Charleston’s Newest Italian Restaurant, Allora, opens soon | Eater Carolinas

"Opening Wednesday, October 1, Charleston’s newest Italian spot from Free Reign Restaurants reimagines 114 Spring Street as a multi-level hangout with a rooftop, a dining room, a separate bar, and a streetside window for gelato, espresso, spritzes, and boozy popsicles. Inspired by the southern Italian coast, the menu leans into pasta with 12 choices—from clam linguine and cavatelli con polpo (octopus) to mafaldine with pork ragu—plus build-your-own cheese-and-meat boards, a variety of tinned fish, and traditional crudi and antipasti. The interiors are whimsical and Old World, with Positano greens and pinks, fabricated stucco walls, light wood, feminine fabrics, and a lemon tree in the dining room; on the roof, Campari-branded umbrellas provide shade and a projection screen will show old black-and-white Italian films. A $600 “Girls Weekend” package nods to the Cannonborough/Elliotborough bachelorette scene with a magnum of rosé, dinner for six to eight, and commemorative T-shirts. Once open, it will serve lunch and dinner daily, offering one of the few chances for daytime Italian in town." - Erin Perkins

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Allora Italian Restaurant absolutely knocked it out of the park! From start to finish, our dining experience was flawless. I had the gluten-free linguine with Amalfi lemons — truly one of the best pasta dishes I’ve ever had. They offer two different gluten-free pastas each day, which is such a thoughtful touch for those of us who are gluten-free. My friend, who isn’t gluten-free, raved about her pasta too! The service was exceptional — our waiter, Drew, was so kind, attentive, and made us feel completely taken care of. We also tried The Spritz — a refreshing mix of strawberry vodka, Prosecco, basil, and lemon — and it was fantastic! For dessert, we shared the double chocolate gelato (amazing!) and finished with an espresso martini topped with pistachio cream — pure perfection. The ambiance is absolutely stunning — soft pinks, deep greens, and a lush biophilic design that feels chic yet cozy. As someone who’s half Italian and knows authentic Italian food, I can confidently say Allora is one of my top five restaurants in all of Charleston. A must-visit for anyone who loves incredible food, cocktails, and genuine hospitality. 🇮🇹✨ 🍝🍓🍸 Follow me on Instagram @holycityfitblonde for more great reviews on restaurants, hotels, boutiques, and much more!

I had such a great experience at this restaurant! We had a casual Sunday night dinner with friends, and from the moment we walked in, we absolutely loved the decor and ambiance. The table and seats were super comfortable and had enough space to feel private. The staff were all so friendly! Our server was incredibly knowledgable about the menu and he had some great recommendations for us. We started with the Wagyu Beef Carpacio and it was amazing! So rich and delicious. Of course, my heart was won over by the complimentary focaccia bread served in cute little paper bags - we got two it was so good! For my main course, I ordered the Ricotta Gnocchi with ripe tomato, basil and olive oil. It was classic and wonderful! My husband ordered the daily special - Sunday Sauce with Polenta and three meats - sausage and braised beef. So savory! We shared back and forth for the perfect combination. For dessert, we split the Tiramisu and a cappuccino. Can't wait to come back again soon!

Google
A lot left to be desired. Food was either bland or overly salty. Presentation of the food was great but just lacking taste. Clam linguine only had 5 clams and none mixed within with what tasted like only butter sauce-nothing special. Malfadine pasta had huge pockets of salt that made it hard to eat. Broccoli rabe was oddly flavored. Calamari was fine. Espresso martini and piccolo ribelle were terrible and took 35 minutes to receive. House focaccia was served cold not even room temp or warmed and very dense-but olive oil was good quality. Gelato was very good, cannoli needs some work. Our server on the other hand was amazing and very attentive and conversational as well as the other staff. I would maybe try again in a couple months once the kinks have been worked out. Great space and atmosphere minus the plastic vines.

My husband and I just came home from a month in Italy and have just moved to Charleston today. We heard of the opening of allora and came to check it out! We started with fantastic drinks (limoncello spritz) followed by a wagyu carpaccio. Our server was delightful, informed, and professional. We continued our dinner with the fried zucchini pasta (which is a true Salian staple for my family in Italy). It was creamy, flavorful, and true Italian flare). My husband had the carbonara which was phenomenal. We ended the evening with a light palette cleanser with some gelato! It was a delightful night. Filled with lots of love! If you haven’t been. Allora has been open for 3 weeks and I can see a bright future for this place! Olive was our server this evening, she was adorable, professional, and very knowledgeable about the menu.

Google
INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! Bella, our server, did an exquisite job tonight in everything service! Stellar food and drink recommendations while creating a super cheery and lively atmosphere! The affogato made with salted caramel gelato was to die for and the octopus appetizer is a must!! The perfect spot :)

Google
Had dinner here the other night and all the food and drinks were great. Had the table side martinis for 2 and a limoncello martini (not pictured), both good and the table side service was fun. Octopus was delicious, and then the lemon pasta and snapper were great. They also said they can do all their pastas with gf pasta. Our server was amazing! The hostess was a little rude, but it was clear they were very busy and turning many walk ins away. The server more than made up for it though!!

Google
GREAT restaurant. The food was spectacular, truly authentic and great flavor - the highlights being the carpaccio (the best I’ve had in CHS) and the freshly made past (perfectly al dente). Ah, and the tiramisu was to die for. This just made the top of the list as Italian restaurants go. Service was super friendly and efficient and the rooftop was very nice.

Google
I wish I had gotten more photos of the interior as well as our food because it was all amazing! Been here twice now, and both times the service was excellent, the food was amazing, the environment was very inviting (coolest bathroom ever lol), and their beverage selection had something for everyone (omg try the limoncello, sooooo good 😍) We ordered the calamari and I had the cavatelli with octopus and bone marrow, both were fantastic! Clinton served us, he very kind and knowledgeable about the menu. Recommend this place 100% ☺️☀️🤙🏼

Yelp
Very good food, service, and ambiance. Much too loud. Have to yell at each other to be heard above the crowd.

Yelp
I'd been excited to try Allora, and honestly the recent reviews had started to scare me off BUT it ended up being amazing! First off, the space is adorable and the staff was super friendly and accommodating. What we ordered: Mussels: buttery, garlicky goodness served with warm, fresh bread. Carbonara: rich, creamy, and the guanciale was perfectly crispy. Veal Scaloppine (Friday special): so glad we got this. I wasn't in the mood for fish or pork, and this hit the spot--tender, flavorful, and delicious. Tiramisu & Cannoli: fresh, creamy, and the perfect level of sweetness. Such a great way to end the night. I'd genuinely recommend everything we ordered. Plus, they bring out homemade focaccia, which just made the whole experience that much better. I honestly think the mixed reviews are just new-restaurant growing pains. We had a great experience and will definitely be back!

Yelp
Everything went well! I finally stopped in at Allora for lunch and what a delight it was! After completing Allora's gelato walk up window review I was anxious to try the restaurant for lunch. Think coastal charm meets southern Italy. You will feel like you are in Naples, Palermo, Bari perhaps? I lingered after my lunch enjoying the freshly made espresso and delectable cannoli. Not too sweet which was nice and it is housed in a chocolate shell. Yum. The service, and I might mention here that Tyler was buzzing about and handling the room exquisitely! Very attentive, efficient and service with a smile and he will not disappoint. The ambience is that of an authentic neighborhood cafe and both the exterior and interior seafoam colors make it feel more upscale and sophisticated. The day I dined for lunch at Allora not one man was found in the dining room. I joked that the establishment should offer "girls lunching out" as a promo! So girls ~ "dress up" and make some plans soon to meet up with friends as Allora will definitely make an impression all the way around. With the focus on authentic Italian fare ~ so do not expect spaghetti and meatballs, etc., (even though I asked if they had any meatballs hidden in the kitchen) ... expect Antipasti dishes like Carpaccio Di Wagyu, Salmone Salvatico, Mediterranean Octopus, Osso Alla Midollo...Primi items~ Pasta a Piselli, Mafalda Al Ragu-- you get the message! Do hit the Walk Up Gelato window -- seems like it's always open ~ even stays open later ~ till 10:00 pm. For milder evenings Allora's rooftop dining is a hit and to be able to dine al fresco sometimes is always wonderful. I was told while taking the tour that the management is working on heating and partially enclosing the rooftop dining/ bar area but will still keep the eye level views ... I will return for sure~ a special is offered everyday ~ today the special was eggplant lasagna which was out of this world. A MUST try!

Yelp
The restaurant itself is physically attractive. The inside is nice and gives off a decent vibe. I went to visit my niece and she had said this restaurant was relatively new and had wanted to try it. I'm not sure who its food supplier is, but it's definitely an economy provider. Nothing tasted fresh. The pasta tasted gritty and the sauce tasted like it came out of a jar. It's like everything had been frozen and reheated, then served. My niece was pretty disappointed, but now she knows not to go back there .

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place. After hearing mixed reviews, I decided to try it anyway because the concept sounded great and the space looked absolutely beautiful. We're big fans of the food group behind it, so expectations were high. And visually, the restaurant truly delivers--it's one of the most stunning interiors I've been to recently, with a thoughtful layout and the bonus of a coffee and gelato window. The Cons: Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to the atmosphere. Right off the bat, my (very pretty) plate had old food visibly caked on it--immediately off-putting. Service also felt underwhelming: it seemed like mostly college students were running the floor, and our server wasn't able to answer basic questions about the menu, which was surprising for a restaurant at this price point. Both cocktails (the Limoncello and Perfecto spritzes) had to be sent back--they sounded great on paper but were not drinkable. That was a pretty big miss. The dessert situation was another letdown. While the restaurant heavily promotes its gelato, it turns out it's not made in-house. As soon as we tried it, we suspected it was wholesale (very similar to Talenti), and a staff member later confirmed this. The tiramisu was mostly mascarpone with barely any ladyfingers, and the affogato came out pre-poured, with the ice cream already melted. A simple fix, but disappointing for a first impression. The Pros: Despite the service and drink missteps, the food itself was solid. We ordered the arugula salad, shrimp appetizer, carbonara, and ragu. Everything except the ragu was flavorful and well-seasoned. The focaccia bread service throughout the meal was a lovely touch and helped elevate the experience. Overall: There's a lot of potential here--the concept is fantastic and the space is genuinely beautiful. But right now, it feels like style is outpacing substance. The food is good, which gives me hope, but the service, cocktails, and dessert execution need work. With time, I think these issues can be ironed out. For now, though, I'd recommend waiting a few months before visiting, especially given the price point.

Yelp
We stopped in for a double date Sunday night. I knew Allora had just opened and I usually don't go to restaurants while I assume they are working out the kinks. That being said, this isn't their first rodeo in Charleston (the owners), so I figured it would be fine. I like their other restaurants, so I had high high hopes! First, the place is stunning - I mean, it's absolutely gorgeous. There are quite a few tables packed in here, but it wasn't too loud during our meal. Everything was well styled and well lit. Our waitress was phenomenal. I think her name might have been Bella (?) but anyway... she was extremely knowledgeable about the wine list as well as the food menu. She gets a 5/5 for sure. Our table ordered the wagyu beef crudo, buffalo mozzarella, wild arugula, mafaldine, ricotta gnocchi, lumache, and the steak florentine - as well as a few cocktails and wine. As a table, we pretty much all had the same thoughts. The starters definitely outshined the mains - the arugula was dressed very well. The jams with the mozzarella were both stellar as well. I'd definitely try another crudo (we had two people who don't love fish) if I went back in the future, but the beef was delicious. While the pastas were cooked well, they all came to the table at the lower end of room temp (same with the focaccia service, which is a little more ok). I would have liked them to be served warm, but still they were just fine - nothing extraordinary. In Charleston, there are SO many people doing Italian that it's hard not to compare but there are a couple of spots that make a dang good bowl of pasta with an upscale vibe. Same with the steak - it was cooked perfectly and was very well seasoned but for the price, again, there are so many phenomenal steaks in CHS. That being said, our drinks were great and all in all I went with 4 stars (so I'd go again, but I'm not DYING to go back asap). I do think this is a perfect little romantic spot for a few cocktails and maybe charcuterie or dessert!

Yelp
A great new addition to Charleston! The waitress shared that the menu was family style. An appetizer and main course were the perfect amount for a party of two. I absolutely loved the eggplant pasta dish, highly recommend. The interior of the main dining room was very Instagram worthy. Such a cute spot for a girls lunch/dinner. The walk up gelato/coffee window was a perfect end to the visit!

Yelp
We randomly discovered this restaurant on a Wednesday when we were looking for a place that we could get a late lunch at 1:45 pm. This place is beautiful with the use of green and pink decor and great photos for artwork. All though we live in Charleston, we felt like we were on vacation for a short moment while on a work lunch break. Everyone greeted us and provided great service. I had the Mezzi Rigatoni with shrimp and my husband had Clam Linguine. Both were delicious and not too overpriced. The serving size of each provided leftovers for another small meal. I highly recommend checking out this beautiful spot, especially if you need a small getaway during your workday.

Yelp
This place has gotten some mixed reviews and I understand why. I really wanted to love it for a lot of reasons and there is a lot to love: the Thursday special- oasis bucco- is AMAZING. They also have a great wine selection and the ambiance is just fun. I would stay away from the bar area where it just feels a bit too crowded with furniture and ceiling. The dining room is lovely. I was really looking forward to pasta but it was meh. The worst part is that pieces were stuck together- I think this speaks to quality control. I hope they figure out the kinks!

Yelp
We were really excited to try this new spot for a rare date night out - we have two little ones, so these evenings are special. Both my husband and I have over 15 years each in the hospitality industry, so we know that mistakes can happen, but we also know what good service and guest recovery look like. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst dining experiences we've had in Charleston. We were seated inside, which is gorgeous, but it took over 10 minutes before anyone greeted us (not a biggie). Once we finally ordered, the drinks were good and the calamari appetizer was honestly the best we've ever had. The tuna appetizer was a bit too salty, but we were still optimistic at that point. Our server recommended the lobster spaghetti ($58), so we decided to splurge. When it arrived, half portion of lobster was on the small side (not much meat) and the pasta was noticeably overcooked. Then we realized the lobster meat was translucent and undercooked. I showed our server immediately, and she went to speak with the manager. She returned saying the Manager will be by. Ten minutes went by, no Manager, the server returns saying the kitchen confirmed it was cooked--without anyone even looking at the plate that was still sitting in front of us. The manager never came over, even after we waited more than 20 minutes, watching him seat other guests and stand at the host stand. By the time we had to leave, the issue was still unresolved. The undercooked dish remained on the table, yet it was still on our bill. There was no apology, no offer to replace it, comp a drink, or even a simple gesture to acknowledge what happened. As past hospitality professionals ourselves, we were stunned by the lack of care or accountability - especially for a new restaurant trying to build a reputation. We spent $280 for two people on a night we'd been looking forward to, and left disappointed and frustrated. The setting is lovely, and a few things (like the calamari) were fantastic, but the way management handled - or rather ignored - the situation was unacceptable. A simple conversation or effort to make it right would have gone a long way. Sadly, we won't be returning, and I hope they take this feedback seriously because the potential is there - but the leadership clearly needs work.

Yelp
This place is amazing!!! The decor and ambiance is worth everything, and the food is good. We got the fried calamari which was amazing, not chewy...melt in your mouth type. I will go back just for that.

Yelp
The coffee and desserts here are amazing! I haven't had anything else yet! Tiramisu, donuts, and gelato were superb!

Yelp
The ambiance, decor and waitstaff are fabulous! I had the limoncello spritzer cocktail which was wonderful. As was the focaccia bread they bring you. We had the mushroom appetizer and it was so delicious; however, my linguine entree was lacking flavor. There was barely a hint of lemon and honestly, I had expected a lot more flavor from this restaurant. I WILL go back and try something else but I was sadly underwhelmed by my dish. Also, the lack of parking is ridiculous.

Eliza L.

Yelp
We stopped into Allora without a reservation and were immediately impressed by how welcoming the hosts were -- they couldn't have been nicer and quickly found us a spot on the rooftop patio, which turned out to be such a charming place to enjoy dinner. Our meal was fantastic the salad was wonderful, and the pastas were absolutely delicious. Our server, Tyler, was wonderful -- genuinely kind, attentive, and thoughtful. He offered great recommendations, checked in to make sure we were comfortable (even offered blankets when the evening got a bit chilly), and had such a warm way of connecting with all of his tables. Overall, we had a wonderful dinner with an exceptional staff. Allora has the perfect mix of great food, great people, and a great atmosphere!!! So happy we stopped in!

Doug T.

Yelp
We dropped in for an early dinner. Nice decor that reminds me of a family kitchen/ dining space. Our waitress was good at explaining the menu. I tried to order using Italian and ordered the wrong dish. They quickly remedied and it was delicious.

Tricia P.

Yelp
Why can't Charleston ever do Italian food right? Lots of misses here. Decor for one is extra cheesy, like it was designed by someone who visited Italy on a celebrity cruise meets Greek diner - complete with fake columns! I also don't know why they list "Amalfi Lemon" as an ingredient in at least two items unless they are actually flown in from Italy. Are the lemons actually from Amalfi? Especially when the fish on the menu is not sourced and the steak Florentine doesn't have any information about source, cut or grade. It's supposed to be a porterhouse in case you're wondering. No self respecting Italian would ever be caught dead serving pasta in a margarita glass either! I could go on but why bother....

Chris W.

Yelp
We had an awful experience upstairs -- completely different from the great time we had downstairs. The bartender upstairs was unbelievably rude and carried himself like he was somehow above serving customers. We ordered three courses: the first came out in about 10 minutes, and then... nothing. We waited nearly an hour before asking about the rest of our food. He looked totally lost, as if he didn't even know what our order was. Another 30 minutes went by, and we'd had enough. When we asked for the check, he actually had the nerve to tell us "your food will be out soon" -- and then handed us the full bill! No apology, no accountability, just attitude. It's a shame because the downstairs experience was great, but upstairs was an absolute disaster. Between the entitlement, the disorganization, and the complete lack of professionalism.
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
What a great experience. Can't wait to go back. The space is amazing and you can tell a lot of time was put into it. Everything we ordered was excellent and our servers were very attentive to us the whole night

Yelp
Amazing food. The espresso martini was delicious. Get the fried zucchini pasta! You won't regret it!

Robert C.

Yelp
Beautiful and charming, the staff was lovely, attentive and spot on, we shared a salad, dressing was subtle not over powering, again just right. Main course Lobster, and secret pork, must say double wow, pasta great and my potato's could be a meal unto themselves. Ended with gelato and donut, roll us out , full and planning our return!!!!

Autumn G.

Yelp
We sat at the rooftop bar for an afternoon drink after getting into town. The hostess said Jack would be happy to see us, he was NOT. Jack was incredibly rude. We ordered 1 drink each, at the end he said with a STRAIGHT face "they're all the same price just give me 5 cards that's easier". Ok, not what you usually do but he said to so we started giving him our cards. Then, again, straight face "I was being sarcastic". We do not know this man! How are we supposed to know you are being sarcastic? He didn't check on us once while we sat there. To top it off, he said he could make a Hugo Spritz and clearly could not. It was terrible.

Shannon C.

Yelp
Unfortunately for such a cute place with nice people they operationally are a mess. Need to work out a lot of kinks service wise. Attention to detail, training and customer experience need a lot of work. Food was good but not worth the experience and price.

Sarah C.

Yelp
We had a lovely lunch here. Both the food and service were outstanding. Don't miss the calamari. With the occasional banana pepper mixed in, it was perfect. We also loved the tuna crudo. It had just the right amount of spice. We will definitely be back soon!

Kristen C.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this restaurant the menu looked amazing, but unfortunately, our experience was terrible. Within a couple hours of dining here, everyone in our group became extremely sick and throwing up. It's clear that something we ate was not handled properly.

Paige H.

Yelp
We were seated in a terrible spot that shouldn't even be on their seat plan: a bar counter overlooking the working gelato station and adjacent to the busy expo and kitchen. Multiple staff were standing inches away from us waiting for dishes the entire time. It was incredibly uncomfortable for us and felt like we were in the way of the staff and in a part of the restaurant that guests shouldn't even see. We were just watching staff scooping gelato; the cups for which were on our "table" that we were eating on. The leftmost seat was against the wall and wedged behind a pillar so it was very difficult to get out. It was truly one of the worst dinings experiences we've ever had and we couldn't way to leave. On top of it all, the plate they gave me was dirty. The food was pretty good, not anything to write home about (carbonara sauce was very watery like a soup, calamari was 1/4 banana peppers) and the bourbon basilica cocktail tasted watered down but my perfecto spritz was yummy. The rest of the restaurant was adorable and I was so excited to come here so I was really disappointed to not get to enjoy the good ambience that it seemed like everywhere else in the restaurant had. I hope they just remove this bar counter from the seat plan and let their gelato staff use it as a working bar for servers to pick up their desserts

Eunice G.

Yelp
Ambiance is a 10, food was just ok. Pasta was undercooked( overly firm in the middle), flavor was good though. Didn't love the veal scaloppine. Wine sauce flavor was overpowering. Tiramisu was good, but needed more ladyfingers dipped in espresso. The few last fingers in there were dry and crunchy. Service was average- nothing special. Loved the rooftop seating.

Elaine K.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place, so I made a reservation weeks in advance for the first night they opened. I received a call 45 minutes before our reservation and was told that they would not be opening that night due to the fire marshall not showing for their inspection. They said they would be cancelling all of their reservations that night, but that they could offer us a reservation at their sister restaurant, southbound, for 20% off. They never once offered to reschedule my reservation. At the end of the call, I told them I'd reach out to my party and asked if they could give me a call back to get another date on the books. I never received a callback from them, but saw that they were open with a full house the following night. Bummer!

Kaleb N.

Yelp
Honestly, a really cool rooftop bar! The bartender, Jack, was really cool! He made a specialty manhattan that was amazing!

Makenna J.

Yelp
Jack, the bartender on the rooftop, was great. We got great service, great food, and great drinks.

Meg A.

Yelp
Fabulous, well-balanced flavors, a varied menu and truly great service (you're not going to be rushed here!). We really loved the six dishes we ordered - and when the server found out it was my friends birthday, he brought out a dessert, lit up in the most festive way. We felt like family here. A lovely outdoor space, beautiful interior - it was such a great experience!
