Ambassade Hotel

"If more proof were needed of the Ambassade's – comprised of 10 18th century buildings -- significance, its central location on the Herengracht is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Inside, the hotel enchants with old world elegance – chandeliers, oriental carpets – and Dutch hospitality – cheese and champagne for breakfast! Choose canal-side rooms in this quiet part of town."

Ambassade Hotel | Best places to stay in Amsterdam

"One of Amsterdam’s classiest traditional canal-front hotels, this heritage beauty has 56 guest rooms spread over 10 interconnected 17th-century gabled houses. Many rooms have canal views, and are up in the eaves of the buildings amid a forest of beams. Chandeliers and antiques set the tone in the restful and elegant parquet-floored lounge and breakfast room. The Ambassade is a favourite with writers: its library contains thousands of books signed by authors who have stayed at one time or another. If you like a heritage stay – this is a good choice. It’s located on beautiful Herengracht, one of the city’s nicest and most atmospheric canals. It’s an ideal base to explore the city – close to all of the main attractions. " - Jennifer Ceaser

We stayed one night and paid $450 euros for a superior canal view room. ||While the location of the hotel has character and centrally located, the cost was far too high for the value. ||We were upgraded to a “grand suite” upon arrival. The room was a disappointment and consistent with the photos on the hotel website. More importantly, the suite may be unsafe for young children or seniors. It had had an odd layout with a very steep set of small stairs leading to an upstairs bedroom. It was very difficult to climb the step stairs from the seating area to the bedroom, especially with luggage. My wife has back issues and this was not something we needed to deal with after traveling. The ceiling the bedroom area are very low. I found myself ducking down to avoid hitting the beams. In terms of decor, the room was in need of modernizing and improved decor for this price point. The sound insulation in the bedroom is also poor in the room. We could hear the guests in the room below very clearly late into the night. | |In terms of positives, hotel is in the heart of the city and the staff were very helpful with checkin and checkout. The first floor has a great bar and seating areas with loads character and fantastic artwork. The breakfast is outstanding with a great seating area overlooking a canal. ||Based on the condition and layout of the room and the price, I would give this a 3.8 out of 5 stars.

Google
I don’t have one bad word. This is a fantastic boutique hotel that brought my dreams of an authentic character experience in Amsterdam to life. From views of the canal, eclectic decor, and traditional architecture - to the history of the city and heavenly bedding detail. I have not slept like that in years, I actually stripped the mattress to find out all the makes to order new for our home. The staff that was professional, personable and kind. I only wish I got their names to include. I will absolutely be back. Thank you.

The hotel is formed from a number of adjoining canal side properties. This gives an intimate feel to your stay. We stayed in a beautifully appointed room overlooking the canal (which I consider is worth the extra). The Amsterdam light festival was on during our stay; our room overlooked one of the displays. I recommend a nighttime cruise to see the other exhibits. The staff are friendly and helpful and you sense they know they are working in one of Amsterdam’s top rated hotels. The location is 20 minutes from the railway station and the museum quarter in the other direction with shops and bars on the neighbouring streets. We took a private walking tour arranged by the hotel which I recommend. We have no hesitation in recommending the Ambassade and would definitely stay here again should we return to Amsterdam.

This was my second visit to the Ambassade Hotel and it did not disappoint. The location is perfect for walking and exploring Amsterdam. For me, the best part is the staff, they are all so friendly and welcoming. They handle everything to make a wonderful trip. My favorite was to sit in the library with all the signed first editions, enjoying a aperitif. The rooms are lovely, breakfast is delicious, and the general atmosphere is so enjoyable.

Google
Unique and beautiful hotel in the center of Amsterdam/ on a canal. The staff were genuine and caring and helpful/ getting us into our room early after we had had a 9 hour flight and a ten hour time change. The room itself was lovely/ a superior canal view with bathroom of such size that it included a soaking tub and a rain shower. Fantastic location/ easy to walk everywhere with wonderful restaurants and shopping nearby. Highly recommend.

Google
Phenomenal place to stay- could not have been more perfect or beautiful. Loved the canal view from our exquisitely appointed room. Staff was incredibly friendly and responded to our little random requests perfectly. Sebastian in the Library Bar provided wonderful local restaurant info and clearly enjoyed his job and getting to know the guests. We can’t wait to come back, even if years down the line.

The building is very nice and well maintained. The bar is like a museum. It is in one of the best areas of Amsterdam. ||But as always, it’s the staff that makes the difference. One example; at the bar my wife read about all the boat tours to see the Festivals of the Lights. The night previous we had seen an endless parade of boats cruising by and she wondered why. So looked it up. Asked me to book a tour. ||So I walked 40 feet away to the front desk area and asked. They had a vetted tour less than 500 meters away they recommmended. In less than 3 minutes the lady working the night of 13.12.25 had us booked for the following night. ||The wife was shocked. The tour was great. On what had been voted as the best boat in Amsterdam. ||I’ll book here again when we return. The wife would be unhappy if I chose a different location.

We had a fantastic stay at this hotel. The staff were welcoming and attentive, making everything easier for us foreigners. I traveled with three friends and booked the family room; it was spotless and spacious enough for all 4 of us. The location right on the canal is beautiful and adds to the charm. Highly recommend and would definitely return!

Yelp
Beautiful Historical hotel with a great location! We are traveling as a family of 3, and this hotel has a room with a queen bed and a twin bed for our son. Very comfortable room, very well maintained facilities. Very helpful and friendly staffs. I was watching my husband and son playing checkers and ordered a cup of tea. The barista brought me a plate of chocolates! What a sweet gesture. We love how the staff go out of their way to make it special for us. We had a lovely stay. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
We searched for the perfect hotel to stay in before starting our Viking River cruise. We always like to get in a few days earlier to get acclimated to the time change as well as see the sights. We booked the Ambassade Hotel for 6 nights. The first room they showed us was too small but the second one was exactly what we wanted. We had a canal view with a King Bed. The Bathroom had a tub which is perfect since we both like to soak. The breakfast was included and it was a delightful breakfast with lots of choices including cold cuts, cheeses, baked goods as well as yogurts, cereals, muesli etc. In addition. you can order a hot meal of eggs Benedict or omelettes or more. The staff was very helpful in securing reservations at restaurants, hair salon, giving directions to museums, etc.. The location was ideal. The hotel is lovely and the bar and restaurant are also very nice. And just a few doors down from the hotel is a the spa, Koan, that offers floating spa and massage. Nice place to work out the kinks.

Yelp
We returned for our third stay at AMBASSADE and recommended it to our daughter, who will be arriving tomorrow! It is our favorite hotel in all of Europe; charming, comfortable, talented accommodating staff, delicious food, wonderful library...on the canal in a truly central location but peaceful, serene. What a boutique hotel is meant to be.

Yelp
Love the Ambassade! Impeccable staff. Lovely boutique hotel; great breakfast! Charming rooms. Bad blow dryers. Why bother putting them in? They're kinda useless.

Yelp
Stayed here for 4 nights in July. Great location and wonderful staff working here. Really enjoyed our stay. Would definitely stay again if we get back to the city.

Yelp
We stayed at the Ambassade for nearly 1 week and most aspects were wonderful. Our canal view room was small but comfortable. The bathroom had heated floors which was a nice touch and they provided water bottles each day which was also appreciated. The location was great and you could walk most everywhere. They had a nice lobby room with some books and games and a bar area with a couple of tables. The front desk staff was very helpful too. I took a star off because the windows facing the canal did nothing to block noise. On the 4th floor - I could hear people on the sidewalk as if they were in the room. Most buildings lean a bit forward in the city so I think that's why the noise was picked up so easily. It would have been helpful to have a more soundproof window. I was awakened every single night perhaps 3-4 times from people outside . Additionally , it would have been nice if breakfast was included as it is in many hotels in Europe. It was quite pricey otherwise. We ended up finding cute and tasty places nearby but be aware , no bakeries or cafes open early or really before 9:00, so if you're headed out on a tour or something you may not find a place even for coffee. The price of the hotel was not inexpensive so including even a continental breakfast would have been a good touch. I would recommend this hotel but I would ask some questions to make sure you get a room that suits your needs.

Yelp
The Canal view is amazing! The building is a bit old, but all building in the area are the same. Easy access to local shops, food, and boating or bike rental location. Staff are very friendly and helpful, they came outside to help us with luggage as soon as they sees us out of our hired vehicle. Recommend this place for the canal view rooms.

Yelp
We loved the wonderful service at the Ambassade Hotel. Every staff member made us feel welcome and delivered perfectly whenever we asked for something. Our room (91) was great and had a big window and a view of the canal. Despite being on the first floor, we were not disrupted with any outside noise. The hotel was clean and decorated beautifully. The location was also perfect; it is just an easy stroll to all the action but you're staying on a street where there aren't a bunch of people who were drunk or lit loitering around. We already decided we would stay here again the next time we're in Amsterdam!

Yelp
Excellent, friendly service from all the staff, especially Femke (sp?). Centrally-located on a quiet canal. 15-20min walk from Centraal train station, 10-15 walk from anything else in Amsterdam (or close to trams if you don't want to walk). We did not get a canal view room (saved $) but it was still very nice: spacious, clean, modern amenities inc. great water pressure, robes, mini-bar, room service, etc. The Bistro has wonderful food. Definitely will be back.

Yelp
This is absolutely one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in, in terms of service, accomodations, and overall experience. Location: as good as it gets. Near several shopping and dining areas and not far from central Amsterdam. In a picturesque set of row houses right on a main canal. Service: Outstanding. The front desk employees were polite and very helpful. When we arrived an hour before our check-in time, they told us our room was not ready but graciously upgraded us to a deluxe apartment, free of charge, because of a last-minute cancellation. They could have easily had us wait an hour for our standard room, but giving such an extravagant upgrade to two young, weary travelers made our experience in Amsterdam truly special. As an added bonus, the bartenders in the library bar were fantastic as well. Accommodations: We stayed in one of Ambassade's apartments, which was located about half a block from the main hotel building. It was beautiful, clean, private, and well-appointed with an outstanding canal view. They offer free fruit and water bottles in the rooms as a nice touch. The complimentary Wi-Fi was also excellent. I can't recommend Ambassade enough. It is pricier than other hotels but the location, service, and accommodations are absolutely worth it. We will stay here every time we come to Amsterdam.

Yelp
We absolutely loved this beautiful boutique hotel in the most perfect location in the Jordan neighborhood of Amsterdam and would absolutely stay here again. It's close to everything! Ask for a canal view room. It's worth it. They have an amazing collection of original art from the CoBrA movement throughout the property. We only dined with them one night, but the food was top notch, too. Front desk employees spoke perfect English and had wonderful recommendations for everything.

Yelp
My second day on the road trip is was driving from London to Amsterdam. I arrived in Amsterdam around 1PM and the nightlife was amazing. The hotel was very nice, the staff was very kind. Excellent location. Parking a little bit hard, bit its normal in every large city. Bars and restaurant are close, markets are close. definitely a good recommendation. 5 Star.

Yelp
Fantastic hotel, perfect location and a book lover's heaven. All books in the lobby and bar area are signed copies of author's who stayed here. Very friendly staff. We got an upgrade to their next door spacious apartment, woohoo! Great collection of Cobra-art too.

Yelp
The staff and the location is great. I loved the area and it's quite convenient to lots of cute restaurants and shops. The room was a bit small for my taste. The bathroom was quite big so that helped. My complaint is the bed. It was the worst. It was two tiny twin mattresses pushed together. And it was so squishy! It had no foundation or firmness that you want in a mattress. I'm petite and small and found it uncomfortable in every way. I had the worst sleep ever on my trip.

Yelp
This hotel is gorg. We had a canal view and beautifully decorated room. It was so peaceful to look out and watch the boats go by. This place is centrally located to everything as it is a walking city.

Yelp
Very friendly staff and fantastic location. Extra marks for tracking down my Nikon SLR that I (somehow) left in the lobby while taking a call the day before. Huge "thank you" for that, and for so graciously working with our large family. A perfect place to call home base while exploring the museums, restaurants, and culture that is Amsterdam. Oh, and check out their Jenever collection behind the bar to get your evening started off on the right foot.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed here for three nights this past week. This is a very nice hotel -- clean, with beautiful artwork all around and good energy, and the hotel staff are very professional and helpful. Special recognition goes to Femca, a very hard-working and thoughtful manager who really tries to make her guests happy. She placed us in the perfect room for us -- high up, quiet, and overlooking the Singel canal. They will promptly bring to your room anything you need. The rest of the hotel staff were also very friendly and helpful. The hotel's restaurant is also excellent, and the breakfasts served there are amazing. Extremely tasty and fresh food and juices of all sorts. It is located in one of the nicest parts of all of Amsterdam, with lots of excellent restaurants, pubs and shops close by. We really enjoyed this hotel.

Yelp
Nice boutique hotel in a good location with helpful staff. A lot of character in the room decoration, confortable beds and good.service. Nice view of the canal.

Anthony R.

Yelp
Absolutely charming and a great value. I shall return for sure. I really enjoyed the staff and the service at this hotel. This hotel has great character. Right on a canal, this hotel is comprised of several old houses. It's accessible to the airport and walking distance to most things (Amsterdam is a very walk-able city) I had to walk outside of the lobby to access my room but I was fine with that. The rooms and service were both good. The location was very convenient. The main rooms of the hotel were intimate and well decorated. They have a very nice hotel bar with first editions of authors who have stayed at the hotel (even though they were in Dutch I recognized many of these names).

Yelp
Lovely hotel.Close to all the attractions that Amsterdam has to offer.

Chrysanthemum W.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel, fabulous view, lovely staff. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
Outstanding Dutch Excellence! The Ambassade Hotel is truly a gem. While most wouldn't consider it to be in the heart of the city, it is actually centrally located to all that Amsterdam has to offer. The pictures don't lie, this hotel boasts five-star excellence. The rooms are both modern and quaint at the same time. Luxurious bathrooms and comfortable beds. Internationally accommodating front desk staff. Get a taste of local cuisine at the fantastic breakfast buffet, or enjoy internationally classic. Despite being a series of canal houses, the hotel is interconnected, and offered several lifts and stairwells. Good television and business services as well. The metro station is a block and a half away, allowing access to the entire city, as well as connection to Amsterdam Central Station, which can connect you to Schipol Airport, surrounding Holland, and all of Northern and Central Europe. The front desk will assist you with any and all requests while you explore beautiful Amsterdam. There are several cafes and restaurants nearby, and plenty of things to do. For active travelers, you can visit everything by foot or bicycle thanks to the hotel's central station. Or, have the front desk hail you a taxi with 10 minutes, or take the metro. Truly a unique hotel, and a world gem.
