The 12 Best New Restaurants in New Orleans, March 2025

"Alma Cafe has been a consistent hit for brunch since opening in New Orleans’s Bywater neighborhood in 2022. Now, chef Melissa Araujo, a two-time James Beard: Best Chef South semifinalist, hopes to recreate that magic in Mid-City. Araujo opened a second location of Alma at 301 North Carrollton Avenue in early February, adding an oyster bar, happy hour, and dinner to its repertoire. All-day brunch focusing on Honduran specialties is served daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., while dinner is served Monday through Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. — with dishes like aguachile negro, Honduran tamales, whole fried fish, and confit duck. Happy hour includes $1 raw and $1.50 chargrilled oysters." - Clair Lorell

I love Alma cafe!! Everything I've tried is delicious. Had been to their original location in the quarter and was so happy to see them expand. This is one of my favorite brunch spots in the city. Tasty food, great service. Would highly recommend!

I had high hopes for Alma, but unfortunately, it missed the mark—especially for the price point. We went during happy hour, expecting at least a decent deal, but were shocked by how expensive everything was. I ordered the Providence roll, which came with three shrimp and was 99% bread when you actually cut it open for $18. Yes, you read that right—three shrimp, in Louisiana, during happy hour. The food lacked seasoning across the board. I had to hunt down salt for my fries, and the $20 single octopus tentacle was spicy but still somehow bland—no depth of flavor, just heat. Honestly, the best part of the whole experience was the draft beer. This place might be trying for upscale, but overpriced, under-seasoned food doesn’t cut it—especially when you’re living in a state known for bold, flavorful cooking. Won’t be going back.

Every chance that I get I try and support local businesses. I had heard great things about Alma. The restaurant was very supportive of a local non-profit that I am involved with, Les Dames d'Escoffier so I wanted to support them as well. What a culinary experience this was! We started out doing happy hour, then ended up staying for dinner. Hudson, our server was charming, attentive, and encouraged us to try something that wasn't on the menu yet which was a great call. The grilled bok choy ended up being one of our favorite dishes. Beautiful restaurant, outstanding food, talented chef, and delightful staff. I can't wait to go back and to graze through the entire menu. Thank you!

Visited for lunch on a weekday. Service was attentive and friendly. Was a touch loud, but you could still hold a conversation. We got the Anafre Hondureno, Huevos Creillos, and Dauphine Omelet. All solid options, nothing life changing. I will say the price was a bit high for what we got in terms of flavor and portion size.

Great spot with excellent service and delicious food! The oysters—both grilled and raw—were huge (the size of my palm!) and very tasty, especially during happy hour. Cocktails were great too. Monica, our server, was super friendly and helped us choose the best options. Highly recommend

☝️Be prepared for the rips here and there! I know, in NOLA we are used to paying Entergy birds and squirrels fees, but Entergy has no competitors, unlike Alma. So, in order. The food is delicious and I would go for breakfast in this place every day. Coffee is very good. The design is very light and clean and sitting by the window is just a pleasure... But the greed of the owners killed me as a client already at the time of the second visit. When I ordered salmon lox something something for $ 23, I expected at least a full-fledged dish, and not a basic sandwich with goat cheese and three pieces of lox from above. Yes, it was exactly basic piece of bread, cheese and lox for $23. No veggies, greens, nothing. In Walmart, for $23, you can buy literally half of a whole salmon. So, you know. If you decide to turn an ordinary dish into a vegetarian, as you are offered on the menu, then be prepared to pay for each change as add ons. Like original price of the dish + changes. One day my dish magically grew from $20 something to almost $30. Drinks refills? No way! You already breathing their air for free! And in the end... your check will come with: a performance fee (probably it is kind of a thanks to them that they came to work), a credit card processing fee (no matter if you go with cash, I tried one day to pay with cash 😂), a tips to a waiter (20% mandatory, why they should pay their workers when you can) and who knows maybe they come up with something else this morning 🤔 If I go to eat outside, I'm looking for a place where I will feel at my grandma's home where they love me, but not look at me as a piggy bank.

Google
Delicious, friendly staff, the menu is filled with so many options that it’s hard to make a decision but rest assured, whatever you pick it’s going to be awesome. Can’t wait to work my way through all of the offerings. Coffee was solid as were the cocktails and local beer selection. I first dined at the original Bywater location and happy for the additional location in MidCity. Really a great fit to the neighborhood, it adds something original but familiar to the area.

Google
Amazing food. Super great staff. Had my bday dinner there the other night. Food is freaking good. There are a lot of good restaurants in town, but the food here just tastes and feels better. Not sure how to describe it, just healthier. And really good.

Yelp
Service was really on point. We had a very attentive and friendly server. Seven of us dined for a late brunch for a friend's birthday. Really loved the pancakes and pupusas. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. Although both huavos rancheros could have been warmer. Left full and happy. Love having this midcity option!

Yelp
First time here and looking forward to the Chargrilled Oysters on the Happy Hour menu. I wasn't impressed at all. They lacked flavor. I was also disappointed that they didn't offer beers like Michelob, Ultra or Budweiser. I'm not a fan of the new brews. Probably the worst Happy Hour I've gone to with my wife and friends. Prices were high and not much of a selection. The restaurant is beautiful on the inside and the staff all friendly and accommodating. Jose was wonderful! He gets 5 stars!!!

Yelp
Friends and I decided to check the new location for Alma since they had oyster specials for Happy Hour! The location is easily accessible in Mid City in the corner of S Carrollton and Bienville. It's newly opened and totally renovated inside. I'm not a fan of the chairs they had. Not great for those who are plus size. The chargrilled oysters were okay but not all that. We also had a side of truffle fries, Anafre Hondureno, a Burger and the special Fried Fish of the day. The truffle fries lacked salt and flavor. The refined beans were great; however we were asked if we wanted more chips and didn't realize we would be charged $5 for a small bowl of them. We did really enjoy the burger and the fish although I felt they were overpriced. Their Happy Hour menu was very small. Our server Jose' made our night as did the Rum punch! All in all, I don't think I'd go back.

Yelp
So I happened to see the place on instagram decided to go and it did not disappoint. The place is small and intimate. Service was good. We had the Bistec Encebollado, the steak was flavorful although it could've been more tender for my liking, but everything else was great on the plate. We also had the plantain taco not sure that's what it's called but they were delicious . Also tried the beef Pupusas they had a great savory flavor. And ended the meal with a caramel macchiato it was good.

Yelp
I'll give them a semi pass since this was maybe their first weekend open. This isn't their first restaurant though so you'd think they'd be smoother than most. The new inside is nice. Definitely more aesthetically pleasing than a Mr. Ed's. I ordered a coffee drink to start since they don't have their liquor license yet. It didn't come out until after the food even though it was put in well before we decided on what we wanted to eat. I ordered the chilaquiles. For 18 bucks I thought they would be amazing. It was okay. Hopefully just first weekend jitters. Nice and spacious inside and great location I hope it gets its groove.

Yelp
I understand that the restaurant opened this week and want to give them some grace, but it honestly wasn't a good experience at all. We walked in and were seated immediately and our coffee order was taken after we confirmed they were still waiting for their liquor license. A few minutes later our food order was taken. Our huevos rancheros and chilaquiles arrived about 10 minutes later and our coffees arrived when we were halfway done with our entrees along with the check. It seemed a little odd to bring the check with our coffees when we were only halfway done eating. The food itself was underwhelming, the corn tortilla was so hard it was impossible to cut through and hard to chew and the beans were pretty flavorless unless you hit a tiny spot of salsa. The restaurant renovation is beautiful as well as the food presentation, but the service and food were lacking for a $50 breakfast.

Yelp
This is the second location of beloved Alma in New Orleans. Spacious, higher ceiling, and much easier parking. It's in the old location for Mr. Ed's. They brought all the hits over from the intimate location in the Bywater. The food is kick ass as always, and folks that found the drive to the original to be too much will be heartened by how easily accessible this location is. Come and get that good Honduran inspired food!

Yelp
I think the service needs some work. And I am a little disappointed that they removed all of the chicken sandwiches except one. But food is good as always. And I am glad is closer to home so I can go. I do like the original location better, but this is probably better for business. The ambiance is nice is pretty big and open space. Full bar and I cannot wait u til I come by for dinner to try it out. I had the baleadas with brisket that is a must always. Share it if you need to. Wife got the chicken sandwich and I also got the French toast. All super delicious.

Yelp
The service, vibes, and steak was 10 out of 10! Very clean and open space. Will be back.

Yelp
The happy hour drink prices were good. The Rum punch was great. Some of the prices were crazy. A piece of fish with head and bones was $58 served with rice and beans. The appetizer has a fancy name but was just bean dip. The waiter who was awesome, friendly and friendly entertaining asked if we needed more than the 10 chips it came with. We said yes, $5. The restrooms were clean and accessible. The burger was delicious.

Yelp
So I can see why this location is so lowly rated. Friends and I went there around 7 pm on a Tues night. Since our favorite places are closed on Tues, one of them suggested this new Alma's. I've loved the Bywater location so agreed, even though I warned them the reviews were bad. They said some people just like to complain, so they said they wanted to try it out. Firstly, they did a good job renovating the old Mr Ed's. Service was also good. Our server was pleasant and immediately greeted us, telling us about all their specials in details. None of them sounded appealing so I just ordered their burger. The rest of the table ordered the oysters and duck plate. Food came out and we dug in. My friends had small plates so i didnt sample theirs. However, they both tried, and we were all underwhelmed. Fries were not crispy. It was drenched in truffle oil and parmesan. Was missing the actual truffle slices like in the main location. Burger was super greasy with the onion spread, aioli, bacon and buttered buns. Patty itself had no taste of actual fire elements (grilled or pan fried). Was it cooked in the microwave? It tasted all one-note (soggy salty grease) that the fries just added much of the same. To make matters worse, immediate food poisoning when I got home. Nope! PS: they decided to convert their former men's and women's bathrooms to unisex ones so the one on the right has a urinal as soon as you walk in. If you don't want to be staring at the urinal while you're peeing, choose the one straight ahead.

Yelp
Amazing; but that's par for the course for Alma. The ambiance is jazzy in the re-deco'd former place with nice greenery and a crisp but homey vibe. The food is always exceptional and flavorful and soul-warming. On top of that, service knocks it out of the park. Thanks, Roscio! I'll be back for happy hour and another breakfast. And lunch. And then again for everything.

Yelp
It's their second weekend open in mid-city, parades were canceled today, and everyone had the same idea. We are all here! No worries though the staff is friendly, the owner is hosting today and the chatter says folx are enjoying the food and ambiance. The place is suitably packed with seats at the bar becoming premium. Wait staff are moving swiftly and adeptly through the room attending to patrons. The menu includes an extensive beverage list including mocktails, juices, and spirits. Food items vary from traditional American breakfast with a Honduran twist to flavorful classics like arroz con pollo. The bar has hooks underneath for things to hang which is such a plus, thinking about customers they get a star just for having them. There is patio seating but the rain keeps everyone inside. I'm the patio will be a favorite this spring and summer evenings. My husband says the coffee is perfect, it only needs a bit of sugar. Apparently that's how you know coffee is good when you don't have to add things to it. I'll take his word for it, I'm not a coffee drinker. I did however indulge in the Watermelon Agua Fresca and it was refreshing. It will definitely be a favorite this summer. I had the lox on toast and the grilled chicken salad both were very good. I made very happy plates. My husband had the veggies omelette and a bowl of red beans and rice. The omelette disappeared almost instantly and I barely managed a picture. By the time he made it to the bowl he was on a much steadier pace. This location can fill many expectations with good food and ample beverage options it can be breakfast, lunch, or dinner for the family, friends, casual dining, or solid relationships. It can sound rambunctious when filled with lively folks but a good experience is still on the menu for an affordable price.

Yelp
Delicious innovative dishes, excellent service. The coffees are delish too. We've been 2 x and enjoyed both

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately did not have a good experience. I stopped in for dinner on a Thursday evening. I thought this was a Honduran restaurant and was disappointed to find barely any Honduran food choices on the menu. Where were the tacos Hondureñas, bistec encebollado, or a baleada... at least? All I saw were oysters, beetroot, duck, amongst other non recognizable items. We were really looking for authentic Honduran food. I ended up ordering a burger that was described on the menu to be a double party smash burger, but instead, it was one thick patty that tasted like it had been previously frozen. It was over cooked on the outside, almost raw on the inside. The bread was soggy and it was drowning in onions. Again, I really wanted to like this place and hope they can actually bring real authentic Honduran food to mid city as advertised.

Judith D.

Yelp
The food was quite delicious. The steak melted in my mouth. The rice and black beans were seasoned to perfection. Cute outdoor seating area was the perfect backdrop for this sunny day.
google avatar

Mayra G.

Yelp
My favorite thing was the hibiscus juice. Other than that it's not life changing Honduran food at all it's more gentrified than anything. My order was made incorrect and food is over priced.

David K.

Yelp
Don't have their act together at all from a service and food preparation standpoint. Uncooked seafood and clueless wait staff

Audrey P.

Yelp
The food is actually really bad here. You think it's authentic latin food and it's just not. All the food was super greasy and bland. The drinks were good at least. The server was really sweet and attentive but the kitchen took forever to get our food out although there were only a couple of people there. Never coming back

Bella P.

Yelp
Overpriced, the waiters are NOT knowledgeable on what the "secret fees" on the receipt are. Including adding a 3% processing fee BEFORE I paid. As a matter of fact, he "giggled" when I asked about it and I told him I hadn't given my form of payment yet. Mind you-- I paid in CASH. Check your bill before you leave. They are robbing people BLIND. Not cool. Don't plan on going back and will NOT recommend to others.

Yelp
New location, light, clean and open. It was a slow night and the service was quick. The dinner menu isn't online but we were expecting something similar to the variety on their lunch menu. We were very wrong. Extremely limited dinner menu and pricey for the quantity. $20 for 6 oysters and $28 for a burger is a little much - even for New Orleans. The biggest surprise was the extra charges on the bill - on top of the 10% New Orleans taxes they tacked on their exhibition tax and another fee of 3% titled PF Services which I'm assuming is a credit card processing fee. Keep in mind this fee was added before I gave them payment so apparently everyone is paying a credit card fee - even if paying cash. A nice little bonus for the restaurant charging an extra 3% to every customer - especially when the average credit card processing fee is 1.4 to 2.5 (slightly higher for American Express). It's one thing to overcharge for your food but don't sneak in extra fees. If you can't afford your business do something else.

Monique O.

Yelp
I love Alma's FULL STOP! But the location on Carrollton needs some work. First and foremost the internet service is crappy and you can't connect to their WiFi because it's for business purposes only. I ordered the Alma's breakfast and added chicken. Because the chicken took longer to cook everything else on the plate was just sitting. As a result the chicken was piping hot but the rest of the items were cold. I hate when people send food back so I just ate it. Also I ordered a cortado and although I know it is essentially a shot of espresso I felt the cup size at the Carrollton location was smaller than the original location. I am going to chalk this experience up because they just opened but they need to make some serious changes. PS- the staff were amazing!

James J.

Yelp
I walked in and the room was chaotic obviously they were overwhelmed. I'm in the business so I empathize but the table set up is cramped and left little room to go to the bar. Found my way to the bar only to find seats so small an airplane seat seemed like a luxury. After sitting for a few minutes I deemed it to uncomfortable to continue. It's a shame and I'm sure you'll figure it out but this was a bad impression without eating.

Ashly P.

Yelp
The only reason this spot is getting a one star is because I have to leave star to leave a review! I'm Honduran myself and grew up eating the real deal and that was far from Honduran food ! It's was giving overpriced gentrification Honduran food. Very disappointed! Then they didn't bring my friend food till after I had already finished eating.

Rhonda H.

Yelp
The location is great, and the interior is beautiful. We arrived and were seated within minutes. It took a little bit for someone to come to the table, then we had another server come right afterwards, lol. We put a coffee order in while we looked at the menu. So the cappuccino and café au lait took a while and were warm, not hot at all. I think it sat for a bit waiting for pickup. We ordered and waited for a decent amount of time. But we were excited watching all the food coming out. Well, we were noticing a few things. The pancakes were really dark, so we did not order. So our food came out. I got the fried chicken thigh with the crawfish sauce on a biscuit topped with an egg. Our other dish was the hash. Well, unfortunately, both dishes were topped with extremely undercooked eggs. The top of the egg had not cooked; it was still clear and runny. Oh, and it had a shell right on top! We just ate around it until I got to a part that was just too much. The best part was the biscuit and the crawfish sauce. Everything was underseasoned; the eggs didn't have a bit of seasoning, neither did the chicken. The crawfish sauce saved the dish. We noticed several tables using the salt and pepper, and the table next to us asked for hot sauce, lol! I mentioned the undercooked eggs and shell to our server after I didn't want to get my food to go, so I politely pointed out the clear egg in my bowl. It was obvious she saw it and brought the bowl to whoever. She came back, gave us our bill, and said the kitchen is going to be more aware. Something like that. We paid our bill, left her a great tip, but it would have been nice to have had some kind of showing from the management considering both dishes had raw eggs. Maybe a bill reduction of our coffees or a little something to go? Nope. That was an 86$ lesson yea
