Boston’s Most Anticipated Restaurant Openings of Spring 2024 | Eater Boston

"A new neighborhood-focused spot from the owners of Viale, taking over the former Dial space in Central Square and envisioned as a backyard-party-style restaurant with a smoker and heavy use of a large outdoor patio — casual, convivial, and designed for gatherings." - Erika Adams

Althea Review - Magnificent Mile - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Some things don’t look great on paper even if they actually are, like the nine-month gap in your employment history from when you were scrubbing oil-soaked wildlife. Althea, an expensive vegan restaurant in the men’s section of a department store, on its surface might seem unpromising at first, too. But this place has more upscale and interesting food than what you find at a lot of vegan restaurants, and that makes it worth your attention. So yes, Althea is inside Saks Fifth Avenue on Michigan Ave. And unless you have fond memories of family dinners at The Walnut Room, Althea’s location might be unappealing. It’s all the way up on the seventh floor, and depending on your seat you’ll either have a view of the Magnificent Mile or half-naked mannequins while you eat. Regardless, when the surprisingly attractive food arrives, you’ll forget you just walked by an underwear display next to the host stand. photo credit: Sandy Noto Althea’s menu is 100% vegan, and while it has some tasty dishes like kung pao cauliflower, you’ll want to focus on the more creative menu options. Like a delicious cacio e pepe made with kelp noodles in an intensely flavorful cashew sauce that’s way richer than any gluten-free raw dish has a right to be. The kimchi dumplings are also very good, with delicate wrappers made of dehydrated coconut that are chewy in an oddly satisfying, Fruit Roll-Up sort of way. And the spicy udon bowl is one of our favorite things here. It includes pieces of tempeh that add some funk and texture to a well-balanced sweet and spicy hoisin broth. But some dishes here are pretty boring and not very good. The flatbread pizza (topped with a macadamia ricotta and pesto) has a greasy and underbaked crust that’s terrible. The $14 avocado tikka is so simplistic that it feels both silly and expensive - it’s a plate of some sliced avocado on a spread of curried yogurt, with tough potato bread served on the side. And if you have questions about the menu, your server might not have answers. They’ll disappear for a while to ask the kitchen, but at least you can use the extra time to look at Hugo Boss shirts while you walk to the bathroom. Like an IUD, Althea doesn’t make sense for everyone. But if you need an upscale vegan restaurant that can accommodate a bunch of dietary restrictions, you’ll want to have Althea in your toolbox. This restaurant has creative plant-based food that will make you happy whether you’re vegan, gluten-free, or just in the market for a luxury bathrobe. Food Rundown photo credit: Sandy Noto Kimchi Dumplings This is a very pretty dish, and it tastes good, too. The thin dumpling wrappers are made of dehydrated coconut, and their chewy texture goes well with the cashew and kimchi filling. Spicy Udon This is a delicious bowl of noodle soup with tempeh that’s a little funky and does a great job of balancing out the sweet and spicy hoisin and cashew broth. photo credit: Sandy Noto Cacio E Pepe We love this. The kelp noodles are chewy, and the sauce is rich and peppery. It’s very satisfying, and even if you’re not vegan and/or keeping a raw diet, it’s disconcerting how fantastic it is. photo credit: Sandy Noto Plant Bowl This is what a vegan straight out of Central Casting might order. The bowl is filled with quinoa, lentils, roasted vegetables, kale, and served with lemon tahini - the whole thing is aggressively healthy, but good. photo credit: Sandy Noto Cheese Plate Obviously nothing on this plate is real cheese. It’s all flavored nut paste, which sounds terrible but isn’t. The three “cheeses” are a cashew-based truffle, macadamia chevre, and a harissa jack cheddar also made with cashew. Those are fine, but the issue here is that the order only comes with seven Wheat Thins-sized dehydrated flax crackers. There aren’t enough, they’re bland, and they just make us miss the flavor and texture of real Wheat Thins. Kung Pao Cauliflower At some point, fried cauliflower as a meat substitute started popping up everywhere, so it’s not surprising to see it here. The florets are nice and crispy and served with a sesame brittle that’s kind of interesting. If you really like fried cauliflower, order it. But we think you can do better while you’re here. Barbacoa Taco This is on the snack section of the menu, and it qualifies: it’s a single taco filled with mushrooms and topped with avocado puree and a pepita cream. It’s not very creative and not worth $5. Avocado Tikka Unless you’ve done your due diligence and looked at pictures ahead of time, this will probably disappoint you. It’s literally sliced avocado on a curried yogurt spread, served with some potato bread that’s just not very good. Basil Sunflower Pesto Flatbread Honestly, anything at Althea that involves bread should just be skipped, including this. It’s basically a pizza made with pesto sauce and topped with a macadamia ricotta, roasted tomatoes, and onions. The toppings are well-seasoned, but the flatbread is limp and underbaked and just not as much fun to chew as, say, Fruit Roll-Up dumpling wrappers. Mocha Layer Cake This isn’t so much a layer cake as it is several pieces of dense and fudgy chocolate. But as long as you realize that’s what you’ll be getting, it’s rich and not too sweet and a perfectly fine choice." - Adrian Kane

Amazing ambience at this place and our waiter (I forgot their name but worked on 7/27) was very hospitable. Some dishes were very good like the salmon crudo. My crab pasta was good but too salty and the special turkey hash was much more turkey than hash. The cocktails however were VERY delicious.

Totally feels like a date night! The interior is dimly lit, well-decorated and exudes a cozy atmosphere. We came in on a Sunday evening with no reservation but were seated immediately. My boyfriend loved the 60s music they were playing all evening. Ordered the Brussels sprouts which were super crispy and well-seasoned. Then we each got the brisket burgers! The burgers were tender and juicy but my only gripe is that the waiter didn’t ask us how we wanted our burgers. (Would have liked medium rare instead of medium) Overall, would come back for an easy, quiet and quick date night or just drinks with friends

Spectacular! I took some family from out of town here for their anniversary and they couldn’t stop raving about it! We sat inside & the decor was simple yet upscale and the outdoor seating area looked cool. We loved everything that came to the table. Healthy portions and reasonable prices. Can’t wait to go again.

TERRIBLE COCKTAIL (not that but like not worth). The service was OK but they are forgetful. They didn’t serve water nor remember a few things. I would say the bigger problem are the cooks, a lot of the food has too much oil and charge to the point that it was bitter for the fish, brussels sprouts, and asparagus. Although the dine out Boston meal option looks nice, I sadly didn’t have a good time eating there I would say the bigger scan is the cocktails, they are like 150 mL for $16, and they were not good, not made from real ingredients for a few of them. I got the strawberry daiquiri, and I also tried the orange blossom , which had a smoke flavor, but also bit artificial. More so, the presentation was disappointing

Updated review July 2025: I remembered liking the seafood at Althea, so came by for an impromptu late dinner on a Tuesday. Unfortunately, the food was quite disappointing. We were told that the special was a ceviche, but it turns out it was a cold tomato soup with fully cooked, tough shrimp and squid. The chips that came with it were nice and thin and crispy, but the "ceviche" was definitely not what we expected. 3/5 I really liked the grilled octopus last time, but this time it was very burnt, which made it quite unpleasant to eat. 2/5 The smoked chicken croquette was weird -- quite gluey and lacking in flavor. 1/5 The brussels sprouts were overly oily and were under seasoned. They were wanting for some acidity. 2/5 The smoked brisket was decent, though not particularly tender. It had the best balance of flavors amongst everything we tried (finally, some acidity!). 3/5 The grilled oysters were decent as well, though the beer seasoning was not as good as the chili oil last time. 4/5 Overall we were quite disappointed by the food this time. I was hoping to like it more than last time! Alas. Service and atmosphere are great, but we won't be coming back. Previous review (4 stars) I walked into Althea around 8pm on a weekday -- it doesn't seem too busy and they have a good amount of outdoor and indoor seating. We tried a few of the small plates and entrees. The standouts were the seafood items -- I wouldn't expect anything less from a Viale sister restaurant! The meat items were not as impressive. The grilled oysters ($12 for 3) were really delicious. The perfectly-cooked oyster, delicious chili crisp, and other savory sauces made for a perfect bite. It's not a bad price either, given that raw oysters go for $3-4 each these days. I'd definitely get it again. The grilled octopus ($18) was also excellent. Perfectly grilled/charred on the outside, tender inside, and paired very nicely with the sauce and the fresh brussels sprouts salad. I would come back to Althea just for the oysters and octopus. The pork ribs were $4 each so we got two. I didn't think these were very special -- not particularly tender, and served with a very standard barbecue sauce. We also got the barbecue plate ($28). The potato & greens salad was quite good and fresh, but the brisket was quite tough and the sauce was again just a standard barbecue. We also got the lobster pappardelle pasta ($25). There's a lot of lobster in this dish -- two claws and a whole tail -- and the lobster is decently cooked. The noodles were very wide and thin and bathe in the sauce. The sauce was a bit too sour for my taste, but overall it was a very rich dish and a decent deal. I enjoyed my first Althea experience and could see myself coming back for some evening small plates. I would probably stick with the seafood options in the future. Wishing them all the best!

I went to Althea twice in the last 3 weeks. The Smokey corn chowder is amazing. Also had the shrimp and grits which has a beautiful, slightly spicy and extremely flavorful sauce. On another visit we had the smoked chicken dish which is amazing and I had the warm beet salad. We also had the swordfish and beef brisket dishes and both were delicious!! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the specialty cocktails were great as was the service. One of the nights there was a band playing out on the back patio which was really fun. We’ll definately be back!

Everything we had was excellent. The dishes were creative, especially the salmon crudo with crispy quinoa and cucumber for crunch. The vegetable dishes - we had beets and potatoes - were well executed. We also had the s'mores dessert, which was amazing as well. Would definitely come back!

I really wanted to enjoy Althea more as a big fan of their sister restaurant Viale. Unfortunately despite not being busy at all. 1:30pm on a Saturday. The food was very dissapointing. I ordered the Tartar, the Pork Ribs and The Gravlax Benedict. Steak Tartar was a very generous portion but completely bland and greasy. It also tasted very strongly of raw onion. Overpoweringly so. I took a few bites but ultimately couldn't finish it. The Pork Ribs were very tough and chewy. Like tearing through jerky. Not exactly what one wants when eating ribs. The seasoning and sauce were really good though. Sweet, tangy, seasoned. I got most of the way through one but left the 2nd. The Salmon Benny was the best of the 3. The homefries were delicate, crispy and well seasoned. While the Hollaindaise itself was bland. The salmon itself was delicate and had a decent taste to it. The egg itself was poached perfectly. It wasnt the best Benedict ive ever had nor was it even close but it was serviceable. I'm sure ill be back at some point to try out their dinner service but its gonna be far down my list. Dont reccomend 4/10
