Mexico City’s Biggest Restaurant Group Has Landed at the Grove in LA | Eater LA

"Named for 'soul', Alma is Grupo Hunan's first U.S. outpost at the Grove, taking over the former 189 by Dominique Ansel space; the family-run group calls the location "a once in a lifetime opportunity and location." I'm told it will operate as a two-floor restaurant, likely with more casual offerings and patio seating on the first floor and a fuller menu for the upstairs and terrace, with the Shawmut build team and Cuaik Arquitectos still finalizing a light, breezy, green interior similar to the group's Hacienda in Cabo. The menu is described as a fresh take on traditional Mexican cuisine that pulls heavily from Grupo Hunan's existing dishes—everything from carnitas and ceviches to tacos, birria, and desserts—with tortillas made in-house and the group's existing chefs overseeing the kitchen at the outset. Expect lunch through dinner service and a full bar featuring plenty of imported tequila and mezcal, with an anticipated arrival sometime this summer." - Farley Elliott

This was one of the most authentic Mexican meals we’ve had in a long time. You can truly taste the heart and care that goes into every dish. The flavors were incredible and everything felt thoughtfully made. We loved everything we tried — the empanadas, tacos, and enchiladas were all amazing, and even the mezcal was perfectly smooth and flavorful. Such a great experience from start to finish. The service was amazing and we also loved all the stores as well. We’ll definitely be back!

Family operated, warm & friendly service. Quiet the evening we were here. Incredible, thoughtful, beautifully prepared, authentic Mexican cuisine. Mole was amazing! Empanadas - soft, delectible dough. Ours were beef. Fish taco was full of colour and texture. We'd love to attend a cooking class.

We’re from Houston, Texas, and even for us—people who grew up surrounded by tamales, salsa, and guacamole—this cooking class at Alma de México in San José del Cabo was something completely unique. From the moment we arrived, the hosts welcomed us like family. The rooftop setting was picture-perfect, with colorful tables, mountain views, and that laid-back Cabo breeze that makes everything feel magical. We made fresh salsa, creamy guacamole, and traditional tamales entirely from scratch, learning authentic techniques and tasting flavor combinations that were both comforting and totally new to us. Every detail was thoughtful, from the presentation of the dishes to the laughter shared around the table. The hosts’ passion for Mexican culture and cuisine came through in every moment. And their adorable dog, Pua, absolutely stole the show — such a sweet addition to the day! By the end, it felt less like a class and more like spending time with old friends who love great food. If you want to experience the real heart of Cabo — its people, flavors, and warmth — don’t miss this class. Five stars, hands down. We’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Very nice location, great food. They accommodated vegetarian options not on the menu for my husband. Fair prices and authentic food. Rum punch was made with really fruit and delicious. Mole and green sauce were amazing.

This was the best food we have had on our trip to Cabo. The guac was very fresh and flavorful. The chile relleno was the best one we have had anywhere and Marlin tacos were delicious too. It’s just a few blocks off the main tourist street but definitely worth the extra steps. We will be going back again

What a great experience, was suggested to come here off of the art walk and had a great experience. Cheaper than any other menu I saw around but absolutely would be a great value at twice the price. The atmosphere and setting are so unique and wholesome and the food was so delicious and beautiful. I normally dont take pictures of my food but i couldnt help but take a picture of this.

Amazing Mezcal margharitas. Staff are very friendly and while we did not eat, the food looked absolutely amazing. This is an authentic family run business.
