"A historic pizzeria in Portland, known for its hand-rolled crust and pizza box art contests, has closed unexpectedly. Established in 1985, it is one of Portland’s oldest dedicated pizza restaurants. The co-founder mentioned that a sale to former employees fell through, and the restaurant is temporarily closed for cleaning and minor remodeling while new buyers are sought." - Janey Wong

"Teal diner banquettes and eclectic wall art add the aura of a classic 1950s diner to this unfussy, eccentric pizza parlor on Northeast Glisan. Under a ceiling of golden stars, tuck into a house special like the “Lucy I’m Home,” in which spicy beef, cheddar, tomatoes, and green chiles land on a chewy crust layered with chipotle sauce. Diners also have the option to make their own from a robust meat, veggies, and cheese list, or mix it up with a calzone or salad. While eating, check out the display of pizza box artwork, a tradition dating from American Dream’s early days." - Zoe Baillargeon

Nicely off the major highway, easy street parking. Placed order from the road. Pizza was piping hot when I arrived. (Sebastian had times it just right!) Got a large Hawaiian with plans to take it up to Seattle. But wanted to try the Pizza HOT so ordered a pint and got the hazy to try. They also had huge rice crispy treats and chocolate chip cookies for three dollars apiece and when I say huge I mean they were the size of my hand expanded. For three dollars? That's a no-brainer. Liked the beers they were serving but loved the host Sebastian and his earthy friendliness. Best part of the pie was the crust.

Hands down the best pizza I’ve ever bought. I usually prefer to make my own pizza over getting it at a pizza parlor, but I can’t make pizza this good. The crispness of the crust, the pepperoni coverage, the sauce to cheese ratio. This is the best pizza! My wife and I had it during the first week on a trip to Portland. Then we couldn’t stop thinking about it so the next week literally woke up an extra hour and a half early in Bend to make it back to Portland before our flight so we could get this pizza a second time. 🙌

Food was AMAZING, it cost $0.75 for sauce which caught me a bit off guard though. Staff was very friendly and offered to-go boxes. Atmosphere was calm and enjoyable.

Google
The gentleman that I typically see here is always so kind, generous, funny and the food is delicious. It’s different than that “typical Portland” pizza and I feel like that’s why it’s special. I’ve been telling my friends and don’t normally make reviews but if it helps change 1 persons mind to come, I know that can help this biz. You should definitely make that decision to check it out. 10/10 will be back!

Google
Great eclectic place. Good pie, great crust, and lots of them (they don't skip). The music was a bit loud for conversations and a smidgen inappropriate if there are kids around. But all in all a great place for a slice.

Google
Hidden gem! A must go, pizza was fabulous! Quantity for price just right! The gal working alone in the day shift was very friendly and fast👌🏼Beer on tap for those interested 😀

Google
Crispy pizza crust, full flavor punch to your mouth pizza and salads and delicious choices to make a wide variety of people happy. Service is great and the vibe is very old school Portland. Will definitely be back and bringing friends. Cesar Salad and the Lucy I'm Home were amazing!

Google
It's a cute shop! Grungy and dark on purpose, they are not here to create an upscale experience. Pizza, though, would require some alcohol and good company to enjoy. This isn't a gourmet pizza experience, but if you ever feel nostalgic for your early years eating lunch at school cafeterias, this is the place to be!

Yelp
This was a spot that a Portland native sent me to as one of her all-time favorites. I could see why. Appreciate the we're-only-hear-for-the-pizza vibe you get when you first walk in handpainted areas throughout the restaurant and boxes stacked to the ceiling. There are only a couple of tables so you might want to claim seats before lining up, if you plan to sit indoors; they go quick. I called in advance from the highway so that I could pick up a whole pizza and drive it up to Seattle. When I opened the box, the pizza looked so good: had to sit down and taste a slice while it was hot. The first thing I noticed was that the pizza was cut tavern style: into squares rather than like pieces of pie. And when I picked up a piece -- the crust was everything: dusted with cornmeal and thin with a nice crunch when you bite. I learned from a Chicago elder that this approach to pizza is what some call the true Chicago style pizza, before thick deep Dish came along and made a name for itself. Added some Parmesan and red pepper flakes.

Yelp
I drive by this place a lot and I decided to get some slices one night. They did not disappoint and I was stuffed afterwards. These are some serious slices and the crust is pretty much a delicious breadstick. You should definitely get some ranch or marinara to dip. The pizza was good, but could be seasoned a little better. I could probably be full on one slice. I didn't try anything else. The staff were nice and the pizza was ready to go pretty quick.

Yelp
My husband wanted pizza and we had heard of American Dream Pizza in Portland as we are super fans of ADP in Corvallis. I once asked if they were the same and they said no. But I'll tell you, when you walk in - the vibe, the look and even the pizza boxes were identical. Each of us ordered a slice and a salad, the lunch special for $8.00 - what a screaming deal (one topping on each so if you order another topping you're charged a little extra). Salads came out pretty quickly and it was simple but the best part is that it came with a huge ranch side! Other places have those small paper sides but this one was almost double the amount - score!! Next the pizza. The sauce was a little too thick, a little too much cheese and the crust just shy of being crisp enough. My son said there was too much pineapple on his slice. My husband said there wasn't enough pepperoni on his. Both my daughter and I had perfect proportions. The staff was pleasant and attentive.

Miguel R.

Yelp
Delicious pizza with generous prices matched with the sizes. A medium seemed like a large in all other places. Great atmosphere. Would definitely come back. Friendly service

Tom T.

Yelp
Very generous staff. Feels like original Portland with the cornmeal crust. My absolute favourite. Safe to say that I will choose this Pizza over the others anytime. Two sizes; Large and medium. Safe toppings. Nothing out of the ordinary. Plenty of indoor seating. Draft beer. Sodas. Kid friendly. Average priced against other Pizza joints.

Mike P.

Yelp
Amazing pizza. They use the best toppings and you can really taste the quality. The crust always has a nice crunch to it but a softness in the center. Very unique and great!

Therese F.

Yelp
Haven't been here in about 15 years. It's like I never left. Same delicious sauce. Same quirky decor. Only now they have a gluten free crust, which is handy since I'm now gluten free. Yippee! So great to be able to go back after all this time and with new diet restrictions and still taste that same great pizza!

Daniel G.

Yelp
Love their pizza. Also love the locations in Corvallis. They are owned by different people supposedly, but the pizza is mostly the same. We make our own version of the Tejano Pizza (Corvallis) in Portland with herb chicken, basil, smoked Gouda, red onion, bbq sauce (If they have it. Red sauce if they don't.), and extra garlic sauce on the crust. Get ranch on the side to dip the pizza in. It's epic.

Tony A.

Yelp
Full agreement here with the other reviews that complain about the crust on American Dream's pizza. It's less a dough than it is a cracker. While some may love it, we found it thin, dry, and fairly tasteless. We opted for half pepperoni and half vegetarian special, opting for the curiously named Round-Up (artichoke hearts, black olives, feta cheese, mushrooms, and garlic). Minimal sauce and cheese on the pepperoni half. Heaps of veggies on the Round-Up half, enough that one guest used a fork. The wet ingredients made the crust on all but the side pieces soggy. Good enough but not quite our idea of dream pizza.

Cheryl N.

Yelp
Good vibes, good pizza, and gluten free options. I highly recommend getting a salad here. The feta with artichoke and olives is a must. Cool decor, nostalgic touches, and great staff.

Bode H.

Yelp
I suppose if this is the neighborhood pizza you grew up with or if you are a child, you probably think its great. The nicest thing I can say about the pizza we had is that it's "ok", a step up from frozen. We had the Dream Special, a combo of minced sausage (weirdly finely ground like taco meat), bacon mushrooms and olives with sliced anemic/pale out of season raw tomatoes on the top. Their crust is yeasty tasting and more like a bread than a pizza crust. It was thin-ish, but oddly layered and bubbly, with way too much rolled crust at the edge. If the crust was good that would be worth it, but the crust is not good. The sauce was dry. The toppings were mostly in the middle, leaving a lot of space at the edge with barely any toppings and then a wad of pleated rolled crust. The decor could use an update and a thorough cleaning. I forgot to take a pic of the pizza at the restaurant. My photos are from the next day. The pizza didn't get any better reheated.

Yelp
Stopped by here recently when visiting someone in the nearby hospital. Was just hoping to grab a slice and drink for a quick lunch. When I asked what pizzas they had currently made to buy by the slice, I was shocked to hear that even their slices are made to order! So, we got a couple of slices based off their unique and robust menu and sat down to wait. Thought the slices were kindof expensive, but just figured that was because it was in Portland. When the slices arrived - they were massive! Each of us was only able to eat half, and took the rest home. In all this seems like a funky joint that serves a lot of food for a fine price. The pizza wasn't ridiculously special, which is why I just gave it 3-stars, but I certainly don't think it was a bad lunch in any regard. Give it a try, maybe you'll love it!

Jason W.

Yelp
One of Portland's hidden gems for Pizza Lovers. I've been hittin this spot since the mid-90s and I've never been disappointed. They have a unique style and flavor with the crust and all the ingredients are top notch. I highly recommend this spot for a great pizza

Bernadette S.

Yelp
Pizza taste: Absolutely delicious hot-out-of-the-oven-high-quality-pizza with the classic New York diner vibe. Pizza has the perfect asking of grease, thin crispy dough. Can't go wrong with a large Pepperoni, which we choose time after time. Price - Fair, reasonable pricing Environment - Super friendly, warm and welcoming staff every time Relaxing, stress-free, spacious environment for families, couples on a date night, a single person to grab a slice or pick up a to-go order Wait time may be a little longer than competitors, but the quality and custom bake is worth the wait.

Tiffany R.

Yelp
Moved to the North Tabor area just a few short weeks ago, and immediately after moving, we just had to try American Dream Pizza. The Goddess Athena pizza has been a near regular order for us now, and yes, while I agree with the other reviews that the crust leaves something to be desired, everything else certainly makes up for it! Good vibes, good pizza, cold beer or sodas, cool pizza-inspired artwork on the pizza boxes - this place is a solid contender, and will be my local pizza spot for years to come.

Sawyer B.

Yelp
I'm a life long portlander and this place has been here for 30 years dont know how crust is bigger then my pillow really dry and stale

Yelp
Best pizza in pdx. Awesome space. Fantastic service. Killer breadsticks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bryttney H.

Yelp
Ate here for the first time today. I had the "Lucy I'm home." Excellent service and incredible pizza, gluten free options. I highly recommend it!

Jer G.

Yelp
Crispy, cheesy, spicy, gooey, and that's just the service! The pizza is memorable as well. Thanks Chip!! You're a master braider!

Ross S.

Yelp
Arguably my favorite pizza shop in Portland. I have one word. CRUST. If you are a crust person, I don't know what they do to their crust at American Dream, but it is honestly probably the best crust that I have had in my life. While you can't go wrong with any pizza, the Dream Special is something else. I 100% recommend checking out this spot, and i can't wait until their dining room is open again.

Hannah E.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years, best pizza in Portland. If you like ranch make sure you try theirs too.

Chris G.

Yelp
I'm surprised by all the people who didn't like their pizza. I thought it was great! Maybe they have a problem with consistency. This was my first time after all. But the pizza I just ate...excellent! One minor nit...the corn meal they used on the crust was (almost) too much, meaning it was just about as much as I could handle before the crust turns "grainy". The toppings and doneness were A++! I'm also surprised by all the compliments on service because that wasn't my experience. While taking my order (by phone), I felt rushed. She didn't ask what size, she just assumed large and nearly hung up after giving me the price. I had to stop her to clarify I wanted a mini. Curbside when I called to let them know I was there to pick up, I was placed on hold then abruptly told she'd bring it out when it was ready. No time estimate. No pleasantries. No customer care really. I was pretty disappointed by the service, but the pizza was so good...I'll be back!

Lindy W.

Yelp
Great pizza. Was visiting someone at the hospital and needed dinner. I will come back again. Slice of pizza, small salad and a beer leave me full and happy.

Bryce E.

Yelp
Love this place. Have been getting pizza here with my family since 2004 and will drive across the river from the pearl district to pick up my favorite thin crust pepperoni and pineapple pizza. Yum

Suzette C.

Yelp
Not very good and very dirty. Lady working was unfriendly. Pizza had a strange flavor. Not at all a dream pizza.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Reviews are mixed between love and mehh, I fall in the latter camp. Pizza completely unbalanced. Crust is crispy thin bottom layer with the rest being a gummy consistency almost like raw dough, likely because the top is overloaded with cheese and toppings. I am a fan of loaded toppings but I also like good crust. The pizza sauce was also odd, sour. Overall I can understand why some ppl are fans, this is a rly junky pizza that to me rather than hits the spot just feels sloppy and makes me want to stop after 2 slices. We got half Athena (subbed Gouda instead of feta) half rat pack. Rat pack was better, the Athena sounded good but was actually bland.

Kelly S.

Yelp
I love American Dream in Corvallis- it's always so fresh and amazing, it's my favorite pizza hands down. The Portland location is nothing like this. The crust tastes like it's been sitting out and the ranch is watering. When I have ordered other locations they use fresh jalapeños and these were just from the can. The other locations always have fresh, soft cookies. These ones were clearly burnt so I didn't even bother. It felt like a completely different establishment. Such a huge disappointment for over $20 for 3 slices. :/

Jason P.

Yelp
Our favorite local pizza joint. Pies are huge and full off delicious ingredients. Restaurant is an amazing throwback to high school days.

Jessica F.

Yelp
Woah! I was told by friends how good this place was so I had to give it a try. I visited here while waiting for my brother to get some treatment done at providence. I phoned ahead and paid via card. I called when I was outside and although they said 20 mins wait initially it was more like 35. That's okay! That means they were busy! And they sure were. There were lots of cars out front waiting. It smelled so good the moment it entered my car! I almost wanted to take a bite right there on the curb. I drove back to providence and fond a cozy spot in the parking structure. It was still hot and I knew if I ate it then I would burn the roof of my mouth.... WORTH IT! The crust was so crunchy and the cheese so thick! It was exactly what I hoped for and needed. I'd say I'd go back today but I have quite a few left overs from the medium I got all to myself. They call it a medium but my gosh is more like a large. Not a typical round pizza with triangle slices but more of an oval with square slices. BRB going to go have some for breakfast

See F.

Yelp
Delicious crust and generous toppings make the slices here a full meal. Very hip painted kids chairs and retro table tops make for a memorable sit down too.

Megan H.

Yelp
The dopest pie. Breadsticks are drool worthy. One slice is FILLING! Worship this place thank you!

Dawn F.

Yelp
I love their pizzas with the crust edges that can double as breadsticks. Yes, you need to call in your order the old-fashioned way instead of using a delivery app, but that is such a minor inconvenience for their tasty pizzas that are so loaded with toppings that the boxes are heavy for their size. You can order for takeout or limited area delivery. We usually get the rat pack or a custom pizza. A few tips, their artichokes are marinated (I love that, some others may not), and their pesto sauce is so yummy!

Rose G.

Yelp
I have been going to American Dream Pizza for years. I remember celebrating my 12th birthday party here and it was awesome. Unfortunately, customer service is lacking now. I'm 30 now. Recently moved back to Portland and I told my boyfriend "You HAVE to try American Dream Pizza! It's so yummy." So we called to place an order and were met with the rudest man on the phone. My boyfriend was on speakerphone and when he hung up I said, "Wow, that guy was incredibly rude." We wanted to call back to cancel the order and say we are going to order somewhere else, but we were hungry... We were met with the same rude guy when we called to say we were there to pick up the pizza. (Covid times). I knew right then and there I would never order pizza from there again especially with so many options around. American Dream Pizza has lost a lifelong customer. As for the quality of the pizza, it was good. Not you HAVE to try this. Not the outstanding crust I remembered.

Aaron J.

Yelp
I've been going to American dream the better part of my life. They have always been different than other pizza places....it was the first place I had pizza with straight up bacon on it! Their crust is different as well, it's like a thick breadstick, which as long as you like breadsticks, it's great!! It's awesome that you can order a slice with whatever toppings you want on it as well as salads with all the same toppings! It's also a great pandemic spot because you order and pay over the phone, when you show up you call and they drop it off in your car, so it's super safe! Hope it's around for another 35 years!

Josh P.

Yelp
Pizza is awesome. But the staff is just plan rude. And kinda mean. I recommend get there food if you don't have to talk to them at all.

Crystal M.

Yelp
So I had a baby! And we were down the street at Portland Prov and as soon as I heard there was Pizza that was just down the road, I needed to have it. So I sent hubbs to get some and he returned with a box of square gold. Square? Yes. They slice their pizzas even the smallest of pizzas in squares. Which is now my favorite way to eat a pizza. The crust is always a little bit chard, thin, and wonderful. The pizza is the perfect blend of Cheesy and Meaty and never ever oily.

Maureen N.

Yelp
I love the pizza here. The salads are excellent as well. Delicious homemade rice krispy marshmallow treats too. Staff are friendly and have great communication skills. Have had some of the other dishes as well! Convenient location and quirky decorations. This was recommended by a chef from Washington County as best pizza in Portland. i agree that it is great!

Lindsay H.

Yelp
Best Pizza in portland! Home on the range is a must for anyone who hasn't experienced this place.

Frith P.

Yelp
Love this place!! Have been coming here since my son was 10yrs old-he is 30 yrs old now. Locally owned-owner is super nice. Staff as a whole are great-have my favorites for sure. The pizza is consistently great. The crust is amazing. Love the garlic butter they brush on after baking. Love the bread sticks. Generous toppings and slices. Salads are good as well. Always happy with my order.

Gayle P.

Yelp
Super great crunchy crust and cheese. The Lucy pizza is garlic tasting and so good needs pineapple on it. So much toppings on them. Fun to watch being made. Great employees Thanks Small setting areas but good view

Logan T.

Yelp
I'm honestly not entirely sure why this place is rated so poorly unless it's not actually about the food because the food I ordered was delicious. First off, the situation. Late on a Saturday evening a group of us were starving and after taking a short walk around the neighborhood, we stumbled upon this place. Instantly I knew we'd found a winner based on the aroma, scents of herbs and bubbling cheese wafting through the kitchen. We chose the Edward Abbey, thanks to my passions for pesto, and a side of cheesy breadsticks. The key when ordering the breadsticks is to get EXACTLY the right amount otherwise your dinner mates might spend the rest of the evening recounting your mistake, not that this happened or anything. Regarding the food the place is named for, the 'za, it was magnificent on every level. Thin wood fired crust, cheese as rich as a millionaire, pesto good enough to be a dessert, and artichokes, delicious artichokes. In summary, eat here if you like great pizza. I can't wait to try it again next time I'm in town!

Curtis B.

Yelp
Great place with a very friendly staff! Perhaps the best crust ever - delicious and chewy with a unique crispy "snap" like no other. We had the Marilyn Monroe. If Marilyn Monroe had been a pizza this would certainly be it. Enjoy. Mmmm... Marilyn.

Andrew H.

Yelp
Crisp, crunchy and just down right tasty. I was just plain surprised at the balance of this pizza and it's not even NJ/NY pizza. I am very picky about my pizza if you've seen my past ramblings about Portland and it's pizza places. I can be critical and what some people think as amazing, I haven't been too impressed with. This place was a surprise. I just recently moved into the North Tabor area and in my wanderings I've seen American Dream. I went by just to grab a slice. They have a lunch special until 4pm of a salad and slice with one topping on each. 4:02pm. They aren't sticklers. Pepperoni for the slice and I added pepperoncini on my salad with oil and vinegar. There was also a Coalition IPA special on tap. A buck off. No problem. The salad was your run of the mill iceberg lettuce with slivers of carrots and cabbage but that dressing was actually pretty good and they don't skimp on it. Throw in a generous amounts of sliced pepperonci and you've got something there. The slice of pizza wasn't so hot that it was going to burn the roof of my mouth so that was good. A braided crust? Interesting. I can't say I've seen that much. Now when I referred to this being crisp, I mean it. This isn't foldable pizza like most all eastcoasters do. So if there's a negative, that's really about it. The cheese and sauce was perfect. The pepperoni was large and spicy and the outer crust was crunchy and soft at the same time with a bite of salt at the end. That crust was good to dip in the leftover salad dressing or marinara if I'd had some. The rest of the crust kind of snapped as soon as I attempted to fold it. So not NJ/NY pizza but still good. American Dream makes a pretty good slice. I'd like to go back and try some of their specialty pies. Even better they deliver, and since I'm walking distance, they'll drop one off. Enjoy.

Andrew A.

Yelp
Middle of the road: not bad, not great. On that note, one of the more memorable pizzas I've had ANYWHERE was the custom Gouda and avocado here. Service is nice. If you're looking for sit down with fairly easy parking, then you can't go wrong.

Marc F.

Yelp
The Dream Pizza, they live inside of my head The Dream Pizza, they're leaving crumbs in the bed The Dream Pizza, they're making a delivery; oh, no You know I'm Home Lucy Got some 'splainin' to do And with the chipotle I don't think I'll survive Sound Bite, Sound Bite 'Cause they're cooking for me They're looking for me Every single night Warm place to entertain Ovens inside the rain Well, I can't decide Otis or Abbey And with Gouda Smokey Feta's singing the Blues cheesy, cheesy I try to sleep, slices await, they won't let me alone They don't get made to refrigerate or let me alone Blonde Bombshell Bacon won't let me alone Wild West Round-up, they are the Rat Pack reunion all in one The Dream Pizza, they live inside of my head The Dream Pizza, they're all American The Dream Pizza (Pizza, Pizza) Cheap Trick or Treating

Karmen W.

Yelp
About four bucks for a slice of pizza!! Good service. Go during lunch when there is a special for pizza + salad or soup for under 8 bucks.

Mike R.

Yelp
We got a large Dream Special. It was more than enough for the three of us. We had 4 slices left over which was lunch the following two days! The only reason it didn't get a 5 star was because I wasn't a fan of the hard and thick crust.

Greg T.

Yelp
Ordered pizza delivered for a group of clients based on their recommendation. It was not my style of pizza as it reminded me of frozen bar pizzas. The crust was too dense and lacked flavor while the sauce was overly sweet. There were plenty of toppings on the pizzas and they seemed fresh but this could not make up for rather pedestrian pizza. Also, the Caesar salad dressing had so much garlic it actually burned your tongue.

MJ C.

Yelp
Spicy beef is the best (and I don't like meat pizza). Not a great dine-in experience but so good to go! Crust is fantastic too.

John P.

Yelp
Amazing dive since 1985. Great pizza, salads, beers. Love this pizza. Don't do delivery. Go there and get it fresh!
