What to Know About Rocket Empire Machine, The New Montavilla Food Hall - Eater Portland

"Years ago, Khadro Abdi ran a restaurant down the street by the same name. She served big platters of chicken and rice alongside cups of shaah, Somali tea with cardamom and cinnamon. After her landlord raised the rent, Abdi closed the restaurant, and focused on a line of Somali sauces. Now, Alleamin is back on Glisan, serving the same chicken and rice in Rocket Empire Machine. The menu also includes Ethiopian and Somali dishes like sambusas, soor (Somali grits), the Somali flatbread muufo, and an array of rotating stews and sauces." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The food was absolutely delicious! The lamb shank was perfectly cooked, it was so tender it just fell off the bone. Every dish was full of flavor . Everything we tried tasted amazing. Highly recommended for anyone who loves rich, flavorful food!

Fantastic food! We had the lamb shank plate (which was beautifully seasoned), and loved it so much we ordered a second one! We also had a berry smoothie that was fab! No added sugar or dairy and it was sweet and tasty! Thank you Alleamin!

I had an amazing experience at Alleamin African Kitchen. I came in for dinner around 7:30 PM with two of my friends, and from the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The owner was incredibly patient, kind, and genuinely hospitable. What really stood out was his generosity and dedication — we placed our initial order right before closing time, and even 15 minutes after they had officially closed, he was still willing to prepare another order for us while cleaning up. That kind of service is rare and deeply appreciated. The food was absolutely delicious, and as a kind gesture, he even gave me the remaining smoothie from the blender that he had made for my friend. It was a small touch, but it spoke volumes about the kind of people running this place. Great food, great vibes, and truly outstanding service. I’ll definitely be coming back and highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for a genuine and flavorful dining experience.

Popped into Rockwood Market Hall after a long walk and decided to try something new, I'm very glad I did. The plate I had from Alleamin African Kitchen, tucked into the back corner of the main dining area, was some of the best food I've had in a very long time. My (HUGE!) $18 plate consisted of complexly spiced stewed red lentils, tender beef and vegetables, a fresh salad, and chewy, hot flatbread. Every part of the meal was delicious and interesting. In addition to the amazing food, the people running the place were so nice and welcoming and had a lovely chat with me about how they spice their lentils (because if I ever figure it out, I'm going to be eating lentils a lot more often!). Simply some of the best food I've ever had in a city that seems to be full of Expensive But Just Okay food spots, probably the best Food Pod restaurant I've ever eaten at. I would give eleven stars if I could, and I will be back to try everything else on the menu as soon as I can.

I got the goat stew for my daughter and me. They were sold out of injeras, but the owner offered to substitute with rice and I was hesitant. Worried about the rice being dry. The aroma from the kitchen smelled so good, I decided to take a chance and order anyways. I am so glad I did! Everything was amazing!! The goat was tender, the cabbage and salad complimented the stew very well, and the rice was delicious. My toddler ate it all. We will definitely be back for more!

First time in the Rockwood Market Hall, I was really glad we checked out the Alleamin African Kitchen. What was initially a pit stop for sambusa’s, turned out to be a full on dinner! Everything was tasty and homemade, and the staff were excellent! Highly recommend the yedoro wot and the lamb and chicken sambusa.

Absolutely loved our experience here! The customer service was amazing—so patient and welcoming, with great recommendations. We had the goat stew with injera and the goat meat with rice, and both dishes were incredibly flavorful, well-seasoned, and came in generous portions. You can really taste the care in every bite. We’ll definitely be back!
