The Best Restaurants to Eat Alone in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"In the land of smash burger ubiquity, it’s nice to see native son Alvin Cailan return to Los Angeles with a thick pub-style burger at Amboy Quality Meats and Delicious Burgers, tucked inside the former Chinatown home of Chego. The casual burger spot lends itself to solo dining, with a couple of tables inside, but the majority of the seating is in the plaza just outside. Not feeling something extra-thick? The shop is always rotating through other styles, so expect something new and worthwhile just about every single day." - Rebecca Roland

The 17 Best Restaurants to Try in LA’s Chinatown | Eater LA

"For those in need of a showstopping burger, head to Far East Plaza and into chef Alvin Cailan’s Amboy. The menu showcases 12 types including a double smash burger with perfectly browned edges or the steakhouse DH burger made with a 10-ounce dry-aged patty. The beef tallow fries are phenomenal too." - Mona Holmes

10 No-Reservation-Required Spots in the West Valley | Eater

"You knew that chef Alvin Cailan could make a good burger with his dry-aged beef, in-house grinding, and beef-tallow basting — in fact, you’ve probably seen him do it, on his online hamburger show that gets millions of views per episode. He’s bringing those same patties from his Chinatown eatery to a second storefront at Topanga Social. While the burgers are the star, not enough is said about the fries here: loaded with meat, onions, and pickled peppers, the dish is a gluten-free burger of its own, with potatoes standing in for the classic bun." - Vox Creative

Google
Wasn't aware you have to tell them everything you want. If you simply order off the menu you get this dry hockey puck with no sauce at all, on an oversized bun for the patty. I've had better experiences at McDonald's and Wendy's by far, and that's not an exaggeration. I've been told that this isn't the same product they sell at their original location, but clearly ownership doesn't mind stamping their name and reputation on this at Topanga Social for a quick cash grab. Inedible and won't bother trying their "actual" burger if this is the value they put on their brand name.

Google
Stopped in for a burger decided to try this place over all the other options in the food court. I ordered at a kiosk and they texted me when it was ready. The burger was delicious! The burger was really juicy and the sauce was flavourful.

Google
Try to go on weekdays from 11-4. They have a lunch special where a crispy cheeseburger, fries, and a drink is 15 dollars. I can see how the normal prices are steep but the lunch special isn’t bad. The food was tasty. The bun was super soft and the caramelized onions were flavorful and tender. The burger sauce is also really nice and the meat was juicy. I went on Friday at noon when it wasn’t busy, so that might have been why we had a better experience than most people here. 7.5/10 burger, a little small, could use tomatoes and lettuce, but I would come back 😼

Google
The service and set up of restaurants at Topanga social is just so bad. Youre ordering online and the employees are disempowered from being helpful. Want ketchup with your fries, too bad. Want a soda, you'll have to cross the pavilion to get it.

Chris Woolman

Google
Never coming back. It’s nothing special. The guy that ordered in front of us finished his food 5 minutes before ours came out. Plus, we were missing an item. Also, no napkins, so bring your own. Overpriced B.S. and zero smiles or courtesy. $44 with drinks.

Andrew Storie

Google
I have to say, highly excited. I ordered the crispy cheese burger. The picture shows a big smash burger over taking the bun. What came out was a small burger sitting preciously in the center of a towering bun. When it came out, all I saw was bun. It literally looked like the burger you would get at a gas station, that’s been sitting under the heat lamp. That would have been better as it would have been cheaper. I paid $9 for a tiny burnt burger, covered in kraft like cheese. The bun was all we tasted as it was loaded with butter. $9 for a burger on a bun and nothing else, literally. Would not recommend. Zero stars. Save your money. Oh yeah, cash isn’t a thing there either.

Google
First time trying Amboy and it was solid. Good sized burger, juicy patties and great flavor. My son got the Amboy Chester, which is basically a patty melt (grilled cheese with hamburger meat inside) and he loved it. The fries were nice and crispy too. Would definitely eat there again.

Google
Tried the classic double burger for lunch. One of the best burgers I've had in awhile. Good portion for what you pay for. The meat is tender and juicy in the middle, with flavorful crisp edges. The sesame bun is soft, but still holds the burger together well. Would highly recommend!

Yelp
I'm not sure why this is rated so low. I got the classic double and it was really good. Wish I took a picture, but the meat was smashed and crispy well over the bun. Sauce was great and bun was perfectly soft and toasted. Burger was $12 which is pretty decent considering a 1/4 pounder is $6. Is it twice as good? Yes. And better than shake shack in my opinion. Best bang for the buck is still In N Out, but this one of the better upper scale options. If anything, the discrepancy in reviews might be inconsistency and perhaps I got them on a good day with a good cook (Saturday at noon).

Yelp
Alvin doesn't deserve the reputation damage this location causes. I've enjoyed his Chinatown spot over 30 times these last few years and have stopped at Topanga 4 times. My last 2 visits were 30+ min waits for a single burger and overall disappointing service. If a customer is led to wait 20+ mins because of an operational error, I expect some initiative to make things right.

Yelp
I came here on or near opening day and it was one of the worst burgers I have ever had and worse at a ridiculous price. I don't mind paying for quality. This was not here. 20 dollar burger was unseasoned, with no sear, and misshapen. Took forever to come out for a single item order. F- Avoid at all costs

Yelp
While having a beer at rocks , I was hungry and decided to try the cheater . It's a grill cheese with a burger patty . Not much else unless You add it . But at 10.00 . It calms the tummy . Order on the topanga social website and pick it up . Just a kiosk . But you can sit anywhere inside the topanga social , which has good ambiance .

Yelp
"I will gladly pay you tomorrow for a hamburger today..." if you happen to be here at the Westfield Topanga Mall and are craving a burger, this is the place to stop by. *Located in the Topanga Social near Nordstrom, the huge food hall. 1) You have to order it at one of the many kiosks and they will text you when it's ready. 2) Head over to their counter to pick up your food. The burgers are very good. Very tasty and not too salty. The combo is the way to go. Includes a drink, fries and your smash burger. * Plenty of free parking in the mall lot

Yelp
Another restaurant at Topanga Social. We ordered their original burger which (as described by my wife) "juicy" and goooood. I would have to agree, it was just the perfect portion and flavors. (We shared one since we tried other restaurants). Service took a bit longer than I expected (15mins).

Yelp
Finally tried this place recently with my bf and boy was it one of a kind. We've been wanting to try this place but always overwhelmed by how tall the burgers looked but also ended up going for other delicious spots in the Topanga Social. We finally got some small items from the Katsu Sando spot and this place to share so that it wasn't too overwhelming. We got their Amboy Chester which is their grilled cheese with burger meat and oh my god was it heavenly. The service was quick and the food was delicious. It was by far the best grilled cheese I've ever had and I definitely want to get it again next time I'm there! I can only imagine what their burger tastes like. IG: @ammysalamii

Yelp
Do not believe the three stars, this should be 5 stars! Hands down, best burger in LA. From the bun to the patty, next time you're at Topanga Social and don't know which restaurant to choose from - always go Amboy!
google avatar

Dana b.

Yelp
It is quality, I got a chester, which is a griller cheese sandwich with a Burger party. Very basic but still very good. Reasonably priced
google avatar

Katherine P.

Yelp
Menu is simple and burgers are average. It's a lot of bread for a small patty. I got the ordinare and it tasted good just small patty, too much bread. I feel like I could have eaten a double with only one of the buns. Located at Topanga Social so order at the kiosk and they text when food is ready.

Yelp
Topanga Social Edition: Review of Amboy! My goal is to try All 27 of the Original Topanga Social Eateries and share my experience with you! --------------------------------------------- Amboy (experienced on May 10th 2023) The menu is simple, & straight to the point. There are 5 burger options, a hot dog, plain fries, Amboy fries and that's it! For me, simplicity in a menu allows for very little error, and gives a restaurant the opportunity to shine on what they do best. My first time around, I went with the basics which will allow me to compare and contrast their low-end versus their high-end burger which will take place on my next visit. Round 1: I went with the crispy cheese burger ($9.00), fries ($4.00) and a coke. -Was it life changing? Not Really. -Did it satisfy my burger craving? Indeed. -Am I nervous to drop $19.00 on their prized DH burger***? I'm slightly skeptical, but stay tuned for an update in the near future. (I may change my mind on this sooner than you think).... ***DH Burger: 10 oz. Dry aged beef blend, caramelized onions, provolone cheese, garlic confit mayo, burger pickles in between a toasted bun by Bread Bar LA. The menu states, "In Consideration of the quality of this burger we suggest ordering rare, medium rare or medium." O.k... After writing out the disclaimer above, I think this DH Burger is going to blow my socks clear off! And now, I'm intrigued! Ordering is easy, digitized and 100% self serve. Once your order is placed... Grab a seat, check out those latest reels on IG and wait for that magic text confirming your order is ready for pick up. Round 2: T.B.D. (But I'm hoping for the best that their DH Burger is worth every single penny; All 1,900 hundred of them. Stay tuned for an update!

Yelp
I don't find joy in posting a bad review but I have been thinking about how I did not enjoy this meal. Easy enough that I ordered everything from one of the kiosks. I got the Grizzly and order of fries. With 20% tip, it came to around $20 and some change. ETA given was 15 minutes which came out as promised in that time. I was ok with that time if food was made to order. What I received was confounding for that taking that amount of time. Fries were not freshly made and room temp and soggy from having sat around. The burger was served with three buns. I looked up pictures of the burger online and reread the description. It was not meant to have three buns, like a Big Mac. Between the two bottoms was mustard. It was such a weird, overlooked construction that just gave the impression of lack of attention to detail. Also, while the top bun interior was toasted, the exterior was cold to the touch. I picked up the burger and it was so cold and off-putting. The burger was less than 5 minutes old - didn't seem normal. A minor critique is an uneven melt on the cheese. The patties were freshly cooked and onion and pickles were fine. I ate half the burger and was sad about the product that came out of the esteemed burger man's kitchen. Perhaps quality is diluted since it's in a mall. Bad enough for me to write a novel over it.

Yelp
Burgers are tasty and not too greasy. There is little bit of sweet hint to it. Service is fast as it was not that busy when we were there. Decent portion. Not really a wow factor burger but worth it. Price is a little steep for $12, but its a regular price for topanga social dining. I still recommend it.

Mandy P.

Yelp
Juicy burger. Soft hamburger bun. Tastes great. Friendly service. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Isabel B.

Yelp
It was pretty good! The burger was solid and I liked the fries. I do wish it came with more but everything at topanga social is pretty expensive/mediocre portions.
google avatar

Helen S.

Yelp
First burger: missing carmelized onions, had pickles which we asked to be removed. Fries: literally zero salt Things happen, so we ask the guy working for a correct burger and salt. He says they have no salt, and "what do you want? You want me to give you some onions?" We ask for a new burger & he takes the fries as well. Second burger: still no carmelized onions. And he did not give us our fries back. Proceeded to have an attitude when requesting fries. Terrible service by kid in green shirt. Bad burger. Don't waste your time.

Yelp
What is up with these bad reviews and low ranking? Full disclosure I came by as soon as they opened on a Friday before seeing a movie -- so my food was FRESH! With that said... I enjoyed one of the best burgers I've had in a while. The classic is two good sized patties w/ grilled onions and cheesy goodness on a tasty bun w/ sauce. Fries were above average and certainly not cold or soggy. Even was able to signup for points on the pad and scored $5 off! :) delicious

Yelp
Located in the new Topanga Social / big food court at the Westfield Topanga mall. They serve the same delicious burgers that get served in the Chinatown location. Right now there are a few things to work out in the food court in general and here so there's kind of a frenetic energy going on right now and kind of a stressful vibe. The workers seemed very friendly and helpful despite being overwhelmed. We got the DH burger and the grizzly. I have to say these burgers are really good and I love the sesame seed buns. The fries and ketchup are really good as well. I definitely still want to go to the other location just to kind of see if it's consistent or something because it did seem a little frantic here. Not blaming the workers here. I just don't think they were ready for the type of volume in the first weekend. My buddy lives in the area and I happened to be around so we decided to check out the new place. I've been wanting to try Amboy burgers in the Chinatown location for a while, but figured why not here. I got in line for this place while my buddy got in line for beers and one of the other vendors. The other vendor happen to be close or ran out of food so he came back and we just ordered extra food here. We waited in line for about 2025 minutes to order and then about 15 minutes for the food. Again, I really feel like it's just really busy at the moment and I'll settle at some point. Also, I want to reiterate, the food is good, but you have to know what you're getting yourself into in terms of the logistics. My buddy and I parked across the street at the village and walked over here and I definitely would not want to do the valet for $15.

Siena P.

Yelp
Absolutely disgusting. The meat was practically raw on the inside with absolutely no flavor, and the burger itself was DROWNING in the cheapest yellow mustard. The whole Topanga Social is just horrible at this point I've tried almost everything and it always disappoints. This burger was gross

Yelp
I came here for family dinner and my husband and daughter got food here. I was able to try both of their meals and glad I did! My daughter got a grilled cheese and fries and even thought it was plain it was delicious. The fries were hot and the grilled cheese had good flavor. My husband got a burger and it was flavorful. It was hot and big for the price and he loved it. M I took a star off because it took forever to get the food but we will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
First time entering the Topanga Social restaurant court and AMBOY grabbed my attention immediately. Glad I did my crispy cheeseburger double with fries was perfection! Definitely coming here again when shopping or before a movie!
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
Great burgers, great fries great sauces love eating here. Just wish that one youngster cashier would actually say something when you order or say something when he gives you your food instead of just slamming it on the counter.
google avatar

Mickey H.

Yelp
My bf insisted we try this place because he knows and heard of the chef. This was a huge disappointment. We ordered their infamous crispy cheeseburger. The patty was cold and the buns were not even grilled. The buns felt like it came right out the manufacturing bag. Overpriced burger and would have been much happier with In&Out instead. Glad we gave it to shot and check it off the books as something to NEVER try again.
google avatar

Lissa S.

Yelp
Another great visit. We really love Topanga social. The live music, margarita garden, friendly staff. Joe is hilarious! The kids wanted a burger - awesome sauce. Amboy crushed it again. We got a margarita and let the kids run around.
google avatar

Alan C.

Yelp
After several visits, Amboy has become our favorite neighborhood burger spot. The classic double is a perfect cheeseburger, with deeply flavored ground beef patties, great sauce and a soft bun. For something different, the crispy cheeseburger is a close second thanks to the griddled cheese. The only weak spot is the fries, which tend to be under-cooked. Topanga Social is hit and miss with regard to its restaurants, but Amboy is a winner and deserving of people's business.
google avatar

Donna B.

Yelp
So good! We visited Topanga Social this past weekend as we've read good things about it online. Going in, I knew the first thing we wanted to try was Amboy (we also tried a few other places too), and it did not disappoint! My husband and I shared a Classic Double with fries. The burger was yummy, but oh my gosh.. the french fries were on another level amazing! They were crispy and just perfect, and they give a lot. We would go back just for those fries alone! Service was basically just handing over the tray of food to us, as we just ordered off the tablet. Ambiance was pretty cool though, much better than your regular food court. Super clean as well, the food hall had friendly staff going around, wiping tables and cleaning up. Highly recommend trying this out, and don't forget the fries!
google avatar

Ryan L.

Yelp
About a $12 for a decent size burger. More expensive than other burger places not too unreasonable for Topanga social. I don't particularly like the sesame seed bun (too many seeds and kinda dry). But otherwise Amboy consistently serves a tasty patty. This is Alvin Cailan second location for Amboy, his first one being in Chinatown.
google avatar

Kathy Z.

Yelp
Quite a delicious burger spot! Located in Topanga Social at the Westfield Topanga Mall, Amboy is over on the side near Slab (not yet open) and Shrimp Daddy. We ordered the fries and the grilled cheese burger, the Amboy. Yum! I'd order this again. Service is efficient. Order on the iPad for takeout or dine-in. I remember waiting about 10-15 minutes during dinner time. Parking is available all around the lot.
google avatar

Keren M.

Yelp
Not sure why the rating is low on here. Me and my bf grabbed some burgers and fries and they were a 5/5 for us. He got the classic and I got the crispy. The classic is nice and gooey with the caramelized onions and melted cheese while the crispy gives a nice crunch with the crispy cheese layer. Fries are the thin and perfectly salted ones, which is how we like them. For a quick bite, this was a 5/5 for us. Also the ambiance is nice for a food court in a mall. There's lots of plants and modern industrial decor around, so vibes are great.
google avatar

Bernadette D.

Yelp
Solid fast food burger! Enjoyed our burgers in the Topanga Food Court. Service was relatively fast. Not really friendly since everything is computerized and almost zero human interaction. Just one guy who hands over your good and checks your ID. The food court was like any other - loud and crowded. The burger was served hot, fresh and as ordered. The Amboy - grilled cheese with a patty - delicious!! The bread was perfectly crispy with empty cheese and a savory patty. Would definitely come back and enjoy it again!
google avatar

Leon S.

Yelp
It was an okay burger. But everything else brought my experience way down. Service needs improvement. We already don't interact with the register personnel to order & their service is passive. I love my condiments. & when I asked for ketchup & ranch I was overjoyed she gave me 3 ketchups & 3 ranches. Then I sat to eat only to find out there was barely any ketchup & barely ranch to cover the bottom part of the To-Go Ramikens. When I went back to ask for more I got pushback from the employee.
google avatar

Tara J.

Yelp
Perfect craveable smash burgers brought to you by Amboy. The burger gives a food truck feel and is an awesome addition to the food hall. Juicy burger, great flavors, fresh ingredients. The fries are a little on the salty side but nothing a cocktail from the nearby margarita garden can't cure. Quick and easy ordering with friendly service.
google avatar

Kayla H.

Yelp
I really liked the amboy patty melt. $9 bucks it's a decent little meal! I would go back again and try their burger.
google avatar

Bret M.

Yelp
Step your game up Amboy. Or let a burger spot that kills take over your booth. The patties are fine I guess. Buns are horrible and dry. Fries are ok. Basically a very mediocre meal not worth the price...at all. I would have no problem paying a luxury price for a luxury item and this is not it. I wished I had gone upstairs to Smash Burger. All that being said, I'm just speaking my truth. I would be glad to re asses and update my review if changes were made, however you've been open a year now right? Don't see that happening.
google avatar

Richard D.

Yelp
Good burger but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. It's a good option if you are at the food court and want a burger. A bit pricey though, but the cost of ingredients and rent isn't free.
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
This review is solely based on the way the restaurant operates! So, you get to order your burger/meal from any kiosk. This complicates everything! The Restaurants is completely unaware of how many orders are coming in and have no way to control the amount of orders. The issue here is the ridiculously long wait to receive your food! I've been waiting for an hour and have yet to receive my ONE burger! I'm beyond agitated and legit don't even want to eat from here! Go to the regular food court!
google avatar

Vlad G.

Yelp
We went her on Mother's Day and a lot of the food places were close. I went here because I like my burgers and there was a long line, so hey it must be good. Plus they were playing a nonstop video about a burger that won some award on a food show making it look all gourmet. Not only did I wait an hour in line, plus and hour to get my burger but the burger was mediocre. It was mostly bread and some patty. Emphasis on mostly bread. They advertise the bun as a custom bread by Bread block LA but it was no different than a MacDonalds sesame bun. The patty was well seasoned so I'll give it that. I paid extra for fries that looked like they came out of a frozen package and were nothing special. The facilities were under equipped too. Selling drinks in plastic bottles?
google avatar

Charles M.

Yelp
Located in the Topanga Social food hall - I was very excited to try Amboy as I've seen creator Chef Alvin Cailan on First We Feast's "The Burger Show" for some time. I ordered the Classic Double. It was a good sized burger, but I honestly expecting to be blown away by the flavor of the meat a bit more. It was good, but maybe I had too high expectations. The bun, however, was perfectly fluffy and packed with sesame seeds! Definitely gave it an "old school" burger vibe. The fries were crispy and tasty and I ordered a garlic aioli to go with them, which is always a winner. Tip! It's open seating in the food hall, so you can order a drink from one of the bars or even try some other food from one of the other vendors as well.
google avatar

Vijay C.

Yelp
My first foray into topanga social. Got the DH classic burger. I ordered at the counter when the lie wasn't too long, they ask for your number so they can text you when your food is ready. It didn't take too long. The burger itself was good. I paid about $13 after tax and tip. Worth a try.
google avatar

Garen U.

Yelp
Seasoning on point, crunch on point. Quality meat and a great sesame bun. Try this place out!
google avatar

Jude M.

Yelp
Taste: 3 Creativity/Authenticity: 3 Atmosphere: 4 Service: 5 Bang for your buck: 3.5 I'm just gonna say it, this is a glorified McDonalds!!! It's Mc Donald's just with better quality ingredients! Down to the fries! Everyone eating this look at the fries Mc Donald's!! Overall just an ok burger and fries could have sworn I've had this burger before deja vu #mcdonalds
google avatar

Eugene F.

Yelp
Was really looking forward to their burger. Love Alvin's food at Egg Slut. The crispy cheese burger was DRY and FLAVORLESS. I asked for some salt, and they didn't have any. So disappointing.
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
Excellent double cheeseburger with pickles and sauce!! Great bun too! The fries though are a hard pass.
google avatar

Wendy G.

Yelp
Omg I ordered the Grizzly burger, but a "single" not double- so glad cuz this burger patty was big & so very delicious. Honestly I haven't had a more satisfying burger in awhile- I'm so full, should've only ate 1/2 and saved other half ....... but it tasted so good that I ate the whole thing - there used to be a 1960's commercial for alka-seltzer where this man sitting on side of bed says "I can't believe I ate the whole thing & his wife says you ate the whole thing" hahahaha that's how I felt lol

Jeff T.

Yelp
I was excited to try this place, but I always saw the one in Chinatown whenever I want to eat howlin rays. That location has really good yelp ratings and so I didn't think to check the ones for this location until after I ordered. Service was friendly Wait was not bad Burger was not bad, picante was slightly dry. Bun was okay, didn't have a bad experience like some. FRIES... i've had some terrible fries, but this place by far takes the cake. STALE & OLD... cmon! Either management is being cheap or the kitchen was lazy, but one way to ruin the meal.
google avatar

Narek Z.

Yelp
Horrible customer service from the girl at the counter. Why does it take 25 minutes to make 2 orders of French fries??
google avatar

Olive L.

Yelp
Glad I did not pay attention to the negative yelpers. My burger was grilled to perfection the fries were hot and crispy. Completely satisfied!
google avatar

Joey T.

Yelp
Love Amboy's simple menu and commitment to a good patty and bun. I actually started off with the grilled cheese + hamburger patty. It really hit the craving I had for the cheese and meat - but it didn't do anything special. It was truly just ok.
google avatar

Priscilla Y.

Yelp
Pretty good burger spot at the Topanga social! Saw this on tiktok and partner wanted to try out the crispy cheddar one. the burger doesn't disappoint. The picked, cheese and patty were great but not worth the $12 tag. Deff worth getting one time if you have burger cravings!
