Man Fatally Stabbed in Ventura Restaurant While Daughter Sat in Lap | Eater LA

"While dining with his wife and five-year-old daughter (who was sitting on his lap) at a crowded restaurant in Ventura, 35-year-old Anthony Mele was randomly stabbed in the neck by a man later identified as Jamal Jackson, described by police as a local vagrant and believed to have had no prior connection to the victim. Patrons and an employee chased the suspect after he fled, and he was taken into custody; authorities later revealed they had been called about the suspect's behavior earlier the same day but had not found him to be a threat. Mele was taken off life support and died the following day; the suspect is held on $1.5 million bail and faces a first-degree murder charge. The victim's family has launched a GoFundMe to cover funeral costs and is currently about $6,000 short of its $100,000 goal; he is survived by his wife and daughter." - Mona Holmes

Excellent service from Bo and our waiter who was training him. Food was absolutely delicious- the clam chowder is a 10! If nothing else, go there to try it. I had a macadamia encrusted halibut and my spouse had the herbed chicken. Garlic mashed potatoes, and fresh asparagus. We brought home a cheesecake with caramel sauce. Watch the surfers and passersby while you eat. Beautiful pier just outside the window. Modern surf decor. Clean restrooms. Beautiful bar. Reasonably priced for what it is nowadays. They validate the parking for 2 hours.

I recently visited Aloha Statehouse, and the experience was exceptional from start to finish. This restaurant combines a welcoming island-inspired atmosphere with high-quality food and friendly service, making it a place I would gladly return to. We sampled a variety of dishes during our visit — soup, shrimp, burgers, and items from the kids’ menu — and everything exceeded our expectations. The soup was rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. It had a comforting depth, the kind that warms you from the inside and immediately sets the tone for a great meal. The ingredients tasted fresh, and the seasoning was just right, neither too bold nor too mild. The shrimp were another highlight. They were cooked perfectly — tender, juicy, and seasoned with a light tropical flair that really matched the restaurant’s Hawaiian theme. Each bite felt fresh and vibrant, with a flavor that made you want to order a second plate. We also tried their burgers, which were surprisingly impressive. The patties were juicy, the buns were soft yet sturdy, and the toppings were fresh and thoughtfully chosen. It’s the kind of burger that feels satisfying without being overly heavy. Even the kids’ menu stood out. Portions were generous, the food was prepared with care, and everything looked appetizing — something that’s not always the case with children’s options at other restaurants. Our little one enjoyed the meal just as much as we did. Overall, Aloha Stake House delivers excellent food, a relaxed atmosphere, and consistently high quality across the entire menu. It’s a great place for families, casual dinners, or simply enjoying a delicious meal with a touch of island charm. I highly recommend it.

Aloha steakhouse was suggested by a friend and in my stay in Ventura I descide to try. The salman is absolutely delicious. The food is so delicious that I went back the next day for dinner and try their filet mignon and it was amazing the meet melted in my mouth. I take my hat to the chef. Awesome. Super friendly staff and very accommodating. I do recommend it if you are in Ventura.

Rib Eye Steaks 🥩, Wedge salads, chocolate souffle and banana's foster OH MY! Food was delicious, service was great and ambiance fun with an Ocean view. Watch people stroll along the boardwalk as you make up your own stories as they pass by while the server flambes your bananas foster table side. There is a kids menus, paid parking with 2 hr validation. A great place for a fun dinner with family or friends.

We came to Aloha Steakhouse on a Sunday evening around 5 PM. Even though it was pretty busy, we were seated right away. Our waiter was kind, attentive, and made us feel very welcome. We had a booth which was perfect for our small kids. They even gave them crayons and coloring books to keep them entertained. The atmosphere was really nice and upscale but still family friendly which we really appreciated. We even had a view of the ocean from our booth and the noise level was just right, not too loud. The food was outstanding. We had the ribeye cooked rare and it was absolutely perfect. The steak came with steamed vegetables that were fresh and flavorful. Our kids had cheeseburgers and fries and we also tried the craft burger with fries. The fries were crispy and delicious across the board. Multiple staff members checked on us throughout the meal but it never felt overwhelming. Sometimes restaurants overdo it but this was just outstanding service from start to finish. Overall it was a great experience with amazing food, excellent service, and a comfortable environment for families. We will definitely be back.

Me and my spouse came here to celebrate our anniversary for future reference it’s better to make a reservation cause this place gets packed even on a week day. The food here was really good we tried the artichoke dip with the jalapeño toast and was so good I really need to know how they make that toast also tried the teriyaki chicken which was also really good but extremely overpriced! paid $30 for a piece of chicken and a slice of grilled pineapple not mention that it only comes with one side for that price we should I least get two! Overall I did enjoy the service from our waitress.

Google
Aloha steakhouse is the best place to eat in all of Ventura. I had an amazing server by the name of Valerie Garbe. She was amazing to talk to took care of me with every fiber in he being. She made me feel like family while I was there. The food was good and the atmosphere was good but the service was phenomenal. The one reason I would definitely recommend this place is because of Valerie she truly made the experience unforgettable ❤️

We stayed another day in Ventura. We decided to try out Aloha Steak in Ventura on a Wednesday evening, right by the beach near the pier, this place was lively! Even midweek, it was packed, but we got a table quickly and checked out their happy hour menu, which was seriously awesome. We got a bit carried away with the ordering—the clam chowder was a total standout, super creamy and bursting with flavor. The chicken satay was alright but a little dry. The fish and chips were solid, with flaky fish and perfectly crispy fries. And the shrimp cocktail? Those shrimps were huge and super fresh. Service was a bit slow, likely because of a big party in the restaurant keeping the staff busy. Still, the food quality was top-notch, and the ocean view from our table was fantastic—such a great Ventura beach vibe. Plus, free parking with validation was a nice perk. If you’re after a vibrant spot for a meal by the water, Aloha Steak’s a solid choice for a weeknight or any night!

Yelp
Returned to Aloha for my birthday dinner last week and overall had a nice experience. The drinks are always great here - the Malibu Third Point is my favorite! I loved the herb crusted salmon as well as the sides of creamed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes. Perfectly cooked salmon for the 3 of us who ordered it. The entrees come with one side but I love that you can add additional sides for only $3 (including a side salad or soup). I took some of my dinner home and it was equally as good the next day. The prices were reasonable as well. Our server was just fine - he was friendly but did seem to forget about us on a couple of occasions. Ambiance is one of the main reasons people come here - hard to beat that ocean view! Be sure to bring your parking ticket if you park in the structure as they will validate for two hours!

Yelp
First, the positives! Service was friendly and attentive, and the artichoke and mushroom appetizer was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Both the regular ribeye and the filet were cooked perfectly and very enjoyable. Now, the disappointments. Unfortunately, the Alaskan King Crab legs--one of the main reasons I chose this restaurant--have apparently been off the menu for over a year, though they're still listed online. The Cowboy Ribeye was far too salty; it truly tasted like a mistake. We should have sent it back, but that's never easy to do in the moment. The lamb was also slightly overcooked, so if you prefer it pink, I'd recommend ordering it medium rare. I had noted in our reservation that we were celebrating two birthdays, but that went unacknowledged. We were also seated at a table right by the front door, with no view--disappointing, especially since I'm a local and had chosen this restaurant to give my out-of-town guests an ocean-view experience. Overall, while the service and a few dishes were excellent, several missed details and unfulfilled expectations left the evening feeling less special than I had hoped.

Yelp
Service was embarrassingly slow but nothing compares to the disappointment of the filet. Knowing they had "black and blue" fillets on the menu we specifically asked if they could do "rare or blue if possible but not charred - no char" and we were told yes. The food came out overly charred and after bringing it up it was taken back. Second time it came out it was pretty much the same but instead of complaining we cut into it, inspected and left it. For context: A blue steak is very rare, with a cool red center and a minimal, uncharred exterior, while a black and blue steak has a heavily charred, black exterior and a cool red, rare center, resulting from being cooked on extremely high heat for a very short time. Photos are from the second attempt because I would never judge a place on their first attempt.

Yelp
I had a work party at Aloha steakhouse, it was a great time. Our servers were Christie and Evan. They were great. I do have to give a shout out to Evan. I was disappointed about a small piece of cheesecake I received for our dessert. He switched it out with a bigger piece. I was so happy. LOL! I didn't even ask, he was that attentive to the party. We were a rowdy bunch and other guests were probably annoyed by us, but we had a great time and we are very thankful for the service.

Yelp
Beautiful views of the ocean. Ask for patio seating if weather is nice. The service was great, everyone super friendly. Validated parking for 2 hours in the annex structure. The spicy margarita is great and spicy, so if you don't love spicy drinks, don't get it. The food was ok. The sirloin was just blah. The rib eye aloha cut was much better. The scallops were a little overcooked.

Yelp
I started with the incredible wedge salad -- the large head of lettuce was fresh and crisp. The tomatoes were ripe and paired well with the tangy blue cheese dressing. The blue cheese crumbles cheese crumbles rounded out the dish perfectly. I'm vegetarian, so I ordered mine without bacon. For my entree, I ordered the Bistro Vegan Burger. Since converting to vegetarianism, I'm not able to eat burgers as often as I used to. I otherwise would have missed out on this burger in my carnivorous days. It was terrific, and not once did I miss a beef patty. I'm not sure what the patty was composed of (I don't think it was Impossible or Beyond), but it was sizable and meaty. The vegan mozzarella cheese added a familiar, tasty layer of creaminess. However, the star of the show was the blend of caramelized onions and mushrooms -- the rich, earthy flavor of the mushroom was elevated by the sweetness of the caramelized onions. I ate the vegan bacon separately. I find the artificial smoke flavor too overpowering, and I don't think it would have added much to the sandwich. I also ate the spring mix separately as eating the burger as a handheld was difficult as is. The fries were also excellent -- lightly seasoned and fried to perfect crisp. The service was excellent, and I liked the laid-back atmosphere. I hope to return soon to explore the menu.

Yelp
Food delicious, Drinks delicious. Music on point. Also we had such a great experience tonight thanks to our server, Beau. His attitude, professionalism, and genuine care were top-notch. He went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. He even remade our meal without hesitation and with such a gracious attitude. You don't always find service like this anymore. We left feeling well taken care of and truly appreciated. Highly recommend asking for him!

Yelp
I took my husband for his birthday since it has been his favorite place to eat. The service was friendly. No one was at the desk when we arrived but came after a few minutes. He was super friendly. Our waiter was nice too. The dinner salads were great as always but my waiter asked if I wanted blue cheese crumbles instead. He forgot to add them and then told me he forgot them. I said not to worry about it, that I didn't need them. I didn't know I was going to be up charged $1 for them anyway or I would have had him bring them. I wanted to order the macadamia crusted fish. I asked where the fish was from and was told New Zealand - a change from the previous fish from Vietnam. My confusion - there is an ocean with fresh delicious fish literally right outside the door. The fish they brought me was clearly frozen and thawed. Slightly chewy but covered in macadamia crust and a sauce that was good enough to make the fish taste better. My question, why are they not buying local rockfish???? The dish would have been absolutely worth the $35 price tag. My husband enjoyed his baseball cut steak. Another in our party ordered the crusted lampchops and they were overcooked. I realize this is a steakhouse but they advertise seafood as well. With an ocean full of fish next door, seems ridiculous to buy frozen fish from across the world.

Yelp
The ambiance was very nice... loud, but nice. We researched the day before. Looking for crab legs. Which was on the menu on line & on the menu when we got there. But when we tried to order it, we were told they hadn't served crab in over a year! The whole experience was a challenge. From sitting us at a dirty table, no salt & pepper, unlite candle, waitress would ask us questions while walking by, lobster was dry & chewy. It was just a lot of things wrong & not associated with fine dining.

Yelp
From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality. The ambiance was inviting, setting the perfect tone for an evening of treating ourselves! The food, the ambience, the lighting, the view of the ocean, and the service.... all superb!! Everything was cooked to perfection!

Yelp
Fantastic Food and Server (Valerie). Right on the Pacific Ocean next to Ventura Pier. Great Menu too. The Best and strongest Mai Tai I've had in a long time. We'll keep coming here!

Diane ..

Yelp
Overpriced food for the quality. Don't make the mistake of getting the Lobster tail.. it was so overcooked and tasted very" tanky" as though it had been in a fish tank for far too long:( I have to say that the steaks there aren't much better. Low quality meat cuts that have a strange texture about them. Chewy and not tasty. Sorry, I just haven't been happy with this establishment.

Yelp
Had my 40th birthday dinner here tonight with a large group and they did amazing. Katie our server was top notch and on top of everything, very accommodating! Definitely recommend for a special occasion. Amazing cocktails and food. The BEST service. Thank you again Katie and all who helped us out! You guys went above and beyond!

Yelp
Sneaky! When I got my bill, it had a "helpful" chart to calculate the "Suggested Tip Amounts." So I added the suggested 20% tip of $12.00. Not until I got home did I realize that they had already snuck in a "20% Gratuity" of $12.00, and I had given an "Addl Tip" of another $12.00. I have heard that other restaurants are doing this. I did not spend a lot of time studying the receipt before I signed it, but in the future I guess I will have to.

Yelp
We came for an early Father's Day lunch and it was great! Very kid friendly our server Madison was great she was good with our kids. We had rib eye steak which was delicious and a cup of clam chowder which was good but not life changing! Their wedge salad was 10 out of 10! Kids food came out fast which is always a plus! We definitely will be back until next time!

Yelp
One of the great advantages of vacation is the opportunity for progressive dining. While we had dinner elsewhere (no reflection on having a good steak dinner, we were in the mood for something else) we decided to come here for dessert. The staff was accommodating, appreciated the timing for the dessert prep and took the effort to check options for us. We also found this restaurant a great place for activities. We came specifically for the Volcano Soufflé. This takes 25 for preparation, so we ordered quickly. In the interim we saw Bananas Foster being made, see pic. And there was a small birthday jubilee close by, see my pic. The birthday bunch was having a great time with the frame et al. So the 25 minutes went by very quickly. While the Volcano Soufflé didn't have the presentation of the menu picture, it was still quite decadent and rich, see my pic. While the chocolate cake was good, the molten center was great. Not to make this any sweeter, the molten chocolate was heightened with the crunch of the Heath Bar on top (you can see this in my pic). The ice cream was sweet and creamy. This was a great way to end the day. Also pictured was our glass of Port that we had with our Soufflé.

Yelp
We came for happy hour and sat at the bar side. Although there was a crowd it wasn't overly busy. Our waitress was attentive but the food and drinks came out a bit slow. The Maui Martini looked pretty but there wasn't much flavor and I barely tasted any alcohol. The Spicy Margarita also looked pretty and was ok, but it was too spicy for me so I removed the jalapeño from the drink but the whole drink was already spicy. If you like a bit of heat in your drink then you might enjoy this. I also didn't taste much alcohol in this one either. My friend tried the Mai Tai and she said it tasted good but strong. So I guess it depends on what you order since both my drinks were light. The spinach dip w/ jalapeño toast tasted good. The seared Ahi Tuna wrap was presented very pretty and tasted quite yummy with the wasabi sauce. The sliders came with regular hamburger patties, but you can upgrade the patty to prime rib for an additional $3, we opted to try it as is. It came with cheese only so was quite plain and the bun was too dense, especially the top part. Since the patty was small and the bun was thick I tasted more bread than meat. The fries were good and crispy. For the chicken satay you can select grilled or blackened. We got the grilled ones, it came with 4 skewers and a side of peanut sauce. It was tasty. Everything was ok but nothing really amazed me. They offer decent options for their happy hour so will have to come back to try the other items on the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
If you've never been here before, I highly recommend it! You cannot beat their food menu - great fish and seafood options. The service is always super quick, very friendly, and the environment is second to none. We love this place and it's a must stop when we're in town!

Yelp
Amazing family establishment that hosted my dad's 70th birthday celebration! Very accommodating & delicious drinks as well. Decor felt like we were in Hawaii all from the comfort of Ventura beach.

Yelp
we came for happy hour and it was a great experience! the food was amazing and reasonable prices. for food we had the seared ahi tuna wrap, chicken satay and the fish & chips. and for drinks we had the liquid candy and a dirty martini. manny was amazing and very personable. restrooms were clean lol very great atmosphere over all!! we'll definitely be back!!

Yelp
Love the ambiance. Love that's it's by the beach. The service is always great and the food is always perfect. My boys love the fish and chips. My hubby loves the steak (they cook part of it next to your table). If you like bloody Mary's they are very tasty.
google avatar

Anastacia M.

Yelp
Special shout out to Evan our amazing server who seated us just in time to partake of the delicious happy hour menu! Great beer and wine as always and a view of the ocean! Perfect! Tried the mushrooms this time and they were cooked and spiced to perfection! I also had the Ahi Tuna wraps with fantastic sauce. My friend liked her veggie wraps and chicken satay. Evan was on point refilling our drinks and turning on the heat lamps! This is my favorite Ventura happy hour spot!
google avatar

Lenny T.

Yelp
Evan was an amazingly attentive waiter!!! He made excellent recommendations based on what we were interested in. LOVED the pistachio crusted rack of lamb and the breading on the fish and chips was perfectly crispy. Thank you so much Evan for making our first visit to Aloha exemplary :)

Jet B.

Yelp
I'm a bit conflicted with this review because the staff and their service was great. The ambiance of Aloha, right next to the beach, paired with the great weather, is phenomenal. However, when it came down to our dish(es), it was a bit lacking. The calamari was bland - along with its accompanying sauce. The Seared Ahi Tuna, was "seared" inconsistently - one cut was perfect, while the other cut was only seared on one side. The nail to the coffin was our seared scallops with the "coconut rice". The rice had a very bitter aftertaste. The explanation for this was the bok choy that it came with. Further explanation was that the ratio for the sauce was incorrect when they made the coconut rice... if this was known by the cook, then why serve it?! We returned the dish and made the best from the rest of our order.

Mat A.

Yelp
Great restaurant. One of the most reasonably priced restaurants that's near the harbor. Best option for food for anywhere by the Ventura pier. Food is a bit on the pricier side for the regular menu, but it is par for course for the area. The real value is in their lunch specials - you get a good salad, a generous serving of their entree, rice, and a drink for $15. Good drinks. The Hakuna Matata is a favorite of mine. Also allow dogs outside and have a food option for them as well. A favorite lunch destination.

Yelp
This is a steakhouse that combines Eastern and Western cuisine . And it provides high-quality surf and turf dishes. We stopped by this restaurant for dinner on a trip to Dana point. We all tried a seafood dish. My parents-in-law shared the salmon and a cup of lobster soup. My husband had the sea scallops, and I had the daily fish special. We loved the scollops the best. I strongly recommend the fish dishes that are freshly caught daily. Because the portion is bigger, the fish is tender and it was perfectly cooked without any smell. Also, the sauce was amazing and I think it went well with the rice. In conclusion, it was a great dining experience. The food quality is good with great service and an excellent atmosphere with a large menu selection. We will come back again soon.

Yelp
The service was fantastic. The ambiance was lovely. The food was good. The art and atmosphere were fun.

Vance C.

Yelp
My wife and I were very happy. Staff was very cool, especially (I am terrible with names) Catlain/Calia, I apologize. I had the Kenny fillet flambeau ($57) and we ordered two appetizers ($20 each). The steak on toast with sauce appetizer (awesome) and CoCoNut shrimp was good. The wife had the chicken with grilled pineapple on top. Sides were a stuffed potato for her and creamy tomato soup for her. A little pricey but you're on the beach near the pier so it is what it is. Sodas and water only. Total was around $150 plus $30 (20%) tip, $180.

Yelp
Now that was dinner with a view. Came for my birthday with my hubby and right away I was greeted with a beautiful smile by the sweetest hostess Mia. She took us to our table and immediately had someone turn on the heater for us. The restaurant is so nice but the view of the sunset was my favorite view. We started with a wedge salad and it was so good. Had up it did have blue cheese but the right amount. I loved it! Then the oysters and they were really de-li-cious! For dinner I got the Kenny's Table Side Filet Mignon and what an experience when the light the veggies on fire wooo. And We finished the night with a Volcano Souffle and this was just chocolate and icecream heaven. I'm so so full and satisfied.

Yelp
Grood restaurant in a nice location. The food is good but it's not the best around. The location is everything about this spot. A few steps from the beach and water. I have been to this restaurant at least a dozen times in the bast 10 years and nothing really drives me back home except the people I'm with. This last time the steak was tough. The Kona pie was excellent. The drinks were great.

Yelp
I have been here once before, service was outstanding, appetizer spinach dip was good, salad was great. My husband got their steak which he enjoyed, and I got their macadamia fish dish, which I wasn't really impressed about the server happily took the meal back however, I did not have another order of the food. I came back with a friend and had some drinks here we enjoyed it. is great from here. I recommend it to friends and family.

Yelp
Striking location, exceptional view! We had King Crab legs and they were perfectly cooked and a decent portion. Loaded Baked potato was a nice size. Everything was fresh & delicious. Wonderful, friendly service from Lisa. BUT the Bananas Foster Dessert was the star of the evening!!! Don't know how that's possible when everything was top of the line, but the table side service of the flambéed bananas was so well executed and beyond divine tasting. Do not miss out on the Bananas Foster dessert! Highly recommended.

Yelp
The steak salad is the best lunch deal in Ventura. $15 with a drink and the steak was cooked to perfection. The wait staff is always attentive and friendly.

Yelp
The food is always excellent. I love the Crustini appetizer, the coconut shrimp, their steaks, especially the ribeye. Great wine selection, but also have great house wine to save a little cash. We have celebrated birthdays, promotions and just friends for dinner. The "patio" has a great ocean view, and a walk along the promenade to settle your dinner is always great. All of the employees are inviting and always service with a smile.

Breanna R.

Yelp
Food was decent. Service was okay even though we hardly saw our waiter since he was mainly on the other side of the restaurant. He was polite and would apologize when he would stop by but we did have to ask a few other servers walking by for things. When we were paying, we also gave the waiter our parking pass to validate but unfortunately he lost it. He gave us a receipt with a stamp saying that'll cover it but it didn't. We had to pay the maximum for parking since we had a "lost ticket" even though we had been there for less than 2 hours. Overall, we most likely won't decide to come back because we didn't get the best first impression.

Yelp
Refund of overcharge received and the kindness phone call. Thank you. And apologies. Thank you. We will give your restaurant another try. :)

Yelp
Everything was wonderful... the manager, staff, location and food!! We had an amazing birthday celebration. I would not hesitate to host another party at Aloha Steakhouse. They were so accommodating, even the tiny dancers had fun! Thank you for making the night extra special.

Yelp
Joleen and was a great waitress. Super attentive, nice, curious about us, and our stay in Ventura. Manager Dan was really nice to stop by our table multiple times and talk story. Loved being beach front and view of the pier. We had a couple of Mai Tai's, split a double prime rib and loved it. The bananas foster topped off our night. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Aloha Steakhouse is a lovely restaurant with delicious food and excellent service. I've enjoyed many meals here, and last night I attended a birthday party with eight friends in Aloha's beautiful front dining room with a full ocean view. I was particularly impressed with Lisa's kind, caring and efficient service. She was patient with multiple questions and able to accommodate special requests (including gluten-free). Everyone at our table received their food hot and fresh, all at the same time. Aloha's wonderful manager, Dan, always stops by the table to make sure everything is going well, which we really appreciate. When the cake was served, our birthday girl was delighted with Aloha's special photo op, too! I have Celiac disease and am delighted to be able to enjoy such a great restaurant. Two of my favorite dishes are the mushroom-stuffed artichoke appetizer and the seared scallops with coconut rice, spinach and bok choy. In addition, Aloha's maragaritas (my fave) are all made with agave and fresh lime, and their bananas foster dessert is absolutely amazing! Thank you and keep up the great work, Aloha Steakhouse!

Yelp
The food was delicious. Don't skip the appetizers. The black and bleu crostinis were amazing and my husband loved the calamari, he loves the tentacles. Daisy was a delightful waitress and our window seat with ocean views was spectacular. The decor and artwork are beautiful. Truly a lovely upscale restaurant at the beach. We will go again for sure! This was a birthday celebration for my hubby with friends and we had a delightful afternoon.

Yelp
We had THE BEST server, Evan. He literally was on top of everything. He made our evening special by far. The food was good too, my husband had a steak and baked potato and I had the fish a chips. The mud ice cream thing and chocolate lava cake... Died and went to Heaven. Nice atmosphere and location is good. Can't wait to go back!
