"While dining with his wife and five-year-old daughter (who was sitting on his lap) at a crowded restaurant in Ventura, 35-year-old Anthony Mele was randomly stabbed in the neck by a man later identified as Jamal Jackson, described by police as a local vagrant and believed to have had no prior connection to the victim. Patrons and an employee chased the suspect after he fled, and he was taken into custody; authorities later revealed they had been called about the suspect's behavior earlier the same day but had not found him to be a threat. Mele was taken off life support and died the following day; the suspect is held on $1.5 million bail and faces a first-degree murder charge. The victim's family has launched a GoFundMe to cover funeral costs and is currently about $6,000 short of its $100,000 goal; he is survived by his wife and daughter." - Mona Holmes
