Eating great New York style pizza, while sampling locally brewed brews in Long Beach on a lazy Saturday afternoon with great company...what could be better?
After stopping in for a quick buy last night, we made it a point to stop-in again when we had more time to actually check out their small bier garden in the back. We were able to do so in December by taking the 61 from DTLB (took about an hour door to door). They opened the door at exactly noon as they promised on their signage, and we took the long corridor to the shaded backyard patio. We were the only ones there for our visit, as it gets busier during the evening hours. There is a schedule for various food trucks to come and provide food, but none was offered on this Saturday.
Every table has two QR codes that you can scan on your phone: one to get their current beers on tap and one to see and order food from the neighboring Thunderbolt Pizza (which will get delivered right to your table). The beer needs to be ordered from the front (same place where you would buy canned beer...which can not be drunk on-premise). As expected, the bartender was super friendly (and since it was not busy, I didn't feel bad striking up a conversation to ask his favorites). The one I wanted to try again (Ube Kape) wasn't available since it's seasonal, but a different Filipino neighborhood inspired beer was offered: Kabayo Caballo (2 horses: Kabayo is horse in Tagalog and Caballo is horse in Spanish...though am I the only one that it sounds a lot like a famous Latino singer...). It's inspired by the popular Filiipino beer Red Horse, a strong amber lager. I got a full glass of that ($7), and two other full glasses: Gandalf the Crisp Pilsner ($6) and Vert Doubles Belgian Saison($6). All 3 were extremely easy to drink, no hoppiness or overt maltiness whatsoever. The Gandalf would have been right at home across the street at the German restaurant. I love wheat beer and the saison was decent, with a hint of sourness. All the beers are decently priced and one can try free samples to choose your favorite.
Like last time, we went home with a 4 pack, but this time with one we've already drank: Kabayo Caballo. We'll serve this during our Christmas Party, to share in the joy (don't worry...all the invited don't do much yelping, so hopefully a surprise).
