Where to Find the Best Halal Restaurants in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"The remodeled, welcoming space at Ammi’s Pakwan (recently merged with Mirch Masala) is clean and bright. With friendly staff and a thoughtful menu showcasing its best dishes, the kitchen sends out halal tandoori dishes, as well as curry and jalfrazie cooked with the most tender fall-apart lamb and beef. Its rich, buttery cashew shahi korma pairs well with the garlic naan — although everything in the world seems better when a warm basket of freshly baked naan arrives at your table. Note: The restaurant confirmed that their meat is halal, although it should be noted that they serve cocktails." - Sabra Boyd

This afternoon, I placed an order for egg biryani through Uber Eats. Unfortunately, what I received was far from biryani – it appeared to be a tasteless curry combined with rice. The experience was quite disappointing, especially considering the high cost. I cannot recommend this establishment based on my experience.

The food I ordered hurt my teeth. Exactly while I was speaking with restaurant manager about the bread, a peace of rock came under my teeth. The bread was burnt out as you may see in the pictures. Now I’m trying to contact the restaurant owner. You can see the garlic nan in the pictures. The food was also very salty.

This restaurant is now under new management and has also updated their menu with some new dishes. The craving for desi food is real when you are visiting Seattle from Chicago and after trying so many desi restaurants around university and downtown area, I can say undoubtedly they got the best biryani and chicken tikka in Seattle. Their Paratha and Chai is cherry on the top. A must visit place if you are looking for authentic spicy Pakistani food.

I wanted to share about my first time trying out Ammi's Pakwan because I was really excited to try their Pani Puri and Dahi Fuchka. The pictures on their menu looked so yummy! But, I have to say, I was pretty disappointed with what I got. When I saw the pictures, I thought the Puris would be filled with all the tasty stuff inside, but they weren’t. I had to put everything together myself, which was not what I expected. And the Dahi Puri, which I was really looking forward to, came with a small cup of yogurt that didn’t taste good at all. It kind of ruined the fun for me. Also, the potatoes that are supposed to go with it were on their own and didn’t taste right. They were a bit bitter, which was surprising because I usually love potatoes in any form. So, yeah, my first review ever is a bit of a bummer because I was hoping to find a new favorite place for Pani Puri and Dahi Fuchka. I guess the lesson here is that sometimes what you see in pictures isn’t what you get, and that’s okay. I just wish it had been a better experience.

Aug 4 2019 late night dinner with Svp. Got vegetarian paneer biryani: $12. The cashier was nice. There was delay due to confusion in the order. Received complimentary drinks as compensation. The Food tasted different from Indian restaurant, but could be improved further. The portion size was huge. Also tried vegetarian samosa: good and seemed freshly made.

First of all, this place is using old name. The waiter told us that this place is running for the last three years under new management “Mirch Masala”. I’m not even sure if they are still serving Halal food or just using the name of old management. We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Roast and Chicken Biryani. OMG, I have not eat worst food than this one. CR was so dry that it seemed it was from yesterday. C Tikka Masala was made in the base of butter Chk. Rice had human hair in it. Very pricey food. Food was pricey that it is not even worth 50% what I paid for it. I will never recommend this to anyone. VERY DISAPPOINTING.

Google
Good food and customer service. A bit tight space for sitting. Kids high chairs are available. Washrooms were clean and well maintained. Tandoori Chicken was really tasty but rest of the food like kebabs and naans were good too. Only downside is non availability of dedicated parking so you have to find parking on the road which is paid parking except Sunday.

Google
This places RULES. I can't believe I've lived on the hill for so long without coming here. The food is beautifully made and very fresh, and the service is very friendly. It's a family-run place and the vibe in there is simply wonderful. I highly recommend this place; it's a gem.

Yelp
Ammi's Pakwan is located on the northern part of Broadway in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. The MKE Yelper was insistent that I have Pakistani cuisine. Hey whatever, this was his second visit to Seattle, essentially my stance is do what you need to do. He called the restaurant a number of times to inquire about menu items over the course of his stay. Me, I would have just showed up with my feed me mindset. Finally, on 6/21/19 (yeah over a year ago) we finally ended up at the restaurant. Remember how Meg Ryan's character from When Harry Met Sally orders in a restaurant? Well here it played out in Urdu. Oh the brief and not so subtle visual and body language signals from the kitchen staff and our wait person. Just typing this now, I'm smirking and visuals fly by, lmao. It's rare for me to have someone order an entire meal without my input, but this was best to sit back and just wait and see. Eventually a variety of dishes start appearing, see attached photos. They were tasty but nothing overly remarkable compared my usual go to in Greenwood. The date shake was novel though. I still cannot believe the volume of food ordered. I remember just having a modest amount to be polite. The restaurant itself at the time went through an interior refresh. While seated, I observed a healthy traffic of takeout preCovid-19. And eventually towards, the end of this meal, additional customers came in to be seated. I frequent Capitol Hill, both preCovid-19 and during the pandemic restrictions. It is good to see they remain in business even after a year of me driving or walking past. Maybe, just maybe, I'll return and see what the big deal is about any of the bone-in goat entrees that wasn't available back then.

Yelp
Finally got take out from here! It was just down the street and the smells walking by always were amazing. I ordered pick up through door dash, super easy and ready early. I got prawn tikka masala, garlic naan, and mango chutney. They have promos for discounts too so got $4 off the total, but prices were already reasonable for the area. Huge portions! I have so much leftover rice and masala. Chutney was awesome, mint chutney a little watery then I am used to but I don't mind!
google avatar

Suhail M.

Yelp
One of the best chicken tikka I've ever had! Loved it... I loved the vegetables that came with it too. The only comment I have is that I ordered it medium spice and it was more like mild, but next time I'll dare to order it spicy and see how that goes!

Yelp
We are in love with the way they make their Mutton There are not a lot of places who can cook Merton well but this place is definitely one of the good ones Yeah just the sheer smell of it makes me nostalgic
google avatar

Yelp
Did not enjoy the chicken biryani from this place. The taste was very off putting and nowhere close to a biryani. I have ordered biryani from any and all restaurants that would deliver to me in Seattle downtown area, and this has to be one of the worst ones.

Yelp
I'm not a guy who leaves bad reviews but in this case I have no choice. Food and services was good, but I ordered fooloda, and there were pieces of plastic inside it. My 4 year old wanted to eat it but I couldn't feed it to her. See photo. I informed our server and he didn't seem concerned and there was no apology from him. I asked him why this happened and he replied, maybe pieces of plastic fell inside when they were unpacking it, I am like what? Server took the money off of our bill but showed no concern or no apology, he acted as if it's just normal.

Yelp
We got the faloodas from Ammi's Pakwan. The pick up while maintaining social distancing was well done. We got the Oreo and rasmalai falooda. While we were so glad to actually fine falooda in Seattle the taste of the faloodas was not great (personal preference) it was somehow a little sour which was not great.

Yelp
I ordered through GrubHub and the food was stale. The okra masala had gone bad, litterally smelling like rotten food. I also ordered roti and they sent a naan. Very disappointed and of course there is no refund.

Yelp
I love this place. The food is great (highly recommend the Vindaloo, Baigan Bhartha, or the Karahi). They are open later than most restaurants on Broadway, and as of recently they have a weekend brunch. Just got back from their Brunch today and that's the thing that prompted me to write my review. With how CRAZY getting brunch on a Sunday can be on Broadway, this was a very nice change of pace. We were seated right away. Their full dinner menu was still available to order from, but they had 4 special brunch items that all looked really interesting. We got the Halwa & Puri and Aloo Anda. The Halwa & Puri was incredibly unique, I've never had anything quite like it anywhere else. "Puri" is a puffy fried flatbread, and the Halwa was an orange colored sweet semolina-thing spiced with cardamom--it was very interesting and very tasty! The dish also came with Chana Masala (chickpeas) as another option to eat with the Puri. The Aloo Anda was a curry with potatoes and chopped up hard-boiled eggs--very tasty. It sounds like the brunch items are going to change. If you're looking to get brunch, looking for your traditional eggs bacon and toast, probably won't find it here, but if you're wanting go somewhere with no wait and to try something different, give it a try!

Yelp
Just tried this new restaurant (or at least new management on the site of a former Indian restaurant). Food was delicious! Chicken tikka masala was tender, fresh and served piping hot. Naan was obviously fresh, too. Family-run business, and they are clearly working hard to make sure customers are happy. It was my waitress' first day, and she was incredibly gracious, too! Give this place a try, they deserve the support.
google avatar

Navid M.

Yelp
I hate to write this review since the hostess was very amicable and welcoming. The food however was absolutely the worst. The rice was stale...very stale. The somosas seemed to have been refried resulting in them being burnt and greasy. The kabobs were edible but had an odd odor...maybe the spices?! I didn't have the heart to send the food back since the hostess seemed so gracious. Would I go back? Nope.

Yelp
I went in there to try falooda for the first time and their picture looked so enticing so I thought why not. The place was dark and the server was unenthusiastic. My partner decided we should have a bite to eat before so we orders stuffed paneer naan and stuffed potato naan, they were thick, doughy , and not cooked properly. Like someone was not even interested in doing their job. Then the worst blow for me was that the sever brought out a weird looking thing that was suppose to be falooda. Look for yourself what they gave me and the picture on their yelp page and on their wall , it did not match . A pathetic experience.
google avatar

Amit N.

Yelp
WORST falooda you will ever have in your life! The server was unenthusiastic, place is small and dark. Do yourself a favor, ignore this place.

Nithin V.

Yelp
My dear Ammis Pakwan, when I say extra spicy it doesn't mean to add a hell lot of chillis !!! Is this Channa masala or Chilli Masala ? Do u have any idea how this tastes before selling it ?

Yelp
This place is really good!! My boyfriend and I live nearby and have late schedules so this place is one of our afterhours spots. We usually always order butter chicken and saag paneer and some tandoori dish. The food is well seasoned and well portioned. This is also the first Indian restaurant I've been to where they will give you naan instead of rice for your meal for free! Awesome for people like me who prefer to dip their bread in the sauce instead of pour it over rice. The menu is pretty small not much seafood. I wish they had a curried mussels dish but what they do have is executed very well. There is only one thng I didn't care for, which is the falooda drink. The picture on the wall made it look like a milkshake and the menu described it as a "very special drink" flavored with rose and pistachio. In reality it was like a milk like consistency with a very perfume-y flavor and a bunch of vermecelli like noodles. I didn't care for the texture of the noodles personally but tbh I probably should have asked about it before ordering. Service is very friendly too. They will seat you even a few minutes before close which is super nice. Thank you guys! The waiter even let me know one time that the tandoori chicken tikka is a better value than the regular tandoori chicken because it's boneless so you get more meat. Very nice of him. I like the atmosphere here too. It's very dim and painted with red accents. It's a super cozy spot for a late night date. It seems like most of their customers are of desi descent so they must be doing something right! Heads up this place can get packed on Friday or Saturday night. Came at 1 am on a Saturday and there were only a few tables open. I've been here 4 times now and it's consistently good. I would come here more often but Indian food tends to upset my boyfriend's stomach. We still come here whenever we get the craving! If you're craving Indian or Pakistani food at 1 am this is the place to go.

Yelp
I'm Pakistani-American and was raised in Houston (where you get the most authentic Paki food). I was so glad to try this place because it's pretty authentic and VERY tasty! Their Chicken Seekh Kabaabs are awesome! The Chicken Biryani is VERY NICE. And you HAVE to try their Garlic Naan! If you want to try some real Pakistani food, you should DEFINITELY hit up this place! Plus the owner and workers are so nice, they make me feel like I'm back in Houston.
google avatar

Yelp
Did not have a good experience here. Very surprised by the good reviews here which encouraged us to try this in the first place. We tried the papdi chaat, aloo paratha and chicken biryani. The papdi chaat had big chunks of onions and tomatoes with some bland tortilla chips - so bad we threw it before thinking about taking a photo. The aloo paratha tasted below average and barely like an aloo paratha. Biryani was biryani rice with chicken tikka added to it :( the rice part was okay with all the spices, but the dish was "spicy rice w/ chicken tikka" and not chicken biryani. Maybe we just chose the worst three things on the menu, but I would not recommend this place.

Yelp
Made an online order via grubhub. They swnd me lamb biryani instead of veggie biryani i ordered.when i complained to grubhib, the restaurant already knew.I dont know how you can mix up such basic things especially when the order had other veggie items. Taste was bland so i threw it away, waste of 50 bucks....

Yelp
We were tired of long day so decided to Order via ubereats. We ordered veg food and a non veg dish. 1 paneer kadai with garlic naan - spicy 1 Bhuna lamb Ghost with Rice and naan 2 chai tea Food: 4/5 Quantity: 3.5/4 The food was tasty and edible. I don't usually like vegetarian food much but Paneer kadai was very good. I would love to have food from this restaurant, May be visit instead of online ordering, will update the post next time if something changes!

Yelp
Going with the status quo on the score. Ammi's has potential, evidenced by the quality of some of their offerings. The Bad: * my Lamb Korma was actually chicken thigh korma * the homemade mango pickles were made in the home of National's factory * the naan was charred (not completely burnt, but much of the surface was blackened). Furthermore, they didn't take the time to properly stretch the dough so that you had a somewhat thin, and relatively even thickness. BTW, why can't I seem to get good naan in Seattle? The Good: * the korma (imposter meat) was actually quite good, I enjoyed the flavor. 'Extra hot' it wasn't, but nice anyway * I actually like National pickles (despite the chunks of mango pit) * basmati rice was reasonable, as was the raita If you could deliver what you advertise, and get your naan together, you'd have the potential for a 5 star rating.

Yelp
This place is considered as halal food. The owners are known as Muslims. Easy to find the restaurant in the complicated streets of Seattle. We ordered three meals: chicken tikka masala, chicken tandoori, and lamb biryani. The food was prepared fresh. Tasty, delicious, magnificent, and excellent food. The amount of food is great. Chicken tikka masala was prepared well compared to other Indian restaurants. My spicy level was 4, and you can still taste the food! Tandoori is very good, a good choice (but don't order it too spicy, only comment). The spices of the biryani was well chosen by the chief, and that made it good. The only thing is the prices of the food, expensive. The staff are very friendly. Would recommend it to everyone

Yelp
Pretty good food! REALLY REALLY enjoyed their saag paneer . Their garlic basil naan was also pretty good However, didn't really think the chicken till masala was the best - could have been a little more spicy and tasty but regardless good portions. Their jeera rice is the BEST part...can recognize it's made in ghee...too yummy! Also, this is great late night food as they are open till late .
google avatar

Nitish K.

Yelp
Ordered house special korma, it was sooo bad that we had to throw the whole thing. Raita with biryani was stale. Dal makhani and seekh kabab were still edible. Overall very disappointed with the food.
google avatar

Nagesh S.

Yelp
I went here 3rd time. It was busier than usual around 11 pm. Tried their dal tadka , dal makhani and it was good. Also ordered paneer kadai which was slightly tangier than usual. Most of my friends didnt like it. The owner didn't charge us for one plate although we ordered too. It was good gesture from his side. Ambience is good , value for money and best part is open till late so you have some Indian food restaurant to dine in late in the city.
google avatar

Sruti A.

Yelp
Their shahi pulao is the best. This time we ordered one plate of that plus cauliflower 65 be cauliflower was very oily and there was no salt in it.
google avatar

Alice K.

Yelp
slow service, mediocre food, not coming back We ordered 3 stars and it wasn't spicy at all. We had to ask for our water to be refilled and there weren't many customers around. They also took really long for an order of coffee, which was strange.
google avatar

Melanie Y.

Yelp
Got into town late tonight and ordered this on Uber eats. Twas a delight. We got the chicken tandoori, veggie samosa, and garlic naan. It was plenty for two and had left overs. Can't say much for the in store experience but had a super pleasant experience through delivery. Would recommend.

D J.

Yelp
I went to pick up my take out order from ammis pakwan tonight and they were setting up for a free community takeout to help people in the neighborhood impacted the covid-19 shutdowns. Their indian food is always delicious, and if you are able to support them, please do! These restaurant owners are amazing and they are stepping up for our community in crisis right now.
google avatar

Dei M.

Yelp
I usually am a big fan of chicken biryani but the biryani here lacks flavor. It's mostly all rice and a little chicken and not much else. The last times I've had biryani rice it kept me coming back for more, with it's blasting flavor, where as this is just bland and not much variety of spices used. They might have better options with better taste, but I was really disappointed with it. I think the only good thing is the size, you actually get the portion size of what you pay for which is a pricey $16 but so not worth it when the dish doesn't even taste good.

Sadaf S.

Yelp
I had gone to this restaurant during my visit to Seattle. Had ordered only chicken korma as I wasn't too hungry. The taste was good enough. Also, i had tried the ras malai falooda thinking it would be something nice but sadly it didn't live upto my expectations! Overall, the place is okay... if u want to have some good indian, halal food which i guess is not very common in Seattle. Also, i guess the location is an add on... this restaurant is close to Pike's Market! :)

Yelp
This is my favorite desi restaurant!! From the atmosphere to the people who work here. Everything is truly amazing and deserves 5/5! I love how friendly and welcoming the staff is. The place is a small and quaint restaurant, which I hope becomes bigger and more popular! The food is truly top notch, I would come here everyday if I could!! I asked for my food to be 4 out of 5 for spice and I was not disappointed. I really recommend this place!!

Casey E.

Yelp
I have loved Ammi's Pakwan since it was New India Express (the mother was a doll and a treat, and we became friends, she remembered my name, she was just a treasure, I hope she's still involved, she made the place). I do not know what they put in their Chicken Vindaloo that makes it the best Chicken f***ing Vindaloo on God's green earth, but it is, veritably, and in truth, the best Chicken f***ing VIndaloo on God's green earth. If you do not have the Chicken Vindaloo when you go to Ammi's Pakwan, you should, after your meal, ask yourself what exactly is it that is wrong with you, and seek professional counseling. And then go back and get the VIndaloo. It's that good. I've ordererd it about six times in the course of a month. Come to think of it, I should probably seek counseling because maybe I have a Vindaloo addiction. I admit that I have a Vindaloo addiction. And I will seek help... After the next Vindaloo ;)

Yelp
Tired this place first time, we ordered Malai Boti and Chicken Kabab. Malai boti is really good. We also tried Falooda is was is good. Best Pakistani Food In Seattle

Yelp
My girlfriend started coughing up something from the samosa she was eating. It was a long pokey stem of some sort that got stuck in her throat. She was able to get it out. I've been eating samosas for a long time and have never had this issue.

Rabi S.

Yelp
Ordered some Lamb curry, Samosa Chaat, Naan, and Gulab Jamun today. Foods were below average. Samosa chaat was all soggy like a curry, you guys should keep samosa separate for togo orders. Lamb curry was bland and sauce tasted like some tomato purée with out any flavor. I guess Gulab Jamun came out of can, it was hard and tasteless. Total disappoint!

Monica N.

Yelp
This place has merged with Mirch Masala. I just tried it on 7/7/21. I ordered everything off the appetizer menu for my book club. The staff worker helped me make sure that I would have enough food and delivered it himself. Let me just say that when a group of women eat up all the food, it must be good. No, it was great. I can't wait to order again or eat in!
google avatar

Ernie M.

Yelp
Sooooo good! This is one of the most wonderful and family run places I could imagine. I will be back. Such nice service with such great food!

Abhishek S.

Yelp
It's utterly bad. Very poorly prepared food that is passably Indian/Pakistani. The spices tasted poor, tandoori chicken was bland and had a load of artificial red color on it, biryani was leftover rice with a couple of pieces of chicken tossed in. One shouldn't judge south Asian food based on what this place serves. And the price is cap hill standard which is not exactly cheap. Pass this one for sure. There are other Indian restaurants in the vicinity.
google avatar

Rakesh Kumar S.

Yelp
I ordered goat biryani ,egg biryani, egg curry and chicken 65 . This was so far the worst biryani i ever had.. The quantity is huge, but it was so bad that we had to throw it.. the egg curry and chicken 65 was not good either. I felt really bad about it .. Paid around 60$ and had to put them to waste.. Never going back.

Yelp
This review is based off of three separate uber eats deliveries and not dine in experiences. That being said, I am highly disappointed in the vast disparities between what you think you're ordering based off the business owners pictures that are paired with the menu items, and what you actually receive. I wish the pictures I sent to uber would have saved in my phone, to post here, but unfortunately they did not. The portion size, and presentation are nothing like the pictures. Im not even certain what I received for the Lahori Lafooda was the same dessert. It was literally NOTHING like the picture. It was pale gray with a slight purple hue, no ice cream could be found, no pistachios, my delivery cup was LITERALLY less than a quarter full. And with that it was just jellys and some shavings of something that resembled the texture of carrots and almost no liquid. It had been frozen solid before serving and was still filled with freezer Icicles. The few bites it offered me tased good but it was still nothing like what was sold in the photo and not worth the $13 I paid for it on uber eats. The tikka masala was a similar issue--Portion size. I kid you not, I got 5 bits of chicken the size of a quarter and that's it. I can't even believe how tiny this entree was. I gave it more than one chance and more than one menu item and same thing, so I will def not ever be ordering delivery from them again.

Yelp
I have a lovely dinner of pakora, garlic naan and chicken tikka masala. The naan in particular was delicious. Very well cooked. The restaurant has been renovated and has a much nicer, open floor plan than the previous place. I was very happy with the prompt service.

Yelp
Ammi's Pakwan is our go to for ordering online. We've been there to eat too a couple of times, and the best part of it is that they are open till 2 am! My favorite dish is the veg biryani - it's more of a spicy rice dish with pulao than a biryani, but it's delicious! The starters are good too (tikki chole). If you want late night good spicy indian food this is the place to hit!

Dileep V.

Yelp
Items bought: Chicken Tikka masala pizza and House special tandoori platter. The only pro is the hospitality of the lady running the place. She was nice and offered lassi for delaying our order by 10 mins. So one star for that. And there ends any positive experience of mine. Easily among the worst food I've had. The pizza only had cheese and a few cubes of chicken. The meat had a really bad smell and the taste was worse. I ate 3 slices only thanks to my hunger. I try my best not to waste food in general but I was left with no choice but to trash the rest. The meat platter wasn't any better. It smelled and tasted as bad. Lamb pieces were dry and hard to bite. Only the color of tandoori chicken was good. Best among the lot was the sheesh kabob and even that was an utter disappointment. I had to have it with some chutney. The onions were extra sweet. I would highly recommend AVOIDING the place especially if you're really hungry.

Ahsan S.

Yelp
Finally, a good and authentic Pakistani restaurant! I ordered the Chicken Karahi and Biryani, both of which were delicious. The naan was also on point. The staff was also very friendly: the server chased me down on the street after I forgot my credit card! I'm not sure why the reviews are so mixed. I had 0 complaints and will definitely be going back!

Balbir S.

Yelp
Food was fresh, tasty, well cooked, well served. Overall good experience. We ordered veg and non veg meals. We went over the weekend and was able to find parking on the street (paid parking). Food was served pretty quickly but we were the only ones out at that time of the day.

Yelp
The lady in charge here was an absolute gem. She was so sweet and radiating with a pure kindness that you rarely find anymore. We walked in starving and unsure what we would find and I am so glad we did. We had the meat sampler, garlic naan, bhathura and chicken tikka masala-- everything was absolutely delicious. First time having Pakistani food and can't wait for my next visit!

Yelp
The worst Indian food I keep getting it out of desperation at 12am when nothing else is there. I keep hoping one day it will be better but nope.. it somehow ends up getting worse and worse. Lol. Please try a new recipe!! I beg of you. I want you to succeed but y'all really gotta do better, it's so bad.

Yelp
My go to place for Indian food. My favorites so far are chef special biryani, dal tadka and falooda. Spices are on point.
