The 38 Best Restaurants in Toronto, Canada

"Open for: Lunch and dinnerPrice range: $$$Chef-owner Patrick Kriss of Alo Food Group has amassed an empire of restaurants across the city, starting with his flagship fine-dining enterprise Alo in 2015. While it’s still notoriously challenging to land a reservation there, sister spot Aloette is more accessible and friendlier on the pocketbook. Kriss’s oxymoronic “upscale diner” features burgers, fries, and other usual suspects, but everything is finessed and fancified. The fried chicken is laced with yuzu honey; parfaits are engorged with foie gras; and golden spuds are zhuzhed up with bloody mary aioli.Know before you go: There are now two locations. The original (on Spadina) offers lunch on Fridays only, and brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. The newer spot on Bay Street is open for lunch Monday through Friday, but does not do weekend brunch service." - Tiffany Leigh

Aloette

"Open since 2017, this stylish bistro remains one of the coolest reservations in town. Chef Patrick Kriss and his well-oiled restaurant group again demonstrate that they have the Midas touch. With the tasting menu-only ALO just upstairs, the team here is impressively polished in this diner setting. No wider than a train car, the cozy space offers satisfying, approachable dishes that look and taste far better than imagined. Iceberg wedges dressed in chive cream arrive under a mountain of puffed wild rice. A complimentary loaf of cheddar brioche wouldn’t be out of place on white tablecloth. Everyone wants the burger. And for dessert, there must be pie. The signature lemon meringue is a towering finale that will have you rolling out the door." - Michelin Inspector

The 38 Essential Toronto Restaurants

"Chef-owner Patrick Kriss of Alo Food Group has amassed an empire of restaurants across the city, starting with his flagship Alo in 2015 and moving on to sister diner Aloette, Alobar Yorkville, delivery operation Aloette Go, and Alobar Downtown. While it’s virtually impossible to land a reservation at Alo these days, Aloette is more accessible, and friendlier on the pocketbook, too. Kriss’s oxymoronic “upscale diner” features the usual suspects, such as chicken wings, fries, and burgers, but everything is finessed and fancified. Confit chicken wings are dotted with XO dashi jus; beet salad is invigorated with fresh burrata; and golden spuds are saddled up with bloody mary aioli." - Tiffany Leigh

We initially went for the weekend brunch and wow! One of best brunches I’ve eaten in Toronto so far. The shakshuka was amazing, literally the best I’ve ever eaten in all my life. We liked we so much we went again for the weekday lunch, tried the fried chicken again loved it. They have happy hour on Friday from 3-6, all drinks are half off which is great because we tried all the cocktails in the menu and liked them all. Last but not the least the complimentary bread and butter that they give is heavenly, I literally had to request our waiter to please get us some more. Would highly recommend this place to everyone.

Follow @bredgyeats on IG for more food posts! Aloette is a place where your taste buds go to die and then are reborn. First, some complimentary pillow-soft cheese bread that warms up your soul, amazingly aromatic paired with the whipped butter. Thankfully our adventure just started. The beef tartare was a great balance of flavours, umami, sour, slight richness and fresh green pepper. The mustard seeds gave it that much-needed crunch. I had to turn the one biter into two to really enjoy it. The crispy squash is the highlight, a delicate crispy layer and a gooey interior paired with a rich hollandaise sauce and sweet pumpkins makes this extremely addicting. I almost ordered another. The burger and fries was like a quintessential, classic burger elevated. Juicy patty, fragrant brioche bun and beaufort cheese with a slight funk makes it a unctuous bite. To go out with a bang, torched meringue is wonderfully topped onto a silky smooth lemon pie. Just a perfect balance between tangy and sweet, so that you don't walk home feeling congested. The crust adds an essential crunch and overall texture to the pie, making you jump for joy for each bite.

Aloette pleasantly surprised me, in the best way. The food was absolutely delicious, especially the salad and the hamburger, one of the best I’ve ever had. Aloette’s unique take on both dishes is highly recommended. The place is small, petit in a charming, cozy way. We sat at the counter due to limited seating, but it still made for a great experience. The service was attentive and friendly as well. I’d definitely go back and recommend this spot to anyone looking to explore bold, elevated flavors in a relaxed setting.

I visit this spot each time I visit Toronto. The bar setup is perfect for solo travellers looking for a good meal and they have some delicious options! I always look forward to the complimentary cheese bread and whipped butter. Service is also top notch.

Ok, you've already read all the great reviews on the food and service of this place so I don't need to go over that. What I do want to mention is how AWESOME their music is that they play! When I heard hiphop songs that I would absolutely never hear out at a restaurants, my whole dining experience changed. It's great that they play all kinds of music especially the hiphop songs. I fully support the music choice and wanted the management to know! Amazing dining experience all around.

The servers were very friendly and attentive, which I appreciated. However, the music in the restaurant was a bit too loud, making it difficult to hold a conversation. In terms of the food, I was underwhelmed considering the price. The burger patty, fries, and especially the taco bread were quite dry. The taco itself was overly crisp and hard to eat, and the dryness of the taco bread in particular made it even more difficult to chew. The beans were also a disappointment—they were a bit too crunchy and hard for my liking, and they didn’t pair well with the sauce they came with. It felt like you were either only tasting the beans or only tasting the sauce, without any real harmony between the two. When I ordered the crepes, I was surprised to receive something that looked and tasted more like baked banana bread—unfortunately, no one mentioned this unusual presentation when I placed the order. That said, the steak was a pleasant surprise—flavorful and tender, clearly prepared with care. It showed that the kitchen does have skill when everything comes together. One suggestion I’d make, especially for a place serving brunch, is to consider adding an espresso machine. Currently, they only offer drip coffee, which limits the experience for coffee lovers looking for a richer or more customizable option. I haven’t tried their dinner menu yet, so I’m curious to see if that part of the experience might offer a better impression.

Let me stat of by saying I love this restaurant! And I do recommend it to anyone that has never had the opportunity to try it out. I have been coming here for years and they dont disappoint. They have a great cocktail list - their speciality cocktail list is small but they are all unique and stand out. They can make you most classics is you ask! Wine list is also not extensive, but if you like wine you will not be disappointed! Food wise! The classics are the wedge salad ($22) - which is a generous portion and great for sharing, perfect ratio of all the ingredients. Next is the burger ($22), it never disappoints, there’s a reason they are known for it. This time around I had the tuna tartare w/ shiso leaf ($32) - it’s simple and refreshing, but the shiso is great. The octopus carpaccio ($28)- MUST TRY, it is an amazing dish, the octopus is very delicate and the romesco and cherry tomatoes go perfectly. Next is the torched hamachi crudo ($32), the coconut sauce brings beautiful flavours to the fish. The beef tartare ($24) in my opinion is a skip, it’s fine but it doesn’t wow me in the same way the other dishes do. The Novia Scotia lobster ($46) is a very tasty dish, but its basically steamed lobster mussels and clams and then you are dipping it into a poblano butter, in my opinion just make this at home and save your money. All in all, a great restaurant. It is definitely a pricey dinner, averaging at abut $30 a dish, and $18 a cocktail/ glass of wine. It’s not an everyday type of place, but it’s a fun place to check out. Side note: it gets quite noisy when the restaurant is full.

I’ve been here twice now, and I’ll definitely be coming back. Everything I’ve tried on the menu has been outstanding! I particularly loved the complimentary cheese bread, and standout dishes included the mussels, iceberg wedge salad, Brussels sprouts, and the Painted Water cocktail. The entire menu is consistently excellent, and the service is top-notch as well. Highly recommend this spot! (The photos below are from 2 separate visits)
