was great and so refreshing for this part of Manhattan 10/10 recommend.

Delicious baked goods. Very tasty beef, chicken, and veggies patties. Best coconut roll - juicy inside, crunchy outside. And lady that works there is always precise and friendly

Super nice and very helpful lady! And the rolls were soooo good!!! Tried the apple rollover and the currant rolls, both were amazing, fresh and fluffy with not extra sweetness! And for such an unbelievably affordable price! These guys are not charging NYC rates, lol (please keep it this way 🥹😅) Definitely will go back to try some more goods, they had many tempting ones
