How to Spend a Food-Filled Weekend in California’s Mount Shasta | Eater SF

"Marketing itself as "the home of healthy habits," this spot focuses on acai bowls, smoothies, kombucha, and avocado toast—easy fuel for nearby trails. Kombucha is available on tap and to-go in quart, half-gallon, and gallon containers; recent flavors included hibiscus-ginger and turmeric orange cinnamon. The Sasquatch’s Stash bowl piles strawberries, blueberries, banana, granola, almonds, peanuts, and cacao nibs atop acai. Vegan and gluten-free options are also offered." - Dianne de Guzman

Just yes. This amazing gem has stolen my heart. The coffee is perfect, I had an Americana and then went back for the espresso. They serve a double shot because one goes down too fast. The açaí bowl is perfect, a frozen fruit slurry topped with all the texture you would want, like, and need. Not too sweet and it satiated me after being in the woods for a couple days. Spent a couple hours here working, the music is on point and the ability to observe the staff while working a Sunday international rush in the summertime was impressive. I 100% prefer this over a similar cafe situation down the road. Both delicious, but this place is special. 💕

Google
I wanted a healthy reataurant in Mt. Shasta and this was perfect. The best avocado toast you'll ever have. Mine came with a sliced egg and microgreens. Delicious 12 oz. Fresh raw juices, all sorts of flavors. Most wete ordering their acai bowls, but plenty of nice options here. Live music was playing in the dining room area, though i sat at the counter outside.

Google
Delicious, healthy food, and cute space. Good vegan options (non-dairy milks, tempeh protein, etc). It would have been nice if they offered a plant-based protein powder for the smoothies (they only had whey), but overall I recommend it. The front-house staff were friendly, but something went awry in the kitchen with our order and we ended up waiting a very long time.

Google
I’ve tried this place twice! Yesterday, I had the turkey bagel and green smoothie—the smoothie was really tasty. Today, I went with the mango dragonfruit smoothie, and it was also delicious. The place could definitely be cleaner—it was a bit sticky—but the staff was really friendly and welcoming

Google
Was on a roadtrip, needed some avocado toast, and let me tell you this place delivered. Some of the best avocado toast I’ve ever had! Hard boiled eggs on top!? I would have never thought of that and it was amazing.

Google
Oh, the yum! Too many amazing choices for just one visit…gonna come back! Tons of options and easy to customize for every taste and preference. Great healthy alternatives to ice cream, and generous serving sizes. Delicious, nutritious, and lots to love!

Google
We visited Mt Shasta as a yoga retreat- party of ten. And Thrive was big support! They prepared our lunches packed for picnic early in the morning. They helped each of us with lunch choices on another day - special orders all the way around were met with a smile. The setting is fabulous for sitting at the outdoor counter with the fresh air and mountain views. Charming. And the food was fresh and fantastic - really, outstanding. Thanks so much!

Google
Great vegan options! Friendly staff and the kombucha is awesome. The place could be a little cleaner but definitely recommend eating here.

Yelp
Healthy | popular spot I'm a big fan of this place. My family and I were on a roadtrip back home. We stopped here to grab some food before continuing on our journey, and I'm so glad we did because it's better than the junk food drive thrus on the road. Excellent menu variety. Smoothies are $9! I've been to many other places where smoothies are anywhere from $12-$17. Clean and healthy ingredients. We got three smoothies and two bowls ($17). For the bowls, I chose white rice with marinated tempeh, the #1 combo: kale, broccoli, mushroom and lemon tahini sauce. They pack their bowls with the ingredients!! You are definitely full after eating this. I recommend the marinated tempeh with these. Service is great! They're very friendly. Because this spot is very popular, you may find yourself waiting a little bit for your order. It's worth it though. Fresh food. Ambiance is like a nice cozy coffee shop feel. They have artists come to perform sometimes too. Great view of Mt Shasta. Parking is available on the street. We will be back every time we're on the road.

Yelp
The best part of this experience was the portion size, which was generous and well-balanced. The food itself was high quality, and we appreciated that. But nearly everything else about the visit was frustrating and disorganized. We waited a long time just to place our to-go order, and then again for it to be ready. When it was finally done, the bag had been sitting on the counter with no name and no announcement. We stood there for several minutes while staff walked past us without acknowledging it or checking in. Several menu items were unavailable, so we had to customize and add things just to piece together a complete order. That ended up pushing our total to $86 for three people--and we didn't even order full meals. The receipt included $9 smoothies, a $3 egg add-on, a $4 shrimp charge, and $14 for chips and salsa. We paid fine dining prices for a counter-service to-go experience with limited options and slow service. It came across as a bit of a rip-off. The atmosphere was hectic, and the staff seemed overwhelmed and unable to multitask. The only real highlight was a blond staff member with blue eyes who had a kind demeanor and great communication. He's the only reason this isn't a one-star review.

Yelp
The smoothie was tasty and the service brought me back to a time of real, human charm! Lots of seating, good decor, friendly baristas, chefs, and customers. Charming spot with great options for all palates! Highly recommend

Yelp
Wonderful place. Sooooo many great choices, you want to keep coming back to try them all. I had their Golden Mylk and it was delicious
google avatar

Yelp
An interesting place with a wide variety of items on offer. We had smoothies. They were very good. It did take a very long time for them to come up. The ambiance is cool and reflective of the more woo woo side of Shasta.

Mary D.

Yelp
Healthy delicious food at reasonable prices! Great acai bowls, and I'll definitely be going back every time I'm in Shasta. Go when you have time to enjoy it, as it can take awhile to get your food, but it's worth the wait.
google avatar

Abubu A.

Yelp
Ambiance is very laid back and casual. Outdoor and indoor seating and service was very friendly. Just got a smoothie but it was very good and loved how organic all ingredients were at a fair price. Highly recommended!!

Yelp
Sharas little gem. Staff is nice, food is healthy and great. Still a little hot inside, but it was the first week of July. Such a fun little corner and all the fun flavors to try.

Mary L.

Yelp
I would love to love this place... they have great offerings but all of that is completely overshadowed by the poor attitudes and demeanor of the employees, in addition to extremely slow and disorganized service standards. Sad but I don't feel comfortable eating things made by people who appear absolutely miserable :-/

Yelp
This place is an incredible spot with the healthiest menu humanly possible. As a vegetarian I really appreciate all the food variety. I ordered a salad, a juice, an açaí bowl and a coffee. These were all made with love and the food was brought out quickly by the nicest staff. I adore the feel of the cafe which is covered in gorgeous murals and a view of the epic mount shasta. Do yourself a favor and stop in here for the recharge.

Yelp
So happy to have stumbled upon Thrive while walking through Mt Shasta. Great place for unique and healthy food. We tried the mushroom coffee, hot shots, açaí, and avocado toast. All were delish!
google avatar

Yelp
Food amazing Service kind and happy! The food speaks to the ambiance. Have eaten here twice and today marks the third:) We travel through this area every year and make sure this is one of destination

Yelp
YUM! Stopped in on our way north...not expecting anything amazing in a small mountain town in winter. Baby had the Avodaco Tango Toast and I had a bowl with spiced cabbage, broccoli, chicken and Thai peanut sauce. Effed up good! Baby loved his Chai ("it just pops with flavor"). Friendly service... Cute signs in the washroom. Funny and unexpected.

Yelp
My family and I were craving something refreshing after hiking around Mt Shasta, and Alua's Thrive Bar was clutch. I ordered the probiotic smoothie with lots of various fruit, coconut milk, and oat milk. I loved the burst of mango! I paid $9 for my smoothie which is a bit on the pricey side but I love supporting local healthy businesses! Great spot. Friendly service, easy parking, and tons of space.

Jessie B.

Yelp
Located a block off the main street, Alua's is easy to get to from anywhere in town. They have plenty of seatinginside as well as a covered patio out front. Last time we grabbed coffee and walked over to Sisson Meadow to enjoy the view. They are known for their kombucha, but I get a delicious mocha latte and my daughter prefers a chocolate protein smoothie. Their avocado toast is really good as well, the bread is always nice and crispy.
google avatar

Carmen N.

Yelp
Came in from out of town, to be specific Laguna beach, and Aluas juices and on tap kambucha taste SO much better than anything I have ever tried. I ordered the Chilli and avocado toast, hands down the best I have ever tried. None of the Laguna beach stands have anything to compete against them. The freshest pressed juice I've ever had, the flavor.. no words can explain how fresh and sweet it was.

Yelp
This is a sweet local business that's very engaged in our community and has pretty good coffee and healthy food. We don't have many healthy options in our town because every new restaurant just serves burgers and beer, so its really nice to have a place concerned with quality ingredients and is safe for folks with dietary restrictions. Thank you for being an upstanding place with very friendly service. -1 star because I don't care for the Laird (sp?) products, of which they have many.
google avatar

Lo R.

Yelp
Yelp note. This business deleted their earlier public comment, the tone and bullying nature in the second public comment is here to read (as of now). This is hardly a place one wants to engage with, regretful experience indeed.
google avatar

Yelp
Staff couldn't even acknowledge us after standing there for 10 minutes. I was excited to try their kombucha but guess it wasn't meant to be.

Yelp
What a gem in the little town of Mt Shasta! I drive through this area often, and sometimes hike in the surrounding wildernesses. I used to always go to Berryvale, but their closed cafe is a major disappointment, still. So I needed to find a new place, and Alua's is IT!! Don't miss this; stop! I can in after an early morning hike and ordered a green smoothie, delicious and hit the spot. I grabbed a Thai peanut wrap (vegan, with tempeh) to go. I enjoyed that wrap immensely at the top of Black Butte...it was so fresh and good! The included sauce was excellent. When I got back into town I wanted a snack or light meal before driving the hour and a half home. Regular restaurant fare was just too much (it was pretty early, 4:00), so I decided I swing back by Alua's, maybe for an açaí bowl. Then I saw that they have savory bowls, so I ordered the chicken teriyaki. The chicken teriyaki bowl is delicious! The sauce is the perfect amount, sweet enough without being overpowering. The veggies were perfectly steamed, bright in color and still crisp. I really enjoyed it. The portion is generous, perfect for a meal, but since it was early, I took most of the teriyaki rice under the toppings home. My teen was thrilled when I gave her that, lol, and it disappeared quickly. Pricing is fair; nothing is cheap these days, but Alua's is average and a decent deal for the quality you receive. The wrap I bought was $10; my brother bought a wrap at Berryvale for $11. Service was friendly and swift both times I went in. Highly recommend, and I hope they're around for a very long time. Yay for a new spot to stop!!

Yelp
Chill modernist atmosphere. Excellent Kombucha. Pretty waitresses. Excellent selection of coffee drinks. What's not to appreciate?

Yelp
Delicious salads and more!!! Coffees. , kombucha's, avacado meals, Soups, great little place to have a healthy meal inside and outside dining

Yelp
First time here and I thought it was just alright. The menu is nice and straight forward. We tried the Açaí Berry once which was decent. Good flavor and texture. We ordered the Mango Dragon which was too watery and didn't have much flavor. The best one was the Mushroom Peanut Butter one (forgot the name) and the super green one just tasted like a Matcha Latte from Starbucks? I would definitely love to come back and try different things because the staff was very kind and friendly too. But the cost of the smoothies weren't worth it for the ones that were watery and didn't taste right. I have a feeling the food could be good. I really liked the feel of the place because the walls were covered in fun art and the space was very inviting.

Kayla E.

Yelp
When I say I want to go out and have a big salad, this is what I'm talkin about! The salad was huge and so flavorful. Loved the mint, mango, greens -- and juicy chicken. The kombucha was also super tasty -- mellow and gut healthy and not too sweet. Highly recommend this spot!

Yelp
This place is the best place I've ever seen the hotchoclate is the best.the view is amazing and I love snowboarding there

Yelp
Love love this place. The gals are always very nice and helpful. Been in Mt Shasta 47 years and this is a great addition to the town.

JENNIFER R.

Yelp
Great food, great service, and great menu! Super friendly and accommodating staff. We will back when traveling through.

Jacqueline c.

Yelp
Customer service was great. I got a avalanche açaí bowl and this was unfortunately the blandest açaí i've ever had. It honestly didn't have much of a taste. The toppings like the banana and strawberries were good. Although i did find it weird that i was given a packet of honey instead of them putting it inside the bowl. It was just underwhelming for the price paid, but unfortunately i feel thats the norm here in mt shasta. Since theres a lot of tourism people jack up the prices for okay quality just because they can, which is unfortunate for the locals. Although i only had one item here so my opinion on this plate is limited, maybe if they didn't water down the açaí it would be better
google avatar

Yelp
As a new vegan I find it challenging to eat out. Thrive Bar was such a relief. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. I chose the mushroom mocha. It was a nice blend of chocolate and earthyness. I followed my drink with a Sasquatch bowl. I honestly couldn't believe the explosion of flavors. Açaí, granola, almonds, bananas, strawberries, chocolate chips. The place very casual and seemed to be a local favorite.
google avatar

Alisa J.

Yelp
First time at Thrive Bar. The space is really cool and staff is friendly. I gave 4 stars because my food was not good. I ordered the teriyaki bowl and it was so drenched in sauce, It overpowered the actual food and was hard to eat. I'll try again and if I get a bowl, order the sauce on the side!

Miranda W.

Yelp
The gluten free food, coffee and service were all incredible! That mushroom mocha coffee with the 7 mushroom blend was exceptional!

Sumedha J.

Yelp
Kombucha is good. Smoothie taste did not meet my expectations. I wish they used dates for more sweetness. However hiking and eating here feels great. It's a nice spot with clean bathrooms and good outdoor space. The view is beautiful. Customer service was excellent, lady took her time explaining each menu item even tho there was a huge line behind us. Really appreciated that and I came back for more. Healthy food! I recommend the bagels they're much bigger than the avacado toast. But avacado toast is great as an appetizer.

Sultani T.

Yelp
Run by a great couple who care about the local Community and offering something more healthy. I never cared for kombucha until they offered me some samples of their kombucha at a farmer's market. I am a twice a week regular now and have been since before they opened the Thrive Bar. I love the atmosphere of the Thrive Bar. You can see the work and care that went into creating the space. On a nice day, you can sit outside which I love. The coffee is to die for. Possibly the best in town (and we have some good coffee spots - and I'm not talking Starbucks-I mean really?!). Food is fresh and delicious and a great alternative to the burger, sandwich, pizza centric faire so common in town. And I've always gotten excellent and polite service, even when they are slammed. I appreciate the healthy alternative they offer and the care that they show their customers and the community.

Kenneth J.

Yelp
I am not at all into health food, vegan food or anything like that. Normally. I tried the blackberry kombucha. Very refreshing. I also ordered the vegan blast, which featured tempeh. I had never tried tempeh before, abd was very pleasantly surprised. Delicious. The bagel bread was awesome and wholesome. Highly recommend this place to anyone

Catherine M.

Yelp
It was very expensive, and it was quite a long wait for my food, but the vegan bowl I had was very tasty and the staff was very friendly
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
The food here was so delicious and healthy. The view of Mount Shasta from the restaurant is beautiful. Service was a bit slow because of a rush but overall great staff.

Herbert Allan M.

Yelp
I had a great breakfast this morning at Alua's Thrive Bar!! It's be developed by a local couple and is the place for a quiet health meal or snack! Great local coffee from Northbound Coffee here in Mount Shasta. OH! Alua's makes the best Kombucha within 100 miles !!

Yelp
After quite a few decent experiences here, I had such a horrible one that it canceled all previous visits out. This place sells "growlers" for their kombucha and other drinks, and I came in once to fill one. A local and a regular since they opened. They refused to rinse out the growler for me, telling me I am supposed to clean it at home. It wasn't gross... just the slightly sticky remnants of the last fill maybe a day or so old. They wouldn't even run water into the growler and pour it out, telling me I could either buy a new growler or have my kombucha poured into the old one as is. !?!? The owner comes out and doubles down on this, refusing the simple courtesy of rinsing a pricey growler they had sold me at a clear premium. In shock, I told them there was a 3rd option... that I leave and never give them my money again for their overpriced, mediocre fizzy water. As for ambiance, the place is alarmingly bad. The blue paint and hipster vibe is fine, but the place had NO air conditioning and an outmatched fan does nothing to alleviate the sweltering atmosphere. All summer long, the poor girls behind the counter are sweaty and I have seen them drip into the drinks. In the winter it is colder than a fridge. There is a reason the clientele is mostly tourists passing through. Food is decent but portions are small, overpriced, and with the hygiene on display... very suspect. TO OWNER'S REPLY: Wow. What is that, FIVE edits of your "reply" in as many days? Sad. Dude, your protest monologue just makes it clear that you are unprofessional. Calling me a liar doesn't make it so. Stating that it was never sweltering in your concrete brick house doesn't erase everyone's memories. This is the only "review" I have ever posted about you, so if you are getting bad reviews "all over the internet" it is probably because you are not a nice person and lack the very aloha spirit you try and ride on? YOU were rude to me, and to others I know in town. You reply to every review that isn't 5 stars here pushing people to rate higher, which is needy and neurotic. It is a small town and you should be nicer to your local customers. I wasn't told to leave, I walked out and will never come back due to YOU and your gruff ways. Your "rebuttal" alone shows how defensive and unprofessional you are. (Seems you finally wised up and erased 95% of your reply... but that doesn't change the hostile, neurotic vibe you were putting down, so I won't bother to change what I have written.) You say that the events never happened, and then go on to admit it is "your policy," and then make it as if the customers are at fault for violating your self-made policy that no brewery ever in the history of breweries would impose. Maybe it was your manager who was so rude... but you still hired him. If you "lose money" on your growlers... you are a terrible businessman and don't know how to use the internet. LOL. You can buy them on Amazon for $2. Acting like YELP isn't here to warn people about businesses that they should perhaps avoid or high-strung individuals like yourself who want to whine about a bad review and call names at someone who had previously given them a good chunk of change, means you don't understand how the service industry works. How about being polite, and trying to make the customer happy? Just a thought. Would it have killed you guys to run some water in the growler and not tried to embarrass me throwing your petty tyrant weight around? Yelp is not your free advertising domain. It is for CUSTOMERS to complain about businesses free from owners spending $ to inflate their ratings. You want undeserved ratings, give your money to Google. Gaming this system by having all your friends post favorable reviews is too pathetic for words. This one review didn't dent your numbers at all and you freak out trying to intimidate a genuine disgruntled customer from doing what YELP was designed to be used for... yelping about bad service! Everyone in town knows your place has been hotter than a henhouse. 2 of my girlfriends worked for you and quit due to conditions. Maybe this summer you will have better AC... who knows? Last summer you didn't. LOL. That you would even deny it is silly. Maybe you have purchased a better AC unit since last summer, but I wouldn't know because I will never patronize your venue again. I remember when you were just a small stand on the farmer's market and I was a loyal customer despite the fact that many of us make our own Jun and Kombucha here. Your demeanor and attitude about something as simple as giving a growler a quick rinse is on you. Whining about someone posting a bad review is petty. This is quite literally what Yelp was created for. Suggesting I am a competitor? You have no competitors. You are the only Kombucha Brewery in town... LOL. As if Handsome John gave a crap about your clientele. Thanks for the laughs.

Yelp
Door. Smiling. I drank smoothies and ate food there for years as a customer. I love the food and smoothies and coffee and juices. I worked there for 3 months. I love Nion's positivity and the vulnerability he shared with me when I first started working there. I love Nion's care for the staff in giving everyone Shift Meals and discounts and staff appreciation days and the best wages that he can selflessly afford so all the staff can Thrive. I love Nion's protection of the Gluten Free community. I love Nion's belief in the cook Jeremy knowing how to do everything in the kitchen with the recipes. I love that Nion and Rebecca work well together. I love when Nion uses a safe and respectful sense of humor. I love that Nion takes in feedback from customers and staff and is changed by it and integrates it and grows from it and improves the mediocrity into bigger Thriving. I love that Nion loves Buddha, one of my 24 Sat Gurus. I love that Nion Self reflects and looks at how to, as an owner and boss, shift from mediocrity to Thriving and that he works on being better and more relaxed every day. I love that Jeremy plays reggae in the kitchen to put good vibes in the food. I love when Jeremy smiles and has fun cooking. I love that Jeremy works on his anger and makes amends to people. I love when Neb plays spiritual music in the Kitchen. I love that Neb is super easy going and sweet. I love that Bianca is the Divine Mother and is full of Indigenous Wisdom and compassion for Mother Earth and Her people. I love that Rebecca is the Divine Mother and super fun and easy to work with. I love that Ashah is the Divine Mother and is super funny and nurturing and compassionate and caring. I love that Christina is the Divine Mother and is so focused on God and Jesus. I love that Jasmine is the Divine Mother and is super fun to work with and hilarious and has a huge smile. I love that Shauna is the Divine Mother and is so focused on doing a great job. I love that Aliyah is the Divine Mother and is super easy going and a pleasure to work with. I love that Gage is so focused on his work and also is really good at making Jasmine laugh. I love that Michael is super funny and super easy going and easy to work with. I love that Jeremy pays attention to detail and cares about health codes so much. I love that Nion, Neb, and Michael care about health codes so much but are very easy going and laid back about the cleaning. I love that Nion and Jeremy, since I have known them, are more and more careful about what they think, what they say, and what they let a Higher Power do through them, in order to protect the reputation and viability of the Thrive restaurant. I love that Nion and Jeremy are Self honest about their impact on the rest of the staff and continually improve their style and ways of being. I love that the Infinite Universe and each person's Higher Power, works through each member of the Thrive staff to "do" everything rather than people thinking, "I am the doer" which is egoism. I love that there are Thrive staff members working on the path of sobriety. I love that Shree Hari was a Avadhuta monk for 12 years before he became a customer and cook at Thrive. I love that Shree Hari did his best to be positive and walked through many doors smiling and showed how doors of connection could be opened between hearts through smiling. I love that Shree Hari has moved onto further career interests to further Thrive and transcend mediocrity. I love the Thrive family and I wish both customers and staff lots of freedom from fear, mental balance, holistic health, physical well being, and the most sweet soft gentle loving kindness manifesting throughout their lives beyond their wildest dreams, concepts, and fixed ideas. May each person's Higher Power bless them with infinite compassionate grace. I look forward to the possibility of having a www.empathycircle.com with Nion and Jeremy after November 6th, 2024 to deepen our brotherly love positive vibration connection. I love you all. Door. Smiling. Changed my review from 1 star to 5 stars. Door. Smiling.

Yelp
Great business in this small mountain town! Can't say enough about the fresh ingredients Alua uses. Love grabbing a smoothie in the AM to get my day started off on the right foot. Enjoy the patio with your furry friends in the summertime!
google avatar

Ali C.

Yelp
It's a nice organic casual place. The sandwiches and smoothies are good but it appears that they are short of staff and their staff members look really pressed. The fruit smoothie was fresh and delicious making us want to return for more. The kombucha was definitely watery and a bit of a disappointment. Nice little place in town
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
Healthy options! Nice staff and FAST!! Really enjoyed everything here! 5 stars because it is exactly what it advertised and more. Please keep places like this in business, it's hard to travel with dietary restrictions without places like this along the way! Thank you for the nourishment!

Yelp
I have been trying this awesome place for the last month! Love it! The Açaí bowls love them all. Totally love the smoothies delicious and nutritious. Turkey bagel is so delicious and feels great to devour it. I'm a fan of this place for surewho would have thought hamburger boy is getting schooled up by Hippy Food

Joshua A.

Yelp
Very slow during rushes. Best clean food in Mt Shasta if you have patience of a monk.
google avatar

Yelp
Hidden jewel. Friendly service really good food and kombuchas. Hard to find. Take the exit to the big bear diner pass it an Starbucks. Turn left at 1st after Main drag. It's the left

Yelp
Shocked again by amazing food in this small town! The avocado toast and the bagels were incredible...and smoothies are so good.

Yelp
I'm disappointed by the owner's response to my initial review. 4 stars is a good score and I had many complimentary things to say about my experience. I understand it's disappointing to not get a perfect score but my experience did not deserve 5 stars. Customer service and acting professional are a vital part of running a successful business - I highly encourage the owner to handle constructive feedback with more grace in the future.

Susan H.

Yelp
I absolutely recommend this place. It's got fabulous food and great community service are great. Can't expect more.

Jen M.

Yelp
We absolutely love this restaurant! I first had their kombucha at a farmer's market while visiting a friend in Mt Shasta, and every time we are in the area (we live 4.5 hours away) we make sure to stop by and fill up our empty glass containers and have a healthy and delicious meal! We even make sure we plan our annual road trip to be able to eat here! They have the best vegetarian food and great options for our whole family. I really wish they had more locations :)
