I live on the MAX line in Gresham and have had to travel 1.5 hours to Hillsboro several times lately. Amelia's was highly recommended to me, so I've made a point to have lunch there several times recently. The food is fresh and with good portions. I would call it traditional California style Mexican food. Nothing terribly exciting or challenging. Pleasent and fresh. 4 star food, 3 star service.
The first visit was fine, decent service, good food, in, out, and full. A nice quick lunch.
My second visit was after lunch hour. The place was half full, not too busy. I was seated at a table in the bar that had the AC blowing directly on me. When I asked for a less windy spot, I was placed in the back. OK. Lunch was good and an attentive staff.
My last visit, however, was somewhat different. A hot day at 2:30. I was the second table and was seated quickly. The waiter took a long time to greet me. No biggie. I ordered beer and tamales. I was so thirsty on a hot afternoon, and my beer never came, and I could not get the waiter's attention. After lunch was delivered, I asked again if I could get the beer. Whew! Then billing was slow. And paying was slow. I just felt that a mid-afternoon customer should get a glance once in a while. Not bad service, just very little service. Maybe if I was a group and not single...
Amelia's seems like a solid neighborhood haunt. I don't think I crave it enough to seek them out and travel over in an hour to eat there, but if I'm in the neighborhood and want tamales, I'll be back.
