Ok, ok, what is happening? Robots are literally at this gorgeous waterfront restaurant. Packed and busy, reserve a table. TAKE PICTURES! This very hard to find restaurant and in many ways, it is simply wonderful. However, I want to help set some expectations. I would have loved to have known what I was walking into. First it is very Asian, so the name, Anchovies and Salt made me think I was walking into a French or Italian seafood restaurant. That was surprising. Ok, I loved the view. OMG - Golden hour, sunset is breathtaking. Huge WOWWWW factor.
The food was hit and miss. The hot pot fish was so flavorful, light and melts in your mouth. This was by far the best thing on the menu. Don't hesitate, get it! The stir fried rice was surprising and delish. Broccoli was solid and good. I was just hoping it was organic and I am not positive it was. The crispy spring rolls did not win us over and I love them, so I was excited to try them. I think they could buy theirs at Trader Joe's and do better. These must be frozen from some store. They had no flavor at all. I recommend to the chef to really rework the recipe or buy them from a different place. I was shocked they were so bland. The beef pho was packed with flavor. The yummy mocktail with the sprinkles of gold was SOOOO yummy - I sucked it down in one sip. I was sad to see it go! Wanted another -- but didn't indulge.
This place is packed with high aesthetics and their designer deserves to be recognized. If there are awards for best aesthetics for restaurants this place should win the gold. It's one of the prettiest places in the PNW to eat at. Walk around and admire the art and design inside the restaurant. It's SO lovely. I would come back just for the ambiance.
OK..... back to these cute little roaming table Robots and the high techno service. This is a buzz kill for me personally. I really think they should rethink this concept. To be honest... I don't want to order my whole meal off an ipad. It took my group FOREVER to read and order and scroll -- and the descriptions are not explanatory. If they are going to do IPAD only ordering they need to hire a talented, professional, colorful copywriter that can really make the dish descriptions COME ALIVE! I like to ask questions, meet and talk with the waitstaff. I like interpersonal connection. I don't want to base my tip off of high techy service and robots. Robots bring the food out and the waitstaff puts it on your table. Do they really need waitstaff? Why not just send the robot to your table and you put it on your own table. By the time you order off the IPAD, have very little human contact, it is off putting and makes you want to just dismiss your server. It's like, "if I am not worth really interacting with, why do I want to interact with you?" Soooo this concept inadvertently creates a detached robotic interaction with the restaurant and you don't feel the "LOVE". For example, have you ever been to El Gaucho in Seattle or Bellevue. They greet you by name; the MANAGER (not waitress) makes the rounds, comes to your table and asks how your party is; asks if you are celebrating something; asks how your meal is; asks if you want to try the special drink they have; and by the time you leave you are saying to yourself, "WOW, they care about me! I LOVE THIS PLACE!" I think we need more personal attention and love in the world, and so this robot thing really lacks that special touch. Yes, yes the staff was there if we needed anything, and is not completely inattentive or hands off, but I am wondering how soon until this place just serves people with only robots? It's exactly like the self check out line at the grocery store. Someone is there if you raise your hand and need something. Do I want to pay $200 dollars for that? No. However the view and the ambiance was great. I will say, the wait staff let us sit there for hours, unbothered, deep in conversation -- so on the other hand, if you want very little personal interaction, don't need much personal care or attention, like a silent waitstaff, then this is perfect for you. It would be great for a business meeting where you don't care for an attentive or overly enthusiastic waitstaff. Also, it is high on Asian culture and it has a VERY Asian approach to service -- non intrusive, nice but not warm. You will not be 100% positive they are going to accommodate your special requests, but they act as if they do get it. So cross your fingers and hope they do! In our case they did deliver our special requests. Would I go back again, YES! Absolutely, however, I have now adjusted my expectations -- and won't be as shocked. I would not pick this place for certain occasions. It's worth the experience. Of course it is unique, progressive and while the decor honors the past in some ways, the approach is clearly something from the future. It's packed and I can see that people seem to really love this place. I am glad I went.
