Your Guide to Eating in South Sacramento | Eater SF

"Alzono’s recently made a move for the first times since Jesus and Wanda Alonzo opened the beloved South Sacramento restaurant in 1969, jumping from one section of the Mid Century Modern shopping plaza to another in preparation for its demolition. While the menu does have American breakfast favorites like waffles and pancakes, most people come for the menudo and posole, the latter of which is a bowl of steaming hangover cure, containing bits of pork and tripe in a rich, red broth. Top it with a bit of cabbage, a squeeze of lemon and a spoonful of raw white onion for the full effect." - Illyanna Maisonet

Google
Great place, Chilaquiles were great as where the hot pork chicana with eggs and potatoes. Both red and green salsas were great, they also have traditional American food in case you can't decide on what you're feeling or have less adventurous eaters with you. Service was very attentive and helpful.

Google
Food was good but father in law LOVES the place. Husband's family grew up coming here & they all like it a lot. I think it's ok, so maybe just personal preference.

Pozole: This is one of the best pozole I had in my life. It has everything you want in pozole. It was complex, strong, hearty, meaty, and had the right amount of oil. It makes you feel warm and refreshed on a cold day. It tasted like it was stewed for hours and was homemade; I could taste the chili and beef. The beef was so tender and there was a lot of it. I had 2 pieces of beef in every bite. The lime, cabbage, and onions cut the richness perfectly as well. It is seriously worth $15; it can feed up to 2 people. The tortilla was fresh and went perfectly with the hominy and beef. Every single bite was absolutely perfect. Chicken Enchilada Verde: I wasn't expecting this to be so good. I was craving for pozole, but the enchilada was next level. The chicken, tortillas, and salsa verde had a perfect balance. The chicken was soft, tender, and rich, and the salsa verde cut the richness perfectly. It had the perfect amount of cheese; it didn't overpower it. It was so delicious that I wanted to order a second one, but unfortunately, they ran out. This is a great sign at a restaurant; it means everything is fresh can be.

Haven't been here in years and I'm sorry I've missed out on great food. I had the carnitas. I am always skeptical when it comes to that pork but let me tell you I was very very pleased. It was exactly what I needed to start my Sunday. This will be my go to spot for now on. Price was cheap and I was served with politeness and genuine smiles.

Google
We took a shot and drove up to Sacramento to try this restaurant out. It was worth it. The Menudo was killer and on point. Service was top notch. Always asking if we needed something ! However I didn’t give them five stars because. The Micheladas we ordered needed a little working on. Still good but needed some work. And if you’re going to serve menudo that good you should have home made tortillas… over all I will be coming back for that menudo… they killed that department.

Google
Excellent chilaquiles verdes. Reasonable prices. Definitely use a lot of cheese in most of the dishes. Excellent weekend breakfast spot

Google
Ordered menudo to go ,there were no condoments, onions, cilantro or lemon, food was cold ,children's plate no syrup or butter, and for the machaka was very dry not even chili sauce was in my bag .I found all this out once I arrived home, sure it's mother's day today and they have people waiting for tables but food from their restaurant should not change as far as quality, the prices are still the same, so as a customer I am very disappointed, and will share my experience with family and friends

Google
I've been going to Alonzo's since the 70's and their food seems to get better with the savory of time just like fine wine, they serve Chorizo and eggs, Menudo, Spicy 🔥 pork breakfast, As these are a few of the dishes that made Alonzo's famous in the Greater Sacramento area, Come on in and enjoy a meal in their bigger and better restaurant, with ample parking located in. the Fruitridge Manor shopping center

Yelp
Legendary breakfast spot. Great service and amazing food. Parking can be a bit of a pain but name a great restaurant with easy parking, I'll wait. Love the blend of Mexican and American food. Menudo and soups here always hit. Wait times here can vary. I've always had luck getting in and sat down quick. Double sided menu with something for EVERYONE. Came here with my dad and fiancee and we all ate good. Loved our food and ate every last bite. Since the renovation this place had a major facelift but the food remains as good as ever. The restaurant has gained in size and still remains packed as before. Highly recommend this classic breakfast spot Sacramento has.

Yelp
A Rare 5-Star Unicorn Review! Okay, folks, this is a rare one--I don't just hand out 5 stars, but this place? Well, they earned every single one. Not only was the food outstanding, but the staff was so friendly and welcoming. The service was spot on--attentive without being overbearing, which is exactly what you want when the people you're dining with are the real focus. I was a little skeptical when I saw the variety on the menu. Sometimes, a big menu can mean that the quality or flavor might fall short. But nope--I was totally wrong! Everything was delicious and exceeded my expectations. One of the ladies and a few people I know from church highly recommended this spot, and I'm so glad I took their advice. I'm officially a fan. The decor screams "family-owned and loved." The owner's parents and family have been running this business for decades, and you can feel the history and love in every corner. I even noticed photos on the wall of long-time customers who've been coming for years, and it inspired me to think, "Hey, I want to be one of those folks on the wall in about 10 years!" If the service, food, and atmosphere stay this great, I have no doubt that'll be me! Give this place a shot, and let me know what you think. You just might become a regular too!

Yelp
I've been wanting to give this place a tru for years! I always heard great things about their food but just never found myself compelled to visit. I've been recovering from a crazy migraine that had me down for a full week and i wanted something comforting so requested Alonzo's for breakfast! The place was busy but services was going and there was an open booth perfect for me and the hubby since it was open seating. I must say i like the way they have the menus on the table under a glass topper. It just makes sense! Because my migraine i only ordered pozole! Hubby ordered chillesquilles! Man the pozole is flavorful, i expected it to me hotter temp wise but i didnt bother to send back since i was full after only a few bites! Don't worry i took it home along with the homemade tortillas and heat it up right after my nap. The chillesquilles was pretty big and had good sauce to me. Hubby felt like the verde sauce overpowered the other flavors but i liked it. I want to come back and actually enjoy a full meal when I'm not recovering from a migraine cause they had some good things on the menu and great music playing.

Yelp
Family owned restaurant for generations. They have Mexican and American food. I've only had the Mexican food. The pozole is so good! I love me some good pozole. Our sever was a sweet young man that had just graduated high school. He was perfect. The restaurant had your typical cafe type setup and the vibe was very family oriented.
google avatar

Yelp
Lots of parking. Pricing isn't too bad. Clean with lots of indoor seating. Staff is attentive. Food was mediocre (edible but nothing out of this world). This was my first time here and will probably be my last.

Yelp
We used to own a house in the neighborhood, but had never been to Alonzo's. 20 years later, we went for breakfast on a Sunday. I had chilaquiles, which were good. They came with scrambled eggs on top, which was different. I'm used to having fried eggs, which I think I prefer. Our server was ok, seemed like maybe she was having a bad day. Overall, a good experience, we would definitely go back if we were in the area.

Yelp
30+ YEARS AND GOING! With a city that's ever growing, this place has always been here and is sure to stay. On Fruitridge and Stockton Blvd you'll see this in the updated plaza! Can't decide if you want Mexican or American? You can have both here at any time! Stop on it for their amazing breakfast and brunch offerings! There's a reason why they've stayed in business for so long and it's because of the chefs at work. They come seasoning the food to perfection. You can't go wrong with any selection.

Corina W.

Yelp
Great breakfast and love the tacos...reminds me of a restaurant in San Francisco I used to go to in the Mission. Family run, can be a little slow, they are working hard. Love this place, craving the tacos now.

Yelp
My sisters and I went out for breakfast at this cute little cozy restaurant where all the stuff were very kind with great public relations from the time we walked in we were greeted with kindness we were served amazing plates the food was excellent. So if you're looking for a cozy place to get together with friends or family this is a place to go will you be treated with kindness and respect!

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was about four or five years old. The food always hits the spot the vibes always nice and mellow great place to bring your family. I have never had any problem when I come here. I swear you will not be disappointed, service is always great unless they're busy

Stacey V.

Yelp
Yummy food... just get there early they get busy... service is good you just have to wait of you go late for breakfast or lunch
google avatar

Claudia W.

Yelp
First time here. Jaden was amazing. He was helpful with suggestions on what to order. We ordered pozole and menudo both were amazing! There are lots of choices both Mexican food and American food. We will definitely be coming back. They play my kind of oldies music too. Thank you for the great food, service and music

Yelp
Came in for breakfast with my BF on a Saturday. The place was busy and the wait time was short. There is a nice selection of breakfast and lunch. I would recommend sticking to the Mexican breakfast menu which is wonderful. I made the mistake of ordering the American breakfast. My omelette was over cooked, with brown baked edges. It was bland and lacked flavor. The hash browns were cold and flavorless. The sole reason for the 3 stars was based on my breakfast. My boyfriend ordered the huevos rancheros. The portion was large and very tasty. Excellent service and our food arrived quickly. Our sever was nice and very accommodating. Great prices and a nice menu selection. I'll be back for the menudos, which is the specialty.

Yelp
Hands down the best Pozole in Sacramento, Period!!!! A Comfy restaurant that's been updated because of the shopping center remodel but serving up the same Mexican/ American cuisine. The service is very attentive, place is clean and not too loud. The other food on the menu is good as well but in my opinion the star is the Pozole. Very good flavor with hominy and big chunks of tender beef. A must try but be prepared to go home and take a nap after.

Yelp
Best Pasole in Sacramento!!! I am so glad they remain open! I never order anything other than pasole thats how good it is! But its a staple in the south sac neighborhood and is loved by many! If you are looking for the best soup, check them out!
google avatar

Yelp
I always get Alonzo's to go because eating there is too much it's always busy. & the servers are not attentive to your needs. I asked for all flour tortillas but I guess they wanted to say there flour tortillas for the people eating there & only gave me one & the rest corn. Prime example of why I stopped tipping when ordering to go because you get home & something isn't always correct.

Yelp
What to say about this place. This restaurant has been here forever! I have eaten at this restaurant many times. It's a staple of the neighborhood and community. For this visit I went to my go-to and got the Hot Pork Chicana. The pork is so juicy and tender. The juices add to the potatoes. I always get an over easy egg, and that takes the dish to the next level. You can dip your tortillas in the juice. So good! After eating this meal you will be stuffed! We also ordered chilaquiles red sauce. Delicious. It has a nice spice to it. But not over powering. The beans and rice have a good flavor. You can't go wrong with this dish either. The restaurant has a new look since the plaza that it's located in received a major upgrade. Looks great. Staff has always been nice and service is quick. This is a restaurant I've gone to many times and will be going to many more times.

Yelp
I visited Alonzo's while searching for a good bowl of menudo and may have stumbled on a great place for breakfast or lunch. The menudo was maybe the best I have ever tasted in Sacramento, but the rest of the menu looked inviting ranging from American and Mexican breakfasts to Mexican lunch items. We were here one time on a weekend morning when the whole place was filled, but the service was very quick and pleasant as the servers are always knowledgeable and friendly whether the place is hopping or not. I have come back about five times for breakfast and have checked out other menu items and have been more than pleased..

Yelp
Super burrito was small (ie like a regular sized burrito) and 75% of it was beans (refried at that). Couldn't taste the asada and didn't see or taste any guacamole. And it was $13 for that.

Yelp
Great friendly service. Nice and clean location. Very good spicy salsa. They give you red and green. Menudo was good. Great visit.

Yelp
Delicious everytime I visit!!! I had one incident when there was Bair in my food but the customer service is so great that I will go back. Food is great and customer service is great which is big in todays world.

Yelp
Expensive and underwhelming. 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 small links for 12.50 plus tax and tip. Pancake not good, links probably cost like .25 cents each, processed stuff. I'll just eat at home. Mc donalds has better pancakes, big breakfast at mcdonalds is a better value.

Yelp
I went to Alonzo's 2 or 3 decades ago first time I had ever eaten Huevos Rancheros. It was great I loved it. They have moved a little further down the block due to renovation of the mall. Went there yesterday because I have been thinking of that first time. It was great like last time I had tried it other places not even close to them made my day. Best food anywhere so good
google avatar

Yelp
I am sitting here finishing my Chicken Chile Verde Pazole because I ordered the large yesterday. It feels like a warm, delicious hug this morning. Thank you for the deliciousness.

Yelp
This little place in a strip mall has truly amazing food. Breakfast and lunch. Have had both, but generally get the breakfast as they are generous and you can mix up Mexican food with American breakfast items. I love it! Their prices are really good and everything I have eaten there is really, really tasty. Really good Mexican food. Try the machaca (made better with a side of pancakes. Oh, and the generous breakfast burritos. Yum!) I have a friend who lives nearby and often I request that we go here. The staff is always wonderful and although the service is a little slow, it's worth waiting for. I have a tendency any way to have prolonged breakfasts or lunches with friends so I generally am not in a hurry anyway. You need to try this place.

Yelp
It's been several years since Joe K and I last visited Alonzo's. Not because we didn't want to return, but life has a way of keeping us too busy and broke to allow us to go to restaurants very often. In fact we kind of forgot about this place. But recently, we have been passing by it on a more frequent basis and each time we say we need to go back! Finally, on our weekly routine down Stockton Blvd. we decided to stop in for lunch. We were greeted and seated right away. The owner was very helpful in getting us quick service because Joe K had an upcoming oncologist appointment at UC Davis. The menu has all of the traditional and authentic Mexican dishes I remember from the past. A past which I talk about in my very first review. Anyway, back to our current visit. We started off with fresh guacamole with tortilla chips. I ordered the Chile Relleno lunch which included 1 Chile Relleno, spanish rice, refried beans and a small salad. I also had a diet coke which came in a very large glass! Joe ordered 2 shredded beef crispy tacos and a bowl of lentil soup. Our food was just as delicious as I remembered! Mrs. Alonzo stopped by our table to make sure everything was OK. I had to ask her about one of her stepdaughters whom I had gone to high school with and had the chance to briefly reminisce. Unfortunately, casual conversation had to be cut short before we needed to depart to our next destination. This new location and upgrades gives it a fresh new look and less old school like it once was. Joe and I agreed we will try to return more often! Maybe I'll be able to see my old friend once again!

Yelp
We have been coming to Alonzo's for a very long time. My favorite food is the cocido, it has lots of flavor, I add all the onions and lemon juice to it, it has all of my favorites vegetables, potatoes, zucchini, cabbage, carrots. It comes with a side order of rice. It is so good you will not be disappointed. My husband really likes the Chile verde but this time he ventured out and had the chicana plate which he really liked.
google avatar

Toby N.

Yelp
Alonzo's has been around since I was in HS so if I tell you my Age (40+) you can do the math! On a serious note, this place has remodeled since my last visit. It's a lot bigger now but the food is n has been consistently the same Delish. With this visit, we went with the traditional Mexican breakfast ( Cocido Soup with Spanish Rice & Pork Chile Verde w Flour or Corn Tortilla) I can't tell you how consistent the flavor was from years ago so there you go! They offer American breakfast dishes as well w pancakes, bacon, biscuits/gravy, omelettes, steaks, etc. But I come here for the Mexicana breakfast dishes. To each his/her own right... Hours are only for breakfast/lunch and well worth my 30 min drive Trust me n try it

Elin G.

Yelp
I had a week long craving for menudo and chose Alonzo's because Ive heard good things. Sadly, I was disappointed. I suspect the menudo was a few days old and reheated a few times. The broth was sort of bland, it didn't taste like the peppers used to make it. The tripe was also over cooked. They also served it with lemon, not lime. WTH? I gave it three stars because my friend said her food was fine. She ordered the chilaquiles.

CHRISTINA D.

Yelp
When you walk in you pretty much sit yourself. Everyone's pretty busy. The place is pretty packed. Great ambiance . got the posole large and Menudo large in both were very very good. The flavor was great Didn't get chips I ordered a ice tea. Not so great returned it Check your bill because I was still billed for it Otherwise everyone was very friendly Will go back
google avatar

Kel C.

Yelp
This place has gone so far downhill in just the last year alone. The prices increased but their customer service lacks. They charge 16+ for a pizzole (to-go), throw your condiments in a paper bag that doesn't even hold up for the 5 minute car ride home. I live less than a mile away. The food should've still been at least warm by the time I got home and it wasn't even that. If I wanted to cook/reheat my own breakfast I wouldn't have ordered food in the first place. I won't be returning.

D R.

Yelp
One of the bf's favs. This place is usually pretty busy. When you walk in, place your name on the list. The menu is at the table under the glass, which I feel is so smart. Everything we've had here is pretty good. We always get the pozole.
google avatar

Bien L.

Yelp
This is an old school restaurant. Good food and great staff. Been here for evers, and it's our go-to neighborhood spot. The reason i didn't give it 5 stars is a pet pev. They play oldies kinda loud. My wife loves it because she loves oldies but unfortunately Im not a big fan of them. Thats it so when I go there by myself I use ear phones to cut out the loud music. I enjoy reading but i need the ear phones to read its so loud. Other than that its a great place.
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
Terrible customer service. Waited 45 minutes for a group of 6 and was over looked multiple times.

Marisa K.

Yelp
The service was pretty awful. I waited for about 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged me to be seated. After a while another couple was seated across from me. The man was yelling and calling the woman a bitch (at 11 in the morning). Of course I looked up at him and he made eye contact with me and said, "yeah. I said it. Mind your business bitch." The wait staff went over to his table and asked them if they wanted drinks..... even though I'd been seated before them with no drink...and he was being an asshole cussing out his girlfriend and me.. a complete stranger. I was meeting someone, so I ignored them. I had pozole verde. It was okay. I probably won't come back.
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
On occasion we will eat at Alonzo's. It has been in our list of restaurants we will frequent if in the areas. The food is always top notcha and the service is okay to good. We waited about fifteen minutes this trip but cleaned our plates. I had the pork chicana and V had a side of Chile Relleno and a Carnitas taco. Everything was yummy and full of robust flavors. The Chicana was a pork stew-like dish loaded with chunks of pork. Again we will be back when in the hood. The new location is clean and very new feeling (good and okay)
google avatar

Lupita D.

Yelp
Been coming here for decades! Best menudo in town. We also love their friendly staff.
google avatar

Hai L.

Yelp
If you like Mexican cuisine, visit this restaurant. Perfectly cooked menudo, pozole, and carnitas have an appetizing taste. They are known to be a nice place with a calm atmosphere. Came here on and weekday morning and there was no wait. The staff was friendly but took forever to take orders, and the kitchen took forever to make it. Also took quite some time just to bring out waters and a Bloody Mary. Service could definitely improve but the food was amazing. I tried their Chile verde and the pork flavor really came through. Super delicious. The pork was really tender and slow cooked in a homemade sauce. Good chunks of meat and very tasty!

Marcus T.

Yelp
My wife and I went to Alonzo's and were very disappointed, we ordered our food and the waitress brought my order and by the time my wife got her order I was almost finished, we noticed that it was not only us it was everyone around us. My beans were slightly warm and my rice was cold, we are so disappointed. They are suppose to cook the food according to the table and the parties at that table should get their food at the same time, the waitress apologized, I would not recommend this place unless they changed this practice.
google avatar

Ariel D.

Yelp
Came here a few days ago and left with food poisoning. I was vomiting in my hand on my way home. After ordering the funky menudo I was convinced it was old or canned. Please if you are looking to enjoy menudo. Do not come here
google avatar

Alejandra R.

Yelp
It's sad to see what this place has become... I have been coming here for years with my grandparents and never had any issues... some workers that have been working here for a cool minute have become rude! Food has changed a lot... my grandparents ordered menudo and they specifically asked for no grano and the waiter said okay. When they received their menudo and it had grano. When we told the guy that brought it out he said it was already premade and tht they couldn't take out the grano. Why were we not informed about this when we ordered? They could have gotten something else instead.. I ordered a large albondiga soup and let me tell you this was more of a vegetable soup... not only was there barely any albondigas like 2-3.. but they were small... the vegetables in the soup were bigger than the meatballs... very disappointing...

Yelp
Bad service food was nasty I honestly wanted to walk out the waiter forgot half my food gave me a baby cup for water like wtf

Yelp
This one of THE best authentic Mexican restaurants in Sacramento. Huevos Rancho is off the hook, along with pork chile verda and the rest of the menu. Been coming to this restaurant for over 45 years and now at the new location it hasn't changed. If you are ever in south Sacramento come by and give it a try...

Sylvia Q.

Yelp
Great food. Best flour tortillas chips. Excellent service. Place looks great. **********+*+++++++++************ *************************++*++++

Yelp
Food was amazing but unfortunately one of the waiters was very snobby and seemed tired of her job.
google avatar

Karen F.

Yelp
The food and the waitress was okay. The problem came when the sign said they are hiring. My fiancé son needs a job. I asked the waitress, she said they were out of applications and just leave his number and "Ash-The manager" would call him. On Monday I told my fiancé son to call and just check in ~ Here is where the problem is. Ash was a COMPLETE JERK! He said "I don't care what you were told, you have to fill out an application! You can't fill out an application if you don't have any. Very VERY poorly managed. We will not return and I feel sorry for the people working for this type of manager!! This place won't last!! The food was mediocre at best. The best part was the waitress. She was nice!!

D R.

Yelp
Chicken burrito to go with chips and salsa. Yum! Enough said. If you haven't already give them a try!

Jacquelyn S.

Yelp
Service has worsen at this establishment since the owner passed. They cut their hours from 7:00 to 2:00 and if you're not in there by a certain time you cannot sit and eat your food but you can order to go This isn't the first time we've experienced this but it will be the last. Don't recommend it for anyone desires to dine in. We are not fans of eating in our car.
