I always worry about trying restaurants that have really fun, kina gimmicky food that is really Instagram-able. Sure it looks good, but how's the flavor?
I've seen a few Youtube videos and instagram posts of the Fat Baby from Amano, and I was intrigued. Recently, Morgan and I actually wrote down all of the places that we want to try out but always forget about, and decided to check out Amano last weekend with some friends who also had it on their list.
So first and foremost: while reservations aren't necessarily required...you definitely want to make a reservation, particularly if you have more than just 2 people. This spot is small, and VERY popular!!!! Luckily, we were able to get a table a little earlier than the estimated 45 minute wait. We'll definitely make a reservation before hand next time. (There's not a bar or anything that's super close by to sit and have a drink while you wait.)
Service was very polite, if a little aloof, but like I said...this is a popular spot, and there was really only 1 server, so she was pretty busy. She was attentive though, and made sure that we were taken care of.
Let's talk about the food!!!!
The first thing we ordered was the rosemary lemonade, and this was SO. GOOD. Absolutely will order again, and honestly will probably mess around and try to make my own at home. (Working on upping my mocktail/non-alcoholic drink game anyway.)
Morgan and I ordered the Pasta-Pie-Zoni which is a half a pizza, and a calzone, stuffed with pasta. Carbs on Carbs on Carbs....and let me tell you, its DELICIOUS. We were worried that the past would be too mushy, but it was perfect.
We did the New Yorker pizza for the half pizza side, which was absolutely legit and delicious, with the PERFECT crispy crust. The pasta inside the calzone was the angel hair puttanesca. One small criticism/constructive feedback would be that the combination of large chunks of anchovies, capers AND olives made some bites super salty, and others not very salty. We would maybe make smaller bites of anchovy, but honestly, that's just nitpicking. The flavor was delicious, the sauce was really good, and the past was cooked perfectly.
(our friends ordered a fat baby, and they really enjoyed it, but we did not try any of it so I can't really comment on it)
For dessert, the 4 of us split the lemon mascarpone cheesecake with blueberry compote. This was out of this world. 10/10 would order over and over.
While I don't foresee this necessarily becoming a regular spot for us, as its on the other side of town, we absolutely plan to come back here and try some of the other options. Highly recommend coming out here and trying some of their delicious offerings!
