If You Are Traveling to Venice, Here Are the 8 Wineries You Have to Visit

"A family-run, biodynamically farmed estate tracing back to 1823, headquartered on the Löwengang estate in Magre along the Alto Adige Wine Route. The property operates as an integrated agricultural organism—keeping pigs and oxen, a large vegetable garden and partnerships with numerous local growers—to support a root-to-table philosophy at its Vineria Paradeis restaurant and a broader commitment to biodiversity. Visitors can take guided tours, attend dinners and cultural events (including artist-musical residencies and the Summa wine fair), enjoy lunches that reinterpret family recipes, and purchase preserves and fermented products made on site. The estate’s Römigberg Schiava is a fresh, light-bodied red with low alcohol that pairs well with salumi, pizza and lighter meats." - Federico De Cesare Viola

Exploring Biodynamics with Clemens Lageder at Alois Lageder Estate

"Founded in 1823, Alois Lageder is the largest biodynamic estate in Italy, with almost 140 acres of vines. The winery’s portfolio, ranging from regional to site-specific bottlings, reflects the diversity of the mountainous region, where elevation, aspect and varying soil structures provide endless microclimates for an array of grapes both local and international: Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Müller Thurgau, Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc as well as Schiava, Lagrein, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir." - Erin Brooks

This winery absolutely blew us away! We’ve done several tastings in Alto Adige, but this one was truly exceptional. We came for the “History and Future” tasting followed by lunch, and it exceeded all expectations. Our tasting was led by Elkie who was both warm and incredibly knowledgeable. We’re deeply grateful for the experience and will definitely be back!

We just came back from winery Alois Lageder this week and we have to say the tour was such a highlight during our trip in Sudtirol! Firstly, we received immediate help on the phone after getting lost to parking. Second, after arrival we were welcomed and led to their lovely paradise garden for a cup of espresso. Thirdly, Luca, our tour guide showed us some of the surrounding such as building, wine yard, wine cellar and production. Meanwhile, he gave us a comprehensive explanation of the biodynamics and diversity of nature. We enjoyed the tour a lot and love the story behind. Can’t not wait enjoying the wines we purchased at home. They also have a lovely restaurant, using their own vegetable and meat. Will definitely pay a visit next time. Again thank you very much for the team!

Fine winery and restaurant. Slow but friendly service. Wines in restaurant at a small plus compared to shop. Good stemware. Recommended!

This winery is a gem! We came here for a wine tasting and lunch, expecting something simple and were blown away. The tasting was performed by a very nice man from Peru - I believe his name was Elkie - who was friendly and knowledgeable. He even made an effort to speak with us in English. The tasting room is tucked away at the end of a stunning cul-de-sac and must be seen to be believed. The attention to detail - from the beautiful seat cushions to the locally curated olive oils - meant that we could have stayed all day. We will certainly be back and were very grateful for the experience.

All your senses will be entertained. The spirit of the location the careful prepared dishes and the philosophy of a nonconformity way to produce excellent vine. Feel and enjoy. Definitely recommend this place!!!

We did the tour at Alois Lageder and it was truly one of the best tours I’ve ever done at a winery. We felt very welcomed by our tour guide and he told us all about the history, the vision on winemaking of the Lageder family and the winkemaking process while guiding us through the estate, vineyard and cellars. Of course also had a great tasting afterwards. Definitely worth a visit and if you have the time, do the tour!

I have been a restaurant buyer of Alois Lageder for a few years. I've purchased 40 or so cases to sell in my restaurants. When I got a tour, I was assigned to a run of the mill tour guide who, though sweet, seemed to take me more on a guided Disneyland tour. I simply wanted to meet someone from the winery, to establish a personal connection. 9 months later, I met one of the Lageder (daughters?) ladies at a wine event in Seattle only to come away with the continued sense of their indifference. The location is fantastic. The style is on point. The wine, sadly incredible when compared to the attitude. They could probably retire on their private wine collection (i.e. Sassicaia) in the cellar located in the main tasting room. I suppose the family becoming winemakers in 1855 has allowed them to climb the social ladder significantly. I appreciate the lunch they bought me but I would've preferred meeting someone over coffee. I've genuinely tried to make a personal connection with this place but I will seek other wines from Südtirol to provide my guests. If you want great wine & food, this is a fantastic option. If you're looking for heart from this winery, it might be laying with Ötzi

We had a lovely wine tasting and our server was knowledgeable, patient, answered all our questions, and gave a great introduction to the Alto Adige region and the excellent wines and philosophy at Alois Lageder. Their white wines are one of the stars of the region. Make a reservation if you want to eat at the restaurant. Bonus for being dog friendly.
