Brooklyn Wegmans Pilots Facial Recognition Amid Fears of Dynamic Pricing | Eater NY

"I noted that in 2023 Amazon was sued for failing to tell Amazon Go customers in New York that the company was tracking their biometrics, an example cited alongside other retailers of litigation and regulatory attention around in-store facial-recognition practices." - Alexis Benveniste

Some of the food is expired. Check dates. I called Amazon customer service and emailed a pic and went back and they were still selling the same expired food. Otherwise it's a good place for returns and certain purchases.

Very convenient to have in the lobby, but the coffee machine often out of items and out of order early in the morning. Also sometimes still locked at 6:30 am. Again today latte machine inoperable. This store needs new management

Extremely awful customer service. When I tried to return products to Amazon, I waited for at least 15 minutes for the staff to scan my code. They acted slowly in purpose because they dont want their job and even go to drink a coke before come to the desk. Their attitude was so poor, they threw things heavily in front of me. No one owes them. This is ridiculous. Is this how you trained your staff to treat customers like that? I suggest to hire staff that are more willing to do their job. or at least give them a training. This is like a joke.

This Amazon Go store has a great atmosphere and is in an excellent location, surrounded by popular clothing brands, restaurants, and coffee shops. However, it can be hard to find for first-time visitors. It would be helpful if the management could place a sign outside Westfield Mall to make it easier for new visitors to locate. The staff were casually chatting when I walked in, which made it seem like an easy job for them. Honestly, in a nearly fully automated store like this, it feels like having so many employees isn’t really necessary. How to Get There Quickly: If you're coming from NJ via PATH to the WTC station or taking the subway to WTC in Manhattan, follow the signs toward Westfield Mall after exiting the train. Stay inside the building to avoid the summer heat or winter cold. Walk straight ahead until you see several escalators. Take the escalators up, continue walking forward, and look for the Nike store on your right—Amazon Go is located directly upstairs from Nike.

AMAZON GO IS HERE -Experience the future of Grab & Go! My family and I went for a walk in World Financial Center (Brookfield Mall) and just about to pass it, I saw at the corner of my eyes “Amazon GO” shop. My sister in-law is in Marketing field so we can’t help not going in and try this new technology of deli / grocery shopping. The step is quite simple if you already have the Amazon account. You just download the Amazon GO app, sign in to your account and scan the QR code to enter. You can scan as many people in as you like. There are not many products there, but they likely cover all sections. At this location, there are more ready-to-eat food that’s what I notice. This may be because this location aims to serve office people during the weekdays. The price is very decent. We got several items, put them the the paper bag provided on every shelf and just walked out - no line, no hostile cashier -That’s it.! The staff there said the money will be deducted from the card in Amazon account and the receipt will show all the info. After 30 mins, I got the receipt which shows all details of the products we got. Very easy to buy and easy to spend money as well ! Currently, there are 2 location, the other one is on Park Ave....will check it out to see if there are more products.

Google
The store is quite small but has fair enough selections. Lots of deli, salad, sushi and sandwiches, and some groceries. You don’t really need to download the amazonGo app. As long as you have Amazon app, you can get into the store and complete your order. The order wouldn’t come out once you leave the store, which confused me a little bit. It took a little time to pop up the order on your app. The staff were very friendly and answered my lots of questions. They also offer microwaves but no seat inside. Everything is self-service. Good experience

The guy with the mullet is always very friendly, respectful, and knowledgeable about everything in the store. Always come on the weekends he’s here. Always professional customer service 10/10

Google
Cool mini Amazon Go store. Snacks, coffee and cold drinks. Good prices too. Must have an Amazon account to. Take what you want and you'll get charged as soon as you get to the store.

Yelp
Great for what it is. Essentially a small sandwich shop / deli with essentially no workers (there is one there to help you if you are confused) and no lines to get in or leave. You swipe your go app from your phone, go through the turn style, get your stuff and walk out. The selections are limited to lunch faire, but it's quick. If you know what you want, you can be in and out within 1 minute.

Yelp
Sucks that the microwave is gone. There used to be 2 microwaves when I first entered this place and suddenly it came down to one and now there is none! So how can we heat the sandwiches and some of the food that needs to be heated up!? Also sucks that the hot food items are gone midday.

Yelp
The service here is actually great but literally what is the point if I can never enter?? For some reason my Amazon app never loads here, and the only way I've entered is by going into my office, pulling up my In-Store code on the office wifi, and then coming all the way back down. The data is generally really bad in the area (vouched by my co-workers as well), and if that's the case, the store should have wifi that works right? Their wifi is just as bad. I start pulling up the code all the way downstairs, but it still hasn't loaded by the time I come up. Then, I still can't load it in the store. The number of times I've stood in the store trying to load the code and then left is actually ridiculous (and I've seen loads of others do this too).
google avatar

Yelp
Every time I come here the man who governs returns is an absolute drill sergeant that conveniently takes his break at rush hour. The manager is lovely though. Beware if you must make a return after work.

Yelp
Everyone who knows me knows I like to talk to people, so naturally, this Amazon Go store freaked me out beyond belief. Swiping in and out with an app code? That's fine. Knowing what to charge me based on what I've picked up? Creepy, but cool... I won't lie. Not greeting anyone upon entering or leaving? WEIRD. Super weird for me. I felt inclined to wave at strangers after my experience here. The selection here is pretty good - you'll find a ton of beverage and snack options as well as pre-made sandwiches (haven't tried) and meal kits to take home. The prices are competitive compared to a lot of the other shops in Brookfield Place. PS - don't be that person who tries to get into the store without the actual Amazon Go app. No one wants to be that person.

Yelp
The word on the street (and by street, I mean office building) a few months back was that Amazon Go would take the place of Financier. It has finally opened! The concept is checkout-less shopping. You download the app, scan in before you go in the store, and anything you pick up is added to your virtual shopping cart. When you're done, you just walk out. No need to scan anything. There are cameras everywhere, so that's how it recognizes what you pick up/put back. I stopped in at around 11:30 and the line wasn't too crazy. It moves quickly. While the space is small, they only let a certain amount of people in at a time, so it doesn't feel too too crowded. I was expecting marked up prices but a lot of the prices are what you'd find at a regular supermarket. They also have grab and go meals, which are cheaper than buying lunch in the area. The meal kits look pretty good too. It's about $20 to make two servings of whatever the meal is. So glad this place opened up (but also a little scared of how much I'm going to rack up on my credit card. It will add up quick for sure)

Yelp
When I heard amazon go had opened in the city, I had to check it out. The concept of the store is amazing and a little creepy at the same time. To enter the store you need to scan in with the amazon go app. You enter the store, take what you want and leave. The sensors in the store monitor you essentially and keeps track of what you pick up and put down. Once you leave, amazon will send you a receipt with your purchase. The store itself is like a fancier version of 7/11. I noticed some things were a bit pricer than other places. I'm curious to try the meal kits they have here, I will definitely stop by sometime in the future. The amazon go staff members were very nice, any question you had, they had an answer for it.

Yelp
Amazing. Impressive. I was in awe of the new technology and convenience of this place. You open your Amazon app and scan a bar code to enter the store, then just grab whatever you want and walk out without having a human person there to check you out. Your credit card on file on Amazon is automatically billed for the stuff you are walking out with on your hands! I have to buy something just for the fun of it. Love to see more of this kind of convenience stores all around town.

Yelp
Walk in, scan your app, grab food, walk out. That's how simple it is to shop at the new Amazon Go convenience stores, but it still feels so strange to walk out without paying anyone or scanning anything. When we stopped by the Brookfield Place store, we were on our way to Hudson Eats so we weren't looking for a meal, but we knew we had to get a snack so we could try out the system. We picked up a Dominique Ansel Bakery DKA (love that they carry some local products), and sure enough, we got a receipt later with exactly what we walked out with. The shelves in the store were piled high with sandwiches, salads, snacks, even meal kits, and the prices were far more reasonable than I expected. If I were working nearby or lived in the area, I'm sure I would be here all the time.
google avatar

Jacky C.

Yelp
The smallest location of all the Amazon Go locations in NYC. I primarily come here to just use their microwave to heat up my lunch I brought to work, which you don't need to scan in to use. Besides that, I rarely see anyone come to this location to make a purchase.

Yelp
I kind of understand the Black Mirror-parallels - it really is like a convenience store of the future where robots have seized control and everyone just sort of meanders around being watched by Big Brother. I really did feel a tad creeped out with all the little cameras trained on me hovering in front of the refrigerated section trying to decide between Siggy's and Chobani. I still think that the sheer convenience would eventually win out and, on my third or fourth trip, I would just mindlessly scan in, grab my stuff, and leave without bothering to think what intelligence Amazon could extract from my yogurt selection. First, you need to download the Amazon Go app in order to enter. There's usually one employee standing off to the side in case you run into any technical issues. Then, it really is just as easy as grabbing a bag, filling it up with whatever you want, and then just leaving. The selection is about on par with whatever's in Duane Reade or CVS, though obviously with the 365 line-up. The stuff is, on the whole, cheaper than the food options in Brookfield, in case you're okay grabbing a prepackaged sandwich rather than an artisanal bagel adorned with microgreens. I mean, c'mon, it's like comparing apples to oranges. Now that I think about it more, I'm wondering how fast they can apply this technology to other places. No more long lines at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods? Brilliance. I'm okay with being watched!

Yelp
AmazonGo launched its first store in NYC at Brookfield place today and it's also the first one that accepts cash. AmazonGo was in full force today, starting with an army of people handing out flyers and food as people made their way to work in the morning. At noon, there was a long line to get in, although the actual wait was about 10 minutes. I thought it was ironic that their logo touts"NO LINES". There was an entire entourage of staff, directing people and keeping the line organized and coordinated. Once inside, staff was everywhere to answer questions. I thought it was impressive how they handled the crowd on opening day. They had to incorporate a break In the line to keep the walking area clear and they did a fantastic job of coordinating between the 2 sections of the line. The actual experience was pretty cool. You download their app which requires you to sign into your amazon account. From there, you scan the barcode on your app at the entrance and then take whatever you want and walk out. What you take is billed to you automatically. You are not charged for anything you put back. There is no way to see your shopping list while shopping though. I didn't get the bill until 30 minutes later. With only 2 short aisles, the store itself is pretty small and compact but the space is fully maximized. The food is all pre-made. There are no made-to-order or hot food areas. There is a microwave if you need it. There are refrigerated sections for sandwiches, salads, sushi, cold soup, drinks, microwaveable entrees such as flat iron steak, and meal kits in a box where the uncooked ingredients are prepped for you. In the center are snacks and even groceries like bread and toothpaste. Prices are on par with prices in the area for some items such as sandwiches (around $8) and a bit high for other items like the meal kits. The meal kits (2 servings) are about $19 but you still need to cook this. You may as well just get take out from a restaurant. The microwaveable lunch entrees are about $10 and the portion looks quite small. The menu selection for each category (sandwich, salad, sushi, etc) is pretty limited. I hope they vary the options from time to time. I had an avocado chicken salad sandwich and it was decent, similar to a pret a manger sandwich. I wish it was made-to-order though.

Yelp
This Amazon Go store is one of three locations in NY - it is located close to the World Trade Centre on the Second Floor, tucked away hidden into a corner of Brookfield Place - the store is fairly small compared to their other locations which is a concept I love. Swipe in via the app, and using the latest technology it accurately guesses your bill before leaving. I did find the selection here to be a little lacking compared to other Amazon Go stores with virtually nothing gluten-free - I was told to check out for the gluten-free labelling but this only applied to Amazon's products and was pretty rare to see. Sadly unlike the branch on East 53rd, they didn't have a coca-cola freestyle drink machine and I did find the pre-packaged drink selection to be a little poor. The selection was still pretty much A-OK, and while it is probably the worst Amazon Go store in the city, it is still at least average compared to the rest with decent pricing too! 3*

Yelp
Opening of the first NY store today. Solid line to visit for most of the day so the word got out. You need to download the AmazonGo app to your phone (Iphone or Android) and link it to some sort of Amazon account to get underway. Once you've done that simply swipe your barcode at the entrance and proceed to shop away. Understand that whatever you pick up will automatically be added to your "cart" until you either walk out of the store or replace it. Here is the fun thing to remember - whatever you pick up - even if it's to hand to someone else, will be charged to you. Let that sink in. I wasn't expecting to visit the store today but it is the opening and I work in the complex so I gave it a shot. I already had some food for lunch but I opted for the Broccoli Crunch Power Bowl which was satisfying and fresh. And yes I literally took my salad and walked out the front door. It's an odd feeling but I guess like anything else you can get used to it. Their logo is No lines. No checkout (No seriously.) Just walk out shopping. They do have a wide variety of items especially considering it is quite a small space. And surprisingly the prices are good if not competitive. There are certain items I buy frequently which are priced well here so I can see myself being at least somewhat of a regular. Lets see how this goes from here.

Yelp
My friend mentioned to me today that she wanted to check out the Amazon Go store. I had no idea what it was but I had no plans so I went with her to check it out. She told me that I had to download the Amazon Go app just to get in. She then told me that it was cashless which is why I needed the app. I figured instead of Apple Pay or Samsung Pay, they wanted you to use their version of it. Boy, was I wrong. When we arrived, I was a little dismayed that the store was so small. I expected a huge Costco or BJs-sized market. This was maybe as big as a bodega. I scanned in with my phone to enter through the subway turnstile-looking gates. I didn't plan on buying anything. But I was a little hungry and I saw these organic cheesy chips that caught my eye. I picked them up and kept them out, thinking I would have to checkout at some point. That's when my friend said "no, just put it in your bag. Your card will be charged automatically. You're good." I thought for certain that couldn't be right. So I asked the gentleman who was working in the front if that was correct. He confirmed that it was. So basically, you sign into the app, pick up what you need and walk out. The sensors on the ceiling sense what you pick up and automatically charge the card you have on file with your Amazon account when you exit. There's no wait time for cashiers. It's brilliant, but somewhat creepy at the same time. I'm sure many other stores will move towards this model soon. I'm curious to see if the complete shift will happen during my lifetime. I'll be back when they hopefully expand their space.

Yelp
I appreciated the fact that this was a Prime only entrance. I stopped in here when I was on my way to the Oculus. To be honest, I high-tailed it into this store because I had never seen one in person! The concept is simple: Use the app, scan, pick up your goodies and walk out. While I didn't buy anything, I really loved the whole execution of this place and they had a decent selection for a store so small. This would be a perfect spot to grab a meal on the go in NYC.

Yelp
This is the convenience store of the future! I came on a Sunday afternoon when it wasn't so busy but if I worked in this building, I would probably come here all the time to pick up essentials or a quick bite to eat. When I first went to scan my phone, I didn't have great reception so there is free WiFi available from Amazon or Brookfield Place to load up your code in the Amazon app. I was surprised how reasonably priced the items were in the store given that everything is on the pricey side at Brookfield. There were drinks for $1-2, salads for $6-15, and a range of meal prep kits depending on how fancy you want your dinner to be. It is quite the weird sensation to just leave the store without having to scan my phone again or something. I got a receipt a several hours after I left the store so it felt like I managed to get away with a free drink but alas Amazon really does know what you took!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazon Go is a nice convenience store for a quick grab and go (literally). They don't have too many things inside which is good so you won't get overwhelmed but also enough so that you can choose from a variety of options. There's sandwiches, salads, snacks, even toothbrushes. There's also raw marinated meats that are packaged and ready to be cooked along with meal kits. All you need is either the Amazon Go app or just the regular Amazon app. It's great not having to wait for checkout.
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
Whoa, I'm cringing at how the visual tech works but am also amazed at how well it works. You scan the Amazon Go app at the turnstile, take items off the shelf, and walk out. That's it. No waiting for a cashier, no self scanning at a kiosk. The selection is befitting of the environment - mainly snacks and packaged meals that would suit an office worker. It was nice to see some local items, like Magnolia cupcakes and Ess-a-bagel bagels. I'm surprised that the hours are 6am-8pm rather than 24/7 or at least to 11pm as it would lend itself to late night snack runs.

Yelp
It's a great place for a quick grab and go. Very convenient and we'll stocked. Staff very helpful.

Yelp
Stopped by here after visiting Eataly, and boy! is it impressive. Entire store is worked by only a few staff members. There's a small seating area off to the side where you can sit and eat your food. Even a microwave too. The store is stocked with pre-packaged candies, chips, yogurt, icecream, sandwiches, bowls, coffee and soda station. Slection is a bit small and the day I went, seemed out of stock in some areas. Download the Amazon Go! App and login your prime account. There's one employee at the front of the store if you have any tech problems. Learned that even kids/tagalongs have to be scanned in by their parents. I think it'll take some time for customers to get used to the idea of walking in and out with items. Definitely felt weird to me at first.

Yelp
I would rate it 4.5 stars. The convenience and quickness is unparalleled, the food some options are good while some are just passable. But most lunches sit in the $7-$14 price range which gives a bigger price range than most places in Brookfield that cost $11+ for a meal usually. It's like a more vast pret a manger! I've tried their chicken salad wrap and curried chicken salad wrap for $7.99. They're not amazing in taste (little lacking in flavor depth) but it's something to fill your stomach with. Their salads are good if you're looking for more simple salads. Sushi is a little more on the expensive side like $13. They also have some at home meal prep boxes for two that I'd be interested to try as well. But their convenience of using an app and then just walking out without checking out physically is great. You could literally get your lunch in 1 minute if you know exactly what you want and where to get it. Their app also tells you what the store carries which is convenient, and they have some good afternoon work snacks.

Yelp
You need an app to come here. I wish there was more selections as FiDi is just a bunch of sandwich stores! I liked their salads from Proper Food. The ones from Amazon are OK. Always get the Dominique Ansel cookies. That's the best! If you stress from work, just go downstairs and grab the best cookie! It is $4 but totally worth it. lol Please add more vegetarian items. Maybe a burger that we can warm up. I am hearing from the staff that there will be pizza. I don't think we need that around here.

Yelp
I went here at 7:30 to return a few items; no one was visible and Ulysses, who finally got bored enough to come from the back couldn't hide his annoyance at the fact that he had a first-time visitor to Amazon Go, who wasn't familiar with the entry protocols and kept leaving every time one of the entry methods wouldn't work. When I finally got in; instead of trying to find an answer as to what we could do about someone else's package that had been mailed to me in error, he basically just shrugged his shoulders and said, "well, you probably weren't charged for it, so I wouldn't worry about it." That's not very pro-Amazon customer, nor is it good for the company. He should've tried to figure it out. He also didn't try to help me figure out how I could return something to a third party vendors that I purchased through Amazon. I was treated with complete apathy. This is not what the world's biggest company needs in a brand ambassador, and if Amazon Go does not enable their people with more resources than what was shown to me, what's the point in having them open? Really disappointing experience.

Yelp
To be honest I didn't want to like Amazon Go...but according to my Amazon Go app I've been here 10+ times since this place opened a few weeks ago, so there goes my loyalty to local bodegas. The food is fresh, the prices are fantastic (example, a Chobani yogurt here is 99 cents where my local bodega sells the same yogurt for 2.50), and I'm in and out in under 2 minutes. Easy, fast, exactly what I'm looking for in a lunch get-out-of-the-office option. My go to items are the 'Go Salad' ($4.50 I think) and 'Steak chimchurri' meal ($10.50). Took off one star for the size of the store. It gets crowded.

Yelp
Store is pretty cool and it works perfectly (you really can just walk right out). But because of the popularity, lines can still be very long just to get in. Don't forget to download the app beforehand, as you will need to scan in. Good selection though, lots of healthy and diverse options. They still need to work out the kinks though; my mixed berries had mold.

Yelp
This is right by work and super convenient for me to grab and go snacks on my way up. I like how it tries to be "New York" with Ess a Bagel, Dominque Ansel, Magnolia and Bien Cuit. I haven't actually tried those items because they don't seem too fresh (do they actually get them from the shops and if so, is it daily??). The packed sandwiches also look suspiciously sad so haven't been brave enough to try. So why the 4 stars? Because ZERO lines (unlike the rite aid downstairs) right by my office and has my fav fage honey yogurt for only $1.30 when the cafe charges me $3 dollars

Yelp
The experience of entering and getting charged with an app is pretty cool. It had a decent selection of food items, I wish they kept some hot food items as well but overall it was nice.

Yelp
People are mostly going for the checkout- less experience. It is fascinating and the store, albeit small, is tucked with all the stuff you might need for a quick lunch or snack or some last minute groceries (yogurt / milk etc.) I'm not a fan of picking up off the shelf lunch boxes so refrain from buying lunch from amazon go store but I do like the idea of picking up that odd yogurt pack or quick snack.

Dew B.

Yelp
So I went back to give this place another try which means I had to reinstall the app to get into the store. It's still an emotionless experience devoid of human interaction and it's the same type of people who are going in the store, mostly people like me who are curious of the experience (looky-loos and tourists) and the one or two people who work in the building looking to grab lunch, the same identical experience I had a couple of weeks back. Again, it's a strangely silent experience. It's not like going into a corner bodega which more than not has no music and is technically a similar-style store but Go just has this sterility to it. Again, you're being watched by cameras up and down the wazoo which makes no sense because if you're able to get in the store, you're automatically charged for whatever you take so you can't steal unless you hop the turnstyle without the app. Unless you're in a group, no one really talks, and because of the creepy silent nature, if you're with people, you automatically talk in hushed tones without realizing it. What this place needs is music and white lighting and it needs really old-fashioned Frank Sinatra,1950s type music to contrast the colorless, plasticky Amazonian appearance. The aisles are too small for NYC, the store is just too small and claustrophobic for NYC and really, it's in the wrong location with the food court and Goldman alley not far away. This would do better in Times Square because tourists are the ones that would really respond to this type of experience. It's kind of like Nordstrom Rack in Union Sq., people who live in NY, whether they're real NYers or transplants, don't really go there and the problem with this location is that people won't go out of the way to go here. I know what the real problem is with the store. It looks like the Amazon cardboard box so hey

S T.

Yelp
I tried to check out the store. I got there and couldn't get in because I didn't have the Amazon Go app. The clerk up front said I could get in using the regular Amazon app. But I didn't have my credit card in there, so that didn't work either. She did not tell me that the store does accept cash. Way too much effort to get into a store that, from what Is a glorified 7-11. I ultimately did get in and purchased a chicken sandwich. Yes, very easy not having to pay a cashier. But the sandwich was t good at all. Tasted like something from a vending machine. The bread was wet and tasteless. The chicken wasn't very good either.
