Yelp
4.5 stars overall. Altius is the Latin word for "higher," and it reflects the restaurant's physical location on Mount Washington and also a dedication to high standards for food and service.
I believe that Altius first opened in the year 2014. This restaurant serves contemporary American cuisine in an upscale environment (the dress code is business casual). Examples of current menu items are charcuterie, oysters, halibut, lamb, pork chop, salmon, caviar, and creme brulee. The restaurant also offers an extensive menu of wines and other beverages.
For several years, I have eaten meals off and on at Altius. Most recently, for my birthday this month, I made a reservation for two people for dinner. My reservation was for 5 PM, so I felt surprised when the restaurant texted me at 4:24 PM that my table was ready. My husband and I arrived early, and the host promptly seated us at a table that was not up against the windows but still provided a wonderful view of the city skyline below.
Soon, our waitress arrived. Throughout our meal, she spoke professionally to us, and she timed our courses perfectly.
Here are my reviews for my husband's and my foods:
Free appetizers - $0 - 5 stars - Our waitress gave us popcorn, tomato shooters, and focaccia for free. I enjoyed the freshness and flavors of all three.
Steak tartare - $17 - 5 stars - The beef was served with relish, egg yolk, aioli, baguette crostinis, and edible flowers.
Pork belly - $19 - 4.5 stars - The pork belly had a satisfying flavor of fat and salt. It was accompanied with slaw and peaches. My husband and I thought that the peaches overpowered the pork, so we preferred to eat them separately.
Filet mignon - $65 - 4.5 stars - This filet mignon was cooked medium as I had requested. On the side were truffled potato purée, carrots, and butter.
Ribeye - $80 - 4.5 stars - This ribeye was a large size, and it was cooked as my husband had requested. It was topped with mushrooms. He enjoyed the same sides of truffled potato purée and carrots.
Crab and scallion risotto - $12 - 4.5 stars - This risotto was cooked well. I tasted the scallions more than the crab.
Birthday dessert - $0 - 5 stars - For my birthday, the waitress brought me a free dessert that was chocolatey mousse inside a crispy crust. In addition, at the end of the meal, the waitress brought two free brownies that tasted very chocolatey.
Plum cake - $16 - 4 stars - I seldomly eat plums for dessert, so I felt compelled to order this plum cake. Cake was topped with mascarpone frosting, plum gelee, edible flowers, and large chunks of plums.
Strawberry-pretzel cake - $16 - 4 stars - Cake was topped with cream-cheese mousse, strawberry gelee, strawberry cremeux, strawberries, and edible flowers. The pretzels seemed to be baked for a bit too long.
For our beverages, we drank sparkling water ($3 each) and a glass of riesling ($14).
Our total bill for two people was $245 *plus* tax and tip.
