The 25 Best Restaurants In The Hudson Valley 2024 - Hudson Valley - The Infatuation

"Alleyway Ice Cream has a tiny window hidden off of Saugerties’ main drag. They’ve developed a bit of a cult following for inventive flavors like Thai tea cookies and cream and ube heath bar crunch, and locals wait with bated breath every year for them to reopen for the summer. Stop by on a warm afternoon when you’ll see families and teenagers hanging out on the shaded back patio. Or you can take your cup to go and walk through Saugerties’ various boutiques nearby.  " - Chanize Thorpe, Anne Cruz, Clare Lagomarsino

The Perfect Weekend Guide for Eating and Drinking in the Hudson Valley - Eater NY

"Alleway claims  that it is the “world’s smallest and hardest to find ice cream shop.” While they’re not far off, it is absolutely worth the effort to seek out this 80-square-foot spot, housed in a former linen closet down an alleyway in Saugerties. Owner Julian Hom draws from his world travels, specifically throughout Asia, to come up with flavors. Best-selling scoops include Ube Heath Bar Crunch, Thai Tea Cookies and Cream, and Sour Cream and Blueberry." - Juliet Izon

The Belgian Chocolate is so good—not too sweet and not too salty. It tastes like real chocolate and sometimes if you’re lucky it’s a bit crunchy. The lemongrass ice cream is delicious, and vegan too! The Ube Heath Crunch Bar was also excellent—crunchy, with some chocolate.

Google
So happy to have stumbled across this ice cream shop! The worker who took our order was super sweet and the ice cream was delicious. We had the mint chocolate chip and the Belgian chocolate!

Jennifer Wentland

Google
This was recommended by a friend and it was amazing! It is a little tricky to find, but worth it! It is in an alleyway. The flavors were sooo creative and different. The server let us try a few flavors before purchase. The vegan dairy free Lemon Poppy was absolutely to die for! The Ube Heath Bar Crunch and Thai Tea cookies and cream were delicious. Just the right amount of ice cream for the price. Absolutely delicious! I highly recommend!

Google
I have been coming to Alleyway every summer for many years now and it’s safe to say they have the BEST ice cream! Every flavor is phenomenal. The staff is always friendly and goes out of their way to accommodate!

Google
Ice cream (Thai) was very tasty. I enjoyed it, it was my birthday that day. I did a hike on Overlook Trail in Woodstock. Your ice cream was recommended to me from my server in Yum-Yum in Red Hook. Thanks for the Adventurous flavors. Maybe think of a flavor for chocolate freaks like me. Dark Swiss with raspberries, who knows what else ?

Sharon Gremer

Google
My husband and I stopped in for ice cream on Monday night and I have to thank you for the most delicious ice cream, but mostly for the amazing staff working. There was a pretty long line but when we got to the window we were greeted with a happy face and extremely kind service — thanks for doing what you do 🩷!

Google
I cannot get over how amazing Alleyway Ice Cream is. My only regret over visiting Alleyway on my recent trip was not buying even more pints to take home. The Thai Tea Cookies & Cream is the single best flavor I’ve ever had. It is so delicate, flavorful, not too sweet at all and delicious. The Ube Heath Bar is equally exceptional. Fingers crossed we start to see their pints in more stores down state; otherwise will continue to go out of my way to see the amazing kind staff there on my way to and from upstate.

Google
This place is amazing. Every flavor is just the best thing you've ever had. My favorite is the Thai iced tea cookies and cream. It is absolutely wild. If you haven't tried it yet, go. The place is absolutely spectacular.

Yelp
The unique flavors caught my eye and Alleyway did not disappoint! I got the triple with sour cream blueberry, Ube heath bar crunch and Thai tea cookies and cream. The sour cream blueberry was a refreshing flavor with the tartness of sour cream balancing well with the sweet blueberry. My favorite was the Thai tea cookies and cream which had a strong Thai tea profile, and the Oreo cookies providing a satisfying contrast. They close for the season end of October so would recommend coming soon!

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place after seeing some of the unique flavor profiles!! I was really taken with the ube heath bar flavor but the Thai tea cookies and cream tasted a little bland in comparison. The ice cream itself tasted super fresh! Prices are high at $8 for two scoops. There are some tables if you want to sit and enjoy or take your ice cream to go wander around the Main Street.

Yelp
It really is in an alleyway haha it's a walk up counter window. What a great gem. Amazing ice cream with unique flavors like matcha salted pistachio and Thai cookies and cream. The buttermilk strawberry is AMAZING and like an elevated yummier version of Hagen Daz ice cream. The Belgian chocolate is rich. The sugar cone was fresh. The vanilla ice cream is dog friendly and a pup cup portion is free. My puppy was so happy. They accept credit cards. Mini portion was $5. The next size was $6. Lots of seating in the alleyway. The teens working the counter were great. Highly recommend!

Yelp
During our trip we found a couple of ice cream spots and tried this place not once but twice. The worst thing that could've happened was my wife tried the Thai tea cookies & cream! She loves the flavor so much we ended up coming twice just so she could get it. I ended up getting the buttermilk strawberry during one visit and the chocolate in a waffle cone on the next. Both the flavors were good and creamy and the waffle cone tasted fresh and was one of the best waffle cones I've ever had. Our dog also liked the pup cup on a hot summer day. I just hope my wife doesn't make me drive 2 hours for ice cream. Hopefully, they will start selling it in stores.

Yelp
Grabbed a Cinnamon Toast Crunch cone on an evening walkabout with the kids and wifey. It was delicious (cinnamon was not subtle but also didn't dominate. It's really well done!) and the guy behind the counter was super sweet to the kiddos. Love this place. It's literally in the alleyway so if you don't find it using Maps, follow the signs!
google avatar

Sana K.

Yelp
Cute ice cream spot in a literal alley! They keep a sign on the main street telling you it's in the alley. They have the most unique flavors! You get to try before you buy and they are not stingy with the samples. The tip jars are so cute. You can vote dogs/cats. I was happy to see it was even. I loved the ube heath bar crunch. My favorite candy with my fav color in an ice cream!! I got the mini size which is usually the perfect amount. Next time I might have to get a bigger size! Service was great !
google avatar

Cyree J.

Yelp
Excellent ice cream, but a weird seating situation. The cones are top notch. If you're in the area, be sure to check it out
google avatar

Flinty_backpack8

Yelp
When I say this is the best ice scream I've Ever had I mean it the flavors are extravagant and I love the little place where you can sit and it never takes long to get the ice cream.

Yelp
Stopped by after lunch. Amazing flavors. Had the Thai Tea Cookies and Cream and Ube Heath Bar Crunch, brother had the same and also the Key Lime Crunch, friend had the Ube Heath Bar Crunch, Key Lime Crunch, and the Madagascar Vanilla. All so so good. Definately a reason to visit Saugerties!!

Yelp
This has been the go to shop for ice cream indulgence in our area since it opened. This season has been a bit different as the variety of flavors is down, and today is the first time the ice cream hasn't been up to the standards we have come to expect. Thai tea cookies and cream tasted like they forgot the Thai tea. I love this little shop, and the owner reached out to me to ensure me that they are committed to providing the quality I've come to expect. Thanks, and keep grinding.

Yelp
Love their ice cream. They have current flavors lust on their website so check it out before going. This place is what's its named. It is literally on an alleyway with a open window service. They seem to have a store front toobut it's not open. I had the key lime crunch with the cone. Mini size on the pic was such a big scoop. So good. Not sour at all. It was perfect. I want go back the next day for another scoop. My kids had the beligian chocolate and buttermilk strawberry. Both they say were good. It's located in A cute town of Saugerties. Take a walk and enjoy so ice cream. It's what vacation is all about.

Yelp
Years ago I saw this place after dinner and was like we must eventually come back! Years later we're staying in Saugerties and after dinner of course came here. Sat in the back and all ate our delicious ice cream. Very good ice cream and just a cute little sitting area, it was perfect as one of the last trips of our summer.

Yelp
It really is fantastic ice cream by an owner who cares. After trying all the flavors over the course of several visits--I recommend trying a scoop of each--they're all so great that I don't even have a favorite and none were disappointments. The only wrong flavor is not to go.
google avatar

RoyGBiv S.

Yelp
Eight bucks for a scoop of ice cream in a cone! Fool me once... Ice cream was good, cone was stale, won't be back.
google avatar

Joann L.

Yelp
As a fan of ice cream, this was the number one place I had to go too during my trip. Sadly, it was not opened the first time I attempted to come here but I made sure to check the time and come back again when it was opened. They had such unique ice cream flavors I had a hard time picking one. Their flavors rotate and I definitely recommend checking their social media or website to see which flavors they have at the moment. They also have vegan flavors as well. I decided to go with the Thai Tea Cookies and Cream and it was absolutely amazing. The flavors went so well together and it was so unique but neither flavors were too overpowering and I was not expecting the combination to taste so good together. Honestly all the flavors sounded amazing but this one was definitely a 10/10 for me. Highly recommend coming here the next time you are craving ice cream!

Yelp
If there is one place for ice cream you need to visit in the Hudson Valley- Catskills area it is Alleyway Ice Cream. This little hidden nook in the small town of Saugerties is serving up creative flavors that you won't just see anywhere and are not just interesting, but tasty to the palate as well. The first visit I had there it was a hot summer day, so grabbing some ice cream was super refreshing especially after a hike. I got the Ube heath crunch and the thai iced tea cookies and cream flavors on a cone. My favorite of the two was the Thai iced tea one which had an intense flavor of the Thai iced tea that melded well with the cookies blended in the ice cream. If you want to take some home with you, you can also ask them to prepare a pint of any flavor to take back home. I highly recommend checking them out. Not just great ice cream, but awesome and friendly staff too.

Lance C.

Yelp
Can't say it's great. ridiculously overpriced for ice cream, definitely not worth it. for their selling point being location, can't say the alley is that comfortable.
google avatar

Daniel Y.

Yelp
Blink and you'll miss it and regret it and compensate by ordering more scoops than you should. The variety of ice cream flavors served by Alleyway Ice Cream is delightful. Ube Heath Bar Crunch? Honeycomb Chocolate Swirl? Thai Tea Cookies & Cream? Yes to all of those! Get your scoops in a cone or a cup and hang out in the patio area that feels like a hidden garden that only insiders know about. All the flavors have something unique to them, but none are so overpowering that it will turn you away. Give it all a try. I am not a chocolate fan, but the chocolate flavors were actually quite a treat. You don't need a VIP card to get into Alleway Ice Cream, but it sure feels great to be part of the "club". Count me in any day of the week!

Yelp
Delicious ice cream and fun, creative flavors. We drove into town specifically to try this place and it was well worth it. It's a really cute spot, literally in an alley, where you order at the window. They have a nice outdoor seating area next door. Service was friendly and quick. We really enjoyed the flavors we picked, the ice cream was tasty and creamy. We loved the fun flavors offered. I would definitely come back!

F. P.

Yelp
The best ice cream in the area by quite a margin (and we have tried (too) many stores). They gave some ice cream to our dog, who also seemed delighted!

Yelp
Man. I love ice cream and this place knocked it out of the park. Ube was out of this world. Pistachio was amazing too. Will need to change my plans just so I can have this one more time before leaving.
google avatar

Barbara K.

Yelp
The best especially the key lime crunch snd strawberry. My daughter liked I think matcha cookies and cream. Lemon with poppy seed was ok . U gotta go. Great seating
google avatar

Yelp
OMG! Best ice cream ever! It's rare that I make it my goal to get ice cream but I am so glad I did and my husband found this amazing ice cream place he took me to. Sure, we have great ice cream in NYC, Van Leeuwen, Malai, Morgenstern's, Oddfellows, etc. But this Alleyway Ice Cream beats them all! I absolutely love the Ube. But the Thai Tea and Keylime one is also very good. The portions are nice and staff is super nice. I'd probably drive 2 hours up to Saugerties to get my ice cream fix.
google avatar

Jeana P.

Yelp
Best ice cream I've ever had! Cannot pick a favorite flavor. The staff is always sweet and the service is quick. They'll always offer a scoop for your pup, just another perk!
google avatar

Lauren G.

Yelp
Deeeeelicious!!! You know you're in for a good ice cream experience when you can smell the homemade cones from a distance. The ube heath bar crunch was by far my favorite. Also tasted toasted coconut and Thai tea cookies & cream. The waffle cone was very necessary! Hoping to make it back there soon!! Also- the guys working there were very nice!

Rosalita C.

Yelp
It was okay... Not the best ice cream ever, but the guys who work there were really nice!
google avatar

Erika B.

Yelp
Ube health bar forever! We are pumped when the season starts and love the most delicious Icecream in the region!
google avatar

Phil C.

Yelp
No sundaes, no indoor seating. Just outstanding, homemade ice cream served from a window in - you guessed it - an alleyway (where there is, in fact, some outdoor seating). Absolutely worth a visit!

Robin B.

Yelp
I had tried the Thai Tea Cookies & cream about a month ago, when I bought a pint at Bistro to-go on rt.28. After I got home I saw that the pint was 12 dollars!!! I was shocked! I never paid more than 6 dollars for a pint of ice cream & this was twice as expensive! I hoped that I would like it & I did. This flavor tasted exactly like Thai sweetened iced tea. When I went to Alleyway in person on Partition st. I had to walk around to find this little place but I finally did- I got a waffle cone with Ube Heath bar crunch. I enjoyed every bit. I

Yelp
LOVE this ice cream shop that is literally in an Alley in this beautiful town. What a great concept. You can tell the owner loves what he does and in my book, that's the main ingredient for success! His flavors are so creative and I'm not surprised he's being recognized as one of the best in NY! I absolutely recommend this shop to everyone and will be looking forward to our next trip there to try more flavors!
google avatar

Yelp
The ice cream is absolutely amazing and the staff is always kind and helpful.Unusual flavors, but the staff explain them well.
google avatar

Stephanie T.

Yelp
Highly recommend trying the Thai tea cookies & cream ice cream. I love Thai tea and cookies & cream, this combines both of my favorites together. It is creamy with pieces of cookies & cream.
google avatar

Tim P.

Yelp
This little ice cream place is in the alley but is delicious. Great service and a little oasis.

Tina B.

Yelp
The ice cream isn't overly sweet, and comes in unusual flavors. We tried the lemon poppyseed, lime, and Thai tea with cookies--all excellent. Very pleasant place to sit, too.
google avatar

Kimberly L.

Yelp
We planned our whole day around ice cream! Alleyway always hits the nail on the head. Their flavors are so delicious and unique. The ice cream is rich and creamy. Staff was helpful when we couldn't decide which flavors to pick! We stop every time we are remotely close.
google avatar

Shawn H.

Yelp
Outstanding ice cream. I actually ended up liking the chocolate even more than the ube (the Heath bar mixed in wasn't my favorite), and I'd love to try other flavors next time around too.
google avatar

Brianna S.

Yelp
Friends & I just so happen to stop after s day of hiking - If you're looking for quick, unique, well priced ice cream this is the perfect place. Short & simple menu. Everything looked clean as ever. Located in a cute little ally, & even has a sign on the street directions you down the ally. A nice twist on your typical ice cream flavors! AND they had recycled ice cream bowls :') 10/10 recommend
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
Fun flavors that are creamy and well made. My girlfriend and I got the lemon poppy and Thai tea cookies and cream. The lemon poppy was super lemony and the Thai tea had a very strong Thai tea flavor which we loved. We regret not going back for more while we were in the area this weekend!

Carla P.

Yelp
I love this Ice Cream so much! I am not an ice cream lover normally but I love their ice cream is so unique! Original flavors, clean space, great staff! Julian the owner is a really hospitable young fellow. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Brian R.

Yelp
This is the best ice cream I have ever had. Every flavor has been phenomenal. I can't recommend this place enough.

George W.

Yelp
Outstanding ice cream, big servings, big samples and very friendly staff. Worth a visit or pit stop off the Thruway!
google avatar

Elaine M.

Yelp
The best ice cream I've had in a long time. Their specialty flavors are spot on! Even classics like the Belgian chocolate and Buttermilk Strawberry will have you saying "wow." They also have some interesting and creative seasonal flavors. This place is literally in an alleyway but with outdoor seating for you to enjoy your ice cream. I'm not really a fan of Ube but the flavors of the Ube and Heath bar went well together. The Belgian chocolate was decadent and fudgy. A must for all chocolate lovers! The thai tea cookies and cream is the best Thai tea flavored ice cream I've had. And I've tried many since I'm from NYC. The cookies in the thai tea were paired perfectly. What a combination! The ice creams were so good that we bought 10 pints home. Kudos to Alleyway for packing our pints for a 2 hour drive home. Definitely will be back to try more flavors!!

Jay L.

Yelp
Best upstate ice cream and it's not even close! Also, the staff is great, we were highly impressed.

Brandon B.

Yelp
I am a Saugerties native and there are very few places in the area I recommend more than Alleyway. Every flavor I have tried has been delicious. Always creamy, flavorful, and consistent. If I'm being 100% honest, I understand the other comments about it being a little pricey. But you get what you pay for here, as the quality is unmatched and the staff is ALWAYS friendly and kind. If I had to make a complaint, it would be that I wish they had bigger take home sizes than a pint. Because the Ube Heath Bar flavor is easily the best flavor of ice cream I've ever had, and I'd love to be able to buy it by the bucket. Keep up the great work :)
google avatar

Yelp
Celebrating father's day the way I celebrate everyday, with good ice cream of course! My favorite spot in the Catskills, originally recommended by my uncle. It's a perfectly made creamy and delicious ice cream with creative flavors. It's a short menu, but a good one. I had Cinnamon Toast Crunch which was yummy but could have been a bit more cinnamony and definitely needed some crunchy bits of cereal, but still well made and tasty. The second flavor though is my fav here, Thai Tea Cookies & Cream, this ice cream is amazing. The sweet and tangy flavor of Thai iced tea with big cakey chunks of cookies and cream, those cookies are just perfect. Their Ube Heath Bar Crunch is also delicious. Highly recommend this spot and the single serving is plenty big and you can get two flavors in it! and a half out of five cones. Best paired with a stroll through the shops of Saugerties and R.E.M. - Orange Crush.
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
We were joking around town but had heard of this place before coming and then from a friendly local. OMG. I had the Thai tea cookies and cream. I love Thai iced tea and so rarely have it. This icecream was a perfect match plus the fun of the Oreos. I don't like strawberries or cheesecake but the flavor my husband got was well done too. I'd definitely visit again!

Lydia M.

Yelp
I was visiting from out of town for a friend's wedding and was really craving some ice cream (23 weeks pregnant here). Looked up local ice cream shops and found this gem. Tucked away in the cutest little alleyway with string lights. The ice cream is fantastic! Creamy, not overly indulgent. We tried the buttermilk strawberry, key lime pie, sour cream blueberry and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. All of them were top notch.
google avatar

Meghan H.

Yelp
I'm a local. There are four ice cream shops in the village. Alleyway never fails to disappoint and will forever be my #1 go to ice cream shop. I wish they were open all week! The ice cream is amazing. And the staff are always a pleasure to interact with.
google avatar

Sensi V.

Yelp
They never have dairy free ice cream available whenever I have stopped by. Lame. Stop selling dairy ice cream. The cows and planet will appreciate it.
