Your Guide to Eating in South Sacramento - Eater SF

"Alzono’s recently made a move for the first times since Jesus and Wanda Alonzo opened the beloved South Sacramento restaurant in 1969, jumping from one section of the Mid Century Modern shopping plaza to another in preparation for its demolition. While the menu does have American breakfast favorites like waffles and pancakes, most people come for the menudo and posole, the latter of which is a bowl of steaming hangover cure, containing bits of pork and tripe in a rich, red broth. Top it with a bit of cabbage, a squeeze of lemon and a spoonful of raw white onion for the full effect." - Illyanna Maisonet

Great place, Chilaquiles were great as where the hot pork chicana with eggs and potatoes. Both red and green salsas were great, they also have traditional American food in case you can't decide on what you're feeling or have less adventurous eaters with you. Service was very attentive and helpful.

Pozole: This is one of the best pozole I had in my life. It has everything you want in pozole. It was complex, strong, hearty, meaty, and had the right amount of oil. It makes you feel warm and refreshed on a cold day. It tasted like it was stewed for hours and was homemade; I could taste the chili and beef. The beef was so tender and there was a lot of it. I had 2 pieces of beef in every bite. The lime, cabbage, and onions cut the richness perfectly as well. It is seriously worth $15; it can feed up to 2 people. The tortilla was fresh and went perfectly with the hominy and beef. Every single bite was absolutely perfect. Chicken Enchilada Verde: I wasn't expecting this to be so good. I was craving for pozole, but the enchilada was next level. The chicken, tortillas, and salsa verde had a perfect balance. The chicken was soft, tender, and rich, and the salsa verde cut the richness perfectly. It had the perfect amount of cheese; it didn't overpower it. It was so delicious that I wanted to order a second one, but unfortunately, they ran out. This is a great sign at a restaurant; it means everything is fresh can be.

Ordered menudo to go ,there were no condoments, onions, cilantro or lemon, food was cold ,children's plate no syrup or butter, and for the machaka was very dry not even chili sauce was in my bag .I found all this out once I arrived home, sure it's mother's day today and they have people waiting for tables but food from their restaurant should not change as far as quality, the prices are still the same, so as a customer I am very disappointed, and will share my experience with family and friends

Haven't been here in years and I'm sorry I've missed out on great food. I had the carnitas. I am always skeptical when it comes to that pork but let me tell you I was very very pleased. It was exactly what I needed to start my Sunday. This will be my go to spot for now on. Price was cheap and I was served with politeness and genuine smiles.

We took a shot and drove up to Sacramento to try this restaurant out. It was worth it. The Menudo was killer and on point. Service was top notch. Always asking if we needed something ! However I didn’t give them five stars because. The Micheladas we ordered needed a little working on. Still good but needed some work. And if you’re going to serve menudo that good you should have home made tortillas… over all I will be coming back for that menudo… they killed that department.

Excellent chilaquiles verdes. Reasonable prices. Definitely use a lot of cheese in most of the dishes. Excellent weekend breakfast spot
