"Located inside Shilling Canning Company in Yards Park, Ampersandwich serves up a limited menu of burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, and St. Louis-style ribs on  benne seed buns. For those craving a taste of New England, chef Reid Shiling showcases his own iteration of the lobster roll. Feel free to “amp it up” with a cookie, chip and drink combination for an extra fee. A concept created during the pandemic, I’m so glad it’s back inside Shilling Canning Company. Available inside and to go, there are six sandwiches on the menu and a weekend breakfast burrito. Every part of the sandwich is created in house except for raising the animals for the meat. Trying every sandwich at their launch party, every single one was delicious, especially with the housemade buns. However, my favorite was the “Chivito” with beef, ham, bacon, egg, and more. The “Ampburger” tastes like a gourmet Big Mac and it’s everything. Their wedge fries are crispy and nice. The homemade chocolate chip cookies are chocolate heavy and always warm. So good! They also sell Mexican Coca-Cola and Sprite in glass bottles. Service is always excellent and street or a paid parking lot are nearby.

Google
I ordered from AmperSandwich today for lunch. I'm always on the lookout for a new sandwich joint. Amper did fairly well overall and I ordered two different sandwiches and the fries as well. To start the fries label is misleading there are a potato wedge for sure, but they are an incredibly well done potato wedge. Next up I ordered the pit beef sandwich and the fried chicken sandwich. Both had good flavor to them and both were on house made buns which were also really well done. However the fried chicken came with a hot honey and it could have used more and as for the pit beef it also need more of the horseradish mayo and good amount of salt. I will be back to see if this was a one off.

The pit beef is my new favorite lunch go to, and you can get beers. Definitely becoming a regular

Had ampersandwich to go on Saturday. Ordered at the bar and waited. Husband was asked if he wanted water (presumably tap but who knows). Walked out with only a chivito in a bag (no napkins for a messy sandwich) plus the mandatory gratuity and it was $30. That’s insane for just a hamburger bun sized sandwich and nothing else. It was tasty but not that tasty.

Yelp
I honestly don't know how this place doesn't have a 5 rating. I took my Hubby here for his birthday. We did the Chef's Counter - Seven Course Tasting Menu. Everything was delicious. The service was top notch, the chefs were amazing and the ambiance was nice quaint and relaxing. Hubby said it was the best meal he has had in a very long time. We loved it so much we went back and had brunch for our wedding anniversary. The waiter suggested the fried chicken sandwich with fried egg and it was delish (see video). The staff is always so welcoming. Still our fave place to eat in DC!

Yelp
What keeps me coming back is simply the attentiveness and the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Be it with friends, on a date or solo which I've dined in all 3 scenarios here, I always depart satisfied. I enter and I'm immediately recognized. I often post up at the bar and service is no less than if I was table side. Everyone goes out of there way to ensure a great dining experience. I love that everyone knows the menu backwards and forwards. The cozy firepit and open kitchen only enhances the ambience. And the food never misses.

Esteban V.

Yelp
Popped in this place for brunch and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. I had the fried chicken that was exquisite and the hoe cake was one of the best I have had. The server was amazing and really sold the dishes. It was great that it was an open kitchen and the bar was nice. This is on my list of places to visit when I am in town.

Yelp
You will never find a chef that treats his ingredients with more respect than Reid Shilling. The 7 course tasting menu was just off the charts. Not to mention just so much food! Really loved the interaction with his staff, as they are insanely knowledgeable about everything Reid does. There is not a single negative thing I can say about this place, and this is after coming here several times. If you want something special, you found it here.

Yelp
We had an excellent dinner at the Shilling Canning Company. We walked in on a Thursday without a reservation for a party of 2. We were greeted and seated right away. The ambiance is classy and sophisticated. They have both bar and table seating. Our waiter was extraordinarily friendly and helpful! We gave us the run down on the drinks and menu and offered suggestions. We were very happy to have his input, and he did not lead us astray. The cocktails and mocktails were as delicious as they were beautiful. Of the food we tried, I think the deviled eggs were a highlight. I also loved the little country biscuits. The entrees were both stellar. We had the duck and the chicken ballotine. Everything was fresh and tasty. We were stuffed, so we didn't have room for dessert. But we eat ate a delicious tiny oatmeal cookie that was offered as a mini sweet treat. We are so glad we tried Shilling Canning Company. We will be back!

Yelp
The food is spectacular and the service is excellent. I would definitely come back and sit at the bar for happy hour and the rotating menu. Trick or Treat Dessert Cocktail: 10/10. You can get this only in October! The peanut butter foam is thick and unlike anything I've ever had before. It tasted like a chocolate peanut butter pie. Wagyu flat iron: 9/10. A little small but packed with flavor. I knocked off a point because the server didn't ask me how I wanted the steak cooked. Rockfish: 8/10. I enjoyed this dish but nothing stood out as I don't remember how it was in comparison to everything else. Thick cut fries: 10/10. This was basically 2 whole potatoes fried. The aoli it came with paired nicely. Shisito Peppers: 9/10. I loved the orange sauce that the peppers came with however, the peppers lacked spice. I wish they were a little spicy but they were still good.

Yelp
Fantastic restaurant for happy hour. The dinner menu looks amazing too, so I can't wait to get back to trip a few more dishes. Our party of two sat at the bar and ordered from the happy hour menu. We shared the pulled pork, potato wedges, and deviled eggs. It was just the perfect amount of food for two since we weren't super hungry. Serving sizes from the happy hour menu are decent too. What I really wanted to try was the Fried Chicken. The woman sitting next to me swore that it was some of the best fried chicken she has ever had and she's a chef! This means I need to get back here asap to try the fried chicken. Not the best parking in the area. Street parking is tough, and you have to pay for the lots in the area. I suggest all other methods besides driving if you can.

Yelp
This place has it all--delicious food, modern decor, and a great vibe with 90s rock playing in the background. We came for brunch, I ordered the homemade chicken sausage with grits & chicken jus, poached eggs, toast, and a side salad. The grits were hands down the best I've ever had, creamy and topped with a perfectly seasoned homemade sausage patty. The salad was light and refreshing, surprisingly delicious! On top of that, the service was fantastic. Our server was super personable and really helpful when it came to navigating the menu. Definitely a spot I'd recommend!

Yelp
Stopped in for an enjoyable happy hour with friends. We were able to grab a seat at the bar and the place had a wonderful vibe. Full disclosure - as fans of the Hulu show The Bear and two of us being Chicagoan's we wanted to try out the Italian beef. For cocktails my significant other and friends ordered the gambit, five sisters fizz and sunset Ricky. Everyone enjoyed their drinks. One thing I want to highlight as the non drinker in the group is the eye of the tiger, a mocktail. The drink was well balanced and not overly sweet which is a huge pet peeve of mine. I will say that I didn't love the price of a mocktail being more than $8 but I guess since it's are trendy now it... On to the food. We ordered deviled eggs, truffle fries and Italian beef. With the open kitchen concept you can see everything happening. My deviled eggs fell over 3 times on the plate and they re-plated it prior to serving which shows the attention to detail, but probably could have put a little filling on the plate under the egg to keep it steady. The thick cut truffle fries I would not order again. The Italian beef wasn't bad, but I wish it was dipped and had more flavor in the giardiniera or an option to have it hot. The roast beef was flavorful and well cooked. Overall service was great from the host to the bartender to the servers to the chef. We looked at the main menu and will definitely return for oysters, Amish chicken, and many other appealing options.

Yelp
I wandered in here after getting a facial at a nearby spa. My friend and I were looking for something quick and good... bc DC food often disappoints. When I saw that Yelp reviewers rated this place as a 4.5 star, trusting my fellow Yelpers, I jumped on it. I was initially so pleasantly surprised. I started with the deviled eggs (heavenly) and the truffle fries. Let's just say my taste buds were dancing! Trusting the incredibly robust flavors, I decided to take a chance and order the Chicken Ballottine. I was horribly disappointed... not bc it wasn't prepared well, but I hate Thanksgiving food, and it gave roasted turkey with stuffing. The texture of the puréed chicken in the center blew me. The management team was very accommodating. Brian took it off of my bill and immediately replaced it with the Amish chicken I selected. Unfortunately, the Amish chicken was burnt and the corn cake was burnt, too :( oh no!!! The service was really great and the appetizers were great. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with the entrees.

Nikki H.

Yelp
Our server made excellent recommendations. We had deviled eggs...delish...country ham biscuits for starters. Both good. I had the veg omlettomlette and hubs had the lamb. Both really good. We finished everything with the chocolate dessert. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
If you're looking for a fancy date night, this place is nice. There were really friendly servers. The open kitchen was cool to see. We tried their mocktail that was unexceptedly pleasant, there was a hint of pepper that I wouldn't have normally ordered. We participated in their restaurant week menu and it was pretty fun. The normal menu prices can run on a higher end. Enjoyed all the dishes, they had fresh and seasonal ingredients. Of all the items, I found the seared tuna as underwhelming. Dessert was delicious and not overtly sweet.

Dona P.

Yelp
Johnathan was a rockstar, I've never had my request for extra olives in my dirty martini being obliques with such generosity!!! He was so patient talking through what we could do df gf, and considering we came here the first week they opened and it continues to be excellent says a lot. These folks are making EVERYTHING FROM SCRATCH- it's actually overwhelming when it's explained. The best story- learning from our server when he went in early one day, the back fridge room was pitch dark with a black light and music blaring cause all the chefs WERE PICKING FRESH CRAB TO MAKE CRABCAKES AND THE LIGHT HELPS IDENTIFY THE SHELLS TO TAKE THEM ALL OUT. And pretty much no filler ! They were incredible! Just a special place that already has Michelin recognition and maybe a star in its future ?!?! Would be deserved !

Joe L.

Yelp
Service was fantastic. Impeccable service. Loved the feel from the staff who you can tell are passionate about their restaurant. Drinks from the bar were amazing. Deviled eggs and the crab cakes are out of this world and a must try. The Cole slaw is the best I've ever had, and the friend chicken with the Hoe cake was delicious. Really enjoyed the oysters and friend pickles. Tomahawk steak was good. For the price I feel like it should have matched how much we enjoyed all the other dishes, and it was good but not life changing. The potatoes dauphinoise, and the chimichurri it came with were outstanding. The Butterscotch pudding and apple cake dessert are a must try. Overall an absolutely wonderful experience at a great restaurant with an amazing staff. I would love to come back here and wish them many years of success.

Yelp
I absolutely loved this place! First of all, the restaurant is beautiful, modern with clean lines, rich blues, gold accents, and tons of natural light at brunch time. I'm not usually a sweets person but we got the pastry basket to share and every single one was delightful. I still think about those madeleines. Also, they can their own ingredients so the flavors are incredibly rich and clean! I had perhaps the best Bloody Mary ever. The server was attentive and shared fun facts, like the canning, and I overall loved the experience.

Yelp
Shilling Canning Company provides a wonderful dining experience where the service is excellent, the seating comfortable and the food reflects the chef's appreciation and caring for farmers and his own family's history with food.  The night we dined there, we started our meal with the delicious deviled eggs which lived up to their nickname of "creamy & dreamy."  This was followed by a spicy lamb sausage.  In this plate, the collard greens and the crispy fried shallots were the stars.   As  with our next plate, the wood fired tuna, the vegetables sang and the carrot consommé was so good, I requested a spoon to make sure I could enjoy it all.  The tuna was really nicely cooked - but - oooh - those carrots and carrot consommé - yum!  The admiration of the chicken ballotine, which was nice and crispy on the outside and very moist and tender on the inside, was further enhanced when you learn all the work that goes in to preparing it.  It is a long and careful process that results in a satisfying entrée.  I have never been onebto really like semifreddos but this meyer lemon and berry dessert changed my mind.  From the crunchy cookie bottom through the tart and tangy lemon cream to the little meringue log on top, it was yummy.  Then add those amazing fresh berries - super!  The only things that were disappointing were the strawberry high five drink which had little to no flavor (the non alcoholic eye of the tiger drink was much better) and the lamb sausage itself which was maybe a little dry. The menu apparently changes according to what is best at the market so we can look forward to a different but I'm sure, equally delicious meal the next time we dine.  Shilling Canning Company is located in the Navy Yard area which is a lot of fun to walk around and people watch in.  Parking is easy in a nearby lot.

Yelp
Wowowowow this place is a hidden gem. I came here on a Saturday night around 915 pm and it was pretty empty. The place is very cute; they have indoor and outdoor seating and a spacious bar area. We were sat quickly and the server came over promptly to take our order. For drinks, we ordered a glass of wine and a naked and famous. Both were good. For the food, I honestly was floored at how delicious everything tasted. All of their food is locally sourced from farms around the area and you can tell by how good the food is. We ordered deviled eggs, ham biscuits, Amish fried chicken, and the flat iron steak. The standouts for the entrees were the fresh vegetables (hen of the wood mushroom) in the steak and the peas with the hoe cake in the fried chicken. For dessert, we ordered the butterscotch pot and it was very good. Overall, I think this place is somewhere that will become part of my rotation and can't wait to try their 7 course tasting menu and more of their food.

Austin G.

Yelp
For elevated bar food, walk into Navy Yard's Shilling Canning Company and sit at the bar. There's an outdoor patio and a beautifully-decorated dining room, but the bar is what you want. Stopping in on a Wednesday evening at 8 p.m., my buddy and I found spots at the bar. The bartender immediately came over to walk us through the menu. A negroni for my friend and the La Princesa for me were refreshing. If you like more sweet drinks, order the La Princesa. For my second drink, I ordered a glass of their Sauvignon Blanc and it was refreshing! To eat, we split the country ham biscuits and pickle plate. The biscuits come in threes and are small but packed with flavor. For the mains, we split try fried chicken sandwich and waygu burger. Both come with house made chips with a delicious rub on it. Both sandwiches were good, but could have used a little more flavor. Still good, though! For dessert, we got the butterscotch pot de creme. It's rich, creamy, and perfect. Service was impeccable and the space is gorgeous. There's street parking or lot parking nearby. (Disclaimer: Our meal was comped.)

Sean W.

Yelp
Never been to the new Navy Yard area, glad we did. Very nice waterfront area with lots of restaurants and weekend live outdoor music. Wow, what an excellent meal with superb service! The oysters so fresh and huge! Deviled eggs were awesome, as was the fried green tomato BLT. Canning Co. makes all their own sauces and cans them, the canned bottles are featured around restaurant. Nice outdoor garden with herbs and tomato vine over pergola.

Stetson .T. P.

Yelp
Awesome experience as our group sat in celebration we were able to watch as the artist "chefs" create our meal using fresh ingredients right infront of you. It was amazing flavors mmmm' and ahhhh's going off. I love the way they balance dishes with savory n sweet. If you haven't you must try. Service was awesome. I know she was tired having to cater to our big group but did a good job

Eric D.

Yelp
This place was great we had such a fun time and the bartender was a riot. He talked with us the entire time and we really enjoyed the banter of the staff and bartender with one another and to customers. Food was excellent and the location is top notch. We really enjoyed the whole experience and the prices were actually quite good for the location! We'd definitely come back!

Wendy Eli R.

Yelp
I was disappointed with this restaurant. FOOD: We went during dinner and they still had the restaurant week menu (3 courses for $55), which is good. We primarily went in for oysters so we ordered a la carte. We ordered 3 dozen oysters, which were so fresh. They came with a nice vinaigrette. Would highly recommend. We also got the Vines and Nightstands, which was made from the restaurant's garden. It was fresh. I enjoyed it but my friends didn't. The country ham biscuits were ok -- a bit salty and the biscuit was hard. We got three drinks, the Gambit, Princessa, and Calypso. They were good. At the end, we received three small cookies which was nice. SERVICE: Our waiter was amazing. He gave us a full rundown of the menu and its inspiration. If I could give 5 stars just for him I would. When we entered, we were greeted by the host. We all got weird vibes from him. We were coming to this place after a baseball game and we felt as though he didn't appreciate the way we were dressed (casual with jerseys) and so he was judging us. If I could give 0 stars for him, I would. Probably the most absurd thing is that for 3 people we we're automatically charged 22% tip. I understand that when it's a big group but that would only be 20%. For them to automatically add 22% is outrageous. We would have happily given 20% but it's principle that the guests choose. VENUE: the venue is nice. It's about 15 mins from the Nats Stadium. It's large and well decorated. Overall I was underwhelmed by my experience here but keep in mind that my review is based on a limited selection of items. Perhaps if we had more of an appetite we would have sampled more and could have had a better experience.

Elena V.

Yelp
A gem of Navy Yard. From the moment you walk in, to the last bite AMAZING. Hibiscus Mint Mimosa is a must

Sherly H.

Yelp
I had a wonderful brunch experience here. The food was on the pricier side but 100% worth it. I highly recommend the deviled eggs and pastries! Our server was very kind and friendly. I'll definitely be back to try their other dishes.

Shenise F.

Yelp
Fancy Brunch at a Michelin starred restaurant, sign me up. The restaurant has a modern aesthetic that was pristine, yet inviting. I really appreciated how the staff was very knowledgeable about the menu and was able to guide me to a meal that I would be totally satisfying. I decided to go all out and I ordered the Regiis of Caviar which came with three small bites of caviar. Only draw back was, that I wished there was more to eat. To accompany the caviar, I also ordered the deviled eggs and the country ham biscuits which were also very good. Next time I visit it will be to check out their dinner menu.

Olu K.

Yelp
Update: I've been back many times since my first post. The food has been great every time. I'm glad I gave them a second chance because I would have missed out on delicious meals if i had. I came here with a group of friends and we had brunch. I ordered the lobster omelette and I don't know what they bought me but I know it wasn't real food. It looked and smelled like plastic and it tasted like throw up. They knew they were wrong for trying to pass that abomination off as food. I immediately returned that plate and asked them for the chicken and waffles instead, which was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. Gladly I didn't have to pour alcohol on my tongue after tasting whatever that first dish was. I'll go back and try them again however I'm saying clear from the lobster omelette!!!

Crystal D.

Yelp
The only thing Michelin star about this restaurant is the service. Our server (Nuri) was really nice and accommodating. Food was decent but portion sizes were lacking and options were limited. The deviled eggs were good but the portion was extremely small. The shrimp and grits were good as well, but only had 4 small shrimp in them. There were only 3 cocktails outside of a mimosa. Only juice options were orange and cranberry. Also, I was really excited to try the apple cider donut that is on their online menu, but it was not on the menu inside. Even with that, I would have been content, however, they need to figure out a way to accurately display their service charge. The bill said 22% but when calculated the service charge was actually a little over 24%. Our total bill was $83 -- our service charge was $20.09. Not a big deal, but it would be nice to know exactly what I am being charged. I asked to speak to the manager to explain the difference and the bartender came over and said she's the manager too. She said it's because of the liquor tax that is not shown on the bill. Shouldn't every charge be shown on a bill to the customer?! Overall, a very average experience while celebrating a birthday.

Richard L.

Yelp
Came here for Brunch on a Saturday and I will say first thing that stuck out was the price. Definitely a bit of a pricier place with the portion sizes served. That being said though the restaurant is very clean and the servers are extremely professional, always there to help. The assorted pastries were a good start and keeled us over as the fried chicken takes about 20-25 min to make. Flavor wise everything was pretty good and worth coming back again to check out. The cocktails were good as well. The lower rating primarily came from an incident we ran into while we were there. Unfortunately one member of our party ordered a fried chicken but was accidentally brought another entree. To the restaurants credit, they immediately remedied the situation and started on another fried chicken for her but it required ANOTHER 20 min or so before she got her entree. It was quite disappointing to see them bring out probably 6-8 other fried chicken entrees in that time to other tables. I understand they probably want to serve everyone at one table together, but was just weird to hear them say "they'll get another out asap" but skip over our table so many times to serve the chicken to others. They did bring out 1 complimentary pastry for her, but by then, the (albeit good) pastry was little solace, when we kept seeing chicken after chicken pass us by. Maybe will try again as the food was good, and might revise the review, but until then, that entire situation left a bit of a weird taste in our mouth.

Aimee G.

Yelp
Jonathan is the best server in town. Seriously. He was nominated for a Rammy. Their Fried chicken is what I come back for. It is served with a corn bread that is amazing!! Fries are also good. I've had a couple other items that have not topped this chicken but who needs anything else? French onion soup is not my favorite here, but again the fried chicken is where it's at.

Jamie I.

Yelp
Went here last night literally just before closing and was pleasantly surprised. I'm long winded so I'll keep it brief... It was 30 mins to closing so we sat at the bar and Lay was the bartender that night (she's gorgeous and hilarious btw). We ordered: deviled eggs, black truffled fries, Brussels sprouts, French onion soup, crab cakes, and peach margaritas. Best French Onion soup I've ever had (house made sourdough- need I say more?!) and I try it every place I've seen it offered, no lie! Brussels were cooked to perfection and I was pissed that I was running my mouth so much with Lay that my friend ate most of them. The fries were perfectly seasoned and crispy on the outside but soft inside and the crab cakes were also divine along with the. Little filler but I wish they were a bit thicker. The margaritas had just enough peach for the flavor but not to make it too sweet. I'll definitely be back because I want to try their brunch too. It really felt more like visiting family for dinner, I love this place and the people!

Erica T.

Yelp
Not sure what kind of Harry Potter culinary wizardry is responsible for their incredibly delicious food, but it makes my taste buds sing and my spirit happy. If you love fluffy pancakes and buttery cornbread you will love their signature hoe cakes, which is like a cross between the two, with a delicate crumb in a crispy crust. Other brunch menu favs: Amish cried chicken-yum; beer-battered fish sandwich-yum; and the assorted pastries-whew, chile! The staff is so friendly and welcoming that I ended up tipping way too much on a carry out order. Brian is hilarious. This casually sophisticated restaurant is a Navy Yard favorite. Usual patrons appear to be rather attractive (if I do say so myself) upper middle class people-most of whom are wearing jeans. Enjoy

Daniel C.

Yelp
Shilling Canning Company left a mixed impression. Our server was on point - knowledgeable and friendly, making us feel at ease from the start. The restaurant itself boasts an upscale, clean ambiance that sets the stage nicely. Now, let's get to the good stuff - those oysters were a delight. Fresh and bursting with flavor, they were a highlight of the meal. As for the ham and cheese biscuits, they were a tasty treat. Perfectly balanced with a crispy exterior and a soft, savory interior that hit the spot. However, when it came to the wood fire roasted veggies, the tomato flavor dominated a bit too much for my liking. It's a good dish, but it could use some tweaking. The drinks were where Shilling Canning Company really shines. I personally loved "The Gambit" - a blend of rye and mezcal that packed a punch. But here's the downside, they arrived late into the meal, which was a letdown. All in all, the food was good, but it didn't quite have that "wow" factor I was hoping for. It's definitely worth a visit, especially for the oysters and drinks, but there's room for improvement.

Brian B.

Yelp
The highlight of Shilling Canning is Conor the mixologist! She can make any and everything, and can educate you on the drinks. She is friendly, professional, and just has a genuinely good attitude. She makes you feel like you're a guest at her house. Okay now let me get away from the Conor show and talk about the restaurant... Service: Friendly and Professional Food: Good (I can only judge dessert) Ambiance: Very Nice Noise Level: Moderate Location: Great They have brunch, lunch and dinner.

Alison W.

Yelp
Awesome brunch spot! Ambience was incredible very light and airy. Great chill music. Best cornbread I've ever had in my life. The biscuits with ham and jam were so good we ordered a second. Cocktails were yummy. The only thing that was disappointing was the fried chicken. It was kind of plain and the meat itself was a small amount and chewy. The homemade sausage, however, was out of this world!

Helena O.

Yelp
Went for restaurant week and will definitely come again. A great and delicious seasonal menu, that was just enough food but not too much. Just right. Amazing service and ambiance. Our sever Jonathan was so hospitable and great with recommendations. Amazing service and food!

Anthony C.

Yelp
We came here after a game to get out of the heat and noticed that the restaurant closed in 15 min. We didn't want to be those people who came into a restaurant as they were closing, but as we started to walk away one of the chefs noticed us and told us that they were definitely still open and invited us in. From this exceptional example of customer service the night only got better. We only really came in for a few drinks, but after a passionate pitch of the food from our waiter Jonathan, we ordered a few starters (deviled eggs & squash blossoms) which were enjoyed thoroughly by the table. The drinks were very good and overall the experience was outstanding for a place that we just want to come in out of the heat for. Will definitely return for the food but more so the service.

D J.

Yelp
Appetizers and food was excellent. Silver dollar sized sliders came in servings of three as did the deviled eggs. One more of each would have been better. Xavier was available, but only one kind. A choice would have been better. Asking for three checks for the six of us seemed to out the waiter out. I mean, it wasn't four or five checks. We weren't a party of eight or ten. The waiter was a bit prickly anyway. And the automatic 22% tip on the after tax total put us over the top and we all decided we would not be back. As usual in the business, service can kill the deal.

Bryant G.

Yelp
Life is about experiences and this 7-course dining experience was unforgettable. Personalized treatment. Front-row view of dish delivery. Direct communication with the chef. Truly personalized service. Each dish came with a detailed description. Unique ingredient blends made each plate special. The whole experience will stick with us. Party of 4 seated near the prep area for an extra touch. Enhanced the experience for sure.

Yelp
I came to Shilling with a friend for brunch. The brunch deal of 3 courses for $35 is really a great deal, and it's nice that it is regularly available and not just a seasonal Restaurant Week sort of thing. (No shade to Restaurant Week...I live for that.) I started with the pain perdu, which is French for "lost bread" but also means "French toast sticks." They were good. They could have been a little crispier for my liking, but they were very fluffy on the inside--not like the raggedy toast sticks that are super hard. The buttermilk fried chicken was quite good, with a nice, crispy skin. The apple fritter donuts were mediocre for me...there wasn't very much apple flavor, and I didn't finish the last one. We had a very friendly and sociable server, and this made for a nice brunch on a gray day.

Yelp
Wow, what an experience! I tried the chefs counter and it is definitely an insane amount of food. When you are doing a chef tasting menu, you expect small plates, but I would say you get an entrée sized course for almost every single tasting menu item and you end up being stuffed by the third item because there are a couple of add-ons. I loved our Server and he was very informative. I liked being able to watch the kitchen staff cook, and some highlights from my tasting menu experience include: -amazing deviled eggs -sample of the hot honey and fried chicken -delicious and flaky cod! The desserts were also huge and great - a pumpkin crème brulee and a chocolate cake. I would be back!

Yelp
Came by with a group of 6 for brunch and was blown away by the service, food, and beverage quality. At first I was turned off by the fairly small menu, but every single thing I ate/tried was phenomenal. And 3 courses for $35 is a fantastic deal!! I tried the yogurt parfait (which was SO good, far better than anything I can whip up at home), the butternut squash tart, and cinnamon bun. It was so much food I wound up taking half of my entre home. I also had a mimosa and French 75, both great quality. This is hands down one of the best brunches I've had in Navy Yard and I plan on returning soon. Plus, they have a 4-6pm happy hour Wednesday - Friday (will definitely check that out soon). To top it all off, the decor is so cute and cozy! Don't sleep on this spot!!

Yelp
So my friends and I (table of 8) had dinner last night at the Shilling Canning Company at Navy Yard to celebrate a birthday. It wasn't my birthday, but it sure felt like it was by the way we were all treated by the staff. I loved the quaint and cozy atmosphere and the personal attention our table received from our waiter, Jonathan. He was very personable, warm and knowledgeable about the menu; and his recommendations were spot on! He took really good care of us the entire evening. And the food was absolutely amazing. We kinda shared our food family-style, so I had a chance to taste a little bit of everyone's plate. For appetizers, we started off with oysters, the country ham biscuits, the deviled eggs and caviar. Gotta say, the deviled eggs were out of this world! Some of the best I've ever had...especially when topped with a little caviar. And my one friend, who's typically hard to please, kept raving about the ham biscuits. I mean, they were that good! For the main course, I got a chance to try the Wagyu beef steak, the fried chicken, the chicken Ballantine the lamb blade and the grits! The steak was super tender. It had that most-coveted, tangy, dry-aged, full-beefy flavor! The lamb blade was cooked to perfection. If I close my eyes now. I can still almost recall that perfect blend of lamb gaminess coupled with the kiss of wood fire. Muah! Chef's kiss! You could tell the fried chicken was brined, because it was tender, juicy, moist and perfectly seasoned. In fact all of the food was perfectly seasoned. Never once did I reach for the table salt or pepper. Never needed to...which was rare for me. Another thing I did out of the ordinary, was to the eat dessert. But because the meal was so delicious, I went for it! Peach Galette! Flaky, buttery and decadent. I'm glad I opted in. Another wonderful thing that occurred, was one of the chefs came over to our table after dinner, to chit-chat with us for a minute. Made me feel super special! The serving portions were really generous, so I needed a doggie bag. Can't wait for leftover lunch! Y'all! You have to go to this place! I assure you, it will not disappoint. It was more than a meal, it was a true dining experience! One of my new favorite spots! I will surely go back!

Yelp
My experience at Shilling Canning Company is a perfect example of how service can really ruin a meal. I came with friends for brunch a while back. The food was fine. Nothing super special, but not bad. The ambiance is bright and airy and I liked that we were seated by a window and had a great view looking out. But now for the bad. The service. was. terrible. Our server was slow and inattentive and seemed put out every time we asked a question. Took forever to order drinks and it took forever for them to come. They were out of the beer my husband ordered so he came over to tell him and when my husband asked about other beers on tap, the server sighed loudly and walked back over to the bar to see what they had. He came back a few mins later to tell him the options. The server also delivered all of our drinks one by one over the span of about 5 minutes (there were 4 of us). We ordered an appetizer and our entrees at the same time, but were pretty clear that we wanted the apps first. Well, after half an hour we finally got food and it was our entrees. No app to be seen. We asked about it and he again seemed annoyed, but did eventually bring them out after we'd finished our entrees. It then took us forever get our check which includes an automatic 22% tip. All in all, I wouldn't be back.

Yelp
A phenomenal weeknight Restaurant Week experience at Shilling Canning Company. Service, food, and the overall experience last night easily has made this a restaurant that I'll recommend to friends and family. We arrived on a rainy Wednesday evening and were seated promptly. Our server was prompt in greeting us, and when I told him I enjoy spirit forward drinks, he recommended the Funny Business which was a delicious mezcal cocktail. My boyfriend and I ordered from the restaurant week menu. Unfortunately, they were out of the fluke (which I was really looking forward to) so For starters, we ordered Gazpacho and the Summer Squash and Corn Fritter with the Roasted Chicken as a main. My boyfriend loved that the Gazpacho wasn't freezing cold (a common problem we've come across) and was at a nicely chilled temperature. The corn fritter was good with nicely sized pieces of crab. The basil aioli was a nice touch. The Roasted Chicken was our favorite. Wow. Everything on the plate down to crispy potato was delicious and so rich in flavor. Would definitely recommend. For dessert, we ordered the Pot de Crème and Cheesecake. I thought I was stuffed but the Pot de Creme was so tasty and light that I finished it all. The staff was very friendly and attentive. They walked us through each dish, brought a fresh cocktail over as I finished my first, and convinced us to come back to try the brunch menu (didn't have to do much convincing lol) so we will be back this weekend to try the fried chicken!

Yelp
Got brunch here this morning and everything was lovely. They had fresh pastries, I got the blueberry cheese danish (amazing) and my boyfriend got the espresso cream puff (delicious). We shared some deviled eggs and they were excellent as well. Our meals was great but what really charmed me about this place was everyone who worked there. Our server Manny was really kind and attentive. Anyone we interacted with was really engaging and you can tell that they care about their work and their customers. Lovely place, we will definitely be back!

Yelp
Definitely one of my new favorite restaurants! I really enjoyed the 3 course pre-fixe + dozen oysters, funny business mezcal cocktail and my sauvignon blanc. The atmosphere is sophisticated and modern. Good amount of outdoor seating and attentive service. My cocktail was perfectly balanced and I loved the watermelon mignonette for the oysters. The terrine was light, flavorful, and just delicious- roe and asparagus lovers you will enjoy it. Roasted chicken was rustic and the fresh veggies were delightful. I loved the dessert! The butterscotch pot de creme and cookie was the perfect way to end my meal. I will be back for the 7 course chef's tasting!

Yelp
This is seasonal and local fare at its best. I have been wanting to try Shilling Canning Company for months and honestly, it exceeded my expectations! There was a $35 brunch prix fixe menu with a couple of options in each category (two choices for appetizer and dessert, three for entrees) that changed every few days. We both started with the deviled eggs (other option was a yogurt parfait) and ended with a peach scone (other option was strawberry bread pudding), and our entrees were fried chicken and an heirloom tomato tart. Honestly, the prix fixe was a complete bargain for the quality of food that we received. Each item absolutely shone. My favorite was the peach scone, which was described as a "shortbread" scone and was honestly one of the best scones I've ever had- not dry at all and came with the most delicious honey benne butter! I could have eaten five of these as a meal and been completely happy, but the heirloom tomato tart was exceptional as well. I also loved the few bites of fried chicken and honey hoe cake I was able to steal :) The preserved peach mimosas were the perfect thing to top off our meal and came in gorgeous coupe glasses. I can't wait to come back here and try a new menu- everything really blew me away, and it doesn't get much nicer than sitting out on their patio!

Yelp
Delicious! The squash blossom is new to the menu and an absolute must when eating here. The staff is knowledgable and attentive.
