"Named for 'soul', Alma is Grupo Hunan's first U.S. outpost at the Grove, taking over the former 189 by Dominique Ansel space; the family-run group calls the location "a once in a lifetime opportunity and location." I'm told it will operate as a two-floor restaurant, likely with more casual offerings and patio seating on the first floor and a fuller menu for the upstairs and terrace, with the Shawmut build team and Cuaik Arquitectos still finalizing a light, breezy, green interior similar to the group's Hacienda in Cabo. The menu is described as a fresh take on traditional Mexican cuisine that pulls heavily from Grupo Hunan's existing dishes—everything from carnitas and ceviches to tacos, birria, and desserts—with tortillas made in-house and the group's existing chefs overseeing the kitchen at the outset. Expect lunch through dinner service and a full bar featuring plenty of imported tequila and mezcal, with an anticipated arrival sometime this summer." - Farley Elliott
