A Roving Food Critic’s Favorite Restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater

"A tiny Moroccan market-and-eatery run by its proprietor, who prepares homey, aromatic dishes amid a retail of clothing and sweets; highlights include an excellent bastilla made with shredded chicken in lieu of pigeon and a poetic lamb tagine, offering an intimate, authentic North African counterpoint to the regional repertoire." - Bill Addison

Google
Wow!!!Absolutely wonderful meal. I have never had Baba ganouch that had such depth of flavor. You can tell the dishes are hand made. No Sysco hummus here. Don’t be intimidated by the out of the way location or the security fence out front. The owner, Zhoa does the cooking and she is incredibly talented. More food than we needed. Huge, delicious, dimensional dishes. So much flavor.

Google
This Moroccan gem is amazing. We had their Hariri soup and the lamb couscous. We also had their mango juice. The food was amazing. Very highly recommend. I can see why it was voted the best restaurant in 2023

Google
One of the few places to get authentic Moroccan food. I was recommended coming here by a friend who just ate and raved about it. The outside is unassuming, but the food is the real treasure. There’s a little store inside to get little items and even authentic Moroccan outfits for ladies inside.

Google
Enjoyed this place so much! Doesn’t look like much from the outside or even when you come in, but a very nice atmosphere, service and sense hospitality, and no less important, amazing food! Very decent Falafels, and Cuscus to die for. I took the chicken Cuscus and the chicken was literally melting in my mouth. Perfect texture. So were the vegetables, and the whole thing was deliciously flavored/spiced. I ate too much so I skipped dessert, but I have every intention of going back there and trying their Knafe. Can’t wait to visit again!

Google
Friends who had met during a trip to Morocco were having a reunion in Tempe and wanted to eat real Moroccan food. We were not disappointed. The food was great and presented beautifully.

For being a single person ran business I give this place A+ food was amazing! Service was like being at mamas house. I’ll be back.

Google
Absolutely incredible food. Everything we tried - nearly everything on the menu - was excellent. Small number of helpful staff taking orders and cooking, but not a problem if you’re not in a hurry. 10/10 would recommend.

Google
Best Moroccan Food in America by far!♥️ Ideal for a romantic dinner or catching up over a pot of sweet Moroccan mint tea. Moroccan architecture seating of course! Chicken bastilla is to die for. And if you’re torn between tagine or couscous 🤤 the good thing is you won’t be disappointed by either, and let's not mention organic homemade Moroccan bread.

Yelp
Excellent food and worth the wait. We walked in for dinner and it is a 2 person show so the service is slow. But if you are willing to wait the food is amazing. We ordered the chicken couscous, bastilla, and the lamb tagine. They were so flavorful and had a great presentation. We also ordered the Moroccan tea which was very complementary to the dinner. They were very friendly and created an ambiance that made you feel like you were in Morocco.

Yelp
Authentic Moroccan cuisine. Our experience here was all top notch. We ordered Grape Leaves. Stuffed to perfection. The best I've ever had! The flavor was perfect! Chefs kiss Our main course was Lamb Tagine and Goat Tagine. Both were perfectly stewed to perfection. It came with Brussel sprouts, green beans, potatoes, and carrots in a tasty broth. The rice was so fluffy. Service was attentive. Plenty of parking Woman owned. The best dining experience.

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing. We came here yesterday to celebrate my birthday, and it just brought me all the way back to soft evenings in Marrakesh. Now, fair warning- I think this place is pretty much a one-person show, I've only ever seen one lady working here. That being said, you gotta respect the hustle- she'll be whirling around the place handling store customers, phone calls, balancing drinks and tagines, etc. Service might be a little slow, and if there are multiple tables I could imagine it being *quite* slow (though, honestly, and I hate to say this, I don't think I've ever seen anyone else eating here, which is a damned shame). But take that time to relax- browse around the store, enjoy some tea, get off your phone and chat with your friends. Their food is honestly some of the best that I've ever had. I mentioned it in my last review, but I want to reiterate- their bastilla is easily as good as anything I've ever had in Marrakesh or Fez. Yesterday we got some of just about everything, and it was all absolutely amazing. Even the presentation was memorable- the meals were served on beautiful wooden dishes, dazzling tagines and pretty little plates. Once again the meats all melted right in my mouth, and when I say that, I mean it literally. You scoop a piece of lamb up, you put it in your mouth, and you honestly don't even need to chew it- it just dissolves in a fatty, meaty alchemy. It looks like their menu has shrunk a little bit, but I'm just glad that they made it through COVID. I will personally commit to coming here more often to keep their kitchen busy. This place should be a UNESCO world heritage site, by golly.

Yelp
We had a lovely meal here - I would order all of the things I ordered again. Our party of 3 ate family style. We had 2 appetizers, Baba Ghanouj either pita and Stuffed Grape Leaves. My favorite was the Baba Ghanouj. For entrees, we shared 3 entrees: the Mixed Grill, Mandi, and Goat Tagine. We liked all 3 dishes. But my companions liked the Goat Tagine best. I couldn't decide between the Mandi or the Mixed Grill as my favorite. Beautiful presentation of all dishes. I would definitely return.

Yelp
I won't hesitate to say this place has the best grape leaf I've ever had. My entrée was the goat tagine, and it was amazing. Moroccan tea along with a mango smoothie. This place is a must-visit if you love Moroccan cuisine. The owner is super amazing, which made the experience epic.

Yelp
The Bastilla... what can I say about this unique dish? This restaurant is marketed as a Moroccan restaurant with an attached market. This seemingly unimposing restaurant boasts a hidden gem. That gem is the Bastilla! Looking at the dish and reading about, I initially thought "meh, seems interesting but I'm not expecting much." Boy was I wrong. This does require suspending what you would initially think as what flavor profiles to be. What do I mean? When one thinks of entree, you think of savory and sweetness belongs to dessert realm. This combines both to create a savory sweet dish that bursts of flavor. It tastes similar to a baklava with its sweet and almond style flavor, but the tenderness and savory profile of chicken. A sweet chicken dish? Who would've thought? Why am I asking rhetorical questions? I was impressed with this massive beast (it is HUGE) and I felt like the food baby was kicking once I was done. That being said I decided to try the mango smoothie. Also killed it in the smoothie game. It tasted like real fruit (it's sad to be impressed that a smoothie tastes like tea fruit since many places use a powder or some substitute)! It also had great presentation. No doubt this is an awesome gem that anyone with and adventurous appetite for non traditional food!

Yelp
Alzohour market is definitely a hidden gem!! A lovely spot with insanely delicious Moroccan food that I even think is better than Marrakesh, Morocco which I've been to 3 times! The flavor is excellent and portion sizes are huge! I highly recommend paying this spot a visit, the owner is very friendly and you will not be disappointed!!

John M.

Yelp
My five star rating is really focused on the incredible food and presentation. My husband and I had the lamb kabobs and it was so tender and flavorful; we have never had any like it before and loved it! It came out on wood slabs with grilled vegetables, rice, salad and pita. We will be back and will bring others! It wasn't the fastest service but it was worth the wait. Also, the owner was very friendly and accommodating with our baby.

Bridget B.

Yelp
Delicious. Well spiced/seasoned. Lettuce was pretty sad though. The market looks pretty much like an abandoned afterthought but the food was sooooo good.
google avatar

Adam P.

Yelp
Definitely a hidden gen. The tagine is mouth watering and the hummus is excellent. We got the bastilla and liked that one too but the tagine is the obvious winner

Yelp
First time here. If you are looking for a real Middle Eastern food (Morocco), this is a place. Food is is amazing amazing, amazing, and better than the Persian Room. I had the bastella. It's chicken and almond in a homemade filo. They fill your plate with food. So yummy!

Yelp
Food: everything was so amazing! The bastilla was my favorite and the mint tea!! So tasty I also really like the harrira was amazing too Service: amazing service by the owner and amazing chef The market and store: the store had so much beautiful clothing and jewelry and a lot of Muslim items too. The market had a lot of interesting food I would have loved to try but it was mostly expired- I would buy from there if they had fresh items Parking: plenty of it Amazing experience and I will definitely be back and refer a lot of friends

Yelp
Food quality is 4-5 stars, service/consistency/transparency is what makes this a one star. My family and I had gone to Alzohour a few times. I have no idea if the owner has staff, but both times it was literally just her to man the entire restaurant/store and answer enquires about the attached tailor/clothing store. So you'll have to be patient. Also, if you are going for lunch, she basically has to cook from scratch, so expect it to take 20 minutes or so for you to get your food. The food itself is delicious. We've had the tagine, the mandi is delightful, the bastilla is more of a sweet protein dish so isn't for everyone. The kunafa is amazing and homemade (it's a dish that tastes a bit like baklava but with homemade cheese). But the problem is inconsistency and transparency. A restaurant needs to be consistent in order to qualify as a successful restaurant, and this place feels more like a friend cooking in her kitchen, for better and worse. The transparency is why I'm writing this in a rage. The owner does NOT give you the check before paying. In order to pay, you get up from your table and go to the cash register in the front of the restaraunt. There, she rings in your bill but doesn't give you any idea what it is. Normal restaraunts give you the bill to see BEFORE running your credit card. The last time we went (and using Yelp's current prices for this restaraunt), my family got: 1 kashkbademjan ($11), 1 baba ghanouj ($9), 4 morrocan teas (yelp doesn't have this price so working off an older menu pic and applying similar price increases, I'll say $6 each so a total of $24), the mandi ($20), the bastilla ($26), and the Kunafa ($9). The total should have been $99 before tax. let's be generous and apply a 10% tax. The total shoud have been around $109. Pricy but worth it. My family member handed her our card, and when we went to sign after the card had been run, we were charged $172. My family member didn't want to make a fuss at the restaraunt, so signed it and told me the actual amount nearly a week later. So the owner, for the price of less than the meal we paid, has permanently lost us from ever returning to her place of business. TLDR: Good food, but don't trust the staff with your credit card before seeing the actual itemized bill. This isn't a professional restaurant, it's a good cook essentially working out of her private kitchen.

Yelp
The food here is out of this world delicious! The owner is the cook and she does everything else as well. I'm very sweet lady and great customer service. The ambience is very casual. A small grocery store and clothing store is attached to this restaurant - everything has a Middle Eastern flavour. This place is a must try if you like Middle Eastern food.

Maria P.

Yelp
The food was as good as back home. The harira was served with a type of pita bread that was freshly made. The goat taijin was delicious and tender but for me the star of the meal was the lamb couscous. It was incredible delicious tender and perfect seasonings it's a MUST. Service was extremely friendly. As a small business, The chef is the owner and we were able to meet her. She shows the love that she puts in her food and the homemade murals that creates a great ambiance . If you are looking for real Morrocan food , this is the place .

Yelp
This is the only place that has Moroccan food with tagine. The location is not the best. We had the fish tagine, lamb couscous, hummus and Moroccan tea. The fish tagine was 5 star. It was so delicious and flavorful. I also love the tea. The hummus was ok. The food here is great and i would definitely go back there again if it wasn't so far. I do recommend this place and order tagine dish. The lady there was also very nice and welcoming.

Yelp
Food was absolutely incredible! Authentic middle eastern that's literally home made. You can't go wrong with the couscous! Will definitely be going back again and again! Yummmmmmmm!

Yelp
Eating at Alzohour is a special event. The dishes are prepared with care and are uniformly delicious; what the space lacks in beauty or the service lacks in speed is more than made up for by the real sense of community that the lovely owner cultivates here. This is a Phoenix institution. I've visited multiple times and enjoyed a number of dishes. The bastilla is a sweet and savory highlight that you won't find anywhere else, the kafta and gyro are better than any I've tried in Phoenix, and dishes like the molokai set Alzohour apart as well. I can't recommend this restaurant enough.
google avatar

Monica W.

Yelp
You never know when they are open! We came from out of town, checked the hours, drove out and the restaurant was closed! Sign indicated they should be open. Extremely disappointed. Called and left several messages, NO RETURN CALL.
google avatar

Cara H.

Yelp
The lamb fell off the bone it was so tender. Love this little hole in the wall. The owner is very friendly. The bastilla was delicious but too sweet for me. I would classify it as dessert over entree. I would come back and try other items. Next door is a little specialty clothing shop featuring middle eastern fashion. Very interesting find for sure.

Yelp
I love Alzohour Market so much because my father was Tunisian and I spent my early childhood in Tunis enjoying delicious food. I'm 61yo now and too crippled from MS to cook. All of my family that cooked Tunisian food for me and taught me to cook it are gone. I'm in assisted living and forced to eat very bland food I'd never eat. Whenever my son comes to visit from California, the first thing I request is for him to please go get me chicken cous cous from Alzohour Market! It's so delicious and full of the flavors of my childhood! The take out portion is huge and is easily 2 meals! If you love delicious North African or Middle East cuisine, Alzohour Market has got authentic, flavorful food! My favorite restaurant

Yelp
The other night, we watched a foodie show with an episode in Morocco. So, we decided to find a Moroccan restaurant in the area and this one popped up. We're very happy it did, since we just got back from an absolutely delicious meal. We started with 2 apps, hummus and falafels...the hummus was wonderfully creamy and flavorful...the falafels were probably the best I've ever had, they were perfectly crispy on the outside and buttery on the inside. The falafels were served with tzatziki and tahini, both were delicious! We were also served a basket of freshly made flat bread. For our mains, hubby went with the chicken tagine and I chose the lamb tagine. We couldn't decide which one we each wanted, so we got both and shared. The lamb was perfectly cooked, pulled right off the bone with a hint of sweetness from the prunes cooked in the broth. The chicken was also perfectly cooked and fell right off the bones with a more savory broth, but wonderful. We couldn't stop eating, everything was so good! I believe our waitress was also the chef and owner. The food took a little while, but was well worth the wait. Now that we've tasted Moroccan cooking, we'll definitely be coming back...can't wait!!!

Yelp
Hole in the wall joint with great Moroccan/middle eastern food. I believe this to be a 1-person operation as my waitress, was also the cook. Come to find out she was the owner, Zohr. I really, really, really, wanted the chicken tagine. Unfortunately, she ran out so I settled for the mixed plate and a kebab tagine, which was a surprise she brought out. It was a lot. (See pics) Me being familiar with the Bastilla did not order it but my colleague did. I did get to taste it and it's no wonder it's probably the most popular dish in this place. The flavors are out of this work. A little savory and sweet. This is a dish you can eat alone, if you are hungry, or share. My dish was solid and enjoyable but I would probably try something else in the future. Due to the one-person operation, service does suffer. If you are in the area give this place a try and get the Bastilla. It won't disappoint.

Yelp
Tried their beef burgers yesterday for the first time, and I have to say I was pretty impressed. It wasnt exceptional however, I have to say, but if I'm ever looking for Halal burgers, I would definitely give them a second chance. Their garlic sauce, however, needs to be worked on and was to yogurt-based, which was not like the traditional garlic sauce were used to. Overall definitely a place worth checking out for Halal food.

Yelp
There is no need to hop The Marrakech Express since Alzohour Market is in Phoenix. This is a small Moroccan/ Middle Eastern Restaurant, Bakery, Grocery and Islamic Clothing Shop. This place is located between north and central Phoenix but on the north end. We were really BLOWN AWAY with the food we tried. We started off with falafels. The falafels are the best I've had in a while...The Tzatziki Sauce BLOWS AWAY EVERYONE ELSES by a landslide. The secret is because the owner Zhor makes her own yogurt. Today we tried the Frekeh Chicken and the Couscous Lamb. The meats were well developed with delicious flavors and were falling apart tender. Both dishes were very fragrant and made with exotic spices. The Couscous Dish is extra special and comes in mild or spicy and was made with many vegetables that included carrot, potato, red squash, garbanzo beans and Brussel sprouts. I was talked into a special dessert of the day so I tried a cheese stuffed baklava. WOW for sure it was the BEST baklava I've ever tried. so delicious and not too sweet. We washed it down with tea.....and even the TEA was the BEST TEA I ever tasted.... (food portions run extra large) It was just a wonderful incredible experience! Parking is easy since this place is located in a strip mall. Hours might run slightly different then posted.

Yelp
I was willing to look around and buy something but they don't take EBT. The staff was nice though.

Yelp
I found this place on Yelp while I was in the area and was super disappointed with the food. The restaurant was completely empty yet the food took 20-25 mins to make. The market inside seemed dated and the food really lacked flavor.
google avatar

Jo C.

Yelp
One word. Phenomenal! We had been seeking authentic Moroccan cuisine and have just found it. Delicious food and gracious hosts.

Kameron H.

Yelp
First time trying Moroccan food & I love it! Zhor is very sweet & moves fast. Thanks for the fun music and tasty food.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food with authentic flavor, had the chicken couscous and it was awesome!! The tea was very good also
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
My parents went there, they said the waitress was very rude and cold. The restaurant was very dirty and they weren't even Moroccans. Very disappointed!
google avatar

Kim L.

Yelp
I so enjoyed my meal. The bastilla was so unique. The owner was attentive and offered me mint tea and lentil soup. The neighborhood where its located is a little underwhelming, but the serving size was ample and freshly made.
google avatar

Malu M.

Yelp
My 1st time trying this place. I ordered on-line for pick-up. When I got there the owner stated she did not get my order, she doesn't use Yelp and her Grubhub orders closed. So we had to wait to get our food. Which was odd because she knew some of my order without me telling her. Food was good. Just a rough experience getting for being 1st timers.

Emil B.

Yelp
I stopped by on a whim for the baklawa and knafeh (which went to my parents), and then ended up ordering a full meal later... suffice to say, I'm blown away by how good EVERYTHING is here. The labne is the perfect consistency, the garlic toum is mellow and creamy, and the kefteh sandwich is not only delicious but also roughly the size of a small bus :) As a Lebanese guy who is VERY discerning about his falafel, let me just say that Alzohour makes the very best I've had in Phoenix: perfectly fried, with a crispy outer layer and a fluffy inside. Nothing like the salty hockey pucks you'll find in other fast-food "Mediterranean" restaurants. The stand-out dishes you simply MUST order are their manaqish (stuffed pies) -- the manaqish b'sbanagh (spinach) and manaqish b'lahm (ground beef and lamb) are not only the best in Phoenix, but probably the best I've ever had outside the Middle East. All of this is to say: if you love the food of the Middle East, you'll love Alzohour. And if you don't love the food of the Middle East, go to Alzohour anyway -- they just might change your mind!
google avatar

Debbie Z.

Yelp
Everything was delicious! Saw them on FoodTV this morning over coffee and tried it for dinner. We took our order home after being out all day. Everything was cooked to order. Would definitely go back.
google avatar

Audrey R.

Yelp
Looking for tangine seasoning in Phoenix is a bit of a challenge. I found this spot on yelp and drove there hoping they had what I needed. When I first arrived, the place was closed. I drove around everywhere to find the spices I needed without luck so I decided to call this place back. Thank goodness that someone answered. The nice lady mixed the spices for me and even gave me a few pointers on how to make my tangine chicken. If you're looking for a place for authentic Moroccan seasoning-- this is your place.

Brittany D.

Yelp
every time I go into this restaurant I feel like I am in morocco. I miss Morocco so very much, so I enjoy coming here to eat the foods that reminds me so much of my favorite country. My husband is Moroccan and him and I come to eat and enjoy each other's company from time to time.

Yelp
Talk about authentic middle eastern food. I usually go to Tempe to get my fav maloukhia but i wanted to find some close to my home in central phx. I did a Yelp search and found Alzohour Market. According the 4.5 star rating on Yelp, i knew we had to try this place. Once we got there, we walked in and it's a small international market. Looks like your typical market. We walked around for a bit then a lady popped out from the back. She greeted us and sat us. She was soooo friendly. Got to talking to her for a bit and realized she was the owner. She has new paper clippings of her restaurant through out and I asked her some questions and she told me her story. Fast forward to the food. Mmm.... YUM! The molokhia was soooo good. I could really taste the flavor of the molokhia. The place i go to usually hides the flavor with a lot of lemon and chicken. But this is exactly what i was looking for. We also got Saudi kebsa. It was good ... but i wouldn't get it again. Can't wait to go back and explore the menu some more!

Yelp
I'd wanted to try this spot for awhile and finally did today for lunch. My friend and I ordered a Bastilla to split and a chicken tagine to share as well, knowing we would take some home with us. The chicken was delicious and served with rice and the bastilla was amazing. The prices were not inexpensive, but the food was worth every cent. Alzohour is located in a strip center and has a market attached to it which was fun to browse through. Don't be in a rush when you come here. Our order took some time, but it really tasted and appeared to be prepared with care and skill. This place is going into the regular rotation.

Clarisa M.

Yelp
Chicken Couscous my hubby and I had a very good Lunch at this place today, the owner make us feel very special and service was excellent, our first time tasting Moroccan Food , the flavor their food was delicious. If you're thinking about visiting don't hesitate, you will be very please eating this food !!!

Yelp
The Bastilla is a culinary masterpiece... savory, flakey and totally unique! The owner is a delight! This was one of the best things I've ever ate!

Sofia K.

Yelp
Wow ! This place is delicious. Drove 35 minutes away to try . Worth it 100 times I would recommend.
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
Everything was under seasoned & all the produce tasted old and low quality. The shop is cool and the service was kind and genuinely pleasant, but I unfortunately would not patronize this establishment again.
google avatar

Patricia D.

Yelp
I love Middle Eastern food and based on the reviews and close proximity to home, I decided to try the Bastilla. It is amazing and quite plentiful so I get the Bastilla along with some Tabouleh and I can get 5 or 6 meals. So flavorful and very good. BUT, I love it so much that I have not tried much else different. I am getting a Bastilla to go on July 4th and will find something else to try that I have NOT tried before. I'll be back often! Maybe cooking classes will be offered? Pat D

Yelp
This was great. First visit, we started with lentil soup, followed by lebne, kashkbademjan, and then the bastilla and lamb tagine as our entrees. The lebne was great, and the kashkbademjan grew on me -- it was (as expected) herbier than baba, which took some getting used to, but I enjoyed it. The bastilla is what they're known for, and while I'm glad we got it, it was the tagine that really stood out for me -- this is an amazing dish that I'd highly recommend and would have a lot of trouble not ordering again next visit.

Yelp
Business says they are open today until 8 pm but today May 24, 2020 no one is here and no one answering the phone for hours from 2pm nom 4:50 pm. I think it is a scam

Philippe M.

Yelp
Greatest Mid Eastern food in the attached restaurant... food is really exceptional and home made. The owner is a very nice lady who knows her kitchen and can offer a large variety of delicious dishes.

Noelle S.

Yelp
Home away from home. When you crave a good couscous with Merguez, this is the place to be! Actually everything there is good, flavorful and authentic! The owner is a pleasure to talk to, you won't be disappointed. Merci beaucoup

Phoebe A.

Yelp
Fabulous. Moroccan food at it's best! We had a wonderful bastella, and tasty appetizer plate. What an explosion of flavors to excite my tastebuds. Half hour drive we took to get here was well worth it. Very friendly service as well.
