Two of us dined at Amba last night. This is, without exaggeration, THE WORST INDIAN FOOD WE’VE EVER HAD.
I’m Indian and have eaten Indian food my entire life, so I understand the contemporary and fusion approach they’re aiming for. Unfortunately, Amba has taken classic Indian dishes, tried to add a twist, and in the process completely ruined them.
It’s a restaurant made for Instagram photos, not for actual eating. The drinks were good, but that’s about it. Shouldn’t have to rely on alcohol to survive a poorly executed menu.
It’s an Indian restaurant with no Indian people, no real taste, only a curated atmosphere.
Crispy Puris — a creative take on pani puri, but extremely poorly executed. You expect a crisp, flavorful bite, but all you can taste and smell is the overpowering zhug raita. It completely drowns everything else.
Clay Bread — seriously? Naan is supposed to be simple and delicious. I asked if we could get garlic on it, and was told no — fine, but at least make a good naan. Instead, it tasted like store-bought Stonefire brand naan from Giant Eagle: reheated, buttered, and served. Worse, it was brought out with the appetizer, so by the time the mains arrived, it was cold.
Chickpea Samosas — not as bad as the other dishes, but still disappointing. The bread-to-filling ratio was way off; it felt more like eating a breakfast biscuit than a real samosa.
Chicken Tikka — soft (a positive), but overly tangy. Like many places, Amba went too heavy on the tomato puree, overwhelming the dish with too tomato flavor masking everything else about it. I couldn’t eat more than a few pieces.
Nimbu Pani with Vodka — actually solid. I would order this drink again.
Final verdict:
I would not dine here again — and honestly, I hope you don’t either.
